No True Pair - Master List for Round One
And that's it, guys -- posting is done!

213 works of art and fiction (including four that were too long to fit in single posts!)
in 103 fandoms and crossovers
...including 54 new pieces posted in free-for-all week, omg. (they're marked in the list with asterisks.)

Most prolific contributors:
35 - [info]shiegra
26 - [info]hyel (half art, half fic)
18 - [info]elanor_pam
17 - [info]ciceqi (including two of the double-post epics!)
16 - [info]cephy (I am so sorry for leaving you out this morning!)
12 - [info]chibirisuchan

goddamn, guys! you are all fabulous. When I have more time, I'll be going through the complete list of posts to try to pull together some stats on what prompts got used most often, and see if I can use that feedback to help make an even better set next time. I'd be interested to hear your input on that, too -- what kind of prompts feel the most inspiring to you? (People who didn't wind up posting, or didn't post much, I'd like your input here, also: what would have made you more likely to post? did your character list wind up not clicking? were the prompts too weird? did life just get in the way, as it tends to do?)

Thank you all so much for coming along with me on this challenge -- it's been more successful than I ever imagined, and a hell of a lot of fun. ♥

I'm one of the ones who didn't post nearly as much as I expected. I think my list made it a bit challenging - most of the crossovers required a lot of thought to figure out how to get them together. But for me it was mostly that I wound up distracted.

I ended up writing three of the prompts, and there were five more I intended to write, but four of them ended up getting turned into an original novel instead o.o;;; The fifth was the 'fighting crime' one, and while I had a grand time planning the universe, when it came to the actual story I never really got inspired too much. Not really sure why.

I'm curious to hear what the statistics were. For me, I found the ones were you only specified the title were the hardest to come up with an idea, especially since I'm sure the titles were meant to have some kind of significance, and they completely escaped me.

This was a really fantastic challenge and I would love to do something like it again! I could probably content myself for a very long time just doing something like this, trying out different character lists and different prompt lists.

I'm glad it gave you things to work with! I've had one or two other people say they got inspiration for original work out of it, too, which is cool even if it doesn't lead to more stories in the asylum itself. ^^

Statistics coming...maybe this weekend? ^^;

Just a quick comment from a frequent reader here: I really enjoyed looking at the different ways various people tackled the same prompt, and how the various characters shaped those responses. I'm looking forward to the next round.

Wow, what a month! Thank you so much for putting this together.

As a writer, crossover isn't my strength-- and yet the list of characters I made for myself was all about crossovers! So truly, if there's a reason I didn't write much this month, it was my own fault for overestimating myself on that. I quite enjoyed thinking about potential for most (if not all!) of my prompts, but in the end, only one story solidified enough to get written.

That said, though, I loved writing that one story, and I know the idea wouldn't have occurred to me without this challenge (and, the corollary: even if I had somehow come up with that idea, I'm not sure I'd have written it-- or posted it!-- without external prompting). Thanks. ♥

*nodnod* Crossovers are tricky, a lot of the time! There's so much translation work to do before you can even start letting the characters get to know each other.

I'm thinking before the next round I might make a "helpful hints for making a character list that plays to your strengths" post, once I can organize my ideas on it a little better. There were definitely some characters on my own lists that I didn't know what to do with once they got any prompts.

Holy crap, we rock. :falls...over...omg:

The crossover-fu worked really well for me. I didn't write a ton of things, but I also didn't have anything written before the weeks in question. And really, writing five things in a month is crazy productive for me, so I consider this 0tp SO a success. I found that there were just characters I'd picked who didn't ping me for anything, and that might have just been because they were ones I liked but didn't have a real hard-on for at the time. I find it amusing and somewhat symbolic that the characters that got the most play were a psycho assassin and a kitten.

As for what prompts worked, I think that a bunch of them worked for me: situations, tropes, titles, lines...it all depended on whether the pairing nabbed me, and then whether or not the prompt gave me a picture or a snip of dialogue or not. Which...doesn't really help, I know, but my muses, they are fickle. ^_^;; It's a fine line, between the totally vague prompts that don't grab folks, and the too-specific that you feel you're trying to shoehorn the characters into, and a few hit me that way in both areas, but that's par for the course, I think. Everyone (and their muses) are different.

but I thought that these worked out well! ^___________^

Yeah, I wound up with a few characters on my lists who probably shouldn't have been there, myself -- I might make a "things to consider when making your character lists" post before the next round.

*nodnod* Muses are fickle animals as a rule! Which is why I tried to make a variety of prompts -- different kinds of content, different moods, that sort of thing. I'm considering (because clearly I have no common sense) making multiple (possibly shorter) prompt lists next time, so that there can be more of that: a full set of kinks, a variety of lines or titles, etc etc.

