Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Everyone
What: The Final, The Last, The End
Where: Outside Bellum Letale
When: The morning after the masquerade.
Warnings: This is a party post.
Notes: I will not cry I will not cry I will not cry.

The limos pull along the quiet avenue leading to Bellum Letale, and the coming dawn is entirely obscured by midnight's black still. The entourage strongly resembles a funeral, but despite how hard they may look, if the hearse is ahead, the twists and turns of the looming buildings obscure death's coach.

Suddenly, light: but it is not the dawn. It's orange and yellow, a flickering, dangerous light, a candle flame with aspirations to the heavens. It's Bellum Letale. The roof is already consumed, licking heat kindling in the windows of the highest floors and spitting hungry tongues of fire out of the lower exits. The vehicles bearing every resident continue without pause, drawing all nearer, an oil slick puddling at the base of the burning building. The area is still vacant, and a harsh reminder of how the building itself drives off those who take no part in life within its walls.

Before the limousines allow their passengers to alight, there is a massive crash, and the balconies crunch inward within the building's skeleton. More collapsing supports throughout, as levels and walls give way to the heat, and the building goes lame a floor at a time. The locks click, and the doors open, allowing all passengers the freedom of the heat-choked air. Minutes pass as the flames grow more wild and the smoke thickens, until the sound of cracking timber is interrupted by a roar that makes the surviving trees sway and jolts the sewer covers from their beds.

Something pushes through the third floor windows, a limb the size of a redwood that glints of skin or scales. It rakes out, reaching beyond the boundaries of the building into the air--and finding nothing, curls back inward, drawing with it red hot steel beams and raining molten glass and burning splinters down among onlookers. Another earth-shattering below as the creature claws at the night air from successive floors, taking the building down chunk by flaming chunk, until the ruin sinks down into the basement in clouds of debris and choking smoke.

As dawn breaks in spectacular pink and orange rays, the fire is subdued by late-arriving servicemen, and the smell of doused charcoal overtakes all. There is no sign of whatever was within the building as it collapsed, and no witnesses except for those men and women so unfortunate as to be able to hear its death throes--these now homeless residents of Bellum Letale.

The new day breaks, and the smoldering ruins are all that remains. Heaps of brick, fluttering shrouds of burnt material, crushed furniture--and the sturdy stone outline of a stone wishing well, still untouched, buried in the crater of the cataclysm.

While he waited for Helena, Vlad made his way among the crowd with Cain and Abel at his heels. Some faces were vaguely familiar, and others he didn't recognize at all; but he couldn't seem to find the people he was actually looking for. He wasn't particularly desperate, since he knew there were still ways to contact people even after he'd left, but even though he'd never been the sentimental type a goodbye in-person was something he wouldn't have minded.

Eventually he stopped near the edge of the sidewalk, deciding that if he couldn't find anyone he recognized before Helena returned, he'd simply leave with her and try to contact Daniel later.

After she left Samuel, Helena kept her eyes peeled for one last man in the crowd. She had wondered where Edward was, although she was a bit shaky on what he actually looked like. She remembered him from her dream but even there he kept shifting faces. She looked around for some sign of him but still she came up with nothing. She hoped he was okay, safe and sound, and she had nothing but worry on her mind as moved through the crowd of people. When she finally found Vlad again, her make up was a tad more smudged at the corners of her eyes. It seemed the gravity of the situation, of the end of it all, finally had settled upon her and she was in much sadder spirits than when she left him.

The dogs heard her approach and trotted up to her, following until she finally stood beside Vlad. Even though they were outside, they were alone now, and she slipped her arms around him without hesitation. After all these farewells, she wanted to hold the one person who wasn’t going away. Her head came to rest on his shoulder but her eyes still took in the wreckage that was once their home. She was silent, simply taking comfort in his presence and it was several long minutes before she finally spoke. “What shall we do now?”

As he watched the crowd begin to thin, people heading off in different directions either alone or with others, Vlad realized just how few goodbyes he actually had left to say. Aside from Daniel and Rosalie, there really hadn't been anyone else he was particularly close to - Boyd was already gone, while finding Max in the crowd wasn't likely as Brian would be the one in control now. It didn't make him feel particularly sad, but a strange feeling of nostalgia mingled loneliness settled over him as he thought about everything that had happened in Bellum from the time he'd moved in until now. Things had changed, he had changed... and now it was over. Gone, in a blaze of fire and a roar of destruction.

He glanced up when he felt Cain and Abel brush past him, his expression relaxing slightly when he saw Helena. He offered a small smile, wrapping his arms around her waist in response to her embrace in an effort to provide some kind of silent comfort. Everything was different now, but he still had her and that was all he really cared about. "Anything," he said in response, tilting his head down to look at her. "We can travel for a while and see the world before settling down somewhere a little more permanent."

