Rating: Green but with violence and lotsa water

Plot Outline & Teams

THINGS TO NOTE:

• In order to hit multiple locations at once, our villainess of the week (former-and-somewhat-current) HYDRA baddie Candice Lee has scattered various remote boxes connected to the trident from her central location. She is able to control the functions of the trident and the boxes they are connected to from there - hence the floods that occur around the world.

• Candy has sent her henchmen to each location to man the boxes. The henchmen won't be too difficult to take on - they're sort of a dumber offshoot of HYDRA. Think neckbeards and red hats with H.A.T.E. on them which actually stands for 'HYDRA Authoritarian Troop Enforcement' because why the hell not? Destroy the boxes, contain the floods, wipe up spills with paper towels, do whatever you want to the henchmen - there will be plenty for our heroes to fight!

• ENJOY!

Christine was in the middle of rounds when the nurses started rushing around, and a sort of madness took over the ER. People were yelling, televisions were being turned on and everyone seemed to be taking their cell phones out. Curious, she peeked out into the waiting room, and watched in horror as the news talked about floods around the world, natural disasters that seemed to spring at the same time.

It seemed even New York wasn't immune, and during Summer Streets -- she had been planning on checking it out at some point in the weekend. It was a popular event.

Due to where Metro's location was, she was fairly far from the incident, and she knew that they would most likely only get the overflow. Being so close to the end of her shift, she knew she had to get out there to help. Reaching for her phone, she called Bruce.

"Hey! What's going on? Are you okay? Are our people out there?" Frick, what a day to be stranded across town. The news report, still rolling in the background, was talking about how citizens were encouraged to stay home, transportation would be grounded, etc etc. There was no way she was going to get across town in a car, but fuck if the teams needed her? She'd find a way.

There wasn't that much that could pull Jane out of a good work daze. The sudden persistent pinging of the emergency alert on her phone. That chirp was enough to pull even the most dedicated scientist away from any fabricating, coding, advanced quantum physics she might be doing at the time. And it was awful.

The closest Avenger was probably was one fo the science bros in their own lab. Jane rushed over, holding her phone out in front of her like a beacon. Bruce was first.

"Have you seen this?"

Bruce was deep in an experiment when his phone rang. It wasn't all that surprising that Christine was on the other end, but when he heard the frantic tone in her voice, he realized something was happening and he was out of the loop. Which was confirmed moments later when Jane ran into the lab holding out her phone.

"Uh... Christine, where are you?" he asked, taking Jane's phone and quickly looking to see what was going on. "Jane, can you get in contact with Steve or Fury and find out if we're needed somewhere specific?"

His experiment was forgotten as he immediately shifted into crisis management mode, wheeling around to pull up news coverage of the event.

"At the hospital, but I'm leaving now." It was kind of easy to disappear into the chaos that was building, even if part of her felt bad.

The thing was though, she'd somehow made a commitment to these superheroes -- to Stephen -- and she wasn't about to break that. Oddly enough, even though he popped into her mind, she didn't consider asking him to make a portal. That was still weird to her.

"I'm going to start walking," she announced. "Looks like communications are still running, so text me details or let me know if you need anything okay?".

Hanging up, she sighed. At least she was wearing practical shoes, because this was going to be a long walk.

Since Queens was in the clear (so far, at least), Peter was focused on doing what he could around Manhattan. For now, that was plucking people up from where the floods were the deepest. Summer Streets meant that he wasn't having to make as many car rescues, but pedestrians were in just as much danger from the growing swells. When he heard over the comms that Christine was needing a pick-up, he took off in the direction of Metro general, swinging those who were struggling out of the rising waters where he could. Tracking down that box would be up next.

"Hey, anyone ever seen The Day After Tomorrow?" There was a collective groan from the couple he deposited high up on the roof of a building, followed by a 'too soon, Spidey'. Man, he really hoped things wouldn't get as bad, but it wasn't looking good. New York - despite being surrounded by water - wasn't equipped for this kind of catastrophe.

By the time he got to Christine’s location, the floods were sluggishly making its way down this block too - up to his knees when he landed in front of her. "Hey Doctor Palmer! Need a ride?"

Hearing her name from up above threw her off. After all, she was so focused on walking. There were so many people on the sidewalks, all walking in the opposite direction. She had been jostled and bumped and at this rate, she'd never get there.

With a beaming smile, she nodded at Peter -- Spiderman -- and slipped into an alley.

"You are a life saver," she commented. Emptying her pockets, she put everything in her purse which she then strapped close to her. Hair went up in a ponytail and she grinned. Who would have thought she'd be using the spiderman express one day?

Today was a good day.

"Let's do this!"

