Sadie still wasn't sure if she should be doing this, but it was too late to back down now. She was already at Gabe's door and she had already knocked on it. If she left now, he'd see her going down the stairs and walking across the farm, so she was stuck.

Farm reunion thing. )

Gabe had been working in the wheat field when he'd heard some of the other workers nearby talking. Normally, Gabe just zoned out and ignored them. He never tried to talk to anyone. He kept to himself to avoid confrontation. It was the subject of their conversation that set him off. They were talking about a new report about water contamination in Madison. He knew specific code words in their conversation and his eyes widened.

Earlier in the evening Midian had dropped off a box. It was from Sadie and contained various things Gabriel had left behind in her apartment. Sadie wanted to give them back, understandably did not want to bring the box by herself. Madge thanked Midian and assured him the box would get to him right away.

She waited until after sundown though, so she would be sure Gabriel was back in his apartment. She carried it over to the tractor garage, looking at the few items at the top, some clothes and a picture in a frame. She didn't look through any of the other items, not wanting to invade Sadie's privacy. She doubted Sadie would have included anything that could be potentially dangerous. Gideon would likely disapprove of Madge's trust, but he wasn't in charge on the farm, so that wasn't important.

Once she reached the top of the stairs outside the apartment, she readjusted her grip on the box to hold it against her side and knocked on the door.

Knock knock knock.

Sadie stood on Midian's doorstep, looking down into the box she was carrying. It wasn't huge, just big enough for her to carry comfortably for a few blocks, but it was pretty full. Mostly it contained clothes, and Sadie was sure she could still smell Eli on them. For that reason alone she was loath to give them up, but keeping them was extremely unhealthy. Eli Potts didn't exist and never did. She shouldn't be hanging on to that. So she was giving it back. She was giving them all back. In a really indirect way.

The pie turned out pathetic. Awful. It was burnt and caved in on one side and it looked nothing short of inedible. As it pointlessly cooled, Sadie sat on a chair in her kitchen and stared at it for a long time. She even cried at little at one point. She couldn't show this to Midian. It was the worst pie ever. Ketty wouldn't even had made something that bad, and that was really saying something.

Sadie gets kinda crazy and puts the moves on poor Cappa. )

Gabe definitely saw the amazingly traumatizing dynamic of having betrayed an entire town, failed to redeem himself adequately and then be forced to live in said town. He was surprised anyone at all had been willing to give him a job, let alone provide a place for him to live that wasn't in the middle of town. He was grateful for it, and he pretty much did nothing but work his days away anyhow. Every now and then he was sent into town to make a delivery, which usually meant he returned with a new bruise and or wound. He couldn't blame anyone, really.

Things were finally settling down. And by "settling down" it really just meant that Jason wasn't getting the constant feeling that everybody in town wanted to lynch him. Just half of them. And a few people had even been civil to him. Cool but civil. All in all, not what he'd hoped for but it was progress and that was better than nothing.

He'd spent the first couple weeks mostly hiding at home when not off work but he'd forced himself to stop that. Meals were taken in the mess hall, errands were run as quickly as possible, and any down time besides that was still spent at home.

He sat at his usual table in the corner, staring down into his coffee.

There'd been many dates for the two of them -- all right, several dates and lots of random hanging out at his place or hers -- shoved into their busy schedules, but they'd yet to find the time for him to actually cook dinner. They'd finally managed it, though, which was resulting in Colt bustling around the kitchen and worrying ever so slightly.

Well, all right, more than slightly.

He glanced at the clock. Alice was going to be there shortly.

That was his cue to move into the living room and start pacing while he tried to be cool and failed miserably at it. At least it was in the privacy of his own home.

It took over two months for Sadie to finally gather up all of Gabriel Roberts' belongings from her apartment. She had been putting the task off and finally she decided that she could not longer deal with having the ghosts of another guy hanging around her living space. Job was more than enough. So she grabbed a big shipment box from downstairs and went around the apartment gathering items here and there. Pictures, gifts, toiletries, clothes from his Drawer, all of it went into the box with the least amount of lingering possible.

When she was finished, she closed the thing up and taped it shut. And then she stared at it. She didn't know what to do with it. Sell the items? Donate them? Burn them in a ritualistic fashion? She had no idea. Eventually she took the box off her bed and shoved it in the back of her closet. She was going to have to give this some thought and that needed some fresh air. She grabbed a light sweater and left the apartment to go downstairs, intent on going for a walk.

Sheriff Figgs was pissed off at the General. She was reckless. This decision was possibly worse than any decision the General before her had made. And not only that but Madge had to go and agree to let him work and live on the farm. Did she have to go and make his life that much more difficult? Really? Why was Peter not protesting this shit?

Gideon drove to the farm after finishing his shift for the day, in his patrol car and still in uniform. He couldn't scare Gabriel Roberts more than armed guards but he was sure going to try. If that fucker laid a hand on Madge of any kind, Gideon was not above blowing his fucking brains out. He made sure to take his time riding up the gravel drive and climbing out of his car, shutting the door loudly behind him. Hopefully Madge was around the house at this time of afternoon so close to dinner. He looked around for any sign of Madge, or Roberts, as he started up the walk toward the porch after reaching in through his window to honk the horn a couple of quick times to alert Madge to his presence if she wasn't nearby.

