Plot Outline & Teams

THINGS TO NOTE:

• In order to hit multiple locations at once, our villainess of the week (former-and-somewhat-current) HYDRA baddie Candice Lee has scattered various remote boxes connected to the trident from her central location. She is able to control the functions of the trident and the boxes they are connected to from there - hence the floods that occur around the world.

• Candy has sent her henchmen to each location to man the boxes. The henchmen won't be too difficult to take on - they're sort of a dumber offshoot of HYDRA. Think neckbeards and red hats with H.A.T.E. on them which actually stands for 'HYDRA Authoritarian Troop Enforcement' because why the hell not? Destroy the boxes, contain the floods, wipe up spills with paper towels, do whatever you want to the henchmen - there will be plenty for our heroes to fight!

• ENJOY!

NYC, SHIELD HQ. Basically central communications, the eyes and ears of the operation! Intelligence will be feeding in and subsequently ferreted out to the teams abroad. This team is the one who figures out where the boxes are and where the trident ultimately is, and they make sure everyone stays in contact so they don’t die. So like, glorified babysitters. Have fun!

Over the comm system, Tony knew that Pepper was listening in on the Venice team as their liaison. While Dr. Strange was good at finding mystical relic stuff, the technology part on the receiving end wasn't so easy to pinpoint. To compound matters, the satellites they had only went so far. They were like Google Earth trying to pretend they were the National Weather Service predicting a hurricane. Only over Europe.

They needed access, fast.

"Hey, Pep," he said, "are we on good terms with the European Space Agency? We need to borrow access to their Sentinel-1A satellite to focus on where this is being drawn toward. Also, while you're on that, you feel like pasta tonight? I can bring some to-go because we both know that I'm gonna get hangry later."

She would have preferred to be out there in her new suit to watch Tony's back, but there was no way they could be certain Morgan wouldn't escape whoever would have been watching her. So instead, Pepper was helping at Comm Central. Now all she had to do was keep Morgan from touching things. Ha. Ha.

"Morgan, stop." Her tone was gentle as she redirected her daughter's hand away from a button. "Russia doesn't really want to talk right now."

Then Tony came over her comm link. "Would it really make a difference if we weren't?" She smirked knowing full well Tony could access pretty much anything without anyone noticing. "See if they have lobster raviolis."

This was Darcy's first official mission and she'd be lying if she said she wasn't nervous. It was hard knowing that people she liked and cared about were out there risking their lives while she was safely ensconced at headquarters.

She was carefully monitoring the comms, listening for any sign of distress or opportunity to jump in and help somehow.

This felt like coming home though from the other side. Natasha was usually out in the field giving the reports instead of sifting through the information. Unless you counted those five years after the Snap in the main universe. She shook the thought out of her head and focused back on the screens. Everyone was where they were supposed to be. Some were encountering more issues than others and everyone was dealing with water. Water everywhere.

"Can't say I expected to be on this side of things again so soon," Natasha said quietly to Darcy. But Natasha wasn't sure what she'd be doing out there in the water either. She wasn't a super soldier or Asgardian or equipped with powers that would be helpful.

You all get to man the cars and jets and boats and planes and trains controlled remotely from Wakanda. This greatly helps those who are in other countries and need a quick escape or a quick way to navigate watery terrain. Everything will take place in Shuri’s lab, so she is there to assist should anything go wrong, but just don’t wear sandals in her sacred space. Exposed toes get you a one-way ticket the fuck out.

It had been a long time since Hope had driven a speedboat, even one controlled remotely. She vaguely recalled adventures on San Francisco Bay when she was a kid with a still-intact familial unit; the bay was always packed with boats anyway, and they’d bring a picnic, usually, and also find time for a hike on Angel Island. She loved the calm water and the escape from the fog of the city.

But right now, nothing was calm and she really had her work cut out for her.

The speedboat she was driving remotely from the lab bumped through the waves, and she swore she could feel her own teeth chattering each time she sloshed up and over a particularly troublesome wave, riding it out - but otherwise, it seemed to be going well and she was keeping tabs on the rescue operations in Venice, where Scott and Clint and Tony were. Her goal was to not flip the boat, sending it cartwheeling across the pissed-off sea waves. So far so good.

