The Great War, old sport! I accepted a commission as a first lieutenant in 1917. I commanded the machine gun regiment at Argonne, and we moved half a mile further than the infantry could. We stayed there two nights, a hundred and thirty men with only sixteen guns, but when they caught up with us there were three German divisions among the dead. I was promoted to major, and every Allied government gave me a decoration.
