Entry tags:big bad wolf, willful child

Who: Shane, Shiloh and Aaron
What: Shane has a delightful hole in his stomach in need of stitching.
Where: 104
When: Immediately following this.
Warnings: Gore, mentions of wound stitching, and swearing likely.

All Shane wanted just now was to go to sleep. His vision was black around the edges and his head was light. It would be very easy just to lay back on the bed and pass out. Hell, it would be easy to pass out right now, and just let his body fall where it liked.

He focused on the pain throbbing in his side to keep himself awake and alert. Even exhausted as he was, he knew he couldn't afford to fall asleep, not when there was enough blood on his shirt to make not waking up a distinct possibility.

He kept one hand, still tipped with claws, wrapped around his stomach, covering the wound as he dully watched Shiloh fetch supplies to stitch him up with. God, he'd been stupid. This was it, for a while. He couldn't be hunting anyone down if it was going to endanger other people and nearly get him killed. This couldn't happen again, wouldn't happen again, and he wasn't going to continue his work until he was sure it wouldn't.

Shiloh was moving calmly around the empty space that was the bedroom. He kept glancing up at the ceiling, mentally trying to decide how long to give Aaron before he panicked.

When he'd chosen to move his brother here, this was not what he had in mind. He hadn't stopped to look a gift horse in the mouth, but he was wondering if that was going to end up being a catastrophic oversight.

He pulled his turtleneck off, and the long sleeved shirt beneath it, leaving his chest bare; there was no point in ruining the few items of clothing he had with blood. His chest, back and arms were a menagerie of stitched up, angry lines scarred over.

He fished a paper bag from his dresser, and he dumped it beside Shane on the bed. All the ingredients of a homemade first aid kit spilled out on the mattress. None of the items seemed particularly new. He pushed needle and thread and gauze aside, and he picked up a pill bottle with a foreign name out of the pile, taking two pills and holding them to Shane. "For infection."

Shane looked from the pills to Shiloh and turned his head away. "No," he said. He had no idea what those pills were. They could be anything. He'd just met Shiloh ten minutes ago, and the fact that he'd insisted on helping him this far made him suspicious by default. "Why are you doing this?" He took in the crisscross of lines on Shiloh's chest and felt something akin to curiosity despite the gravity of the situation.

Shiloh didn't get upset or argue when Shane turned down the pills. "Infection isn't pleasant," he said simply, putting the pills back in their bottle and leaving them where Shane could reach, should he change his mind.

He found a pair of small scissors in the pile of items, and he started cutting away the shirt Shane was wearing, carefully, at the hem. "Because Aaron wouldn't leave you," he said plainly, looking at Shane's face. He wasn't planning on asking any questions, not unless Shane offered something first. Shiloh knew when to stay quiet.

Shane ignored the comment about infection, trying not to think about it. He held as still as possible, trying to focus on talking. If nothing else, it would help him stay awake. "Your brother?" he asked. Shiloh seemed incredibly protective of him, so he had to assume a family tie of some kind.

He thought back to Aaron's face when Shiloh had asked for his opinion on him. He shuddered, in too much pain to keep his reactions under the surface. How had he known that? Had he guessed? He didn't like that, didn't like the idea of anyone knowing what was going on in his head, especially not now when every move sent a ripple of pain through him, making him exposed, snappish, vulnerable. He hoped the kid stayed away and didn't come back.

Shiloh pushed Shane's shirt open, once it was cut to the neck, and he stood wordlessly and walked to the bathroom. He came back with a damp washcloth in his hand, and he pressed it to the wound on Shane's abdomen as he sat down again. He needed to see how much of what was happening here was blood and how much was injury.

The blood flowed freely when he pressed, and he glanced up at Shane's face to gauge the pain there. "It's deep, but it won't kill you," he finally decided, after looking down for a few more moments. "My ward."

He flinched when Shiloh pressed the cloth against the wound, his pupils wide and dark. He bared his teeth without thinking, and closed his lips as soon as he realized he was doing it. Christ, he had to get a handle on himself. "Good," he said, although it was hard to tell how much he meant it.

"Why do you have him?" he asked, looking over at him, eyes still a little unfocused but that unshielded stare bright, fierce and hard.

