ARRIVALS
[info]questling
2019-03-14 11:10 pm UTC (link)
The meeting was set to start 8 PM, however given the nature of their work, the Order wasn’t the most punctual of group. Tonight also marked their first official meeting since before the Battle of Godric’s Hollow. There would be time to breathe, enjoy a few snacks, and mingle before McGonagall called the meeting to order.

Peter didn't actually want to come, but knew that his friends would find it suspicious if he didn't. He showed up a bit late, fumbling with his pack of fags, and ate free food before speaking to anyone.

Fabian (and Gideon) arrived early with some of the food that Molly had prepared. Since Fabian was keeping lawyer's hours, he'd knocked off early and gone home to change and was now wearing Muggle jeans (button-fly, thanks), a warm flannel shirt, and a beat-up "leather" jacket and boots. The flannel shirt was unbuttoned enough that people could see that he was wearing a black t-shirt underneath.

“Oh brilliant!” Remus was never one to turn down food. Free food that he could recognize by nose that Molly made, well, there was no way that was not his first stop. He helped himself to two pasties — he absolutely needed one for each hand — before remembering his manners.

“You always bring the best food.” Remus took a normal size bite before smiling at Fabian. Six weeks later and he was just now starting to ignore the strange pull of skin. He had so many scars by now, but the three raking scars over his left eye and down to his jaw, now at their peak of ugliness, were by far his proudest. The last ones that bastard would ever land on another person. And he had the Prewett twins to thank for that as much as anyone. "Cheers."

"Pleasure's mine, though the spread is Molly's work, of course." Fabian took a closer look at the healing scars on Remus' face. "How are you holding up?"

"Find myself craving my steak a little more rare these days, but otherwise I retain my title as The Prettiest." The words came easily enough. These were lies so familiar that they might almost be truths.

A faint smile quirked at the corner of Fabian's mouth. "I thought that was supposed to be Sirius. Or maybe he's just the Prettiest Princess and the rest of us are just commoners." He took one of the pasties without bothering to figure out which was which. "Let me know if you need anything as we get closer to the full. I should have been faster with him."

At the mention of Sirius, Remus's gaze darted for the man. Not like he didn't know where he was. "For the love of Tolkien please don't let him hear that." The smile pulled into a grin, before trying to dismiss the offer.

"I should be fine. I survived the last with Peter whinging about rodízio and if it was nearly necessary to try to eat my weight in meat on his birthday. Which it was." Remus polished off his first pastry. Better to get a third now. "And we got him in the end. That's the important part. How are you healing up?"

"I'm all right. The bad thing was really the arterial wound and it was more a function of the leg break. And my jacket--" which might appear to be leather but was actually heavily enchanted dragonhide "--took most of what my shields, or Gideon's, didn't. Leg's still a bit ticky but it's more a matter of don't do something that might break it again for a few weeks." For someone who'd been as deep in the fighting as he had, Fabian had come away remarkably unwounded.

"And in case you're wondering, Gideon wasn't scratched either. Not even when he tried to land on Gideon and got Gideon's boot to his bollocks for his trouble."

"Good. I can't have anyone competing for the best cuts." The tone was still light, but the underside of it was anything other than that. Remus had surely put his body in the way of a few attacks. After all, what was one more? Especially when it could save someone else.

"And also quite brilliant to see you up and about. Barring any future fractures of course."

"My remit has only required me to attend one function since the battle that was likely to result in duels. And since Priscilla Lestrange's looks aren't enough to kill, I think I'll make it through the end of the fragile period, thanks." Fabian had to smirk about her or otherwise he was going to want to hex her.

Sirius arrived with Remus and headed immediately for the food the twins brought. He was hungry, and whatever they were about to have thrown at them- because he's pretty sure that this wasn't a reunion party- would be easier on a full stomach.

Things have been very busy at the DMLE, naturally. Alice and Frank are both likely if they can get out of work at all. Alice was able to get out first, so she went to the meeting, and hoped Frank would join them later. She is tired and starving. Yay for snacks!

STATE OF ORDER
[info]questling
2019-03-14 11:11 pm UTC (link)
Once enough people were arrived and the conversations starter to dwindle or pause, Minerva gathered everyone back around the long table, herself at the head of it where Dumbledore might normally stand. “Thank you all for being here tonight. It has been a long couple of weeks. I would first like to give the floor to Misters Prewett about some … housekeeping.”

Both of them stood up. Fabian got to start: "As most of you know, both of us are well-versed in contract law and bindings. Our remit includes the basics of some powerful bindings like Unbreakable Vows and the operation of the Fidelius, even though they're not exactly in daily use. As you may also recall, we each took a binding oath that's a variant of the Fidelius to ensure our silence on identities and so on and so forth." He carefully did not look at Peter, who had certainly skirted the boundaries of his oath while under the tender care of the Death Eaters.

"On the basis of some theoretical discussion with Gideon, I proposed a test: I should try to talk about my Order involvement with a sympathetic civilian on whom I could rely, and on that basis determine if I was still bound by the oath. Due to the nature of the oath, with the Secret Keeper, as it were, dead, the secrecy of the oath should be bound to each of the oathtakers. Simply, we should each be able to govern our own oaths, and open the secret to other people. And yet, I couldn't discuss it. My tongue was locked, as it was when the Headmaster was alive.

"Ergo, the basic syllogistic logic applies: the oath holds only if the binder isn't dead; the oath held; therefore the holder is not dead." He finished: Albus Dumbledore is alive."

Remus was contemplating whether or not he should go for another couple of pasties, when Fabian finished. He let that truth sit with him. Albus Dumbledore was the one wizard powerful enough and foolish enough to take a chance on him. He had always felt sort of indebted to the man. Remus had only just been able to start to make sense of his death. But now he wasn't.