Meanwhile, up at the tower, a portal opened and Dr. Strange stepped through, the scene of water rushing in to a New York street set as the backdrop. He brought Wanda with him, since she was the only other person skilled at throwing up shields from the incoming water.

"Bruce, Jane." He nodded to them. "There's a general area for the disturbance, and it's getting worse. If you want to accompany me, we could use your help with the civilians. There's reports of harassment and assault going on, so...be careful. I can temporarily offer some relics for protection, if they decide to work for you."

That was always a risk, since relics were very, very picky. It was also more of a blanket warning for anyone without powers to be wary.

"Shall we?" he asked, gesturing to the waiting portal.

"... wait, Christine!" Bruce tried to keep her from hanging up, wanting to warn her to stay put and he'd find someone to come and get her, but she was already gone.

He sighed and was reviewing footage of what was happening when a portal opened to reveal Strange and Wanda. "Yeah, give me a sec," he said, jumping up and going to the cabinet that was packed with medical go bags.

Whatever was going on, it was likely that people would need medical attention. "We need to find Christine too," he said. "She was trying to walk here from the hospital."

This was complete chaos, all of this, but hopefully they could - together - bring some semblance of order and calm to the situation. Wanda went where Stephen did, of course, since she trusted him and they worked together well - besides, as an Avenger, she felt that holding off the water would be her best bet for lending a hand. Her mental powers couldn't track down a box.

They could, however, find Christine. Wanda let the range of her telepathy extend, a crimson glow to her eyes that shifted to something lacking pupils - she was revving up, gathering the oomph necessarily to expand her mind-reading capabilities like a mushroom cloud. She zeroed in on the doctor, tidbits and snippets flashing through her mind's eye. "Christine was picked up by a certain spider," she said. "She will be there too."

That must be a fun way to travel, via web slinging. But anyway, once they were all through the portal and where they needed to be, she assessed the storm and the waves - strong gusts of wind and rain that was practically dancing in the streets; right away she thrust her hands up, energy gathering around her palms and beginning to paint the spaces in between with scarlet - a force field, forming around her, a barrier in front of her.

She'd start with this for now.

Jane rushed through the portal and into very wet chaos. She immediately wished she was wearing rainboots but her regular boots had a solid rubber sole (Jane bought footwear based around what was least likely to conduct electricity - thanks Thor) so it could be worse. Her mind started whirling as soon as she stepped through the portal.

Clear a path. Get people out of the way. Find Christine. Help the doctor and keep the two squishies together if they could.

Peter swung as fast as he could with company in tow, getting an eagle eye's view of the persistent flooding from above. Many of the blocks they sped by were already evacuated, but there appeared to be a strange abundance of people milling around in red hats - and given the warning prickle that ran up the side of his neck at the sight of them, Peter guessed they weren't displaced from a headwear convention.

"Hey guys!" Peter landed with a splash in ankle-deep water behind Wanda's forcefield, making sure Christine was steady so they could both get their bearings. "Anyone know where that box is at? Is it really causing all of this?"

He’d take off to search every corner of the city if that meant protecting the people in it, but he was hoping anyone with them or over the comms would have a direction to point him in.

An alert popped up on one of the screens indicating that there was a large concentration of their friends/allies gathered together. Natasha wondered if Tony had programmed in an early alert protocol for catastrophes. On another screen she located the blinking indicator that had the approximate location of the box emitting the energy signature causing the chaos.

She tapped a few keys that patched her into the comms for Peter and anyone near him. "Hey guys, the energy emitting from the box prevents a precise location from being detected, but we've narrowed it down to at least the street." A quick glance at the narrowed map showed a location. "It's somewhere along Park Avenue. Do what you can to help the civilians, but our main focus is the box. Once that's contained, everything else should die down. Water levels are rising rapidly so stay safe. We've also had reports of people in red hats with the word HATE on them guarding the boxes and proving to be an extreme nuisance."

Christine gave a swift nod. It wasn't as odd as she expected, traveling the Spidey Express. At least her hair still looked okay.

The fact that she had a comm surprised her (but not really because really, Stephen probably had her bugged or tagged or something). Nat's voice made sense though -- civilians were the reason she was there. "I'll be useless in anything actually important, so I'm going to head over there and triage." There being the mass of people crying, screaming, and other horrible things. They were safe enough from the waters, but the residual trauma and debris was causing problems.

She glanced at Bruce. "You have our equipment?" There'd be bones to set, wounds to stitch...it wasn't going to be an easy day.

Stephen had, in fact, 'bugged' Christine's purse. It was one of those knowing moments of foresight, where he knew if there were people in danger, that Christine would be the one running to help them with little regard to her own personal safety.

