Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:complete, day 34, dean winchester, lizards, max guevara, sam winchester, shannon rutherford

-Who: Lizards and anyone!
-What: Lizards are swarming Mirage
-When: From morning to whenever the lizards are driven off/defeated
-Where: Location 5! The kitchen
-Rating: PG-13 for fighting
-Status: Incomplete

Another group of lizards were raiding the kitchens. For some reason, the refrigerators and freezers seemed to be stocked with food. The food was everywhere. Clearly, the mother lizards had never told their children not to play with their food because it was flying through the air as the lizards rooted around, looking for something that would suit their carnivorous diet and flinging what they weren't interested in over their shoulders without a care. Some were staring at their reflections in the mirror, not quite sure what to make of these new friends who were copying their exact movements. A few unlucky ones had discovered the silverware. At least three had already gotten stabbed from play fights that broke out as the lizards played out mock sword battles with the spoons, forks, knives, and even the sharp butcher knives. One lizard let out a scream of pain as another accidentally stabbed it in the hand with one of the knives. The other stared at its companion dumbfounded, not quite able to comprehend that it was his fault his friend had just been wounded.

(OOC: As the day goes on, more and more will appear. There will be about 200 total, so about four and a half for each person, including those who are staying inside, so those who are fighting will have more to take down.)

Shannon felt only marginally safer when Dean wrapped an arm around her and she followed with awkward steps when he turned. She felt his breath against her ear and relaxed a little more even though his words were far from reassuring. "Yeah...no kidding," she breathed, still hiding her face.

When Dean spoke again and she gathered it wasn't to her, she finally looked up and around, relief washing over her when she saw that the golems had finally decided to make their appearance.

She looked up at Dean after she heard his whisper. "Okay," she whispered back, nodding. "What about you? You're coming, right...?"

Dean smiled down at her. He liked that she was concerned about him. He liked it a lot and he wished for the split second he had to think of it, that he didn't have to let her go so soon. But this was neither the time nor place for that. He was going to do whatever it took though so that he could have her back close again. And not just because she was scared either. That was for damn sure.

Then he leaned in close to her ear again, his lips moving in her hair as he whispered to her again. "Yes, I'm coming. Don't look back though. Don't do it, Shannon. Just run to the golems."

He straightened up again, brandishing the water gun at the surrounding lizards as the kitchen door groaned and screamed down the center behind them. "You guys ready for some dancing? I like the waltz myself. Here, I'll lead." He let his arm drop from Shannon and shouted, "Go!" as he swung into motion.

A second super soaker appeared in his free hand and he spun, working both guns at the same time in a semi-circle as the lizards rushed him all at once.

For a second, when Dean smiled back down at her, Shannon forgot her aversion to pretty guys. The issue she had with them, after all, was that they were wimps and cared more about their own looks than anything else, in her experience. Dean...was not a wimp. By any stretch of the word. She didn't have time, though, to feel guilty about having been so disappointed by his appearance, because he'd leaned in close again, whispering in her ear. If they weren't in such a shitty situation, she might've enjoyed the feel of his breath on her ear and the way his lips moving rustled her hair just slightly, but she didn't have time to consider it. All she knew was that she was glad that Dean was coming along and wasn't going to stick around trying to play the hero. People died that way.

Instead of looking back at him or vocally replying, Shannon just nodded to let him know she understood. And then, Dean was shouting at the things and she felt his arm drop away. She anticipated his command before he gave it and ran like hell. The golems were shorter than she was, so when she got up to them, she grabbed onto one's arm and let herself slide on the linoleum, the momentum carrying her both down and around until she was behind them and crouching, shaking, against their backs. She wanted to look back. She wanted to make sure he was okay, because the sound of the lizards rushing forward and hissing in anger and pain was thundering in her ears and Dean was right in the middle of it.

She remembered this feeling... This was how she felt when Sayid had gone with Charlie to find baby Aaron and the crazy French woman who'd taken him. Did that mean she cared about Dean already...? Closing her eyes and putting her hands over her ears to drown out the sounds, Shannon tried to calm herself, breathing deeply. She hoped Dean would be all right.

