Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:complete, day 34, dean winchester, lizards, max guevara, sam winchester, shannon rutherford

-Who: Lizards and anyone!
-What: Lizards are swarming Mirage
-When: From morning to whenever the lizards are driven off/defeated
-Where: Location 5! The kitchen
-Rating: PG-13 for fighting
-Status: Incomplete

Another group of lizards were raiding the kitchens. For some reason, the refrigerators and freezers seemed to be stocked with food. The food was everywhere. Clearly, the mother lizards had never told their children not to play with their food because it was flying through the air as the lizards rooted around, looking for something that would suit their carnivorous diet and flinging what they weren't interested in over their shoulders without a care. Some were staring at their reflections in the mirror, not quite sure what to make of these new friends who were copying their exact movements. A few unlucky ones had discovered the silverware. At least three had already gotten stabbed from play fights that broke out as the lizards played out mock sword battles with the spoons, forks, knives, and even the sharp butcher knives. One lizard let out a scream of pain as another accidentally stabbed it in the hand with one of the knives. The other stared at its companion dumbfounded, not quite able to comprehend that it was his fault his friend had just been wounded.

(OOC: As the day goes on, more and more will appear. There will be about 200 total, so about four and a half for each person, including those who are staying inside, so those who are fighting will have more to take down.)

Here is a quick link to the map: Link)

Shannon took a deep breath and closed her journal. Moment of truth. She was going to meet Dean. As much as she hated it and would never admit it, her stomach was fluttering with nervous anticipation as she went to the bathroom and looked at her reflection in the mirror, touching up her makeup and fixing her hair. It didn't hurt to look her best, just in case, even if the point was just to eat lunch and meet her newfound friend.

When she was sufficiently satisfied with her appearance - and had changed her sandals to close-toed flats, even if she hadn't really wanted to - Shannon cracked open her bedroom door and peeked out into the hall. She wasn't sure whether she was disappointed or relieved when she didn't see anyone else out there.

Shannon's stomach growled and with another deep breath and a huffed exhale, it was decided. Time to go. Besides, she had to get there before Dean, anyway.

The walk wasn't very far, but when she got to the right building, she paused outside the entrance to the kitchen, hearing a commotion inside. Probably just some of the dumb kids running around and wreaking havoc just because their parents weren't around to tell them no. So in the mean time, Shannon paced nervously. What if Dean was nothing like the image she had in her head? Would her normally shallow outlook change the way she felt about him as a person? She liked to think not, but she'd only be trying to fool herself. Shannon knew how she worked. She knew better than to think that looks wouldn't matter. She also knew that the second she saw him, for better or worse, she'd be passing judgment based on his appearance. She hated it, but it was true.

"Oh, my God, come on," she muttered. She wasn't even entirely sure, herself, whether the sentiment was thought in Dean's direction or in that of the obnoxious sounds coming from the kitchen.

He heard the door slam one door over - well maybe it hadn't slammed but it had closed - and he momentarily wondered if that was her leaving. Could she have been right next door the entire time? That would be the biggest joke the planet had played yet if it were true. He shrugged and closed the laptop, tossing it lightly on one of the two beds before getting up. He'd promised her a head start so he pulled a fresh shirt from the drawer of his dresser, satisfied it was a simple black and nothing with a band logo. She was sure to dislike AC/DC and Iron Butterfly. He wasn't going to make that mistake right off the bat.

Not that he should be worrying what she thought about how he looked. They'd agreed... oh hell who was he kidding. There was a connection forming that he couldn't figure out completely and attraction was certainly part of it. Andy had called him whipped and he supposed he was because he made sure to give her a fair enough head start that she wouldn't possibly look over her shoulder and see him. He wanted that particular mystery to be solved when they had both arrived.

He left Lola in the closet. He didn't figure he'd need her so he didn't even bother opening the door to look at her. He set out then, approximately five minutes after she should have left. It was strangely quiet on the grounds. Everyone must be inside avoiding the lizards. Non-existent lizards. He saw nothing on his walk to the kitchen and he reached it in record time, having wandered there on more than one midnight snack run.

