Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:complete, day 34, dean winchester, lizards, max guevara, sam winchester, shannon rutherford

-Who: Lizards and anyone!
-What: Lizards are swarming Mirage
-When: From morning to whenever the lizards are driven off/defeated
-Where: Location 5! The kitchen
-Rating: PG-13 for fighting
-Status: Incomplete

Another group of lizards were raiding the kitchens. For some reason, the refrigerators and freezers seemed to be stocked with food. The food was everywhere. Clearly, the mother lizards had never told their children not to play with their food because it was flying through the air as the lizards rooted around, looking for something that would suit their carnivorous diet and flinging what they weren't interested in over their shoulders without a care. Some were staring at their reflections in the mirror, not quite sure what to make of these new friends who were copying their exact movements. A few unlucky ones had discovered the silverware. At least three had already gotten stabbed from play fights that broke out as the lizards played out mock sword battles with the spoons, forks, knives, and even the sharp butcher knives. One lizard let out a scream of pain as another accidentally stabbed it in the hand with one of the knives. The other stared at its companion dumbfounded, not quite able to comprehend that it was his fault his friend had just been wounded.

(OOC: As the day goes on, more and more will appear. There will be about 200 total, so about four and a half for each person, including those who are staying inside, so those who are fighting will have more to take down.)

...and there went the comfort of the shell. She couldn't understand the look on his face, if only because it didn't make any sense, given that she thought he'd made it pretty clear that they were going to be the kind of friends that teased and chided one another and that was all.

Then his words...felt like a slap in the face. She felt the loss of his arm first and then when he stepped away, she couldn't even look at him. "Why do you even care...?" she murmured, suddenly finding the ground beneath her feet very interesting. "I thought we were just gonna be friends," she added, looking up at him again with effort.

She took a deep breath and looked away again, shaking her head and pinching the bridge of her nose. "Whatever, I let myself get in too deep, what else is new? It's not even you," she said more to herself than to him, dropping her hand away from her face again. "I saw more than there really is and that's my own fault. You'd think I'd learn," she added with a roll of her eyes directed at herself.

With a sigh, she looked back up at Dean. "You don't have to be sorry." Love means never having to say you're sorry, she thought to herself, even though the cinematic quote really didn't fit the situation at all.

I don't have to be sorry, but I am, he thought. Slowly the outer skin that was Dean Winchester was reforming over what had begun to open again. He guessed the fact that he was bruised and sleepy from the sedative bomb had allowed it to stay down much longer than she'd been able to keep hers lowered. It was like zipping back in to a comfortable sleeping bag. It would all be fine. It would all just fade into a bad memory. Or not even a memory at all.

He'd already made an effort to forget Cassie. The fact that Shannon had reminded him of Cassie had seemed like a good thing at the time. Because Cassie wouldn't have rejected him so brutally had the whole hunting thing never been an issue. Here with Shannon, she'd accepted his hunting. That was why her rejection stung more even though he'd known her less.

Dean sighed and turned his face up to the sun. He rubbed his stomach and stretched his back again. The fact that she had the nerve to say it wasn't even him was what hit home.

"I get the point." He struggled to keep his tongue under control and not say any of the hurtful things coming to his mind that he didn't mean. "I get it." He nodded and looked at her again. Lightly he touched her face in the way he had held back from doing early. "I saw it. Whatever you say now, I saw it."

He stepped back, shaking his head again and turned to walk away. As he walked, he said loud enough for her to hear, "And I'm not sorry I did."

Shannon closed her eyes and failed to keep herself from leaning into his touch, but before she could even enjoy it, it was gone again and he was walking away. Everybody walked away. Everybody left; everybody died. Why should Dean be any different?

Whether he misunderstood what she'd said or he was just bullshitting that he understood, Shannon didn't know. But this place was lonely and Dean had been understanding. He'd been fun. She'd opened herself up to him more than to anyone else and he was leaving her behind. ...and it was her fault. Again.

"Wait," she called out. "Dean, wait."

It wasn't something she'd ever done before, but she thought of the way she'd shut out Boone and the way she'd shut out Sayid and she didn't want to do it again. It was lonely being so closed off. So, she followed him, jogging to catch up. "Please wait?" she asked pathetically.

He heard her call to him and he stopped instantly in his tracks. He didn't turn around because he wouldn't have been able to conceal the expression of mixed emotion on his face at the sound of her asking him to wait. This was beginning to get a lot more complicated than he'd expected when he'd first set out this morning. Which made him almost laugh to think dealing with Shannon was more complicated than a lizard attack.

"You'd better keep your voice down," he said quietly. "Don't want any of those scaly bastards hearing you."

He turned to her then as she caught up to him. His cover was slipping again, he knew. He knew it was in his eyes when he looked at her and right now he was just too exhausted with the push and pull and lizards to care. She was going to get a dose of reality from him.

He held out his hand to her, palm up. "This? This was my promise. To protect you. I protected you from lizards. I protected you from me. But you know what? I'd rather touch you." And he hoped she understood the levels of what he'd meant by saying that. Because if she couldn't understand that he wanted her there the way she had been, even if friends was what that was, then this would never work. He couldn't pretend. Not with her.