“Bringing it up on the left,” she told the team, cutting through the water and her whole body turning from where she was driving in the lab. It was actually kind of cool, to be there but not be there - and she also got to sort of be with Scott too, interested in his well-being and making sure he was safe. Her fiance was not going to drown today, not on her watch.

Then of course the kimoyo beads flashed, a hologram of Venice’s mayor popping up. Great. “Either of you speak Italian?” she asked her SHIELD companions. “Because he sounds concerned.”

Bobbi and Fury shared a look before Fury picked up the comm and started speaking in fluent Italian. He spoke no less than 7 languages fluently, and several others passably. It was part of why he was as good as he was at his job. It didn’t take long for the director to assure the mayor that they were on it, and that this was only going to be momentary. It was the same canned answer they’d prepared prior to this, and he’d already given it to several different heads of state.

Ending the call, he focused his attention on the cars again. Nick would be lying if he said he wasn’t ecstatic over the concept of using the Wakandan cars. During their tour the last month, Shuri had shown him the labs and allowed him the opportunity to watch, and now, they were doing this.

He really needed to get her working for him.

“You know Bobbi, you’re driving that car like it’s the size that matters. It’s all in the handling.”

Bobbi had smirked for being asked if she spoke Italian, but before she could say anything Fury was on it. So instead she “translated” for Hope. “He’s telling them the usual bullshit. Just a drill. Nothing to worry about. Blah, blah, blah.” She winked as she grinned. “It never fails to surprise me how easily they buy it.”

Driving remotely was like real life Grand Theft Auto. “Hey, Fury. If I run over a bad guy do I get an extra paycheck?” She grinned. “Do we have a destination?”

Not gonna lie, the cars looked fun as hell to drive - Hope was pretty fascinated by it all too. “Just a drill works, I guess,” she grinned back. “I think having their minds set at ease makes it better for us too.” Less flailing politicians to worry about so the superheroes could get the work done. She wasn’t sure how the Accords situation worked - if it was still good outside of the United States - but it didn’t seem to matter much right now. Other cities, in other countries, were being flooded and it needed to stop.

“I’d say running over the bad guys is a good destination? Aim for the red hats?” she pointed out. “But that’s probably up to Boss Man.”

Fury had made a point to tell all the teams ‘minimal casualties’ and while he was aware that damage from cars could be fatal …

Fuck it.

“Go for limbs,” he said coldly and yet with an amused undertone. “Bonus points if you manage to knock their hats off. And sure, why the fuck not -- keep track and I’ll see if you get something more around Christmas time.”

It was important to have fun in the workplace.

Tønsberg, Norway - Ancient settlements, burial mounds, and a Viking ship! Sea breeze and colorful birds! Plus a lot of water, fam, so take heed. Massive flooding threatens to literally drench the campgrounds and the lively city streets. The box you’ll want to destroy is located at the top of a stone tower, which was once part of a church from circa the 12th century. It’s already kind of in ruins but if you could not crumble it to dust entirely, that would be much appreciated.

Team 3 - Thor, Loki, Asgardians

In New Asgard, it was a different situation once Valkyrie and Thor received their notice of what was happening. Courtesy of helping SHIELD before, Sif was immediately dispatched to New Orleans to track down a relic, so they were down a person to help evacuate the Asgardian people to the higher ground above and around the village.

The seas were rising, the water cold and churning angrily as it beat against the dock's sea wall, sending spray up into the air and threatening to beat against the lowest row of homes and places of business.

Since the alert went out, Loki bolted outside of their house on the edge of the village, staring out at the stormy seascape with a grim expression. He seemed as though he was swiftly thinking of as many steps to take to keep things safe, in as little time as possible.

Brunn followed him out just as her winged horse, Strider, and their Rottweiler, Dain, arrived. The pair instinctively knew to move to the higher ground toward their home.

"I’m gonna go make sure we get everyone from the lower lands to high ground," she said, stepping up to ride Strider. "Dain, stay with Loki." She looked from dog to her future husband. "In case you need protection while your magic is otherwise occupied."

Loki managed to sound both cranky and affectionate at the same time. "Of course. Poor defenseless sorcerer, might over-extend himself should he throw knives at anyone stupid enough to approach." He smirked up at her. "Whatever shall I do?"

He took one second to nod at Dain but then looked up at her with an unspoken wish to be careful, even if he knew she was fully capable of taking care of herself. He nodded to her just the once before saying, "I will see to the shielding and protecting what is not covered."

