[At the entrance to Sector 5, several very long tables have been set up outside. Low light is provided by street lamps hung up just for the occasion, a cozy dining room in the middle of the street. There's turkey, mashed potatoes, candied yams, cranberry sauce, and many, many other Thanksgiving favorites. A warm, printed message at the center of the table asks:

[The image of Lacus smiles,] You are now entering the tutorial program. This will be a basic set of skills exercises to help make using the machine more natural.

To begin, we will adjust the settings of your virtual self. For example, [Lacus shimmers a little from the neck down, and now she is dressed in a long, flowing white gown where before it had been a blue sundress.] you can change your appearance by mentally picturing a new set of clothing or features. [Another shimmer, this time around her head, and her pink hair is now blonde!]

Please try this for yourself until you find it comfortable. You may find yourself changing clothes or appearance spontaneously as you use the program and your mood shifts; this is normal, and you should not be alarmed. A conscious thought to change your appearance as you desire it will be all it takes to fix the situation.

[Lacus smiles at Hikaru, her hair becoming pink once again.] I'm sure you will come up with some very nice outfits.

[The virtual image of Lacus applauds!] You look very handsome.

The second exercise is changing the environment. [Virtual!Lacus holds out a hand and beside her, a tree appears. A cherry blossom tree, to be precise, in full bloom, its canopy hanging overhead.] You can create anything you imagine, including animals or even people.

If you choose to connect with another helmet device, which will be the following exercise, both you and the other person in the simulation can control the environment. However, only you can control your individual appearance.

[Lacus points to her other side, and the tree and field vanish. Now, you're standing with her on a beach, the sand pure white and the ocean a deep blue, the sun warming you from above.]

Please think of yourself being anywhere you would like. It can be a place you remember, or a place you imagine. The device will fill in the blanks logically based on the overall environment, but if you want to adjust anything simply imagine the changes that you would like to see and the device will make them.

[Virtual!Lacus pauses her speech and smiles again,] I look forward to visiting many places with you!

[And then shifting back into admin mode:] Now that you have an idea how to manage the simulation, would you like to connect to another device? In order to have another inmate participate in your simulation, you must both agree to mutually connect. You may sever the connection at any time with a verbal command.

Other than pour tea for our pretty customers and serve them tea, cookies and cakes, we played games with them, and lent them an ear or a shoulder to cry on. Anything that would put a smile on the faces of our customers!

[He sets the plate down on the table.]

Our main game was the Guess Which Is Hikaru Game, where, as the name suggests, people were to guess which one is me! It was difficult, because Kaoru and I each wore a hat and shuffled ourselves around. A game wouldn't be fun without a challenge!