Shiloh's eyes went to Shane's clawed fingers when he heard the hiss, thinking them the most immediate concern. For Shiloh, claws on hands were like snakes that talked in Eden and creatures from the Apocalypse - not an everyday occurrence, but not something to be very shocked over. He did, however, know that they were sharp and could cause pain.

He pressed against the wound until the blood slowed, despite Shane's reaction, and then he picked up the small bottle of peroxide from the pile of items. A quick splash. "Man died," he said, again, plainly, as he looked at Shane's face. "This building, is it always like this?" A question for a question.

Shane gritted his teeth against the sting of the peroxide and kept from making any kind of noise. He'd been injured before, shot and stabbed both, but mostly grazing wounds. Never had he been hurt this deeply or this seriously. "Yes," he said, though he didn't really know what 'this' meant--the situation at present, or the trouble caused in it in general. "It's not a normal place."

Shiloh didn't like the sound of that, and he wondered about the man who gave him the key to this place. He didn't have a name, couldn't track him down if he wanted to, and it made him uneasy.

He watched Shane's face, took in how he dealt with the pain. He was tough, this man, and it showed in more than the marks on his torso. He laid a soothing hand on his wrist, but he didn't offer any words of comfort, just a touch as the peroxide did its work.

Aaron materialized in the doorway. He only had one shoe on and his expression was set so hard that he had clearly chosen to put it that way for as long as it would take to get through this and find somewhere safe to fall apart. "Shiloh," he said urgently, glancing over at the man on the bed and then lowering his voice to a soft, slightly panicked hiss. "The other one didn't go to 201."

Shiloh turned and looked at Aaron. He took in the missing shoe and the younger man's expression, and he was on his feet instantly.

He knew better than to hug Aaron like this, all skin and no barriers, so he slipped the sweater back on before he tugged Aaron to him. He was careful to touch fabric, not skin as he tugged. "Are you okay?" Because that was his concern, not either of these other men.

The shoe was in the hallway behind him, and the slightest rust stain was smeared over the toe, visible in the hard bare hallway light. Shiloh's concern and sympathy sank through the acidic remnants of the rooftop resident, and Aaron started to shake. "He went to the roof, the apartment on the roof," he started, desperate to get it out before he really started to lose it. "He was sure there was someone safe there, but I don't know, whoever is up there is really messed up, but he was sure and he was all numb and panic so I let him go. Should I have let him go?"

Shiloh, whose concern was his little brother, and not some nameless man on the roof, nodded. His hold on Aaron was light, but strong, something safe and solid. "He went where he thought he was safe, Aaron. You did the right thing."

He was starting to cry, which was so stupid, because he'd cried twice in one day, where he hadn't even cried at dad's funeral, but he couldn't seem to help it. The shaking got worse, hard wracking shudders, as if by pure harsh movement Aaron could shake off everything he'd felt in the last hour. "He's so lost and angry--" there was no telling who he was referring to by now, since the rest of it was lost in coughing mutters as Aaron tried unsuccessfully to stop bawling like a little kid. "Hurt," got through at one point, and "kill" and "afraid."

Shiloh made soft, comforting sound, and he pulled Aaron further away from the room, away from Shane, as far away as he could get him, while still remaining in the apartment. "Listen," he said loudly enough to be heard over the crying, "I'll make sure they're okay. It'll be fine." He tipped Aaron's chin up, careful to cover his hand with the sleeve of his sweater before he touched. "I promise you that I'll make it okay." He meant it with every fiber of his being. If it was important to Aaron, he'd make sure it happened. "How do we get you to focus back on yourself after something like this?" he asked. It was something he needed to learn, he realized, something important, something he had no idea about whatsoever.

Aaron believed Shiloh's assurances. He believed them because Shiloh believed them, and he was too close to him not to feel that belief. Aaron pulled back and started scrubbing at his face with his coat sleeve again, as if he could just erase the damage as easily. "Just need some time by m'self," he mumbled, looking away and awkwardly pulling free from the hug. "Can you, like, just keep him away... just out of my room, okay?" Red-rimmed eyes looked past Shiloh into the room beyond, where, thank God, Shane had receded past the point that Aaron could sense anything more than sleeping exhaustion. "I need a few hours," he hiccuped, "the inside of my head hurts."

