Heh. I'll give BQM this, that was actually a pretty good, subtle little bit of storytelling and a very good use of the medium, there. Much better than anything overt - it's not like anybody's going to forget that Babs was the first Batgirl - but not so quiet that we don't immediately get that important punctuation to her claim of involvement. It must be me. I really liked Stephanie as a supporting Bat-verse character, as Cass' best friend, as Tim's girlfriend, I even liked her as the spunky Robin who was unaware Bruce was just using her to teach Tim a lesson. But she doesn't seem like a Batgirl to me. I just don't think Miller can convince me there's a reason for her to be Batgirl other than just because DC Editorial says so. Gail Simone posted at her YABS board awhile ago that Charlie/Misfit almost became Batgirl in the early talks, which would have been disastrous but only tells me the fact that Stephanie is only Batgirl because she's a known Bat-verse character who's not "radioactive" thanks to bad storytelling(like Cass), she's not, like Babs, disabled and as old as the woman calling herself Batwoman (I hate to put it that way, but honestly I never thought Babs was going to walk again after all her years as Oracle and why would she call herself "Girl" anything after all these years) and she's not a meta-human with powers which would make her stand out like a sore thumb in the Batclan (like Misfit). So Stephanie wins the title by process of elimination. Which works fine in an editorial meeting but not so well when you have to explain to jaded readers why she suddenly is "Batgirl". Just because Tim told her to stop wearing the Spoiler outfit and Cass dumped the Batgirl one is not a good reason. And I also hate Babs is again demoted to a "mentor" role - as if she didn't carry her own book for over 100 issues. But like I said it's probably just me. (Reply to this) (Thread)

I like that she's being stepped on by everyone and not giving up. The "death wish" comment set off all kinds of this-is-DC-we-can't-have-nice-things alarms in my head. Literally out loud at "I got better" -- obligatory! Ok, the hell she doesn't know how to sew!!! Her first costume was designed and created from scratch by her and herself alone! Since when does Steph not know how to sew? Like she bought the Spoiler costume at a Kwik-E-Mart or something? I can't decide whether or not I like the fact that Q. Miller referenced Babs trying to scare Charlie off of being Batgirl with Steph's autopsy photos. I think it's a very, very bad idea to reference Charlie as long as Charlie is still blatantly, painfully sitting on a "totally abandoned by Babs for no legitimate reason" bus. Without the Charlie mention, Babs comes across like an ass here, but understandably; Steph's running around in her costume. With the Charlie mention, Babs officially loses any right to ever judge anybody about responsibility or failure, ever. Either solve that now or never bring Charlie up again, I am totally serious, because it absolutely cripples the character. Er, no pun intended. -.- I'm already a little weary of the Steph-has-to-prove-herself-to-everyone thing. I'm more than weary, that shit was old before she died. On the other hand, though, if BQM's gonna work with the canon he's handed, there's really no other way for this series to start; sane, happy Babs was always short-tempered with competent, accepted Steph, so there's really no way that bitter regressive Red Lantern Babs could plausibly just immediately accept and mentor fail-y secret-keeping outsider Steph. The best we could reasonably hope for is for it to be a short arc that resolves and is done with before the series actually starts rolling. (Reply to this) (Thread)

I've read the crappy stuff that has been posted about her, as well as all the "Spoiler is Awesome" posts that were on the old scans_daily, and I just can't like her at all. 	Maybe Steph was brought back *specifically* to be the new Batgirl. I'm not sure what was planned when regarding BATMAN: RIP and canceling BIRDS OF PREY, ROBIN and NIGHTWING. Maybe it's because I don't know enough about Stephanie Brown, but how is it that she has a death wish? Or is this just another way of saying that Stephanie's so bad at doing good that it's practically suicidal for her to be Batgirl. In reflection, the issues of Stephanie's death-but-not-really aside, the fact that she screwed up so badly is one of the few believable incidents in the DCU that I can think of; rather, what I mean to say is that it's pretty damn surprising nobody else has had this kind of epic-scale blunder. It's a pretty easy thing to do given the line of work. Granted, the whole shoddy incident was dealt to Stephanie it seems in order to trash her character rather than build it, but because of that I think she has so much potential for future storytelling (assuming we don't keep coming back to this prove-herself thing). 	Heh, that's right Babs, show Steph that putting stairs between you won't change anything! LCS was sold out. Apparently they only ordered three copies because they're stupid, but they wanted me to look over my pull list while I was in anyway, so this shouldn't happen next month. (Reply to this)
