250 - Fear Itself Mingle
[ Today is a day where most would be at risk of oversleeping. The dome lies dark like in the dead of night. The sun hasn’t risen today, streetlights casting a dull yellow glow and occasionally flickering out into nothing, only to spark back to life a moment later. There is no electric flicker from the kiosk. The Wardens are still. The wardens are silent.

The dome isn’t silent. There is a rustling of leaves, a snapping of twigs. Claws, scraping against concrete. The inhuman screech of an animal in peril, an animal hunting, an animal hunted. A screech that promises sharp claws and sharper teeth and blood.

The dome isn’t still either. There is something moving, thick as a shadow, tangible as a chill down your spine. Something that doesn’t belong here, something that snuck in when no one was looking. A boogeyman under the bed. A ghost in the closet. A will o’ the wisp, blinking in and out of existence under the flickering streetlights. Whatever it is it’s moving, leaving a trail of cold, dead fear wherever it passes. Something dark. A shadow so pitch black that it blots out the very lights in your heart, dragging your fears out screaming and kicking, reducing even the strongest, toughest man to a blubbering baby.

Perhaps best to stay in bed today, Marina. ]

Jack is not one to stay at home when there's something weird going on, and a lack of sunrise in the dome definitely qualifies. He left Ianto at home with strict orders to stay there (no sun means the vampires will be having a field day and he's not risking Spike getting at him again) and now he's patrolling, mainly in Sector Three, as that's his responsibility, but also heading out wherever he hears screams or sees raptors. He has his gun, and a limited supply of bullets – and his wriststrap and a torch for light when it gets pitch dark – and he's going to do his part to protect the people of the dome.

Except, of course, for that terrible moment when fear hits. Dropping into the kitchen department of Bull's Eye for a couple of the longest knives he could find had seemed like a good idea at the time, but now he's stuck, huddled against the shelves, shaking, and staring at an empty spot on the floor nearby.

((OOC: Feel free to bump into him wherever, or be in trouble for him to rescue, or message him, or whatever!))

Enter the hero on horseback. Mal gallops up holding the reins in one hand and a bloody pitchfork in the other.

The horse rears up when it sees catches the scent of both a raptor and the man staring at the ground. Mal easily dispatches the overgrown lizard and looks down at the other man.

"You in the coat? Snap outta it. You lookin' to die?"

Jack is so far gone that even the incongruity of the sound of horse's hooves inside a department store doesn't jog him out of it. At the sound of Mal's voice, he glances up blearily. He registers the still-twitching raptor nearby, but feels no sense of fear, not of that. How could the fear of being killed and eaten even make any kind of impact on the sight of Ianto's cold, dead body lying on the ground before him.

His gaze drops again, irrevocably drawn back to that terrible sight.

((OOC: Whee! Mal to the rescue – excellent choice! :-) ))

So much for that. Mal lets out a string of muttered curse words in Mandarin and looks around. From his vantage point, he can't see any danger, but those things could be anywhere. Oh well, hopefully they'd rather go for their dead comrade than the horse. Or him.

Mal dismounts and makes his way towards Jack. Except as he got closer, he started to feel something very, very wrong. He tried to put it out of his mind. The sudden feeling that the other shoe was about to drop. But it weren't easy. Each step made his heart beat just that much faster. And what was that out of the corner of his eye? There weren't Reavers here. Never Reavers.

He hefted his pitchfork just incase as he reached Jack. He looked down at him once more and then reached down to grab him by the collar. "I said snap out of it. Ain't nothin' there..." he assumed Jack was staring at something Mal couldn't see. "But there is more raptors, and I suspect Reavers." The feeling got worse the longer they were there. He made to drag Jack up by the collar and over to the horse.

The collar-grabbing got through to Jack, at least. He automatically put his arms up to fend off the hands trying to drag him away from Ianto. As if there was any point in anything now Ianto was gone.

"Get off! I'm not leaving him! Let them get me too; it's not like it'll stick!"

