Sadie still wasn't sure if she should be doing this, but it was too late to back down now. She was already at Gabe's door and she had already knocked on it. If she left now, he'd see her going down the stairs and walking across the farm, so she was stuck.

Gabe had been working in the wheat field when he'd heard some of the other workers nearby talking. Normally, Gabe just zoned out and ignored them. He never tried to talk to anyone. He kept to himself to avoid confrontation. It was the subject of their conversation that set him off. They were talking about a new report about water contamination in Madison. He knew specific code words in their conversation and his eyes widened.

Earlier in the evening Midian had dropped off a box. It was from Sadie and contained various things Gabriel had left behind in her apartment. Sadie wanted to give them back, understandably did not want to bring the box by herself. Madge thanked Midian and assured him the box would get to him right away.
She waited until after sundown though, so she would be sure Gabriel was back in his apartment. She carried it over to the tractor garage, looking at the few items at the top, some clothes and a picture in a frame. She didn't look through any of the other items, not wanting to invade Sadie's privacy. She doubted Sadie would have included anything that could be potentially dangerous. Gideon would likely disapprove of Madge's trust, but he wasn't in charge on the farm, so that wasn't important.
Once she reached the top of the stairs outside the apartment, she readjusted her grip on the box to hold it against her side and knocked on the door.

Gabe definitely saw the amazingly traumatizing dynamic of having betrayed an entire town, failed to redeem himself adequately and then be forced to live in said town. He was surprised anyone at all had been willing to give him a job, let alone provide a place for him to live that wasn't in the middle of town. He was grateful for it, and he pretty much did nothing but work his days away anyhow. Every now and then he was sent into town to make a delivery, which usually meant he returned with a new bruise and or wound. He couldn't blame anyone, really.

The soldiers trailing Gabriel Roberts' every move were a pain in the ass. Madge couldn't get too upset, they were trying to protect her, after all, but she didn't think she had anything to be protected from. Gabriel was extremely docile, and Madge was sure it wasn't an act. She'd gotten that impression when she spoke to him on the base and she still had it now that he was released and about to live on her farm.
Once General Grant decided to let Gabriel go within the city walls, Madge was the only one to offer to put him up. It wasn't a huge shock to anyone involved. Madge was just that kind of person. She thought working on a farm was much better for a wayward soul than wasting away in a jail cell. Or trying to scrape a living doing odd jobs in a town full of people who hated your guts. So she offered Gabriel a place to live and a job, and he'd accepted.
He'd arrived on the farm Wednesday with a military escort, and after showing Gabriel around the main farm house, she brought him out to the tractor garage. There was a shabby little one-bedroom apartment up there, all ready for a new tenant. She convinced the soldiers to stay outside and then brought Gabriel up.
"So, this is your place," Madge said with a smile, spinning around slowly in the apartment as she looked around. "Bathroom's in there," she pointed, "and right there is a closet to put your things."

On day three of the interrogation, Ketty was back to do the questioning. She looked exactly the same as she had the first day she came in, except maybe for a little more tiredness around the eyes. Of course, she didn't look anywhere near as bad as their prisoner, who hadn't had the luxury of a chair or a table the night before.
Ketty stepped into the room with a big smile. "Good morning," she said in a pleasant tone.

They never had taken Gabe out of the chair in the interrogation room. He'd gotten one glass of water, and then had eventually given in and used the cup as his toilet. It was either that or piss himself and really, he already smelled pretty rank. At some point a guard had been gracious enough to remove it. Gabe was surprised the guard hadn't just dumped it on him. With the cameras on him, they hadn't taken any more swings at him, but he'd fallen asleep with his head hanging down and dark bruises and little scrapes around the edges of the shackles from the weight of them chains and the shackles.

It took a lot of effort, but finally Ketty managed to convince General Grant to let her perform Gabriel Roberts' interrogation. Yes, she was very much emotionally invested in all of this, and that wasn't a good thing. But her closeness meant she knew what their prisoner was also emotionally invested in, and that was a very, very good thing.
The guards had set the prisoner up in one of the rooms made expressly for this purpose. There was a plain table, two chairs, and camera in the corner to keep watch. The prisoner was handcuffed and waiting inside when Ketty arrived at the door. Though she was still shaken over what had happened to Slate and her sister, she didn't show it at the moment. She was completely pulled together with a crisp uniform and tied-back hair. She had a folder of papers in her hand and her side arm concealed at, well, her side, but that was all she brought with her for now.

Gabe was exhausted. His hours at the firehouse had to be picked up because the last three days had seen three fires, one at one of the greenhouses, one to part of the courthouse and one to the elementary school. Thankfully, no one had died in any of them but there was substantial damage and some major and minor injuries. Gabe had sustained some first degree burns on his left forearm and that was all wrapped up in gauze under his shirt sleeve. He had been on duty for the firehouse for over forty-eight hours and now was allotted twenty-four hours of his own time. He'd been granted a leave day as well because of the extenuating circumstances.
So Gabe was at the Jujube. Sadly, it was busy as hell for a Thursday night and everyone was talking about the fires. He told Sadie he was going to find a booth in the back because he needed to get away from the fire talk for a little while and he managed to find a recently vacated booth tucked into the farthest corner, where he chugged down half his beer and then rested the bridge of his nose in his finger and thumb with a sigh. He couldn't keep up with this much longer. He knew the inevitable was coming. Eventually they'd catch the arsonist, and if Gabe wasn't there to step in and kill him, he was going to give Gabe away. He started thinking about Sadie and his relationship with her.
He might've gotten away with being Eli Potts for the rest of his life if it wasn't for the arsonist. He was pretty sure he could be happy living as his alter ego in this little town...with Sadie. Gabe wasn't allowed happiness though. So much had gotten fucked up so quickly for him once he'd come her. He had no idea how to fix things. Also, it was only a matter of time before the WA attack Sinai anyway, and then it just wouldn't matter. Gabe will have gotten all of them killed. And they were all innocent. Maybe not completely innocent, but they didn't deserve annihilation just to move the WA border farther east as revenge for the Pukwana attack. Gabe sighed and tried to turn his thoughts off. He failed.

