OD: Secrets of the Darkest Arts

Gideon took the book when Minerva offers it to him. He examined it, visually and magically, to make sure it was safe before he laid it flat on the table where anyone who wanted to join him could also look.

The book was large, hand-written, and bound in faded leather. The anonymous medieval writer's hand was shaky and the letters resembled distressed spiders, but it was readable. Dumbledore's notes helped.

"This is abominable," Gideon said, "Yes, after the murder and the spell, the caster places the soul in a relic of some sort. The object becomes extremely durable. One way to tell if you've found one is that you can't destroy it by normal means. The author found that utterly hilarious, apparently."

Gideon turned a few pages. "OK, so the horcrux -- horcruces, I suppose. Anyroad, they can affect your mind and bend you to the will of their master, and eventually allow them to possess the owner. It withers the body. Anyone here read Professor Tolkien? This sounds really familiar.

"Oh, and to make matters especially lovely, it's possible to regenerate the body of the deceased Dark Lord, although the potion is far beyond what I could or would do."

Gideon swept his hands through his hair, looking back at the Chief Mugwump's notes. There wasn't much to go on.

"So what you're saying is we need to find a volcano," Sirius muttered; he'd come up alongside Gideon and was peering over his shoulder at the page with a frown; the script alone was anxiety-inducing. "D'you suppose He'd pick jewelry for His...horcrux vessel? Or do we think he's smart enough to have stuffed his soul into some pebble in someone's garden somewhere? And for that matter, does it say, is he actually trapped in whatever-it-is right now, like a djinn in a lamp, or...?"

Not that it truly mattered, but the idea of whatever was left of Voldemort's consciousness trapped in some small relic somewhere throughout eternity was a bit satisfying, Sirius thought.

"If He's possessing one of his followers, and it withers the body, we can keep an eye out for purebloods looking particularly sickly. It's...something, I guess."

"I reckon that means I'm off to socialise with our peers and find out who looks terrible and who might know about all of this. And touch base with some of our other friends." Fabian looked at Gideon, who knew which friend he meant. "Also we start looking at the peers of Mr Rosier. The living and the dead."

He muttered something under his breath about shitting bricks if You-Know-Who was a Lestrange.

"Yes, thank you, Mr Prewett, for volunteering. It would serve us well to know what the remainder of the Death Eaters know and how motivated they are to continue their mission." And perhaps even how much of a ticking clock they were up against.

"We would also might be best served by investigating what might actually destroy a horcrux, and if not that at least how to best contain one."

Peter remained quiet and stone-faced at this. He didn't want to think about the Death Eaters wanting to continue their mission. He'd thought that things had moved on and he was in the clear. Knowing that Voldemort could still be out there in some form meant that the Death Eaters were going to come knocking at his door. The question was whether he would bother answering at this point.

"Gideon and I will be taking that up with some of our contacts but I'm sure there are others here who have equally good resources," Fabian suggested. "It should be a multi-pronged attack."