"So, if he is not dead, then where he is? And why is he not here?" The question was asked to the room as it were rather than anyone in particular. Remus dropped his voice into a lower register before adding. "Don't anyone tell me he likes skee-ball."

Gideon took up the answer. "We don't know, but we did try to eliminate some possibilities. What we do know is that he's not anywhere we can detect with a location orb, and Hogwarts accepted Headmistress McGonagall, but it's more like he's only dead for tax purposes, as it were."

"I think we need to find him."

Frank is already ready to talk in this forum, though the notes that he was sure he'd brought cannot be found in his pockets. No matter, though, because he's fine with doing it off of the top of his head.

"I'm sure it's no surprise that things have been pretty chaotic. Public opinion is split and often wavering, but the one thing they agree on is that we're not doing a proper job of it." He grimaces at this, because it's partially his doing. "We get owls every day demanding more arrests. On both sides."

Alice looked to Frank as he was looking for his notes, and she's pretty sure he left them back on the kitchen table. Oops, bad fiancee for not picking those up.

She nodded in agreement to what Frank had to offer. "The main names getting tossed around though are the Blacks and Lestranges. Lots of suspicion, but not enough evidence though."

"The usual subjects then." And an all too familiar predicament. "No doubt we haven't earned any favour." The whole vigilante angle on what they had did was a bit extreme. Still much of what they did was technically outside of the scope of the law.

THE HORCRUXES
[info]questling
2019-03-14 11:13 pm UTC (link)
"I’m afraid I must burden us with more bad news.” Minerva paused, glancing at the faces around the table. They are all far too young, and had already been through so much. “While the so-called Dark Lord was fallen, he may not be dead. Albus Dumbledore believed that You-Know-Who--” She paused, steeling herself. “Voldemort had found a way to cheat death. It is only with the most terrible darkest type of magic.”

She placed The Secrets of the Darkest Arts on the table. She had found it when going through Albus’s office, now her office, just a week ago along with some of his notes. She hadn’t wanted to believe it, and yet, it made sense with everything she knew of the man and the monster.

“If you’ll allow me a bit of a lecture to provide context…” Minerva paused and when no one dissented, she continued. “To create a horcrux, a wizard first must deliberately commit the most supreme act of evil, damaging his own soul in a foolish quest for immortality. From that damage he is able to tear off a part of his soul and place them into an object.”

“Albus believed that … Voldemort had managed to do this more than once.” Her mouth curled tightly around those words, unwilling to say them, but also uncomfortable with their implications. “From what I have gathered, he may have even found one. Although I don’t know where it is nor or what happened to it. However, horcruxes are extraordinarily durable, and quite difficult to destroy. So, I’m afraid I am going to be asking more of you, again, to ensure that the Dark Lord might not rise again.”

OD: Secrets of the Darkest Arts
[info]disobliged
2019-03-15 02:40 am UTC (link)
Gideon took the book when Minerva offers it to him. He examined it, visually and magically, to make sure it was safe before he laid it flat on the table where anyone who wanted to join him could also look.

The book was large, hand-written, and bound in faded leather. The anonymous medieval writer's hand was shaky and the letters resembled distressed spiders, but it was readable. Dumbledore's notes helped.

"This is abominable," Gideon said, "Yes, after the murder and the spell, the caster places the soul in a relic of some sort. The object becomes extremely durable. One way to tell if you've found one is that you can't destroy it by normal means. The author found that utterly hilarious, apparently."

Gideon turned a few pages. "OK, so the horcrux -- horcruces, I suppose. Anyroad, they can affect your mind and bend you to the will of their master, and eventually allow them to possess the owner. It withers the body. Anyone here read Professor Tolkien? This sounds really familiar.

"Oh, and to make matters especially lovely, it's possible to regenerate the body of the deceased Dark Lord, although the potion is far beyond what I could or would do."

Gideon swept his hands through his hair, looking back at the Chief Mugwump's notes. There wasn't much to go on.

"So what you're saying is we need to find a volcano," Sirius muttered; he'd come up alongside Gideon and was peering over his shoulder at the page with a frown; the script alone was anxiety-inducing. "D'you suppose He'd pick jewelry for His...horcrux vessel? Or do we think he's smart enough to have stuffed his soul into some pebble in someone's garden somewhere? And for that matter, does it say, is he actually trapped in whatever-it-is right now, like a djinn in a lamp, or...?"

Not that it truly mattered, but the idea of whatever was left of Voldemort's consciousness trapped in some small relic somewhere throughout eternity was a bit satisfying, Sirius thought.

"If He's possessing one of his followers, and it withers the body, we can keep an eye out for purebloods looking particularly sickly. It's...something, I guess."

"I reckon that means I'm off to socialise with our peers and find out who looks terrible and who might know about all of this. And touch base with some of our other friends." Fabian looked at Gideon, who knew which friend he meant. "Also we start looking at the peers of Mr Rosier. The living and the dead."

He muttered something under his breath about shitting bricks if You-Know-Who was a Lestrange.

"Yes, thank you, Mr Prewett, for volunteering. It would serve us well to know what the remainder of the Death Eaters know and how motivated they are to continue their mission." And perhaps even how much of a ticking clock they were up against.

"We would also might be best served by investigating what might actually destroy a horcrux, and if not that at least how to best contain one."

Peter remained quiet and stone-faced at this. He didn't want to think about the Death Eaters wanting to continue their mission. He'd thought that things had moved on and he was in the clear. Knowing that Voldemort could still be out there in some form meant that the Death Eaters were going to come knocking at his door. The question was whether he would bother answering at this point.
