THE HORCRUXES

"I’m afraid I must burden us with more bad news.” Minerva paused, glancing at the faces around the table. They are all far too young, and had already been through so much. “While the so-called Dark Lord was fallen, he may not be dead. Albus Dumbledore believed that You-Know-Who--” She paused, steeling herself. “Voldemort had found a way to cheat death. It is only with the most terrible darkest type of magic.”

She placed The Secrets of the Darkest Arts on the table. She had found it when going through Albus’s office, now her office, just a week ago along with some of his notes. She hadn’t wanted to believe it, and yet, it made sense with everything she knew of the man and the monster.

“If you’ll allow me a bit of a lecture to provide context…” Minerva paused and when no one dissented, she continued. “To create a horcrux, a wizard first must deliberately commit the most supreme act of evil, damaging his own soul in a foolish quest for immortality. From that damage he is able to tear off a part of his soul and place them into an object.”

“Albus believed that … Voldemort had managed to do this more than once.” Her mouth curled tightly around those words, unwilling to say them, but also uncomfortable with their implications. “From what I have gathered, he may have even found one. Although I don’t know where it is nor or what happened to it. However, horcruxes are extraordinarily durable, and quite difficult to destroy. So, I’m afraid I am going to be asking more of you, again, to ensure that the Dark Lord might not rise again.”

Peter goes as white as a sheet and he feels clammy. He wants to remain silent, but he can't help responding, "So he isn't dead?"

Remus bumped Peter with his knee when he felt him tense up. This whole thing was one hit after another. It was definitely going to be a beer and sleeping pile type of night.

He gave Remus a sardonic smile. He needed ale and some smokes right bloody now.

And if Remus left some quiet point of contact with Peter throughout the meeting? Well, no one was going to say anything. This was what they did -- Remus, Sirius, Peter, and James -- they were pack.

Gideon wants to look at that book. "What does it say about conditions for a Dark Lord to rise again if his body is disintegrated?"

Fabian's eyebrow goes up and he looks kind of sick to his stomach before his brain turns on and he starts figuring out where to go and what to do.

"So...Dumbledore isn't dead. And He Who...uh, Voldemort isn't dead. Is anyone who died that night actually dead, or...?" is Sirius's very helpful response to the news

"Pretty sure Greyback is," Fabian announced. "Going to be really brassed if he's not."

"Aren't you brassed off yet?" Sirius asked, eyebrows shooting up. Not a particularly meaningful contribution to the discussion, no, but who would he be if he didn't chatter through a lecture from Professor McGonagall?

OD: Secrets of the Darkest Arts
[info]disobliged

Gideon took the book when Minerva offers it to him. He examined it, visually and magically, to make sure it was safe before he laid it flat on the table where anyone who wanted to join him could also look.

The book was large, hand-written, and bound in faded leather. The anonymous medieval writer's hand was shaky and the letters resembled distressed spiders, but it was readable. Dumbledore's notes helped.

"This is abominable," Gideon said, "Yes, after the murder and the spell, the caster places the soul in a relic of some sort. The object becomes extremely durable. One way to tell if you've found one is that you can't destroy it by normal means. The author found that utterly hilarious, apparently."

Gideon turned a few pages. "OK, so the horcrux -- horcruces, I suppose. Anyroad, they can affect your mind and bend you to the will of their master, and eventually allow them to possess the owner. It withers the body. Anyone here read Professor Tolkien? This sounds really familiar.

"Oh, and to make matters especially lovely, it's possible to regenerate the body of the deceased Dark Lord, although the potion is far beyond what I could or would do."

Gideon swept his hands through his hair, looking back at the Chief Mugwump's notes. There wasn't much to go on.

"So what you're saying is we need to find a volcano," Sirius muttered; he'd come up alongside Gideon and was peering over his shoulder at the page with a frown; the script alone was anxiety-inducing. "D'you suppose He'd pick jewelry for His...horcrux vessel? Or do we think he's smart enough to have stuffed his soul into some pebble in someone's garden somewhere? And for that matter, does it say, is he actually trapped in whatever-it-is right now, like a djinn in a lamp, or...?"

Not that it truly mattered, but the idea of whatever was left of Voldemort's consciousness trapped in some small relic somewhere throughout eternity was a bit satisfying, Sirius thought.

"If He's possessing one of his followers, and it withers the body, we can keep an eye out for purebloods looking particularly sickly. It's...something, I guess."

"I reckon that means I'm off to socialise with our peers and find out who looks terrible and who might know about all of this. And touch base with some of our other friends." Fabian looked at Gideon, who knew which friend he meant. "Also we start looking at the peers of Mr Rosier. The living and the dead."

He muttered something under his breath about shitting bricks if You-Know-Who was a Lestrange.

"Yes, thank you, Mr Prewett, for volunteering. It would serve us well to know what the remainder of the Death Eaters know and how motivated they are to continue their mission." And perhaps even how much of a ticking clock they were up against.

"We would also might be best served by investigating what might actually destroy a horcrux, and if not that at least how to best contain one."

Peter remained quiet and stone-faced at this. He didn't want to think about the Death Eaters wanting to continue their mission. He'd thought that things had moved on and he was in the clear. Knowing that Voldemort could still be out there in some form meant that the Death Eaters were going to come knocking at his door. The question was whether he would bother answering at this point.

"Gideon and I will be taking that up with some of our contacts but I'm sure there are others here who have equally good resources," Fabian suggested. "It should be a multi-pronged attack."