When Dean stopped, Shannon's stomach flip-flopped nervously. He didn't turn around right away, only chastised her for being too loud. Which, she supposed, was fair, but she wasn't going to address it, because it wasn't, to her, that important right then.

Her breath hitched nervously when he turned and she looked back at him, seeing what she thought she was feeling reflected back at her in his eyes.

For a moment after Dean had spoken, she hesitated. She wasn't sure what to say to that. ...so, she didn't say anything. Shannon took the few steps necessary to bridge the gap between them, reached up to take the back of his neck gently in one hand and his jaw in the other, rose onto her toes and kissed him full on the mouth with every ounce of emotion she'd been trying to keep to herself. To take his words, she'd rather touch him, too. If she'd misunderstood, she was pretty sure he'd let her know.

Again she surprised him today. He wasn't sure if she'd completely understood what he'd been saying but she had at least gotten some of it. The part that was in her eyes told him enough to know that she wasn't completely cut off anymore. He had only a moment to register before she was kissing him. He was so stunned that it took him a moment to respond because a minute ago he could have sworn she wanted to hit him.

He returned her kiss with equal emotion and for once it felt that the two of them were clearly defined. Whatever happened when this kiss ended would be what it was supposed to be. So he let himself be in the moment, let her feel what he felt. His fingers trailing through her hair and then down her arms to the small of her back, pressing gently the way he had begun to earlier while they'd been under the table and he'd been too sleepy to control himself.

For a moment, Dean didn't do anything. He neither returned the kiss nor rejected it and Shannon very nearly pulled away to apologize when he finally reciprocated.

She felt his fingers in her hair and then down her arms, pressing against the small of her back. It hit her then. God, she was so stupid; so in her own head sometimes, it astounded her. He'd done that same thing back in the kitchen when she'd been laying on top of him, hiding under the table, her forehead against his. He'd felt it the whole time and she'd been too wrapped up in herself and what was going on at the time to notice. He'd been groggy from the sedatives, too tired to care about what was unfolding and probably only able to focus fully on one thing at the time. Her.

The negative side of the conversation had been a complete waste, because they'd been on the same page the whole time; she just hadn't seen it. Relief washed over her and she was so overwhelmed with emotion that part of her just wanted to cry. She forgot about Sam Tyler; forgot about Sayid, back on the Island, probably worried to death that the Others had snatched her up right from under his nose. She forgot about Boone, buried six feet under the sand with nothing left to speak for him other than two sticks tied together as a cross with his stupid necklace hanging from them. All that mattered right then in that moment was Dean.

Fleetingly, she thought she remembered people in the journals mourning the loss of people that the Planet had spit back out again and she knew that it was always possible that she or Dean would be next, but she couldn't think about that right now. Moving her hands away from him only to wrap her arms around him, Shannon pressed herself up against Dean and parted her lips to deepen the kiss. She'd stay there forever if she could, but since she knew, somewhere in the back of her mind that they were sitting ducks, now, for any lizards that might have escaped or were never in the kitchen to begin with, a few seconds after offering more to him, she pulled a hair's breadth away again. "We can't stay here...there's probably more," she whispered, not bothering to hide the disappointment in her own voice as she said it. "And for whatever it's worth..." she went on, tipping her chin up just slightly so that she could look him in the eye, "I don't want to be protected from you. And I don't want to fuck it up...not again."

He was a million miles away from everything. Nothing, not monsters, not his brother, not even Cassie was penetrating this. There was no comparison anymore. She was nothing remotely like anyone he'd ever come across. With a life full of demons and sleeping on the road he supposed the wasn't a huge shocker. What was shocking was his ability to control himself even now as she pressed closer and deepened the kiss. It wasn't his usual MO to simply kiss a girl. Not like this anyway.

His hands pulled her even closer to him even as they slid so that his arms completely enveloped her so that when she pulled away from the kiss she was still close. He felt the loss of her mouth but not the loss of her and that was exactly how he'd hoped it would play out. He wanted more of her but he also had just enough for that moment.

He rested his forehead against hers, his eyes closed as she spoke. "You're right," he replied in a low tone. "That sedative bomb can't last forever and I'm sure Eek and Ook won't hold the fort for us."

He opened his eyes and lifted his face to look at her, one hand moving to lightly caress her cheek. "I don't want to fuck it up again either. Just promise me something? Promise you won't put that wall up behind your eyes with me again? Whatever this is or becomes I don't think I could stand to see you look at me like that again."

Even though the lizards in the kitchen weren't necessarily the ones Shannon was worried about, she had to admit, Dean had a point. She just didn't really want to move. The way he'd moved to hold her lent her the idea that he didn't really want to, either.

He asked her to promise not to build the wall again. It was a promise she didn't want to make if only because she'd gotten so used to doing just that, that sometimes it just happened without her really even trying. But the way he was looking at her and the way he was touching her face, making her eyelashes flutter as she leaned into the touch made Shannon feel like the only other person in the whole world to him. That was enough for her to promise herself that she'd damn well try.

