Prompt/challenge you're answering: Schroedinger/Ukano, captivity scenario
Author's notes: Ukano is held captive by his own mind, most nights.
A cat.
First day of the rainy season, his brain turning to Swiss cheese, too much noise, too much sound, too many smells, too much sensation, all Ukano wants to do is crawl into that concrete cave and hide before he goes any more to the crazy than he already is and he’s being held at bay by--
--a cat.
It hisses at him. Seems to fade a little, its tail oddly translucent, but that’s probably (maybe) a trick of the light and not his mind.
Fine. Fine, that’s okay. There are other nooks and crannies he can use to hide in until the rain passes, so it’s not that big a deal, in the end. Ukano turns to leave, but he’s stopped by—
--a cat.
…What?
It hisses again, takes a step toward him. Reflexively, he steps back, and again, until he realizes he’s let it back him even further from the abandoned construction, and by proxy, shelter, and down to the riverbank.
Cat hisses again. Ukano throws a stick at it. No luck. It’s still backing him toward the river, and this is ridiculous, it’s not even a quarter of his size, and here he is, trying to edge away from a hissing, apparently angry, half-there, half-not furball.
Right as he’s thinking this, the skies open up, and the first drops of rain hit his skin.
And
oh
god
and God and gods above his nerves are on fire—he’s sucking air into his lungs like a dying man, and the ragged sound that rips out of his throat doesn’t sound human anymore, but there’s too much too much too much
everything
attacking his system all at once; this is why he avoids the rain, why he avoids anything else, he can’t handle the sensory overload, can’t handle feeling everything all the time all at the same time and it
stops.
Just stops.
Ukano looks up. Cat’s gone. It’s still raining. But somehow, he can breathe again.
In the empty air beside him, he can hear purring.
And everything's okay.