As soon as Shannon was safely behind the golems, Dean ducked down to his knees. Which is exactly when the door to the kitchen burst open. It would have looked like good timing but it was really a fluke. He'd meant to scramble between their legs and come out the other side running. Instead he was suddenly the stumbling block for a very large, hard lizard body as it fell over him on top of lizards rushing from the opposite direction.

Dean grunted and hollered as he was kicked in the head and the ribs by large, clawed feet. He hoped like hell that Shannon stayed behind the golems and didn't try to see what was happening. They all appeared to either be having a huge family reunion above him or they were seriously angry because they thought the other lizards had been holding them in the kitchen. He couldn't tell. He didn't care.

Covering his head with his arms, feeling claws like sharp knives knick away at them, he bowled through the mass of lizards as they bumbled over each other above him. Then as soon as he reached the other side of the horde, he got to his feet and dragged himself the distance to Shannon and the golems, slipping to the floor behind them with a thud and another grunt.

Shannon jumped and bit her tongue trying not to scream, instinctively scrambling away before opening her eyes to see that it was Dean who had dropped down beside her. Her heart felt like it had jumped into her throat. "Are you okay?" she gasped.

The lizards were still hissing and making a terrible commotion on the other side of the golems. She and Dean wouldn't be safe hiding back here a whole lot longer, the way she figured it. "Can we go now? Please?" she asked in a watery voice, swallowing thickly as she looked back at him.

As far as she was concerned, the sooner they made a run for it and got the hell out of there, the better, even if it meant they were cowards. She was pretty sure the lot of the lizards that had been in the halls were in the room with them, now, because there hadn't been that many of them in the first place. The bulk of them had been in the kitchen.

Dean's forearms were bleeding and he had a few miscellaneous bruises but he wasn't much more worse off for the wear. He rested on the ground, breathing heavily for a long moment without answering her. Then with a croak he said, "Yeah, fine. Just uh need a minute."

After a few more breaths he could suddenly hear all of the commotion in the room behind them. He also heard the tone in Shannon's voice and it sounded again a lot like she was about to go over the edge. He could have gotten up and gone another round or two with them but she shouldn't have to be so afraid when they could just run. And he wanted her safe more than he wanted the adrenaline rush anymore.

He hefted himself up on one elbow and looked up at her. "Yes, we can go now. I think they're in the middle of a family fued or something over there." He glanced over his shoulder with a groan and saw a couple of the lizards had picked up the super soakers he'd dropped and were spraying each other in the midst of howls of pain and anger.

"They're not real bright. Just uh send Tweedle Dee & Tweedle Dum over there as a distraction. It shouldn't be too difficult for us to just go now, Shannon."

Moving closer to him when she noticed blood, Shannon craned her neck to look. She was relieved to see that it didn't look like anything terribly serious. She was even more relieved when he said he was all right.

Her heart was beating so hard it felt like it might thump right out of her chest; she could feel it in her temples and hear it hammering in her ears. Leaning back against the golem, she tried again to calm herself with deep breaths. It was a little easier this time, now that Dean was back in sight.

At his words, she snuck a peak around the golem and sure enough, the lizards had started going at one another. Good. Fuck 'em. She hoped they killed each other with those stupid water guns.

"Okay," she agreed readily. Getting out of there sounded amazing and she was glad to hear he agreed. Giving one of the golems a nudge, she told it to keep the lizards at bay if needed and then looked back at Dean. "Where to?" she asked, thinking it was probably better if she had an idea of where they were going before they went, just in case - please don't let that happen... - she and Dean were separated.

Dean got to his feet and brushed off his clothes, smearing blood across his jeans as he did. He stood a little away from Shannon so that he didn't topple over on her. He was a little woozy on his feet from having taken a few dozen kicks to the head. He swayed slightly and gave her his most charming smile.