Heh, yeah. I really never know who'll jump all over an idea, and I do admit that I put on a few folks who were kind of the new kids on the block as well as a few that were just old standbys that I LIKED the character and thought they'd be pretty versatile. Liking vs. writing, though, turned out to be the issue. :P

More choices is never a bad thing in writing, really. Maybe just...offering a lot of options for how the person wants to do it? I mean, maybe you could offer the challenge like you did here (which already gave a whopping amount of options), or maybe say, "OR, you could only have 6 characters, and double up the prompts so that for a given pairing, you'd have two prompts for a given week....or I suppose you could do it promptwise and say for a given prompt "1 and 6 (for the short listers) or also maybe 4 and 11 (for the long listers)". Which er...might be what you meant. It might get complicated for you to work out in an easy-to-understand fashion, but really...if you say, "this is v. v. v. low pressure, this is just a random idea generator, just go with what sounds good!", then I think folks'd be game. :)

Oh, man, this round was so much fun. Thank you!

I didn't get to post as much as I'd like. In the first couple of weeks, that was mostly due to time constraints. The past couple of weeks, I've been devoting most of my time to an original project because working on the prompts (ok, working with Kimberly) knocked loose my main character, and I don't want to lose the momentum.

I like the format and the prompts. If I were to do this round again, I'd go with two or three lists so I could potentially work with more of the prompts. Some of the character combinations in my list didn't fit well with some of the prompts, and some of the prompts offered up so many possibilities that I had a hard time picking what I wanted to write. (I think I have three different versions of my weapon kink entry.)

^_^ Thank you!

Also, yay for original projects! Kimberly's awfully helpful, once you catch his attention, isn't he? ^_^

I think I'm going to try to manage the numbers better for next round, so that each character on the list gets paired with a greater percentage of the others. (...and possibly make multiple prompt lists, because I have no sense of self-restraint.)

Self-restraint is, um, impossible when there's so much shiny?

Kimberly's awfully helpful, once you catch his attention, isn't he?

Heh. Yes he is, though I'm convinced such helpfulness is really yet another way for him to be uncooperative. He had the hurt/comfort prompt with Maria Ross, and really, it still needs an ending, but no, he had to hunker down and start talking soldiering with my main character's husband, and now she's making sparkley eyes at the two of them when she thinks nobody's looking. I can't complain, though, because I'm making sparkley eyes at the whole lot. It's been awhile since I've felt like doing more than worldbuild and sketch out basic plots.

And to maybe make this comment mildly helpful, when I was looking back over my prompts, there were a few I really wished featured a different pairing. I know the point is to work with what you're given, but could one of the free for all posting options be a "pick your perfect character combination for any prompt"?

Separating them how? Did you wind up with crossovers that weren't workable, or just characters who didn't have anything to say to each other?

unworkable crossovers, me realizing 'maybe I can't write these characters yet' (I need practice writing the Sandman stuff-I'd had ideas for stuff involving them, since they can be crossed into ANYTHING, but when it came to actually writing, well), and some really absurd pairing + prompt ones (they had stuff to say to each other, but I couldn't make the prompt work).

(Reply to this) (Parent)

[info]chibirisuchan

Oddly enough, I think I ended up in the opposite boat -- the prompts with characters from completely unrelated series were the easiest to find a focus-spark for, because some of the predictable ones/same-series ones either had too many possibilities for me to rope down in (abruptly and unexpectedly) limited time or else they'd already been written dozens of times over by fandom already. (The ones pairing up FF7 characters with each other in particular -- Seph and Zack and Riding Out The Storm, which fit them like it was made for them but could also apply to about four stories I've already written myself and I don't know how many dozens of others; same with Seph and the triplets and sex under the influence). So it was the really unexpected crossovers that gave me the easiest 'handles', so to speak.

I thought it was a very good mix of prompts. Some were vague enough to be flexible and others were specific enough to give me an idea of where to start when I didn't have a clue. Both options were nice.

I wound up writing at least three prompts where my initial thought was there is no way in hell to make this work, because then I got curious about how to do it. (I'm still sorry I didn't get around to Hermione and Yuuko: They Fight Crime! "One's a ruthless, hard drinking shopkeeper from a different time and place. Her partner's a strong willed intellectual witch on the run from a cult of evildoers.")

I really liked the prompt titles "Nothing Like the Sun" and "Edge of the Map" because they were both evocative of a specific mood but easily moldable to fit individual circumstances. And although I was stumped by "Hit the Ground Running," I was very impressed at everyone else's contributions.

In terms of what didn't work for me, the (music? poetry?) italic prompts were harder. For whatever reason, I just couldn't connect them to characters and plots. Of the italic options, the one I liked best was the end of the world, and I have to admit that's a pretty specific idea.

Anyway, I want to give an especial thanks to laylah who is obviously some kind of Awesome. This was cool and fun; I was very impressed by not just the quantity but the quality of the work people did. Mad props to absolutely everyone!

Following on from Hyel's "plan to finish anyway" idea -- is it OK if we post things here as we get 'em done, even if they're too late for the challenge itself? I know I'm going to do Aeris and Tohru in the same KH-Furuba-crossover universe as the Seph-and-Tohru and Zack-and-Tohru ones, for example...
