Site Issues

Previous Entry Add to Memories Tell a Friend Next Entry
I know the site has had some issues lately. The main thing being that the site sometimes times out during peak times. I have identified what has happened, and to fix it, I am going to need to rebuild all of the webservers. This may take me a week or two to complete. I am going to continue doing what I can to keep things running (rebooting the servers every few days seems to keep it under control).

As far as the other issues, here is the list of known site issues. I will work on them as time permits.

* directory.bml hangs searching
* Comments still seem to be disappearing.
* Edit userpics page loading slowly for users with lots of userpics (Firefox is still slow but won't timeout and give an error as a temporary workaround)
* Adding friends via the admin console causes custom groups to get emptied
* Joining a closed membership asylum
* Timezones on update page not reflecting change in DST in United Stats
* align= and border= options in image tags being striped by the HTML cleaner
* lynx sitescheme warning
* blank preview page
* Sometimes not able to change custom colors
* stats/stats.txt not updating
* cannot log in with blackberry

Now as far as some of the criticism that has been posted here. I have simply not had the time to dedicate to the big issue of comment rot on the site. I know it is a huge problem, and I have done some tracing, and am getting close to pinpointing the problem, and once that is done, I am sure it will be something simple to fix.

Please don't feel that I have been ignoring these issues to work on other things like the sitescheme. The work on these has been done by our volunteers and takes only a few minutes of my time to implement them.

Also, do not feel that I have been ignoring all the comments, I have read them all but I just have not had the time recently to respond to comments. I will try to do better to make the time to do this.
  • Glad to see this mentioned. Thank you.
  • second!

    yo squeaky, don't sweat it. everybody knows you are doing the best you can do.
    i got customers in the server business, and i have a very rough idea of what you got hangin' to keep this site running - you are a badass!
    if you ever come to seattle, the first 2 rounds are on me.
  • Glad you're on it! I love IJ so so so much that I've got paid accounts everywhere (and a permanent account!), so I'm glad to see that you haven't given up on us yet!

    Just remember to breathe. :)
  • I like IJ and I like you, but if it's too much for you to do alone, maybe it's time to get help. Your expertise can't be needed for all the tasks of running a journaling system, so offloading some of the low-level stuff might give you time and space to deal with comment rot, which matters a lot.
  • Squeaky, do what you need to do. Don't worry about commenting back.
  • squeaky!! you are doing so much and i for one am very thankful that you give us these detailed posts of whats happening!

    it's a helva lot to do and if they are big problems - which i totally believe that they are, obviously, i would rather you work on it and not sit wasting time to replies. that could be done when YOU have time!

    you have a crapload of dedication to this site and it's users. and for that, i thank you.
    i have utter faith in you that problems will be resolved. until then, if i get hit with an issue you're aware of i'll just suck it up and remind myself that it's on the list. if it's something new, i'll let you know!
  • Please don't feel that I have been ignoring these issues...

    If this were the other site, I would think you were ignoring things. Since it's not and it's you and Insanejournal, that thought never once crossed my mind. You're one person with only so many hours in a day. As far as I'm concerned I had every confidence you were working on it and that the problems would be addressed.

    Hang in there and don't forget to get some rest and take care of you! :)
  • Glad to hear it. Wasn't worried.
  • I think you're doing an amazing job, especially since you don't have to be doing it at all. You are awesome so keep doing what you're doing and ignore the people who say otherwise.
  • Don't worry about commenting back! I think it's fantastic how hard you work on this site and I'm just glad that you got the quick reply on comments working. XD
  • Squeaky, I think you['re doing an awesome job considering that you're doing it all yourself. If you had a big staff at your disposal, I'd understand people being pissed, but all things considered, you're doing an awesome job.

    BTW, I have no trouble logging in via my BlackBerry, but I'm not using the mobile version of the site. More than half my posts are made via BlackBerry.

    I was wondering, if you have time to answer- is there any intention of eventually allowing paid users to receive emailed copies of their own comments? That's the only feature I'm really missing from LJ- often my comments have as much content as my posts, and I'd love to be able to keep a local archive of them like I did with LJ comments.
  • <3

    Where do I go with suggestions/requests, btw?
  • I just have a question, and sort of a mild complaint...

    my journals have been hit repeatedly with Anon comments that look to be from bots. I have three IP addresses that look pretty close to the same address.

    If it was one or two a few months apart it really wouldn't bother me, but is hasn't been. Just the last week 4 of my journals have been hit, and one up to 3 times. I know I can turn the anon posting off, but it sucks a bit because for my personal Journal some of my Livejournal friends can only post with Anon comments. (I've yet to convert them, but I keep trying).

    Is there anything we can do about this?
  • Honestly?
    I think you're doing a great job.

    If you hadn't of said anything about the site being down in Twitter, I would never have known, as everytime I'm here, I've had no issues.

    Besides, compared to SOME journaling services, a few explained downtimes is great. People need to learn to chill out. That this is NOT LJ/SUP, that the issues WILL be addressed in a timely matter.

  • Personally I haven't had many problems with the site, but it's good to know you are still working on it.

    Keep up the good work. ^_^
  • Thanks for this notice, all the work you've been doing, and your resolve to improve upon your performance. :D
  • I know you are doing all you can. You *do* have work and a family life and other things too!

    We're hangin' in there with you, so know that the majority of us are behind you and will be patient.
  • Meh. You still rock my socks off! =D
  • I can't help but wonder if it isn't time to abandon the sinking ship that is InsaneJournal.

    Clearly you don't have the time, knowledge or resources or any combination of the three to clear up the mess that lies in front of you. I know that you are somewhat loathe to trust volunteers to these issues as they would include site and member-sensitive information being shared and I can respect that.But perhaps some other sort of team-effort is in order. There must be some alternative solution to the two extremes.

    This endeavor seems a bit too excessive for one man to run alone.
  • What about my abuse ticket from April 10th? Seriously, this is getting ridiculous.
  • data point for you

    So far (knock wood) [info]lightning_war and its associated journals have not suffered comment rot. So far.

    (I am NOT tempting fate here!!!)

    We have a rule in our game, because we don't like deeply indented threads or comment trees that collapse, that instead of replying to comments, we make new comments on all the RP posts every time, and then when you get the 50th comment it paginates, which is much easier to read than going back and forth, back and forth, back and forth, in trees of collapsed comments where it's easy to lose your place.

    Is it possible, since many of the complaints have been about important RP posts with hundreds of comments, that something involved with the comment collapsing/threading is causing the problem?

    (Also, if this is a contributing factor, other RPers may wish to try to do it the same way we do. Here's one of our mercifully-still intact long threads.)
  • Doh! *pets and pets* I hate to mention this, Landlord dude, but I've been having a problem that doesn't seem to be mentioned in any of the recent posts, though I haven't gone through all the comments to check. When I try to change my default security setting for all new posts to private by pasting set newpost_minsecurity private into the admin console, it always tells me I've successfully changed it, but then when I post a new entry it's always back on the public setting. Waaaaaah! Am I doing something wrong?
  • Thank-you for continuing to work on it and keeping people informed.
  • Don't sweat it, dude! We'll get by this.
  • I personally love IJ (or this wouldn't be a permanent account), so you can count on me sticking around.

    The only thing that worries me is comment rot, but I've always heard of this comment rot issue since I came over in January and yet it's never affected me or any people I know. I'm grateful, too, because I don't want to lose anything. But I worry enough to the point that we constantly back-up our community just in case.

    I hope you are able to eventually resolve it, but until then, backing-up data works just fine for me.
