Selby put the button-front flowered crepe blouse back on the rack with a sigh. Bailey loved pretty shirts, but the only ones Selby could find today looked more like frumpy bedjackets her grandmother would buy. She glanced over the clothing rack at the weirdo clerk with the three-tone hair who was slapping folded jeans into wall cubbies with a violence communicating that they hated their life. Selby decided she hated their life too, and headed for a more upscale shop.
Across the walkway was a jewelery boutique, and Selby's pace quickened as she immediately had several ideas for Bailey's gift. She could certainly find a cute charm bracelet or a unique pendant necklace. But the item that immediately caught Selby's eye was an amazing convertible piece featuring gold filigree inset with a pale purple stone.
"Would you like to see it?"
Selby looked up at the saleslady, a woman about her mother's age but with a far trendier haircut, and nodded. The woman instantly produced keys from the cuff of her blouse, almost like a magician's trick. "You can wear it as a bracelet or as a lavalier necklace, and the drop chain doubles as a ring," she said, unlocking the case.
Selby tried it on, imagining the delicate gold metal around Bailey's hand rather than her own. As she considered, the saleslady discreetly placed a card on the counter revealing the item's price. Never one to ask for a markdown, Selby produced one of her credit cards and waited while the purchase was rung up and packaged in an attractive box. It was awfully plain for a birthday package, though. She'd have to give it a DPN giftwrap makeover when she got back to Ainsworth. In the meantime, she had the whole morning free to explore the mall.