And it might give him a few minutes where he didn't have to be aware. Dying right now sounded like quite a good plan.

"For the love of Buddha! There ain't no one there!" To make a point, Mal walked right through the area Jack was staring. "No one."

He tried to slap the other man's hands out of the way to grab him again. "But yer fit and hale. An' if you refuse to come, I'll knock you out and drag you to safety. Yer choice."

OK. So maybe not a real hero... Honestly, Mal's getting really antsy just staying here. He keeps seeing something out of the corner of his eye. Something that's not a raptor. But he can't make heads or tails of it. Since when did they bring in Reavers?

Jack watched in horror as Mal stepped right onto Ianto’s torso – and his foot went straight through it, to the ground. His eyes went wide with shock. Shaking off Mal’s reaching hands with the strength of utter terror, he flung himself forward to scrabble at the Ianto’s body, and found to his shock that his own hands went right through it too!

“What the fuck is going on?” he cried, relief mixing with a new kind of fear – that of the unknown. He still wasn’t really taking in anything Mal was saying; the only thing that had got through was the sight of that foot sinking into Ianto’s apparently insubstantial body.

Mal clapped a hand over the other man's mouth as he cried out. "I don't know," he growled. "But I'm seeing reavers an' there's raptors in the store."

"Now if yer done hollerin' " He gently took his hand off the other man's mouth, "let's move out."

Somewhere, he thought he'd heard the term 'reavers' before, but his mind was so full of both specific and general terror that he couldn't place it. Just as he hadn't placed Mal's face yet, though that might partly be due to the fact that the last time he'd seen it it had been wearing a bonnet.

He fought the hand over his mouth automatically, but the struggling did at least move him a few inches away from the centre of the fear pocket. Brain feeling a tiny bit clearer, he could see the sense in not crying out to attract more raptors, and nodded, staying quiet when Mal removed his hand. He cast one more look back towards Ianto's lifeless body, the sight of which still filled him with terror even now he knew it wasn't real, and then said roughly, "Yeah, let's go."

Figuring the man would follow now, Mal stalked his way back to the horse, each step flooding him with more relief. The horse was nervous. "Woah girl. We're fine. Gunna be just shiny when it's all done," he murmured, patting the mare's snout. Mal stuck his foot into the stirrup and swung himself into the saddle before turning to Jack and holding out an arm.

"Ain't so easy to ride two, but a bit safer than you on foot."

Jack didn't point out that he had a gun and couldn't die. He was feeling a very strong desire to get out of the store and as far away from it as possible. The horse seemed like a sensible way of achieving that.

"Thanks, I appreciate it," he nodded, taking Mal's arm and, after a bit of effort, managing to climb up behind him.

Mal looks around for the best way out, then steering the horse in a wide circle around the fallen raptor, he starts making his way out. He walks her... always walking when possible. It's quieter. And easier to see. And keeps her from getting to worn out.

"Let me know if'n you see anythin,' he grunts back to Jack as he readjusts the pitchfork in his right hand.

Jack gradually sits up straighter as they leave the pool of fear behind and his mind clears. Away from it – and still within the bright lights of the store – the fear he’d felt seems ridiculous.

Except that a part of him deep inside knows it’s not ridiculous. Ianto could die at any time, and right now it’s even more likely. He’s been pushing that fear deep down inside him but he can’t deny it forever. Eventually he’s going to have to face it.

“Seems all quiet in here,” he says, dragging himself back to the present, and nods towards the doors, which they’re rapidly approaching. “Probably not so quiet out there.”

[ You rang?

As already stated, Spike was having a field day today. It's been a long while since he could let loose like this and although they're just stupid animals, breaking bones and ripping throats out never gets old. The darkness reminds him of the good old days when daylight actually meant something and the freedom this prolonged night has given him means he'll stay in game face for as long as he cares to. The night belongs to the hunter and bloody hell, is he ready to hunt. Who would know if one of the little prisoners went missing? Or two? Raptors. Definitely raptors.