He was nearing the kitchen when he heard a distinctly female voice grumble, "Oh, my God, come on." He wasn't even late, in fact he was early. He raised his eyebrows and thought for a moment that he might just turn around and go back the way he'd come. He'd known a little bit of what he was getting into beforehand. And maybe it wasn't even Shannon.

So here it went. He turned the last corner and began down the hall. Which is when he both heard the racket coming from the kitchen and saw the blonde girl standing just outside. "What's going on in there?" he asked, still halfway down the hall from her. "The cook PMSing?"

Hearing a voice, Shannon stopped pacing and looked around. Her eyes rested on a guy who looked like he could be Dean's given age...but her heart sank a little at the prospect of that being Dean. He was...pretty... She couldn't help being disappointed.

"I don't know, I haven't gone in. I thought probably it was just some of the kids around here being stupid just because they could and I don't do kids, so..." she said with a shrug. "I was waiting for them to leave," she added.

She didn't want to ask if he was, indeed, Dean, because she didn't really want him to be. Instead, she shifted her weight slightly from one foot to the other and then looked over her shoulder toward the kitchen when there was a loud crash. "Oh, what the hell...?" she murmured, frowning in that direction.

Yes, that had to be Shannon and she hadn't lied about being very good looking. He smiled probably a bit too widely as he came closer and stopped beside her. She was looking annoyed and then was that disappointment? No, he had to have imagined that. He refused to go there just yet.

Dean chuckled at her reaction to the loud noises in the kitchen. It did sound exactly like kids running wild in there but he hadn't seen any kids since he'd gotten here. Which didn't necessarily mean there weren't any. They could be ghost children from another dimension for all he knew. This planet was insane.

Instead of introducing himself, that could wait, he stepped toward the kitchen. Determined to put an end to the commotion so that they could go in and get something to eat. "Don't worry, I'll see what the deal is and hurry them on. I'm supposed to be meeting someone in there myself."

With one hand he pulled the door cautiously open and stepped inside. He wasn't sure what was going on but things had been flying through the air and he didn't want to get hit in the head. What he saw was beyond what he'd expected. Huge, man-sized lizards were running around, in much the same way he'd expected to see children. They seemed harmless though so he cleared his throat.

Two seconds later he flew backward out the door and landed on his rear at Shannon's feet, having been backhanded by a raised ladle meant for another direction. "Uh..." he said up at her.

Shannon blinked and tried very hard not to frown when he said he was supposed to meet someone in the kitchen. This had to be Dean. Had to be. Why did he have to be a pretty boy? She'd really, really liked him and now...

He'd gone into the kitchen and more crashes ensued, but Shannon let out a yelp of surprise and stepped back when he came right back through the door, landing on his ass at her feet.

"Uh...what?" she asked, raising an eyebrow and feeling another all together different but equally as uncomfortable sink in the pit of her stomach. "Don't tell me. It's real...the lizard thing," she sighed. "They're just stupid lizards," she added, stepping around him and pushing the door of the kitchen open forcefully.

"Yes, it's real. But! Wait, don't-" he said in a low growl and sighed as she didn't even bother to listen or take him seriously.

He got to his feet as quickly as he could and tried to stop her opening the door but she'd already done it. And drawn a lot of attention to herself. He hadn't drawn any because none of them had noticed he'd been in there and the one that'd hit him hadn't thought anything of it apparently. They could have gone away very quietly but she'd just barreled in there.

Now, standing in the doorway behind Shannon he saw that they were all stopped with knives, forks, and various other utensils that normally were very benign in the real world but which now all looked like they were gleaming wickedly with evil intent. And every one of the lizards was looking directly at them.

Shannon heard Dean - she'd decided for sure it was him, even if he hadn't said yet - talking, but what was done was done.

And now she was face to face with a crapload of giant-sized lizards all holding random kitchen utensils, most of which were sharp. They stared back at her and her eyes widened as a few of them let out screeching sounds of protest at her entrance and chucked knives and spoons in her direction.