"Careful. With that lip I might tell him to bite you just for fun," she said, the horse rising into the air on Strider as she returned the look he was giving her, a wish to be safe.

"I love you," she says with a wink, before she’s off and soaring down to the dock to begin moving their people.

"I love you too," he said as he watched her depart, already moving away to the shielding. He managed to recreate the palace shielding once before, for the warehouse in New York. When they moved to Tonsberg, that shielding went with them. This version was was almost enough to nearly cover the village, but the areas on either side wouldn't be protected. They hadn't had the resources collected to offer more coverage.

Once everyone was evacuated, Loki quickly engaged the golden dome of shimmering magic. It came down over the village and harbor, the water within instantly calming.

Despite that, the waves were still rising quickly to either side. This would not be easy to stop, without finding the cause of this unexpected calamity. And one that hadn't even been forecasted, at that. Thor would have known if the weather was turning foul, and Loki helped check the weather reports the night before any of the fishing fleet set sail.

While standing off to one side of the village, with Brunn's loyal rescue dog by his side, Loki looked as though he was trying to think of multiple spells. The waves slapped at the surrounding cliffs as easily as a child would bat around flimsy toys, but the cliffs were tall and steep there, so it wasn't washing ashore as easily. Even so, it wouldn't be long before the ground gave under the water's onslaught.

Thor had been watching Loki's preparations and was suddenly hit with a wave of nostalgia. When was the last time the two brothers had to face down a foe threatening Asgard? Not since Ragnarok, and even before that, perhaps slightly before Loki learned of his true parentage.

He'd missed this.

Extending a hand, he grinned at his brother. "To a successful battle, brother. May we be victorious."

One hand raised to hold a shield spell in place, Loki turned to grasp his brother's wrist and gave his brother an impish smirk, which meant he was more than up to this challenge. He was the most powerful sorcerer in Asgard now...or scientist by Midgardian standards, since Asgardian science and magic were the same. At last, his skills were needed. It was a nice feeling, even if this was a serious matter. It was better to leave Thor to what Thor was good at: protecting Asgard through the skilled use of brute force and sheer determination.

"I've no doubt in our combined capabilities," he replied. Even if Thor was rushing off to find the source of their troubles, he was certain that Thor could brew up a storm around him and push the water away from the other side of the coastline, so he didn't even bother mentioning it. "We will fare better than other places might, even if you're focused on the battle."

Loki let go and sounded like their mother a little bit, mindfully adding, "Do try not to leave a huge mess in your wake?"

“That is the beauty of water,” Thor said, grinning as he raised a hand. “It cleans up all messes.” The artificial storm was slowly being engulfed by a real one, a storm that he could actually control. Nature was tricky, and needed to be rooted in the energies of the world for him to have any semblance of power. This way, he could extend his own magic and take it over.

Which he did.

Manhattan Island - The most densely populated of all the five NYC boroughs! So that’s fun when it’s struck by a gigantic wave, eh? It’s also good timing because the weekend of the flood also happens to be the weekend of Summer Streets. This is an annual event that closes off specific stretches of road in NYC in order to give folks a chance to experience the streets in new ways. The sounds of honking horns and delivery trucks are replaced with the leisurely footfalls of pedestrians and the ring-a-ding-ding of bike bells. The box you’ll want to destroy is stashed beneath a hot dog concession stand along Park Avenue. Good luck!

Christine was in the middle of rounds when the nurses started rushing around, and a sort of madness took over the ER. People were yelling, televisions were being turned on and everyone seemed to be taking their cell phones out. Curious, she peeked out into the waiting room, and watched in horror as the news talked about floods around the world, natural disasters that seemed to spring at the same time.

It seemed even New York wasn't immune, and during Summer Streets -- she had been planning on checking it out at some point in the weekend. It was a popular event.

Due to where Metro's location was, she was fairly far from the incident, and she knew that they would most likely only get the overflow. Being so close to the end of her shift, she knew she had to get out there to help. Reaching for her phone, she called Bruce.

"Hey! What's going on? Are you okay? Are our people out there?" Frick, what a day to be stranded across town. The news report, still rolling in the background, was talking about how citizens were encouraged to stay home, transportation would be grounded, etc etc. There was no way she was going to get across town in a car, but fuck if the teams needed her? She'd find a way.