Nodding and giving him a small, tired smile, Shannon pressed her lips gently against his again chastely and looked back at him when she pulled away. "I promise," she breathed.

Shannon took a deep breath and dropped back down onto flat foot - she hadn't even really realized that she'd stayed on her toes that whole time - and rested her cheek on his chest as she looked back at the building now housing the probably completely sedated lizards. She let out a soft sigh. "You're not done with them, are you?" she asked although she was pretty sure she already knew the answer. She closed her eyes. As terrifying as the whole ordeal had been to her, it had been something entirely different for Dean. She'd seen it in his eyes. Dean had said that he hunted things that went bump in the night and Shannon supposed the lizards were the closest thing to that on the Planet so far. He wasn't done; he'd go back into the fray until they'd all been taken down. She hated the idea, but who the hell was she to tell him no?

As much as she didn't want to, Shannon pulled away from him entirely, because if she stayed there enveloped in his arms much longer, she'd never move...and they really needed to. "Where do we go now?" she asked, looking up at him.

He watched her think about his request. She wasn't bothering to mask her emotions any more which was probably the cherry on top for this entire day. And he knew it was no piece of cake to ask someone like either one of them to leave the walls down. He was finding it more difficult the longer he did it but he was for damn sure not going to do that to her after everything else that had just happened between them. So he bolstered himself and returned her chaste kiss with one of his own after she promised.

"I doubt that's going to be easy. For either of us. So I uh don't expect perfection. Just so you know..." he said quietly, rubbing her back gently as she rested her cheek against his chest.

"No, I'm not done with them. They can't be allowed to get free and terrorize other people. I have to find Sam and maybe some others to take them down." He kissed the top of her head and let his lips brush her hair as he added, "You don't have to worry about me. But I kinda like that you do."

Then she was moving away but it didn't feel retaliatory or angry so he smiled down at her. His eyes were tired and he blinked a few times before answering her. "Do you still want lunch? I think we might be able to rustle up something in one of rooms. It's probably safer in them since the planet imposes a no forced entry policy for everyone's room. Learned that the hard way..." he chuckled.

To say that she was grateful that the look in his eyes said that he completely understood her conundrum would've been an understatement. The fact that he'd even just said out loud that he knew it wasn't going to be easy and that he didn't expect it to be perfect helped immensely to relax her at the prospect of trying to keep herself open to someone for the first time in more years than she could remember. Probably since before Sabrina had forced her way into Shannon and her father's lives.

"That's good," she said with an airy huff of laughter, "because I definitely can't promise perfection. It's been a long time..." she admitted.

Dean confirmed that he wasn't finished with the lizards, but it was at least marginally comforting that he didn't plan on going at them alone. She just hoped Sam was as good as Dean was, because there were an awful lot of the damn things in the kitchen alone; there was no way Dean would be able to take them on by himself.

Tucking her hair behind her ears, Shannon gave him a smile that didn't entirely reach to overcome the worry in her eyes. "Just don't leave me," she said. "Just come back when you're done, that's all." Don't get yourself killed, went unsaid.

She let out a soft, airy laugh. "Yeah, I'm still kinda hungry," she admitted, looking back at him. She liked the idea of holing herself up in a room with Dean for something normal. The last bit of his statement made her curious, but she didn't ask. "My room or yours?" she asked, unable to stop the smirk at the unintended innuendo there from crossing her lips.

For a split second he could see straight into her. Or at least that was what it felt like when she asked him not to leave her. He knew what she meant and he knew enough about her past from what she'd told him to understand why she'd ask that. It all clicked into place and made sense. The conversation they'd had and why it had gone south so quickly. It had been his fault entirely but he really would have rather made a wrong move on the side of caution than gone balls out and become exactly the type of guy she hated. He knew he had it in him to be that kind of an ass. He was grateful now that she'd come after him and not let him leave just like everyone else had left her. That would have been the biggest regret he'd ever carry with him once it had hit.

In spite of the fact that he fully believed the planet wouldn't allow those beasts to kill any of the inhabitants, he still nodded to her and said, "I won't get myself killed. Not when it's just getting interesting." His smile was sincere then and he chuckled lightly, hoping she understood he was just trying to lighten the seriousness and ease her mind.

"How about my room? There are two beds because well it's like every hotel room I've called home on the road. That way you can rest if you wanted and not feel you had to..." he trailed off and kind of laughed at himself, running a hand up through the back of his hair in a nervous sort of way that was pretty unusual for him.

His reply, even though it probably shouldn't have, made her smile. That was the Dean she knew from the journals. Smart ass. At that thought, she even found herself laughing a little.

Blushing slightly at his suggestion, Shannon shook her head. "Not feel like I have to...what? Share?" she asked with a smirk. "I can't sleep on a bed, anyway; they're too soft. I'm so used to sand..." she admitted. "But your room, okay," she agreed, catching her bottom lip between her teeth as she grinned back at him. "Lead on."