"Shit!" she shrieked and ducked, trying to scramble backward only to back right into Dean as utensils fell short or bounced off the doorjamb and one of the knives hit the door beside her hand with a thick and heavy thunk, sticking in the wood.

Dean caught her in the curl of his arm as she backed into him and propelled her away from the door into the hall as more nasty, slicing utensils were hurled in their direction. With both hands then he threw his weight against the door to the kitchen as several of the lizards lunged toward it, slamming hard but with no effect yet.

Putting the edge of his black, steel-toed work boot to the seam of the door, Dean turned toward Shannon, his expression both concerned and frustrated. "Now is not the time to freak out, Shannon," he said because he would have recognized her immediately from how she'd just charged into the kitchen practically rolling her eyes. "I can't hold them in there forever with just my toe and if I let go, they're coming after us. If they caught the smell of you they might track you even if you run away from me. So stick close while I think of a way to get us both out of here, ok?"

The blade of a large meat cleaver shot out between the crease in the door and the wall near Dean's face and he nearly let go of his hold on the door. "Shit!" he gasped. "I need a gun. Now!"

And the planet obliged. In his hand materialized a bright orange and yellow super soaker water gun. Dean looked upward. "What the hell is this?" he demanded. "I meant a real gun!"

Dean's movement was so smooth and fast that it hadn't really registered to Shannon fully what had happened until it was over and he was holding the door shut and telling her not to freak out.

He'd called her by her name; he knew it was her. Clearly she'd been right that it was him. Now, however, wasn't exactly an opportune moment to ask him what he thought. She nodded at him, wide-eyed. Yeah, Craphole Island had polar bears and smoke monsters, but man-sized lizards throwing kitchen utensils? What the hell was she supposed to make of that?!

"I'm not going anywhere alone if that's what they all look like. They can't just be in the kitchen, that's too easy," she breathed.

When the meat cleaver hit, Shannon jumped and screamed in surprise and, well, all right, fucking fear; that thing was inches from hacking into Dean's face, for Christ's sake. At least he was asking for a gun.

"Are you fucking kidding me?" she asked, dumbfounded. "Is that a goddamn water gun?! What the fuck, Mirage?!" she shrieked, panicking fully and without inhibition, now.

She heard another thump and the door behind Dean moved a little. No friggen way was she going to let those things out of there. The wood was thick and heavy; the first knife that had hit it had only been able to sink in as far as the tip, so she wasn't terribly worried about them slicing through the door.

Taking a deep breath, Shannon made her way hurriedly over to Dean and leaned up against the door beside him. "Now what?" she gasped.

Shannon felt only marginally safer when Dean wrapped an arm around her and she followed with awkward steps when he turned. She felt his breath against her ear and relaxed a little more even though his words were far from reassuring. "Yeah...no kidding," she breathed, still hiding her face.

When Dean spoke again and she gathered it wasn't to her, she finally looked up and around, relief washing over her when she saw that the golems had finally decided to make their appearance.

She looked up at Dean after she heard his whisper. "Okay," she whispered back, nodding. "What about you? You're coming, right...?"

Dean smiled down at her. He liked that she was concerned about him. He liked it a lot and he wished for the split second he had to think of it, that he didn't have to let her go so soon. But this was neither the time nor place for that. He was going to do whatever it took though so that he could have her back close again. And not just because she was scared either. That was for damn sure.

Then he leaned in close to her ear again, his lips moving in her hair as he whispered to her again. "Yes, I'm coming. Don't look back though. Don't do it, Shannon. Just run to the golems."

He straightened up again, brandishing the water gun at the surrounding lizards as the kitchen door groaned and screamed down the center behind them. "You guys ready for some dancing? I like the waltz myself. Here, I'll lead." He let his arm drop from Shannon and shouted, "Go!" as he swung into motion.

A second super soaker appeared in his free hand and he spun, working both guns at the same time in a semi-circle as the lizards rushed him all at once.