There wasn't that much that could pull Jane out of a good work daze. The sudden persistent pinging of the emergency alert on her phone. That chirp was enough to pull even the most dedicated scientist away from any fabricating, coding, advanced quantum physics she might be doing at the time. And it was awful.

The closest Avenger was probably was one fo the science bros in their own lab. Jane rushed over, holding her phone out in front of her like a beacon. Bruce was first.

"Have you seen this?"

New Orleans, Louisiana - Can’t you just smell the city? The Beignets and that powdered sugar, the crawfish, tobacco, and honey. Hear those Cajun laughs, all bayou and cajoling. There are two types of people in this world - those who have experienced the wonders of dipping a spoon into seafood gumbo dark as the swamp depths and those who haven’t. Y’all might not have time to do all that, but you will have time to save the world. Peter slapped a mosquito on his neck and scowled. This place was gross and humid and muggy and he really should have worn shorts but no one looked intimidating in shorts.

Maybe the leather jacket could have stayed home, even if he loved his jacket. It was just really warm and that crazy storm wasn't making things better. Peter could have sworn the sky looked swirly and purple and angry, and it kind of made him think that if Thanos was a weather? He would be like this.

Damage control was all they were managing right now, helping people get off of Bourbon Street and into the direction of the military. For once, Peter was happy to see that the government was eager to help and quickly too. The less casualties the better, or so had said Nick Fury. Quill was only slightly bristled when the older man had made it very clear that minimal people were to be injured or killed. Peter had protested that it was generally Drax, and not him and the terrifying look he'd received in response quelled all that.

There was a veiled reference to Estonia, but what did Fury except? It was a literal weapons fight club!! Ugh.

And there was Drax. Eating something. Again. And Sif, looking all warrior goddess like and impressive and Peter felt the need to puff out his chest and look as manly and intimidating as possible. He really wasn't very good at that though.

"This is ridiculous," he muttered to himself. It was looking for a needle in a haystack. "Drax, what are you seeing?"

"I do not know. I have Been Yay powder in my eye," said Drax, who was covered in white powdered sugar.

A bag of beignets tucked in the crook of one muscular arm, and a half eaten pastry was in his hand. He took a bite and began chewing very slowly, watching the waters rise as Quill tried and failed to impressive while standing next to the War Angel.

"I think we should listen to her," he added, his words surprisingly clear considering he was speaking around a mouthful of food.

Venice, Italy - One of the world’s most beautiful cities! It seems our villainess has struck the more remote areas - the places where the scenery is somewhat raw, where there are large barrier rocks and lagoon flora that can double as beach umbrellas or lounge chairs. What makes this urgent is that you all will have to save the ferries (packed with tourists, naturally) shuttling to and fro, between the beaches and city center. The box you will want to destroy is located at a bike rental station by nearby Hotel Mediterraneo. Buona fortuna!

Tony loved Venice. It was one of his favorite vacation spots to zip off with a hot date. He was even able to lure Pepper there a few times before they were dating...although he did himself no favors there by poking fun of 'cleanse resorts' meant to 'detox the body' or whatever. He vaguely recalled ordering a lot of margarita pizzas and mixed drinks. That utterly defeated the purpose of detoxing, but was a raging success as far as getting a rise out of his exasperated current wife. That's why it burned that anyone would drop off a way to flood one of his favorite places, particularly one that he shared more than once with Pepper.

Their current purpose didn't involve pizza or drinks, but to keep an already doomed city from flooding even more than it sometimes did. Venice was already sinking, as if this helped matters, so it was kind of like a 'enjoy it while you got it' situation. Before they could pinpoint the location of what was making this happen, a lot of unlucky tourists were currently being bumped around by the sea rushing in. The sea was anything but serene. It was quickly becoming a churning cauldron, and several smaller crafts and ferries full of tourists were bobbing around the lagoons as the water pushed toward the city.

"Welp, we've already got issues," Tony said over the comm to Scott and Clint. He swooped down to save someone on a jet ski, since their afternoon of fun and waves was turning out to be a crappy experience. "I'll get that ferry on the left, if you guys want to help the one on the right? Scream if you need me. I'll hear you over the rest of the screams. Pinky swear."

