The Case Of The Disappearing Jedi In The Land Of Attachments
Who: Obi-Wan Kenobi, Siri Tachi and Anakin Skywalker
What: Anakin has taught Siri to silence her presence in the Force. Unfortunately nobody has told Obi-Wan that this can be done.
When: Tuesday, August 13, approx 2am.
Where: Obi-Wan's room, Siri's room and all over the place.
Rating/Warnings: PG with Jedi angst and inappropriate attachments
Status: Closed; Incomplete

Obi-Wan woke suddenly, sitting bolt upright, Siri's name on his lips before he consciously realized what his deeper subconscious had felt in the Force. Siri was gone. He frowned, closing his eyes again to reach out, intentionally looking for her presence in the Force, but it wasn't there. He got out of bed. He didn't even bother pulling on a housecoat or boots over his pyjamas. He went out into the hall, to her room, and banged on the door. When no answer came, he used the Force to push it open, stepping inside with a franticness that was barely hidden under his mildly uneasy exterior. She wasn't there.

Feeling extremely agitated at that point, he hurried out of Siri's room and headed for Anakin's. He banged on the door without any regard for the hour. He'd probably wake Padme, it occurred to him after he'd done it, but it also occurred to him that she'd survive.

Anakin, he projected forcefully. Come out here.

Anakin and Padmé were both fast asleep – because that’s what people normally did at night. And he was not so connected to Siri that her popping out of detection caused him to snap awake. He was ready to sleep through the night if nothing as demanding as a droid army invasion showed up.

But Obi-Wan’s very loud and forceful projection jolted Anakin like an electrical current. He almost jumped out of bed before he was fully awake.

Heart pounding, he reached for his lightsaber on his bedside stand and held up his hand cautiously to Padmé, “It’s Obi-Wan.” Though, that could mean any number of dangerous things were about to descend upon them. He didn’t pause to throw on a shirt, he tread on bare feet in his pajama pants alone; when it came to a battle, a layer of cotton wasn’t going to give him all that much more protection. As he approached the door he reached out with the Force, for a warning, so he wasn’t walking blind into a trap…

And felt nothing out of the ordinary.

By the time he opened the door, he was more confused than concerned. “Obi-Wan? Why are you waking me up? What’s going on?”

It was another night of nightmare-interrupted sleep, and Siri had spent a few frustrated moments attempting meditation before she decided that she needed to do something... else. Anakin had been training her to silence her presence in the Force; perhaps she should try putting what she had learned into practice.

Not bothering to change out of the loose cotton pants and tank top she was sleeping in, she pulled on a pair of shoes before leaving her room. She could have done it there... but she wanted fresh air. Open spaces.

So she went to the lake. It had become one of her favourite places since her arrival. And she’d been spending a sizeable amount of time there. Swimming, and meditating. There was an outcropping of rock overlooking the lake that she was quite fond of. Siri seated herself on the edge of, legs folded as though it was one of the many meditation exercises they’d taught at the Temple. Closing her eyes, she used what Anakin had taught her...

And she silenced her presence in the Force. Completely. If she had thought about it, she might have told Obi-Wan what she was learning, what Anakin was teaching her. But it just hadn’t occurred to her that it was needed.

“It feels empty, like they don’t exist anymore,” Anakin answered with only a moment’s pause. Obi-Wan’s barely contained anxiety made sense now. Siri wasn’t there. And though Anakin was teaching her how to cut her presence off from the Force, that was not where his mind went. It was 2 am in the morning, about the same time Obi-Wan left the first time.

And Obi-Wan was so emotionally loud.

“Have her things vanished? Have you tried calling her on the phone?” Those were to the two last verifications that someone was truly gone.

Things? It was weird to think of her as having... things. He hadn't exactly looked in her closet when he checked her rooms. Why would he? He shook his head, watching Anakin closely, like a drowning man watches a life preserver floating closer.

"I didn't look in the closet. If her clothes are still there... that means she's still here? She bought them here. They'd still vanish if she did?"

Oh Master. All his sympathy went towards the man.

“Come in,” Anakin said, and because he was sure Obi-Wan would just stand there, doing his best to look utterly lost, if he didn’t direct him to the couch, he grabbed the man’s shoulder and pulled him in.

“Sit.” He had a feeling short, to the point sentences would reach Obi-Wan the most. “Stay.” He left him there for just a moment while he retrieved his phone.