The soldiers trailing Gabriel Roberts' every move were a pain in the ass. Madge couldn't get too upset, they were trying to protect her, after all, but she didn't think she had anything to be protected from. Gabriel was extremely docile, and Madge was sure it wasn't an act. She'd gotten that impression when she spoke to him on the base and she still had it now that he was released and about to live on her farm.

Once General Grant decided to let Gabriel go within the city walls, Madge was the only one to offer to put him up. It wasn't a huge shock to anyone involved. Madge was just that kind of person. She thought working on a farm was much better for a wayward soul than wasting away in a jail cell. Or trying to scrape a living doing odd jobs in a town full of people who hated your guts. So she offered Gabriel a place to live and a job, and he'd accepted.

He'd arrived on the farm Wednesday with a military escort, and after showing Gabriel around the main farm house, she brought him out to the tractor garage. There was a shabby little one-bedroom apartment up there, all ready for a new tenant. She convinced the soldiers to stay outside and then brought Gabriel up.

"So, this is your place," Madge said with a smile, spinning around slowly in the apartment as she looked around. "Bathroom's in there," she pointed, "and right there is a closet to put your things."

Alice wasn't terribly excited about visiting her cousin at the bar tonight but sometimes you had to do shit you didn't particularly want to do. Tonight was one of those nights for her. She could have waited for Sadie to find out like everyone else when General Grant made a press announcement in the morning but she thought they owed Sadie more than that. So she trekked from the base to the bar, stopping once she was inside the door to survey the crowd tonight.

Then she started making her way through, weaving through and around people, stopping every now and then as someone tried to talk to her. She kept the chit chat to a minimum until she finally made it to a clear spot at the bar, where she stepped between two stools and leaned her elbows down on the edge of the bar. Then she waited as patiently as possible for Sadie to make her way down to her, trying, and succeeding mostly, not to look too horribly grim.

The recently-demoted Captain Wingate had taken to eating his meals at odd hours to avoid as many people in the mess hall as he could. Sure, he could just cook at home, but that would've been too much like hiding and really wouldn't help with the whole facing the consequences. But even so, he ate in the mess at odd hours and when he couldn't manage that, found a table in a corner away from everybody else.

This was where he could be found now, looking down at the half-eaten meal in front of him. He'd finish eating eventually, but the stress of the past week and a half, while completely deserved, had taken a lot out of him. He was more interested in just sitting and not particularly doing anything than he was in eating.

Plus looking down allowed him to avoid the gaze of the handful of people moving through the mess at this hour.

Alice woke up alone, in a hospital room with only the small light behind her bed on the wall on and dimly lit. Her hands all the way up to her elbows on both arms were wrapped up in casts of gauze. There were random patches of gauze throughout parts of her torso - her left outside of her upper arm, her right shoulder blade, the right side of her neck by the back of her jaw, a spot on the left side of her rib cage and a spot on her sternum. The one on her shoulder blade had been a third degree burn, some of the ones on her hand were second degree but other than the most of them had ben first degree, luckily. There were all kinds of burn lotions and balms lathered all over them before they were covered and no doubt in a few hours the nurses were going to come and redo all of the bandages so they could clean her wounds. She also had a gnarly bruise on her neck from the kick to the windpipe and various cuts, bumps and bruises from the fight as well.

She hated hospital gowns. Worse than hospital gowns she hated the heart monitors which they'd had to attached under her gown to her chest since they couldn't put it on her finger. More than any of that and more than the dull pain she was still feeling and, oh the feeling that she was still on fire, she hated that she'd woken up here alone. The last thing she wanted after failing a mission - she considered if failed because the arsonist had died - was knowing that regardless, at the end of the day, she was still alone, as always.

Alice was getting too old for this shit. The snow was just finishing up its melting and while that made tracking easier in some cases, the rain that had started falling in the morning made it a freezing pain in the ass. She was pretty sure she was going to catch pneumonia at this point and she didn't think the arsonist in the woods. He was probably sneaking around town looking for his next target.

Alice had one squad, working from the southeast corner toward the northwest. Other squads were working from each corner, attempting to meet in the center, hoping to catch the arsonist in the process. They'd searched for nearly seven hours so far today after dredging the lake areas before they'd found him hiding in a tree and given chase.

Burn baby burn! )

The arsonist was still at large, which meant Sadie was still stuck on the base. It was pretty torturous. No, make that extremely torturous. She was stuck on the base and without work to distract herself, she had nothing to do but think nonstop about her lying spy ex-boyfriend, who happened to be somewhere on base as well. It was awful. And on top of that, she got pity and sympathy faces from nearly everyone she saw when they weren't just flat-out gawking. Yup, there she was! Silly little naive Sadie, all broken-hearted and pathetic.

So that sucked. At least she had her baking lessons with Midian to look forward to.

Tonight she managed to dodge meeting her parents for dinner. They were stuck on the base as well, and tended to be somewhat suffocating at times. But now she was alone and sat in one of the corners of the mess hall, picking at the mashed potatoes on her plate. She wondered where Eli was and what he was thinking right now. She'd long since given up chastising herself for wondering things like that.
