If anything did inspire this, it was the poem primarily cited, "Success Is Counted Sweetest", along with the movie Jacob's Ladder, and these together provided the title. This fic is also written in first person present tense, a format I normally despise, but this fic could not be written in any other way. I don't feel this is among my best, but I'm just happy to have been able to write and finish something, after a sickeningly long dry creative spell.

Notes: So I'm a Dynast/Dolphin 'shipper. I don't know why, but I just like this pairing. But remember, these are still Mazoku, don't go in here expecting fluff. Life can be and generally is chaotic, and Dolphin's domain is one full of life. That, coupled with the fanon idea of her insanity (which I'm quite fond of actually), has her more capable of feeling a broader range of emotion than the standard Mazoku. I originally planned to make this into a lemon, but when I actually set about writing it, it wouldn't happen. Part of it is, I started wondering how it might happen between two Mazoku Lords, and couldn't get the notion of Q sex out of my head, which is rather boring, all things considered (Trekkie fans might know what I'm talking about).
Summary: He wondered then if perhaps her insanity was a hell of her own making, her own downfall for emotion. She was a Charybdis, drawing him down into a powerful maelstrom, corrupting him.

After a little more work, I could see they didn't fit together inside the same 'fic anymore, so... two for the price of one!
Summary: She saw him before he knew she existed. Her first thought was that he was handsome, but far too much so for it to have any effect on her. He had looked like someone who had stepped out from between the pages of a book, the perfection of imagination manifest. Then a maddening, arrogant smirk crossed his features while conversing with someone else as they left the station for the general's office.