	"I'm not a mooka," Obi-Wan pointed out, but his tone was distracted, his heart wasn't in the argument, and he sat while he said it. He closed his eyes again as Anakin left the room, looking for her - again - in the Force. Nothing. Not even a whisper. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Anakin moved back to his and Padmé’ bedroom and quietly removed his phone. He waited until he was back in the living room to dial Siri’s number. The phone rang and he watched Obi-Wan, knowing exactly what the man was going through, even if Obi-Wan didn’t want to admit to the attachments that were at the root of his pain.

The phone rang, and then, instead of the message saying the number was no longer in service, Anakin got Siri’s voice message. He gave the phone the most curious look, then tried again. Same result. But there was that little matter of not being able to feel her in the Force…

“Oh.” It dawned on him what could be happening. On the plus side Obi-Wan wouldn’t be feeling the pain of loss anymore. But there was some explaining to do. “She’s still here, Master.”

Hope fluttered at his heart briefly - Anakin wasn't being deceitful - when the words came out of his former Padawan's mouth, but it stilled again as the indisputable fact of the matter reasserted itself.

"But she's not. I can't feel her. Not at all, Anakin. People don't disappear from the Force if they're unconscious. Only if they're..." Dead. Unless she was removed from this place, the only way she would vanish in the Force was death. He looked at Anakin grimly. "What are you saying?"

True, there was a possibility she was dead. If you died here, wouldn’t your things remain?

He hoped it wasn’t that. But part of him wasn’t looking forward to telling Obi-Wan about what he was teaching Siri. If his hunch was correct, why hadn’t Siri mentioned it to Obi-Wan? Anakin had a feeling he was about to experience some kind of backlash.

“I think she’s just practicing what I’ve been teaching her. How to silence her presence in the Force.”

	The how and the why could be answered later, Anakin decided. They were mere tiny details. “She asked, we started before the body mix-up ordeal. But couldn’t continue until after. You said she wasn’t in her rooms?” Anakin figured the next step should be to find Siri, to prove to Obi-Wan she wasn’t actually gone. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

"She's not in her rooms!" Obi-Wan snapped. "I still have eyes."

He didn't even know what to make of this development. They were sneaking around behind his back learning bizarre Force techniques that seemed... frightening in what they implied. "Why would she ask you to teach her that?" Never mind how she even knew he could. "The only Force sensitives here are you and I."

	“I was only confirming what you said! You’ll have to ask her why she wanted to know!” Anakin snapped back, then felt instant regret because he wasn’t trying to wake Padmé. 	Oh Master, why do you have this infinite sadness complex? “She never mentioned she wanted to learn how to do this specifically to hide from you. Anakin didn’t give any thought to shoes either. Just going down to the lake wouldn’t bring them into the path of danger to the soles of their feet. Other than twigs or unseen sharp stones.

He ushered his former Master out of his rooms and down the corridor.

“I really don’t think she was doing this to get away from you, Master,” Anakin tried again as they walked. Obi-Wan seemed to be wallowing in the stickier emotions – and Anakin knew just how consuming they could be.

He wouldn't call it wallowing; Siri seeking out this skill made no logical sense unless there was a reason she wanted to be able to hide her presence. And if they couldn't sense her, could she sense...anything? It was a little too uncomfortably close to being Forceless for his taste, as he'd has a sample of that once already.

"When we find her, I expect we'll find out."

“Yes… I’m sure we will.” Because I doubt you won’t ask her. “But I’m fairly certain it’s not because-” Anakin saw his former Master was stubbornly set to assume the worst here. “Never mind.”

They reached a set of stairs now.

“It’s not a permanent state of being, just so you know. She’s not stuck like this. Both Ani and I know how to do it.”

Oh, they were stopping now. Anakin was ahead of Obi-Wan on the stairs, and therefore lower, when the other Jedi decided to make a stand, as it were.

Anakin didn’t appreciate being yelled at, at this hour, for things that weren’t wrong, or his fault. He scowled back.

“Over a year ago one of my future apprentices showed up here. I won’t…” Anakin struggled to find the right way to say he would kill Galen’s father in front of him, raise him under extreme abuse and teach him nothing but hatred and the Dark Side. “I won’t be kind to him, because that’s what Sith do. But he was from a time when he had already turned on me and was determined to kill me. It didn’t matter to him that neither I nor Ani weren’t Vader, just feeling us there in the Force drove him mad. This was the compromise so we could all coexist on the same planet without him trying to constantly kill us. But… Galen isn’t here anymore and we haven’t had a need to use this ability since.”
