Notes: End of series spoilers, slightly AU. Done as an accompanying piece to emilie_burns's Full Circle. I'd take blame for this hurty little 'verse, but I tried to make this Envy go away, so I can't be blamed for it anymore.

Faith
There was something bitterly ironic about it all, Envy could very dimly realize, in amongst everything. And it wasn't fair. Lust and Sloth were dead, same with Pride. Greed had been killed awhile ago, and Gluttony and Wrath were nowhere to be found, so he could only assume they were dead too.
Even Dante was dead, as hard as that was to wrap his head around.
So he'd actually outlived them all. Just like he'd planned on, like he'd hoped and figured he would.
Yes, there was very bitter irony there.
It'd been the brat's fault, that Dante had died. He'd killed her when she activated the Stone and his precious little brother disappeared. Gluttony and Wrath disappeared, caught up in the reaction.
It wasn't fair though. Edward had died too easily, too quickly. All those years Envy had lived, trapped between his humanity and his death with a festering, infected wound that reopened and bled and scarred and never went away, its pain sharp and burning all those centuries, and then along came the little golden Christ child and so easily took everything he'd wanted, needed, hated and he died that easily?!
It wasn't fair. He wasn't supposed to be dead, too. He wasn't supposed to leave him too.
As more bitter irony would have it, the catacombs that were entryway for the city he'd known as 'home' centuries ago were graves as well, tombs for the saints of the old Christian religion, who'd buried their dead under their place of worship, on hallowed ground.
Their god had risen from his tomb after three days.
So Envy had taken Edward's body, battered and torn, and hid it in one of the empty tombs, built but never used before their religion fell in the face of alchemy and science and reason.
He went to the tomb every day, staying the rest of the time in the room that had been his. He went every day, watching as Edward's body gradually decayed. His sanity was deteriorating with the body, as more and more he expected Edward to greet him one day, convinced that those gold eyes would light up with life again and look at him, hatred and anger burning in them like the sun.
He hadn't seen the sun since then either. He'd trapped himself underground there, and he hadn't left since.
Somewhere distantly, in the back of his mind, he was aware that he was going crazy, slowly losing his grip on reality. And somewhere, in that same part of his mind, he found it truly ironic that the last thing the sin had left was his faith.