For a second, when Dean smiled back down at her, Shannon forgot her aversion to pretty guys. The issue she had with them, after all, was that they were wimps and cared more about their own looks than anything else, in her experience. Dean...was not a wimp. By any stretch of the word. She didn't have time, though, to feel guilty about having been so disappointed by his appearance, because he'd leaned in close again, whispering in her ear. If they weren't in such a shitty situation, she might've enjoyed the feel of his breath on her ear and the way his lips moving rustled her hair just slightly, but she didn't have time to consider it. All she knew was that she was glad that Dean was coming along and wasn't going to stick around trying to play the hero. People died that way.

Instead of looking back at him or vocally replying, Shannon just nodded to let him know she understood. And then, Dean was shouting at the things and she felt his arm drop away. She anticipated his command before he gave it and ran like hell. The golems were shorter than she was, so when she got up to them, she grabbed onto one's arm and let herself slide on the linoleum, the momentum carrying her both down and around until she was behind them and crouching, shaking, against their backs. She wanted to look back. She wanted to make sure he was okay, because the sound of the lizards rushing forward and hissing in anger and pain was thundering in her ears and Dean was right in the middle of it.

She remembered this feeling... This was how she felt when Sayid had gone with Charlie to find baby Aaron and the crazy French woman who'd taken him. Did that mean she cared about Dean already...? Closing her eyes and putting her hands over her ears to drown out the sounds, Shannon tried to calm herself, breathing deeply. She hoped Dean would be all right.

As soon as Shannon was safely behind the golems, Dean ducked down to his knees. Which is exactly when the door to the kitchen burst open. It would have looked like good timing but it was really a fluke. He'd meant to scramble between their legs and come out the other side running. Instead he was suddenly the stumbling block for a very large, hard lizard body as it fell over him on top of lizards rushing from the opposite direction.

Dean grunted and hollered as he was kicked in the head and the ribs by large, clawed feet. He hoped like hell that Shannon stayed behind the golems and didn't try to see what was happening. They all appeared to either be having a huge family reunion above him or they were seriously angry because they thought the other lizards had been holding them in the kitchen. He couldn't tell. He didn't care.

Covering his head with his arms, feeling claws like sharp knives knick away at them, he bowled through the mass of lizards as they bumbled over each other above him. Then as soon as he reached the other side of the horde, he got to his feet and dragged himself the distance to Shannon and the golems, slipping to the floor behind them with a thud and another grunt.

Shannon jumped and bit her tongue trying not to scream, instinctively scrambling away before opening her eyes to see that it was Dean who had dropped down beside her. Her heart felt like it had jumped into her throat. "Are you okay?" she gasped.

The lizards were still hissing and making a terrible commotion on the other side of the golems. She and Dean wouldn't be safe hiding back here a whole lot longer, the way she figured it. "Can we go now? Please?" she asked in a watery voice, swallowing thickly as she looked back at him.

As far as she was concerned, the sooner they made a run for it and got the hell out of there, the better, even if it meant they were cowards. She was pretty sure the lot of the lizards that had been in the halls were in the room with them, now, because there hadn't been that many of them in the first place. The bulk of them had been in the kitchen.

Dean's forearms were bleeding and he had a few miscellaneous bruises but he wasn't much more worse off for the wear. He rested on the ground, breathing heavily for a long moment without answering her. Then with a croak he said, "Yeah, fine. Just uh need a minute."

After a few more breaths he could suddenly hear all of the commotion in the room behind them. He also heard the tone in Shannon's voice and it sounded again a lot like she was about to go over the edge. He could have gotten up and gone another round or two with them but she shouldn't have to be so afraid when they could just run. And he wanted her safe more than he wanted the adrenaline rush anymore.

He hefted himself up on one elbow and looked up at her. "Yes, we can go now. I think they're in the middle of a family fued or something over there." He glanced over his shoulder with a groan and saw a couple of the lizards had picked up the super soakers he'd dropped and were spraying each other in the midst of howls of pain and anger.

"They're not real bright. Just uh send Tweedle Dee & Tweedle Dum over there as a distraction. It shouldn't be too difficult for us to just go now, Shannon."

Moving closer to him when she noticed blood, Shannon craned her neck to look. She was relieved to see that it didn't look like anything terribly serious. She was even more relieved when he said he was all right.