"Ok, let's hit the road. I think the golems can handle themselves and Sam and I can come back later and kick some ass. Or you know let someone else just deal with it."

If the planet had created the lizards it could damn well get rid of them itself as far as he was concerned. But he had had a good time before the rugby match part of the whole ordeal. He stumbled backward a few steps toward the bend in the hall leading toward the door to the building and smiled again at Shannon. "Are you comin-"

That was all he managed to get out before two scaly arms snatched him and yanked him backward so fast he flew off his feet.

Shannon smiled weakly back at Dean, also climbing to her feet as she followed suit. She reached out and put a hand on his shoulder as he swayed, trying to steady him. Whatever the reason for the swaying was, she didn't think she wanted to know, so she didn't ask. "Let someone else deal with it," she said, looking him in the eye.

He stumbled back a few steps and then started the hall that would lead their way out. Shannon smiled a little back at him and took a few steps in the same direction as he asked if she was coming, only he was interrupted and he was yanked off his feet. It didn't take long for Shannon to notice why.

"Dean!" she shouted reflexively. "I need...I need..." she babbled, trying to think. "Something to put them to sleep!"

A small metal ball was suddenly in her hand. It looked like a grenade, but there was a label on it that she couldn't quite read because it was faded. Squinting, she turned the thing over in her hands and breathed a sigh of relief when the label on the back, the one with the directions, was clear. It operated, she thought after reading, like a smoke bomb, but the gas emitted was a heavy sedative. "Gimme a water pistol," she said clearly.

In her other hand, she found herself holding a small water gun. "I am so sick of your shit, you disgusting little fuck," she snapped, approaching the lizard that was holding Dean, brazen and for the first time, unafraid. She was too angry to be afraid. Feeling a little childish in spite of it all, she squirted at the lizard's back. Really...she was still only using a water pistol.

The lizard hissed angrily and writhed in pain, releasing Dean in favor of trying to block the water from itself with its hands.

"Get up!" she snapped at Dean as she raised the grenade and yanked the pin out with her teeth.

"Eat shit, motherfucker," she growled and tossed the already smoking grenade into the fray. Eyes locking on Dean, she started to back away. "Come on, hurry before that thing stuff gets to you; it's a tranquilizer," she said urgently.

Dean felt himself flop on the floor like a rag doll and he groaned again but this time he was half-laughing. He hadn't even had a chance to struggle before she was on the lizard like an angry mother bear. That was seriously something to see. She was surprising him left and right now and he found himself so insanely attracted to her as she said, "Eat shit, motherfucker," that he nearly pulled her to his level so he could kiss her.

But he was in no shape to do anything like that. His ribs were bruised and he was wheezing slightly from the pain as he got to his feet again.

"Holy hell, Shannon. What'd you do?" he said with a tinge of amusement in his tone as she threw the smoking grenade. Then he frowned. "Shit!" he breathed.

Behind her there were more lizards. Where the fuck where they all coming from? They hadn't quite seen Dean and Shannon yet but they would if she didn't get down. There was a large table pushed against one wall of the hallway they were in. In one move, Dean grabbed Shannon's hand, his other hand covering her mouth to prevent a scream of surprised. Then he pulled her into his chest and rolled them both under the table, shielding the brunt of the impact from her with his body as the cadre of lizards rounded the corner to where they'd been standing.

Shannon opened her mouth to reply to Dean almost indignantly - because...was that amusement in his voice when they were still in danger? - when he'd grabbed her hand and yanked her down toward him. Before she could scream, he was covering her mouth with one hand and instead of a scream, a muffled shout came out, although she forced herself to cut it off as he rolled the two of them under the table.

Her eyes were wide with surprise at first, but when the two of them came to a stop, she looked down at him and her eyes softened, searching his for a clue as to what the fuck he thought he was doing, considering the room was slowly filling with a thick smoke.