"On it. I've got eyes on a boat." If he wanted to be pedantic, this was technically a Hawkeye job. But what Clint supposed to do? Say no when someone asked him for help? Even with a low throbbing headache, he could fly a plane. Dodging through the crowd tourists, his black tac suit (still no Hawkeye purple) standing out among the tourists in their bright T-shirts, Clint made his way to the docks beside Scott.

"Can you start this thing?" he asked Scott, tossing the weapons cache Tony had packed into the back of the boat.

Honolulu, Hawaii - Here in paradise, Candy had her sights set on Magic Island. It’s a man-made peninsula, boasting an unprotected beach with smooth sand and waves that are usually calm. The keyword is usually - not so much today, unfortunately. There is a large park within the interior of the peninsula, with plenty of spots to throw a barbecue or go for a good hike - this is also where you will find the box; in one of the restrooms, specifically.

While the other two had a good way of staying out of the water, Bucky found himself up halfway between his ankles and knees on arrival. He wasn't easy to sweep away in the water, but it was going to get harder to wade through it if the waves got any deeper. Which it seemed to be doing.

While people ran the other way, he marched forward toward the lagoon. He helped out when a couple crying kids standing on top of a picnic bench were handed off to worried parents. "Get to higher ground," he told them, giving them a curt nod before he continued, trying to find the source of why the island was being inundated.

He saw several red-hated men milling around, not really running, but some of them harassing those trying to escape. One bearded man in a red hate with HATE sewn onto it with white thread stepped into his path, blocking his way. As he raised a stun baton and came at Bucky, he yelled out, "Hail...!"

Between one breath and the next, the man had a broken arm and a punched face. Bucky didn't hold back on that metal-fisted punch, either.

"...didn't...get to say Hate," the man weakly spit out from fat lips and a dislocated jaw, along with literally spitting out a couple of his teeth.

"Don't care," Bucky said, busting the stun baton in half and throwing the pieces aside. He left the injured minion behind, curled up in a fetal position amidst the rising water.

Even though he was sure that Sam and Carol heard that exchange from up above, he said into the comm they were sharing, "We've got multiple hostiles on the ground. Look out for red hats."

"Got it," Sam said.

His primary goal was to move innocents out of harms way, though being able to easily identify who was innocent and who was hostile would help with that mission. He was also keeping a close eye on Bucky to make sure the man didn't literally get in over his head, though he wouldn't exactly admit that.

He grabbed a couple of kids who'd been hiking when the flood waters began to rise and flew them out of the danger zone before returning and zeroing in on several red hatted men approaching a family attempting to have a nice barbecue in the park.

"Picnic grove due East is under attack," he said, swooping down to lend a hand.

Accra, Ghana - The pristine, powdery sands of Bojo Beach are a beautiful contrast to the more dusty feel of the city. Thatched umbrellas dot the shoreline, looking out over the span of the crashing waves. In general, lifeguards remain on the beach but it’s advised that only experienced swimmers tempt the notoriously powerful current, which is even more angry today. Like the task in Venice, those on this team will be responsible for rescuing the little boats gliding along the water and coming from the suburbs of Accra. The box you will want to destroy is located in the only refreshment option available on the beach - which is another thatched-roof shack serving chilled drinks.

Bojo Beach was usually quite beautiful, T’Challa thought. It was clean, pristine, with gentle golden-hued sand and cool water that lapped at toes like fizzy brine. Today, however? It seemed angry - everything about the location seemed tumultuous. There was a storm raging, screaming beneath the darkness of the clouds. Gulls were being tossed like paper, flashes of white in the grey as they struggled against the heavy wind; the sky was slicked with lacquer, blotting out the sun entirely, waves crashing down and jarring the bones of those who scrambled for safety. However, there were still people trapped out on the water.

And there was a box responsible for this whole mess, a box to find and destroy.

The rescue boat they’d arrived in was an efficient, vibranium-constructed aide - more were driven remotely from Wakanda, both here and in Venice where the main concern was beachgoers being rowed to shore in a boat that had no engine carefully protected from the elements, and could tip quite easily. King T’Challa was one cat who disliked water (as most cats did), but he would prevail.

“Do you need me to go out on the rescue boat with you, my friend?” he asked Steve, who he assumed was a Super Swimmer in addition to a Super Soldier. “Otherwise, I will look for the box. Stay in contact either way though,” he added into his comm device. The panther habit was obviously waterproof, but still - this storm was intense no matter which way you turned.