Shiloh let Aaron slip out of the hug without any resistance, and he listened and he nodded. "He isn't going to wake up any time soon, Aaron," he assured, wanting to just take Aaron away and protect him from all of this. He decided, right there, to see if he could find someone who could help Aaron control this. "And don't worry about school. Go on in, and sleep, and we'll work everything out in the morning. Do you trust me?"

It was almost eleven in the morning by the time Shane woke up. He'd slept almost straight through, waking only once to down two of the pills Shiloh had offered him dry and pull the blanket tighter around himself.

He was greeted by light outside and throbbing pain around the stitched wound. His head felt like it had been weighted to the pillow, his mouth bone dry. Water. That was what he needed. His thirst won out over how much he knew it was going to hurt to quench it, and he sat up in the bed, biting the inside of his mouth when the pain skyrocketed.

He leaned on his hands, staring blankly at the floor. Sitting up was hard enough. Standing and walking somewhere to find water was going to be ten times that.

Aaron had fallen asleep with his headphones still lodged on his head and some seriously pissed off rock singer screaming at him, which had to be the best lullaby ever. With several hours of only his own company, he was feeling something like sane, and even (he was pleased to realize) rested. He padded sleepily out of the bathroom at the end of the hall into the kitchen, thin chest bare, hair smooshed to one side, and looking entirely harmless in bear print pajamas.

When he sensed--then saw--Shane in the center of the kitchen, he stopped dead in the frame of the hallway, and immediately turned around and ran back into his room. Two minutes later he was back, wearing a MSU sweatshirt three sizes two big over the pajamas and thick wool socks. Shane got a sullen look that all teenagers everywhere have trademarked for their exclusive use.

The journey to the kitchen hadn't been an easy one. He was stiff all over, and had been forced to use the wall as support. How pathetic that just making it to the sink made him feel like he'd conquered some incredibly difficult task.

It had taken a little searching to find a glass, and then very careful pulling to get it down without stretching too far. It was still uncomfortable, still pulled on his stitches, but he managed it. When Aaron walked in he was filling the glass from the tap.

He noticed him out of the corner of his eye, but didn't turn to look at him until he'd downed the glass of water, not stopping to breathe from start to finish. When he turned to him, Aaron was giving him a dark look. "What?" he asked. It wasn't as if he had done anything. Aaron was the one who had gotten himself involved in the situation and then refused to remove himself from it. That, at least, Shane wasn't willing to take the blame for.

"Are you still here?" It was exactly the kind of question typical of Aaron, who already knew the answer. Then he said, "I'm waiting for you to get out of the way so I can get some cereal. Do you have a problem with that?" Aaron's eyes flicked downward and he couldn't seem to keep from staring at the sewed up wound with a disgusted fascination. He hadn't ever seen anybody cut up that bad before, and it was sort of surreal. Crazy. Aaron was getting vague overtones of Shane's discomfort and irritation, but it was relatively minor and didn't bother him.

He rolled his eyes minutely but moved out of the way, clearing a path for Aaron. When he was able to get to the sink, he filled the glass again, drinking almost all of it at once again. He leaned back against the counter, resting a moment. "Shi said that you're his ward," he said, unknowingly familiar since Shiloh hadn't given him his full name. He assessed Aaron. Not as young as he'd thought when he saw him last night, it seemed, but still very much a teenager.

Aaron dug through the cupboards--which were relatively bare, despite the fact that Shiloh had just gone shopping, since it was obvious they hadn't been in the apartment long--and pulled out a box decorated with a beaming leprechaun. He didn't like Shane calling Shiloh "Shi," not knowing that was the name he gave, and he decided to hold it against him. "I'm eighteen," he said, stiffly. "I'm just staying here for a little while, that's all." He shrugged a little into the sweatshirt. Totally independent, see. Self-sufficient. Yeah. "Why," he said, challengingly. "Are you moving in?"

"No," he said flatly, finishing off the glass of water and turning with a slow care born of pain. "I'll be gone as soon as I can make it up the stairs." He put the glass in the sink, and cast a glance toward the box he was holding. "So I won't keep you from your Lucky Charms for long."

Aaron ate a handful of the cereal dry, chewing slowly and looking at him. "Then you're gonna be here a while longer, aren't ya?" He didn't sound... sympathetic, exactly. But nor did he hang onto that resentment he'd had earlier. He sounded... uncertain. Not sure quite how to deal with it. "You're just hot to get out of here because you don't like being helpless."