Her heart was beating so hard it felt like it might thump right out of her chest; she could feel it in her temples and hear it hammering in her ears. Leaning back against the golem, she tried again to calm herself with deep breaths. It was a little easier this time, now that Dean was back in sight.

At his words, she snuck a peak around the golem and sure enough, the lizards had started going at one another. Good. Fuck 'em. She hoped they killed each other with those stupid water guns.

"Okay," she agreed readily. Getting out of there sounded amazing and she was glad to hear he agreed. Giving one of the golems a nudge, she told it to keep the lizards at bay if needed and then looked back at Dean. "Where to?" she asked, thinking it was probably better if she had an idea of where they were going before they went, just in case - please don't let that happen... - she and Dean were separated.

Dean got to his feet and brushed off his clothes, smearing blood across his jeans as he did. He stood a little away from Shannon so that he didn't topple over on her. He was a little woozy on his feet from having taken a few dozen kicks to the head. He swayed slightly and gave her his most charming smile.

"Ok, let's hit the road. I think the golems can handle themselves and Sam and I can come back later and kick some ass. Or you know let someone else just deal with it."

If the planet had created the lizards it could damn well get rid of them itself as far as he was concerned. But he had had a good time before the rugby match part of the whole ordeal. He stumbled backward a few steps toward the bend in the hall leading toward the door to the building and smiled again at Shannon. "Are you comin-"

That was all he managed to get out before two scaly arms snatched him and yanked him backward so fast he flew off his feet.

There was something so familiar in Dean's expression as she'd touched his face that, even though she couldn't entirely decide what it was, it made her heart skip a beat.

"Sorry," she said softly, wrinkling her nose a little when he parroted her. He didn't seem upset, though; he was smiling. But she still could've overstepped her boundaries and he might not be letting on, not wanting to hurt her feelings. Friends, he'd said in the journals. He wanted to be very good friends. She'd have to keep her emotions, then, to herself. ...and avoid the hell out of Sam Tyler, for fear of projecting.

Smiling up at him, Shannon blushed again. "Yeah, well..." she said quietly, brushing the rest of her hair behind her other ear with one hand. "You're one hell of a guy, Dean. I'm glad you didn't leave me, too." Because, the way she saw it...he could've. From the minute she'd thrown the kitchen door open and caused the whole thing when the lizards had first spotted her, he could've left her to fend for herself. It had been her fault, really. But he hadn't. He'd stayed...and he'd protected her, just like he'd promised.

Friends. That was going to blow.

Was she blushing? As cute as that was to him he felt like he'd missed something. Something important. And suddenly her fidgeting with her hair took on an entirely new meaning for him. He began paying closer attention to everything she did, every expression. He had to be sure he wasn't losing his mind or still under the sedative she's so adeptly tossed at the lizards. He had a feeling he would be watching her for a long time even once he found what he was looking for in her face.

Yawning then, to make even lighter of everything, Dean stretched his arms slowly up into the air. "I couldn't leave you," he said mid-yawn. "I'm not built that way." He lowered his arms then, settling one lightly around her shoulders in a tenatively, friendly gesture.

"Besides," he teased, "you're too hot. The world needs you."

When Dean put an arm around her, he sealed it for her. He wasn't interested. There was something strictly platonic about the way he was touching her. And teased her.

The last thing the world needs is me, she thought but didn't say. What good was she most of the time? Yeah, today she'd helped Dean but even that had been selfish. If he'd been someone she couldn't care less about, he'd have been on his own completely and she'd have booked it the hell out of there. There was no way she'd have stuck around for just anybody out of the goodness of her heart and she knew it. Dean might have been built that way, as he said - which in and of itself was a bit of a crush to her ego, even if she'd never admit it - but Shannon sure as hell wasn't.

"Oh, I'm hot now?" she teased back, rather than let him see what she was thinking. She nudged him gently with her elbow, not wanting to hurt him. And with that gesture, up went the walls again. High, strong, and opaque. She was good at that and he'd be none the wiser. What he didn't know wouldn't hurt him and what she pretended didn't exist wouldn't hurt her, either.