Seeing how many red hats were around them, Stephen opened a small portal into the Sanctum. He reached in, giving Jane what looked like an ordinary bat. For Christine and Bruce, they were each given a stick that looked like it was broken off any old tree.

"These should work. If anyone attacks you, don't hit them too hard. Use a gentle touch," he advised. "The bat should knock them back at least twenty feet. The sticks will turn them temporarily into a frog. I'm locking these up again afterward."

He took a position opposite of Wanda so they stood back to back, moving his hands in arcane motions to turn incoming water into a narrow water spout, a tornado of water and washed away litter. The water moved toward a small group of angry red hat men closing in, who looked like they were from a wet t-shirt convention too. A couple of them were wearing chest-waders, which did nothing to prevent water getting in their britches when a waternado knocked them onto the ground.

More were coming though. The red hats weren't going to make it easy to find that box.

The energy coming from Wanda's hands swayed like flames in the breeze, flashing that brilliant scarlet crimson. In that intensity of color, she stood confident that Stephen was behind her, literally - she could sense his presence, and feel the back of him - and upped the ante just a little.

A twitch of her fingers, to the left and to the right, and the sheet of rain that battered against her force field bounced off, a curtain of water parting - she looked like Moses when she thrust her hands out and pushed the waves back from where they came. Taking Stephen's lead, she sent the parted waves at two groups of hate-hatters. They went for an impromptu surf, literally washed away and out of sight.

"Peter, I can look," she told him over the comm channel. "To see where the box is. Give me a moment."

Natasha had mentioned Park Avenue, so she focused on that - focused on one particular red-hatter, diving into his thoughts, pinballing through them. Her hands continued to hold the force field steady as images flashed in the back of her mind. "There is a red and yellow umbrella," she shared, trying to probe deeper. She was sure the man felt it and screamed, blood pouring from his nose - no one liked having their brain invaded, but Wanda didn't care. "The umbrella is attached to a silver cart."

"Yeah, I got it," Bruce said, relieved that Christine was safe, at least for the moment. Between the two of them and Jane, they ought to be able to at least treat the worst of the injuries on site while the others dealt with the water and the box. Worst case, Bruce figured the Other Guy could help clear out the red hat guys, but he'd prefer not to deploy that particular option if they could help it.

His eyes swept over the area and he quickly identified a spot that seemed safe and dry. "There," he said, pointing. "We'll set up a triage area. Once you guys take care of that box, get the injured folks there."

There were people in the nearby vicinity that they could help in the meantime.

Park Avenue, a red and yellow umbrella on a silver cart - Peter at least knew now to zero in on food, because Wanda’s descriptor brought to mind dozens of vendors he’d stopped by in the past. Finding the box with specific direction wouldn’t be too much of a problem, but getting to it looked like it was going to be messy. "On it - Thanks guys," Peter told Wanda and Natasha before setting off, swinging up and over the walls of water.

Away from Strange and Wanda’s defense, the red hats were swarming the flooded streets. Peter dipped down here and there to pick up struggling pedestrians, traveling by rooftop to sneak around the hate enthusiasts’ radar. Given how many of them there were, and given how much he really didn’t want to incite their aggressiveness, a surprise attack would suit him best here.

"I think it’s gotta be under the stand over here. They're guarding it." Peter stuck to the side of a building at the intersection Park Ave and peered around the corner of it. At the end of the block was a sad looking bent umbrella around which some red hats were gathered. "And - ugh - they’re eating hot dogs on soggy buns? With no ketchup? Or mustard?" That was all a crime against humanity all on its own, honestly, but that wasn’t exactly the kind of commentary people on the comms were looking for.

Right. Time to focus.

Peter poked his head around the corner again only to be met by several rounds of gunfire - all right, no surprise then - and began to rely on that tingle at the base of his neck. He swung himself from side to side in a zig-zag pattern, yanking a large dumpster out from an alleyway with his webbing. It was chaos as he flung as many baddies as he could right into the garbage. "There's definitely a metaphor here," Peter told the next red hat to come barreling at him with an unhealthy amount of anger, and into the dumpster he went, "if you were wondering."

By the time he stumbled to the hot dog stand, he was drenched with the water that kept on coming. He had to act quickly before his webbing sealing the dumpster shut dissolved in the floods. Luckily the cart had been overturned in the fight, leaving the box's location more than obvious. For once Peter used the full extent of his strength, slamming his fists down on the metal. The box splintered into several pieces, and almost immediately his spidey senses could tell the difference: the danger was receding.

"I couldn't save the hot dogs, but..." Peter spoke to the comm system and sat on the sidewalk's curb, feeling a little heartbroken over the state of the nearby concession stand. He'd take a moment to catch his breath before rounding up the rest of the red hats and continuing to help out civilians in the aftermath. "I think that worked?"