When they'd finally gotten back to Sadie's place, she'd insisted that Eli take a shower. She would be fine on her own for a few minutes as he cleaned up after...all of that.
In the meantime, Sadie went into her room and sat on the end of the bed. She'd intended to get changed, but she only got as far as unhooking the bracelet on her wrist before she started staring off into space, thinking about that scene a few hours before in the hospital room.

Four days after Ketty's birthday came Sadie's birthday. This was something that had annoyed Sadie her whole life. It always seemed like Ketty's birthday was such a big deal, and by the time Sadie's rolled around, everyone was tired out. It was totally not cool.
But ever since Sadie had become associated with the bar, February 19th was party night. Everyone was invited, and a lot of people came. People liked her, yeah, but this probably also had a lot to do with the large amount of free alcohol that Sadie graciously provided.
And despite the snow, this year's party was pretty popular. Sadie was having a pretty awesome time. Her favorite band in town played a set, they let her sing along on a few songs, she drank a bunch, and she had an awesome boyfriend who was totally in love with her at her side whenever she wanted to lay some birthday kisses on him. So yeah, awesome.
But every party had to come to an end. This one wasn't quite over, but it was getting late and a lot of people had left to trudge home in the snow. At the moment there was a crowd a little smaller than the regular Sunday night crowd. They were still having a good time, though. Sadie was behind the bar, pouring herself a new drink.

Ketty was on her way down the main hallway of the base, on her way home after a late night shift at the main gates, when she ran into Eli. Just the person she'd been wanting to see.
"Mornin', Potts," she greeted, slowing down.

"I still don't understand how you don't completely die of boredom sitting around here," Sadie shook her head. "When I'm not around to be entertaining, I mean."
She and Gabe were at the firehouse. It was Sadie's night off at the bar, which inconveniently fell on an evening where Gabe was on call for firefighting duty. The two of them barely saw each other lately as it was, so Sadie decided to pay him a visit.
She'd been there about an hour already, and now the two of them were in the kitchen, getting a snack.

Working the bar on New Year's Eve wasn't exactly a relaxing job. But Dave wanted the night off, so Sadie couldn't really deny him a little break. It worked out all right, as she kept Gabe close by so she could still hang out with him as she served customers. The unfortunate thing was that there was hardly ever a lull. But seeing as Gabe was a customer himself, Sadie made sure to give him extra attention.
"Do you need anything?" she stopped in front of him with a smile after handing a few off-duty soldiers a pitcher.

The Sinai Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony tended to be a weekend long affair. It started early Saturday with a bazaar - the town square was full of small tents and stands of merchants selling specials and discounted merchandise, food, etc. There were all kinds of activities for kids to take part in while their parents wondered. It was generally a jolly time despite the colder temperatures. The lighting ceremony would take place at night, with the Mayor lighting the tree. Sunday's activities were the same as Saturdays, just carried over to extend the celebration into a two-day weekend event.

Dave wanted to pick up more hours, so Sadie suddenly had Friday night off! It was pretty fantastic. After getting off the phone with Dave, Sadie hung up and called Eli right away. Hopefully he was free. Also there was something she needed to ask him that she kept putting off.

Sadie really didn't like that she couldn't play her guitar Saturday night, especially since this was the first performance that Eli would be attending. There was nothing she could do about it though, so she got her buddy Frank to play backup for her instead.
The bar was packed more than usual for this show, no doubt because of the deadly rumor combo of supply run attack injuries and supposed Colonel-bartender-transplant love triangles. To add fuel to this fire, Sadie did make sure there was an empty table right in front of the stage with a sign saying RESERVED in large, easy to read print. This table was for tardy (according to plan, of course) Slate, but there was another one nearby that was saved for punctual Eli.
The show got underway not terribly long after its scheduled time, and after an intro talking about how the cast screwed up her ability to play, Sadie got into the singing. Sadie's music was of the traditional country variety; she did a lot of torchy ballads, as well as more upbeat stuff. The upbeat stuff was more fun to play with her guitar, though. Tonight she made sure to sing her best material -- she had a firefighter to impress, after all.
Once she had gotten through about three songs, Slate was still M.I.A. Sadie could tell the gossipy natives were getting restless. It was pretty fantastic.

After parting ways with Slate, Sadie headed straight for Eli's apartment building. She wasn't sure if he was going to catch him or not, but since she was already out and walking around, she figured stopping by was worth a shot.
When she made it to his apartment, she knocked on the door and bounced on her feet a little impatiently as she waited.