It vaguely registered that she was lying on top of him, but she was a little more interested in being able to communicate with him, so rather than think on it, she reached up and moved his hand from her mouth, dipping her head down so that their foreheads were together. She was too tired to hold her head up, now. "What the hell are you doing? We can't stay here. That stuff is a sedative; that smoke from the grenade. It'll knock us out," she whispered, her lips almost brushing against his as she did so. Even that didn't totally process, because she was too preoccupied with needing to get the hell out of there.

"If there'd been another way to avoid being seen by yet another group of those lizards I would have tried it." He felt himself beginning to get drowsy and the weight of her on his chest was fast becoming very comfortable. He pressed his fingers gently into the small of her back and smiled a bit blearily at her.

Then the sound of bodies falling, hitting the floor with thuds and what sounded like confused howls from the lizards who hadn't yet fallen under the sedation brought him back to the present and her all too intense expression.

He pushed her lightly from him and yawned in spite of himself. "Sedative might not be a good idea to try next time. Just saying," he murmured, peeking out from under the table cloth for feet passing where they were.

Dean just wanted to sleep then but he pointed outward, over Shannon's shoulder. "I think we can make the door if we go now," he said with a sleepy smile.

The gas was getting to Dean faster than it was to her, which, while frustrating, made sense since she'd been hiding and he'd been fighting. She lifted her forehead off his again and looked around, spotting the group of feet and letting out a soft huff of incredulity. "Jesus, where are they all coming from?!" she hissed.

She looked back at Dean in time to catch him yawning and she crawled off him carefully, keeping low. "I'm sorry, I didn't know what else to do...it was the first thing that came to mind," she breathed, giving him an apologetic look.

He was fading, now, and fast. She could see it in his eyes. "Okay, come on, then, let's go," she said, taking his hand and crawling out from under the table slowly, alert and looking around. That was when the sedative hit her, too. "Oh, shit..." she yawned, yanking on Dean's hand. "Hope you can crawl fast. The lower we stay, the less of that smoke we'll be in contact with, come on."

Pulling him along, Shannon crawled as far as she could until both their arms were fully extended and she couldn't go any further without him helping. She didn't want to leave him there, that was for sure, and she wouldn't. "Come on, we're really close to the hall, we can get to the door in, like, half a minute if we hurry," she encouraged, using her other hand to stifle another yawn. "As soon as we're outside, it'll clear our heads, I know it." She wasn't sure who she was trying to convince...Dean or herself.

He felt lightheaded and it made him chuckle to himself as he followed her out from under the table on his hands and knees. He tried not to breathe too deeply but he could see she was having the same trouble he was. Somewhere in a very fuzzily happy portion of his brain a joke sprang to life. He picked up his speed just enough to get shoulder to shoulder with her as they crawled.

"You wanted me on my knees. Here I am," he whispered and laughed himself right into a yawn. His eyes were watering now and his head was getting heavier but they were almost to the door. He pushed himself a bit harder so that he could get there and help her through.

His arms gave out just short of the door but with his head he was able to push it open just as Shannon came up beside him. The cool, clean air outside began to fill his lungs as he lay on his side with his head halfway out the door. It must have looked funny but he didn't care at this point.

Shannon let out a tired huff of laughter. "Makes two of us, honey," she joked weakly back as she crawled along beside him. It felt like forever before the door was in sight and all Shannon wanted to do was lay down and give up. She was so tired she could barely see straight, but Dean had pushed the door open and collapsed onto his side barely even outside the door.

With a grunt of displeasure and effort, Shannon pushed herself to get to her feet, grabbing the doorknob for support. They couldn't just stay there; the air would filter into the kitchen and benefit the lizards, which was the last goddamn thing they needed right then.

"Dean, please get up..." she pleaded, half-lidded with exhaustion as she used the door for leverage and made her way outside. "So we can...lock them in..." she added with effort, pausing to yawn in the middle of it.

She bent down and took Dean's hand again, shaking his arm and pulling on him. "A few more seconds. We're so there. Come on, tough guy," she goaded, letting go of his hand and taking a few stumbling steps out of the building before dropping down onto her bottom, Indian-style, and holding her head in her hands as it swam. She felt like she hadn't slept in days.

