Site Issues

Previous Entry Add to Memories Tell a Friend Next Entry
I know the site has had some issues lately. The main thing being that the site sometimes times out during peak times. I have identified what has happened, and to fix it, I am going to need to rebuild all of the webservers. This may take me a week or two to complete. I am going to continue doing what I can to keep things running (rebooting the servers every few days seems to keep it under control).

As far as the other issues, here is the list of known site issues. I will work on them as time permits.

* directory.bml hangs searching
* Comments still seem to be disappearing.
* Edit userpics page loading slowly for users with lots of userpics (Firefox is still slow but won't timeout and give an error as a temporary workaround)
* Adding friends via the admin console causes custom groups to get emptied
* Joining a closed membership asylum
* Timezones on update page not reflecting change in DST in United Stats
* align= and border= options in image tags being striped by the HTML cleaner
* lynx sitescheme warning
* blank preview page
* Sometimes not able to change custom colors
* stats/stats.txt not updating
* cannot log in with blackberry

Now as far as some of the criticism that has been posted here. I have simply not had the time to dedicate to the big issue of comment rot on the site. I know it is a huge problem, and I have done some tracing, and am getting close to pinpointing the problem, and once that is done, I am sure it will be something simple to fix.

Please don't feel that I have been ignoring these issues to work on other things like the sitescheme. The work on these has been done by our volunteers and takes only a few minutes of my time to implement them.

Also, do not feel that I have been ignoring all the comments, I have read them all but I just have not had the time recently to respond to comments. I will try to do better to make the time to do this.
  • I can't help but wonder if it isn't time to abandon the sinking ship that is InsaneJournal.

    Clearly you don't have the time, knowledge or resources or any combination of the three to clear up the mess that lies in front of you. I know that you are somewhat loathe to trust volunteers to these issues as they would include site and member-sensitive information being shared and I can respect that.But perhaps some other sort of team-effort is in order. There must be some alternative solution to the two extremes.

    This endeavor seems a bit too excessive for one man to run alone.
    • o.O Are you sure you're not getting IJ mixed up with GJ?
    • I think you're overreacting in kind of a harsh way, dude. I mean, the service here is great! The downtimes are barely even noticeable, your icons don't disappear as soon as you upload them, and the maintainer actually keeps us informed. Where's the problem? It's obvious the negatives are getting worked on. No need to be weird about it.
      • It seems you're one of the lucky few that hasn't experienced the major problems that a good majority of the userbase has. Consider yourself quite lucky.

        Icons may not disappear as soon as you upload them, but if I had to make a decision between icon rot and comment rot (something no one should ever have to do with a service they're paying for, as many users are) I would choose icon-rot in an instant.

        The maintainer keeps us informed to a degree - he's not entirely AWOL, no. He is not, however, as informative as he once was. He doesn't have enough time as one person to man a site this big. It is no longer a hobby and he refuses to recognize that what he now owns is a small company and a company needs competent and capable employees. He is one man trying to run a 10-man (or more) ship.

        Based on your comparisons, I believe you're comparing this site's faults to those of GJ. While I respect that yes, this site is worlds better than GJ, you're missing the point entirely. Despite all of the empty promises of GJ employees, the site was still entirely free. The only people who had given money were those who had donated, and while I feel for them, many people here have purchased service. In some cases, upwards of over $100 have been spent on accounts, icons, etc. If you pay for a service, you expect it to work, or you expect to be monitarily compensated.

        I wouldn't be very pleased if I went out and purchased a meal with a few rotten vegetables in it. This is the online product equivalent.