"Anything," she repeated softly to herself. Her embrace tightened for a moment, his presence and reassurances doing much to lift her mood and she inhaled deeply as reveled in all the possibilities that lay ahead of them. When he looked down at her she met his gaze, a small smile gracing her lips to reassure him in turn. Traveling and then settling down still sounded as wonderful now as it did a few weeks ago.

She nodded and although she didn't pull away from him, she shifted in his embrace, her hug gentler, and less of a death grip. "Should we call a cab?" She wasn't sure if she would trust the limos again. Then again, she wasn't even sure if they would still be waiting for them. They served their purpose in bringing them here. Surely they were done now. "We should rest up somewhere. We've had a long evening." She wasn't sure she would be able to sleep but getting off the sidewalk seemed like the best course of action. She thought of the family she had in the city and as much as she wanted Vlad to meet them, today was not the day.

Perhaps a small part of him might have been apprehensive about what she wanted to do next, whether she'd want to stay in the area a little longer or stay with family instead; but her smile did wonders to quell any worries about their future. There were so many places he wanted to show her, and even some he'd never seen himself and wanted to experience with her. Eventually they could find another place to stay, but even then their options were endless. They could live anywhere they liked - it was a freedom he knew many didn't have, but he was going to relish it regardless.

Vlad cast another glance around before nodding. There was really no reason to linger, not anymore. "I can call a cab and easily find us a hotel to stay in for now." He only paused for a moment before leaning down to give her a quick kiss. "Then we can decide where to go next." Glancing down at the dogs, he couldn't help but smirk. "And what to do with these two."

She gave him a grateful smile as he reassured her what their next course of action would be, giving him another quick kiss in return for his. There was a soft laugh as she looked down at the dogs in question, both now gazing up at them and wagging their tails, as if sensing that their mood was lightening. "Surely you're not thinking of going anywhere without our boys?" she teased him gently. Traveling with pets, especially ones as big as Cain and Abel, wouldn't be terribly easy, but she couldn't imagine leaving them anywhere for so long. Although this was partially due to the fact they hadn't yet decided on where to go.

First things first, though. "Let's go to a hotel then. I'm not particular as to where. Just somewhere with a nice comfortable bed for two." As if on cue, she felt a cold nose nudge her hand and she sighed dramatically, but her smile remained in place. "Oh, fine, I suppose for four."

Vlad had never actually traveled with anyone of the non-human variety, but even so he knew that it wouldn't be easy to bring two rather large dogs with them wherever they went. Still, he'd grown rather fond of his pets, and the way Helena called them our boys made him realize there was no way he couldn't bring them along. "Of course not. How could I ever leave them behind?" He scratched behind their ears affectionately, laughing when their tails wagged even harder. It would be difficult, yes, but that had never stopped him before. "You know how persuasive I can be. Wherever we go, they go."

He kept an arm around her waist as they turned away from the building and began to walk, Cain and Abel staying close to their side. "Perhaps we should get them their own bed," he teased, pulling out his cell and noting with satisfaction that it was working again. "I'm not too thrilled about the possibility of having to share you."

“Oh, I know,” she laughed. She was starting to doubt there was anyone on this earth more persuasive than Vlad. Her arms laced around his middle as she kept her face buried in his neck, only tilting her head up to see him pull out his cell phone or to glance down at the dogs walking beside them. “Oh alright. Since you insist. Our bed will remain decidedly humans only.” She laughed softly once more and pressed a kiss to the underside of his chin. “I missed sharing. At least with you. I’m decidedly over sleeping by myself.” It didn’t necessarily need to be said, especially since their apartment building was reduced to ash behind them. But she thought she’d admit that she was done living on her own. From here on out, she wasn’t going anywhere.

The grin he gave her was entirely teasing, mainly because she knew firsthand just how convincing he could be. "You probably know better than anyone," he agreed, waiting until they'd gotten a fair distance away from the limos and building rubble before dialing a cab and giving their location. It didn't take long at all, and he slid his phone back in his pocket to return his attention back to Helena. He let out a contented hum at the feel of her lips against his chin, pulling her a little closer as they waited for the taxi.

"Are you?" Vlad hadn't remembered to ask how living on her own was going, at least not since before the masquerade, and he'd almost forgotten that fact considering the building was now gone. "I'm glad to hear that, because I missed sharing with you too. In fact, I missed everything about you. Even with the dogs, it was just too lonely." He'd never thought that he would actually feel that way about anyone, but ever since he'd met Helena, his view on a lot of things had changed drastically.