"You're very pretty when you're insistent," he smiled up at her with heavy-lashed eyes. She was shaking his arm though and that was going to wake him up before noon. Wait, that wasn't right. He forced himself to focus in on her face above him and the tactile sensation of her hand in his. Do it, Winchester, do it.

With a grunt of pain and sleepiness he turned on his side, pulling back his hand from her grasp. Then he shoved himself up to his feet with as much effort as he could muster. He yawned and stretched to get the blood flowing in his limbs again and then half-threw himself out the door into the fresh air.

"Oh man. Couldn't have done that without you," he said over his shoulder to her. He stretched again and winced at the pain in his ribs and forearms. That would be fun to deal with later. Now they had to figure out what to do next.

Shannon blushed in spite of herself at his comment once it really processed. He thought she was pretty. A small smile crossed her lips as her head started to clear a little now that she was outside the building. She didn't say anything, though, favoring watching as he made his way outside.

"You weren't so bad yourself, Winchester," she teased. "Shut the door?" she asked as she climbed back to her feet, swaying just slightly before regaining her balance and some, if not most, of her composure. He'd definitely gotten a harsher shot of the tranquilizer than she had. She, after all, had been prepared for its effects and had reacted accordingly by trying not to breathe too deeply. He'd been pretty clearly in pain; it would've been reflexive for him to do the opposite.

Slowly, she made her way back to him. "Thank you," she said softly, giving him a small, grateful smile as she looked back up at him from under her eyelashes.

He smiled at her compliment as he shut the door. He watched her sway but she had steadied herself before he had a chance to reach out to her to offer help. Which was fine because his head was making a very slow job of clearing though he was feeling a lot less sleepy than he had before.

She was near him again and as he breathed in the fresh air he could smell her once more. Her hair and her skin smelled very feminine and there was a salty smell of faded fear and sweat somewhere in there that was not unpleasant. He smiled even wider at her and pursed his lips together tightly.

"You make it very difficult on a guy to behave himself when you look at him that way. You know that, right? Of course you know that." He lifted his hands as though he might touch her face but instead he brushed a stray lizard scale from her hair and took a step back. Now that they were out of the thick of things he felt some sort of relief and disappointment from the whole thing.

"Sorry," she said sincerely, never taking her eyes off his even when he reached toward her, brushing something from her hair.

Looking back at him, she couldn't help feeling like kind of an asshole for having judged him based on his looks. She'd known she liked him as a person from the forever long journal commenting with him and she'd still let herself second guess it just because he was prettier than the guys she normally gravitated toward. She could swear, though, as she looked back at him, that he looked disappointed too. Licking her lips and looking over her shoulder, happy to see that the coast seemed clear back toward the resident buildings, she sighed softly. She should've known that would be a two-sided coin. Now that they were in the clear, he'd had a chance to really take her in. He was probably as disappointed now as she'd been when he first came into sight outside the kitchen door.

She looked back at him again. "So much for lunch, huh?" she asked with a roll of her eyes. "What do we do now...?"

He watched her lick her lips and wondered why she had chosen to start using calculated moves to try to get him going. She knew he'd promised not to hit on her and as much he wanted to pull her to him a third time, this time to kiss her for relief and for the pure want of seeing what it would be like... He wasn't going to do it. Especially not now that she wasn't playing fair anymore. Out of the moment of fear she must want to test his mettle. Why, he couldn't understand.

He tilted his head, eyes off to the side on a piece of grass near her shoe. Then he looked her straight in the eyes. "Hey, I'm glad you're ok. Nothing broken, right? Maybe we need a rain check or something on lunch. I need to get some neosporin on this shit." He indicated the scratches on his arms and the one he just noticed had grazed across his ribs beneath his left arm.

Shannon gave him a small smile, although she couldn't quite understand the look on his face. "I'm good, thanks." She paused and looked down when he mentioned needing Neosporin. Wincing slightly and pulling in a hiss of air. "Ouch..." she said softly, looking back up at him with concern and sympathy; almost apologetic, as if his injuries were her fault. In a way, they were, she supposed. "You want help?"