And because he was paying close attention to her, he thought he felt a change in her before he saw something different in her eyes when she looked at him. Maybe he had gone too far in trying to convince her he wasn't going to be the jerk in the equation. He was definitely not like all the pretty boys or nice guys or tools. Well, yeah, sometimes he was a tool. But it was usually to cover up the fact that he was a softy under it all. No one who killed monsters for a living could have it known he was really a softy. Didn't happen. Really didn't happen in the Winchester family.

He immediately regretted putting his arm around her shoulder and almost withdrew it when she'd teased him back. He looked sharply at her and his brow furrowed.

"Hey..." he said quietly, looking into her face searchingly.

Shannon looked up at him and raised her eyebrows. "What...?" she asked, feigning confusion because it was easier that way.

Usually, Shannon could read men like a book. The way she saw it, for the most part, they were simple creatures. They operated in one of three ways: pervert, asshole, nice guy. Once in a while there'd be a combination of those, but more often than not, they fell into one category or the other. The problem now was that Shannon couldn't easily fit the Dean peg into any of those holes. Not even a combination one.

And the expression on his face was even worse, because it looked like he was trying to break down the walls she'd just carefully reconstructed around herself and Shannon didn't like that. What business did he have doing that, now? He could be her friend and not know everything, so where did he get off looking at her like that? She couldn't decide if she wanted to kiss him again or slap him across the face out of sheer frustration. Luckily for her, she was very good at looking neutral when she wanted to be.

Dean didn't bother hiding the hurt expression that passed across his features. Several days of building up to something that couldn't even withstand an intense confrontation with lizards and a self-conscious aftermath. It was all gone. She's pulled it away and he could see it in her eyes. She was looking at him like he was a complete stranger.

"Wow... just like that. All of it gone," he mumbled and let his arm slide away from her. "Whatever I did, Shannon, whatever it was? I didn't mean it. I'm sorry."

He stepped back from her and shook his head, more at himself than anything.

...and there went the comfort of the shell. She couldn't understand the look on his face, if only because it didn't make any sense, given that she thought he'd made it pretty clear that they were going to be the kind of friends that teased and chided one another and that was all.

Then his words...felt like a slap in the face. She felt the loss of his arm first and then when he stepped away, she couldn't even look at him. "Why do you even care...?" she murmured, suddenly finding the ground beneath her feet very interesting. "I thought we were just gonna be friends," she added, looking up at him again with effort.

She took a deep breath and looked away again, shaking her head and pinching the bridge of her nose. "Whatever, I let myself get in too deep, what else is new? It's not even you," she said more to herself than to him, dropping her hand away from her face again. "I saw more than there really is and that's my own fault. You'd think I'd learn," she added with a roll of her eyes directed at herself.

With a sigh, she looked back up at Dean. "You don't have to be sorry." Love means never having to say you're sorry, she thought to herself, even though the cinematic quote really didn't fit the situation at all.

I don't have to be sorry, but I am, he thought. Slowly the outer skin that was Dean Winchester was reforming over what had begun to open again. He guessed the fact that he was bruised and sleepy from the sedative bomb had allowed it to stay down much longer than she'd been able to keep hers lowered. It was like zipping back in to a comfortable sleeping bag. It would all be fine. It would all just fade into a bad memory. Or not even a memory at all.

He'd already made an effort to forget Cassie. The fact that Shannon had reminded him of Cassie had seemed like a good thing at the time. Because Cassie wouldn't have rejected him so brutally had the whole hunting thing never been an issue. Here with Shannon, she'd accepted his hunting. That was why her rejection stung more even though he'd known her less.

Dean sighed and turned his face up to the sun. He rubbed his stomach and stretched his back again. The fact that she had the nerve to say it wasn't even him was what hit home.

"I get the point." He struggled to keep his tongue under control and not say any of the hurtful things coming to his mind that he didn't mean. "I get it." He nodded and looked at her again. Lightly he touched her face in the way he had held back from doing early. "I saw it. Whatever you say now, I saw it."

He stepped back, shaking his head again and turned to walk away. As he walked, he said loud enough for her to hear, "And I'm not sorry I did."