Steve, like T’Challa, was a rock in the wind and rain. It looked easy, but with as unrelenting as this storm was even Captain America was beginning to feel worn down some. But people needed him. He just braced himself and let that soldier stubbornness fill him up. His stoicism renewed as he considered T’Challa’s question. Splitting up had its merits, but staying together meant having someone to cover your back. It was damn hard to see far in this.

Steve took a deep breath through his nose then let it out. “No,” he answered. “We don’t have time to waste and can cover more ground if we split up.” He turned to look at T’Challa. “It wouldn’t be the first time I ended up in the drink.” The war had put him in the weirdest circumstances sometimes. “If you find the box let me know and I’ll have them bring me back.”

“Indeed, I assumed it was not the first time for you,” T’Challa chuckled grimly. The box needed to be found as soon as possible in order to stop this torrential downpour - but for the love of Bast, it really was difficult to see. On the shore he could make out splashes of red mixed in with the sleet of grey but he was unaware of what that possibly could be. Only one way to find out.

He hit the ground running, eyes on his surroundings and ears attuned to the various comm channels - both to Steve out on the boat, and the ones sharing info back in New York. He also had Shuri on a channel as well, since she was driving one of the boats. But the red, he discovered, were actually men - they seemed to be all congregated together. Guarding something - guarding the box?

Unfortunately, he couldn’t get there on his own. It would be a two-person job. “There’s something further up the beach,” he told Steve. “I’m coming back to meet you, then we can head that way.”

Sloshing in waist-deep waves (catshatewatercatshatewatercatshatewater), he added, “Release the rope,” and reached out to help pull the boat safely to shore with an oomph of enhanced strength.

They had hauled some people out of the drink. Some were in better shape than others. The boat was, fortunately, on the way back to pass them off to the ground emergency crew when T’Challa gave the call. Steve had to lift his voice as he replied. “On my way!”

Instead of tossing the rope to T’Challa Steve jumped the rail himself, rope in hand. Together...with Steve soaked from head to toe...they pulled the boat in. Once the rescue crew had things in hand he gave T’Challa a nod. “Lead the way.”

The help was much appreciated, since that boat was heavy and bobbing along in the swelling sea like a child’s bathtub toy - it was packed full of people too, of course, but then they were all safely out of harm’s way and T’Challa could breathe at least a little sigh of relief. No one would be drowning on his watch.

“I know this sounds insane but I think the hostiles are wearing...red hats?” he told Steve as they began to trek further up the beach. And the further they went, the more the air was thick with the taste of salt. “They are presumably guarding the box, but we’ll keep an eye out for - “

Keep an eye out for them, yes, but it turned out to be not that difficult at all. The red hats swarmed them, and T’Challa pulled free the sonic spear from where it was strapped to his back. Splat was the sound made from contact, because everything was soaking wet and he’d just bashed an attacker with the weapon - what he would give for some dry land at this point. Attempting to find one’s footing on damp sand was quite difficult but they would prevail.

“Red?” Steve gave T’Challa a slightly amused look. “I thought bad guys were supposed to wear black hats.” He wasn’t actually looking for an answer. He just followed along with T’Challa to….only get surrounded.

T’Challa’s target may have gone Splat, but the two guys Steve hit with his shield let out with shouts of pain. When he got it back a third got bashed off his feet. “You sure these guys have the box?”

“They must,” T’Challa sounded flabbergasted, because he could hardly believe it - but idly listening over the comm channels, he heard similar tidbits from other locations.

They didn’t appear to be too intelligent, but they were carrying weapons - stun batons and, of course, firearms. A spray of bullets was aimed at T’Challa but upon contact with the panther habit they just fell to the ground rather than in him; the energy of the projectile was absorbed, same with the energy when the spear made contact with a body.

He tapped the spear on the ground and a bubble of kinetic energy ballooned out, like a shockwave, knocking some of the others off their feet. Then he just grabbed one of the guns that had dislodged from the slippery grip of a red-hat man, pointing it at his face. T’Challa didn’t plan to fire it (guns were ridiculous and utterly primitive), but it seemed to bring results and he and Steve didn’t have time to play around.

“Where is the box??”