Of course, things never really turn out the way he plans them out and, like a lightning bolt from a clear sky, the mood has changed. Gone is the chaotic fun, replaced by a bone-chilling fear and, after another few moments, a burn so white-hot that he's surprised to not actually be in flames. Clutching his chest he stumbles back until he hits a wall. ]

[And oh, how ironic that it's at precisely this moment that Jack rounds a corner and comes upon the sight of Spike staggering backwards, apparently in a great amount of pain.

He's been having a thoroughly crap day but that? That really is a sight for sore eyes.

He really ought to walk away, leave Spike there to sweat it out, but after everything Spike has put him through, it's far, far too tempting to get in a few jibes first. He can always walk away afterwards, can't he?]

Everything all right there, Spike? [Lightly, oh so cool, sauntering a couple of paces closer.]

[ With his back pressed against the wall his knees soon give in, resulting in him sinking down to sit on the ground somewhat bonelessly. He tilts his head up to glare at Jack. ]

Piss off. [ Aggressive maybe but there's no mistaking the fear that lingers just under the surface, forcing his voice into something tense and trembling. ]

[He'd meant to taunt, but there's something about the way Spike collapses in on himself, and the tremor in his voice, that gets to him.

He takes a step closer, though he knows about the fear pockets now so he's careful not to get too close.]

Staying there's only going to make it worse, you know.

[Whatever it is. He can't even imagine what would make a century-old vampire look like that.]

What part of piss off didn't you get?!

[Jack begins to realise that perhaps he can not only piss Spike off but also save him as well, and wouldn't that be a fantastic outcome? He looks down at Spike pityingly, not moving – except to a firmer stance, folding his arms across his chest.]

You sure you really want me to 'piss off' and leave you all alone with whatever the hell it is you're experiencing there, Spike?

I don't want your help, Jackie-boy. [ Definitely strained, though he does manage to lift his head and deliver a venomous glare. His hand is still fisted in the front of his shirt, perhaps subconsciously by now. ]

Maybe not, but I'm here now so you're stuck with me.

[And there definitely is a certain sense of satisfaction in being able to play the hero here. He nods down towards Spike's chest and the white-knuckled grip he has on his shirt.]

What's that all about, Spike? Your undead heart started beating again or something?

[ If he could untangle his fingers he would, but there's no such luck. Even less so with biting back the pained response. ]

Burns... [ With white-hot fury and the longer he stays the more he begins to understand what it must've been like in Dru's head all the time. Not quite knowing what's going on and definitely not knowing how to get out of it, it might just drive him momentarily mad.

He snarls, as if trying to shake off the moment of weakness. No truths being spilled here, oh no. ]

Shouldn't you be keepin' an eye on your boy?

[Burns. Interesting, though he doesn't have enough to go on to put two and two together yet.]

My boy is safe and sound at home, so don't go worrying about him. Seems like you should worry about you, more! You want to stay there all day hurting, or d'you want me to come and get you out?

[Which he guesses is easier said than done. He can already feel the tendrils of unreasonable fear reaching out to him, trying to wrap around him.

Being stood here talking to Spike, who threatened to bring about the exact same thing he turned out to be most afraid of earlier, isn't exactly helping.]

[ He moves stubbornly, boots scraping against the pavement as he tries to push himself up and away but it's like being piss drunk. No luck. He'd really rather not ask Jack of all people for help but this is bordering on unbearable and waiting for the other shoe to drop — for the guilt to come flooding, like it did for Angelus — is only marginally worse than giving in.

So he does give in, with a grunt and a nod. Okay. Come help. ]

[Jack is, honestly, surprised at the acquiescence, but he's not going to waste time worrying about it. He can hear sounds of scrabbling in the dark from several different directions and he really doesn't fancy being stuck paralysed with fear when the raptors get there. So he nods briskly and heads in towards Spike.

The fear hits him about two steps in, a formless dread that seems to seep into his body through his skin. He grits his teeth and keeps going, even if it feels increasingly like walking through treacle.]