It was the least she could do, offering him some help cleaning out the gashes when he'd saved her life, basically. Granted, she'd done a little saving, herself, but mainly...she just didn't want to part ways with him, just yet.

Shannon pursed her lips, chewing on the bottom one slightly. "You're not what I was expecting," she admitted. "But you also proved my theory wrong..." she added, sounding a little ashamed for having had a theory at all. Her eyes searched his again. She was ready to throw away her preconceived notions about pretty boys, at least in his case.

In spite of the way he looked, which she found was rapidly growing on her, Shannon realized...she still really liked the guy.

"Oh these scratches? No, I'm fine. Don't worry about it. I've had much worse in my time. Are you bleeding anywhere?" he asked concernedly.

They had been so equal back there in that hallway with the lizards surrounding them. At least in his mind. There had been saving on both sides. She had taken some pretty gutsy leaps of faith, trusting him. She'd also been very able and fast on her feet. He had been very impressed. That's why this switch seemed like a low blow.

Still, she was offering to to help him patch himself up. It was sweet in a different way than he'd thought he'd appreciate. It was very feminine yet very strong. Mentally he rolled his eyes at himself. Get a grip, Winchester.

"You're not exactly what I was expecting either," he admitted. "Wait, what theory?" He raised a brow at her and looked interested. This should be good. He was ready to hear anything at this point.

"No, no," Shannon assured him, giving another weak smile. "I'm fine. Maybe a couple of bruises from getting grabbed and knocked around, but nothing serious. You were kind of amazing in there. Guess you meant it when you said you'd protect me," she added, blushing slightly and looking down again.

He'd put himself on the line so that she could be safe. It confused the hell out of her that he could have so much in common with Boone...and that she still was starting to harbor feelings for him that she'd never have had for Boone, no matter how badly she'd known he'd wanted her to. The things this guy was doing...without even trying. She swallowed back the lump in her throat when she realized that he was a little bit of Sayid and a little bit of Boone all rolled up in one. That thought hurt. A lot.

She looked back up at him when he asked what theory and she rolled her eyes at herself, shaking her head. "That pretty boys are nothing more than metrosexual wimps who only care about themselves," she replied honestly. She paused. "What were you expecting?" A playful smirk crossed her lips. "I mean, I said I was a hot blonde..." she teased.

He was glad to see she wasn't hurt more than a few small bruises. Some of what he saw must be from rolling around on the ground in dust shadowing her features as well. He wanted to brush away some of the darkness from her skin and he lifted his hand again. But again he let it fall away, this time without touching her.

She had something in her expression that made him think again about the feeling he'd been getting from her. The one that made him think she was playing games. He thought he could read pain behind her eyes. It caught him off guard.

He started to speak and then closed his mouth then opened it again. "Pretty boys? You'd consider me pretty?" He chuckled and shook his head, feeling more of the tension leave him.

"You? Well I wasn't expecting Laura Croft: Tomb Raider. Where did you learn to fight like that?"

Shannon had noticed the movement and wondered what he'd meant to do before he clearly stopped himself. She noticed a smudge of blood on his cheekbone. It didn't look like there was a cut there; more like a smear. As if he'd inadvertently transferred some of the blood from another cut to his face. Shannon didn't stop herself from reaching up and giving the smudge a gentle brush with her thumb, just to make sure. She'd been right that it wasn't a cut.

"Fight or flight," she said softly, ignoring his question about whether she considered him pretty.

She licked her lips again. "I didn't want to leave you, so I fought." She looked up into his eyes. After a short pause, she lifted herself onto tip-toes and pressed her lips to his fleetingly before dropping back down and giving him a ghost of a smile. "I know we said...you know...but, you saved my life. If you hadn't been there, Dean..." she said, letting her voice trail off as she tucked her hair behind one ear self-consciously. Maybe he'd be upset that she'd done that, but she couldn't help it.
