Who: Any students eligible to go, also any Professors and Aurors can feel free to have been ordered to patrol to protect the kiddies on this day.
What: Hogsmeade Visit
Where: Hogsmeade
When: Saturday
Warnings: Varied!

The not so newly appointed Headmistress of Hogwarts checked the last name off on her parchment list and dropped her hands to her side, watching with a stern but mildly worried expression as the stragglers loped off in the direction of the Village.

"Is this a good idea?" She asked, not looking away from the quickly moving backs of the students and thus giving the professor standing beside her no indication that they were being spoken to directly. Nevertheless, Minerva had a way of speaking that meant whether the question were meant for you or no, you felt responsible for answering it.

"I did not foresee any dire events on this day, Headmistress...." Professor Trelawney intoned, her thick and dreamy voice somewhat questioning, not certain that the question had an answer at all, and certainly not sure that she had found it.

It did manage to snap the Headmistress out of whatever thoughts had kept her standing still, however. McGonagall's mouth drew into an even tighter, sterner line and she sent the quill and parchment flying back to her office and started, herself, down the road toward Hogsmeade Village. As she adjusted her large hat, words carried on the wind that might have sounded a bit like, "Of course you didn't, barmy bat."

Professor Trelawney, fortunately, did not hear.

"Oh..." Drew said again, softer, thoughtfully. The brief pang of humiliation, stupidity and disappoinment that he felt was covered up and it wasn't visible on his face. He gave Dean a slightly self-effacing smile and sipped at his butter beer. "Well... thanks for being honest with me. And hey, you really don't have to hang out with me now you're here, you're not like, obliged to or anything. It's cool if you have other places you'd rather be." And he was being sincere.

The little pants of humiliation might be covered, but Drew didn't have the wide, beaming smile he'd had a minute ago, which was enough to make it obvious he wasn't happy. "No - I didn't mean I wanted to take off, really. We can hang out and have a butterbeer and chat still, yeah? Unless you want me to go. It's not like it's a bad thing - I'm flattered and all, really. I just didn't want to be a jerk and not tell you straight off. I thought it was a git sort of thing to say in journals when I'd already said yes, though. I figured face to face was better."

God, this was awkward. Worse than his first actual date, now that he thought of it. Dean felt really bloody guilty. He pulled the little snitch box back out of his pocket, holding it out to Drew. "You want this back though? It's all right if you do."

Drew played with his glass, running his finger round the rim, but he shook his head as Dean tried to offer the glass back, smiling again, even if it was still less than it had been. "No, I bought it for you and it'd be cool if you kept it." he put his chin in his hand and gave Dean a somewhat wistful look. "Thanks for not freaking out. I've got time to sit and chat if you still wanted to."

Dean sort of wanted to bang his head on the table. That wistful look made him feel like a jerk. But he hadn't meant to be! Really.

"Thanks," he answered, playing with the little snitch box for a moment before slipping it away again. He smiled quickly, shaking his head. "I wouldn't freak out. Like I said, flattering yeah? I'm just sorry that I got it twisted up." Dean was actually a bit curious, and wanted to ask Drew if he asked out blokes all the time. He was so matter of fact about it, Dean just hadn't run into that much. He wondered if Drew liked ONLY boys, too. But he wasn't going to harp or ask about it. It seemed rude.

"So you're playing reserves this year, right? Hufflepuff's got a good team, but you'll probably get a bit of play time at least. What are you flying?" Quidditch chitchat was innocuous. Plus Dean remembered Drew had been really excited about making reserves, so he might like to talk about it.

Drew shrugged to Dean's explanation, but it was one that said that the misunderstanding didn't matter and that he knew that Dean was sincere with his apology. "It's okay."

And then the conversation moved on and Drew found himself to be a little more enthusiastic, although he still caught himself studying the line of Dean's shoulder and the balance of his wrists.

Completely covertly of course, it wasn't as if he was perving, it was just appreciation. Dean was nice but he was also hot and Drew's crush was just that, and apparently not ebbing away soon. "Oh yeah! I'm reserved but I don't reckon I'll get to play, the rest of the guys are way too good, I don't know how I managed to get on the reserves but it's cool, I think I'll prolly be a Chaser, cause I don't reckon I've got the build for a Beater, whatcha reckon?" he babbled.

Dean didn't really notice the covert looks. He didn't usually notice them from girls, either, unless they were obvious enough that he couldn't miss them, so the general lack of awareness likely helped Drew's attempts to stay unseen about in his peeking.

"I don't know, if Hufflepuff pulls ahead in a match, your Captain might play the reserves to give them some experience. Or if someone is injured."

Dean cocked his head. "You're light enough to Seek, if they need it. But probably a Chaser. Don't really envy you flying under Smith as a Captain though. Give him a kick if he's too much of a prat." Smith wasn't a bad guy, Dean thought. But he could get his head stuck up his arse, now and then.

"You think I could Seek?!" Drew asked, surprised. And looking surprised. And even more ridiculous with that baby-bird head of luminous hair. "Wow, they said I'm too easily distracted to Seek." he grinned, seeming pleased at Dean's assessment. "Oh, yeah... he's not, he's not sooooo bad...." Drew said, sounding a lot like someone who didn't want to say something bad about another person... no matter how true the comment had been. "Do you wanna do Quidditch when you leave Hogwarts?" he asked, curious.

Dean chuckled. "Why not? It's a good job for someone who gets distracted, maybe? Bright shiny gold thing to catch your eye? If you've got the reflexes for it." Dean hadn't really seen Drew fly, so he couldn't say. But he was light and if he was good enough to make reserves, probably wasn't any reason he could fly as Seeker, even if he might be better in a Chaser slot.

Dean heard the way he hedged and laughed. "It's all right. He's a prat, but he's not bad. I didn't mean it against him, really," he reassured Drew.

He sat back in the chair, taking a swig of the butterbeer before answering. "Nah, I'm not good enough to fly for the pros. Not really sure what I'll do out of school. Probably just find a job somewhere and suss it out then. You planning to try to play when you leave school?"

"Ooooh, yeah..." Drew thought about that one. He'd never really be interested in a Seeker's position because everyone had always told him he was more suited for Chasing, but he just might like to try. Maybe he should get himself one of those glowing snitches?

He bit his lip hearing Dean's laugh though, finding it adorable and attractive at the same time, but he didn't say anything.

"I don't think so." he said, making a face. "I couldn't even get into the team. Nah, I'm not sure what I wanna do when I grow up. I wanna either write like Rita Skeeter, only better, or be a Mediwizard!"

"Skeeter?" Huh. Dean wouldn't have figured that. "You'd do a better job, I bet. I mean if you told the truth even one out of ten times you'd be a step up on Skeeter." Of course then they might not sell as many papers. Muggle and Wizarding news weren't that different from what Dean knew - both of them played things up to sell papers or get people watching the news and whatnot. The Wizarding world was just smaller - and Dean knew the people they were talking about, sometimes. So it was more personal, and he knew enough to know it was full of crap.

"I'd never make the NEWT requirements for a Mediwizard, I don't think. Plus I think I'd get freaked out, being around people who splinched themselves or were sick all the time." Dean smiled at Drew. "People stuck in Mungo's or the like would probably like having someone happy helping them out. Doctors - healers - are usually a sour lot. Maybe you could work with kids or something. Charm their hair bright yellow to make them laugh before you have to give them a shot." If wizards even did shots. Dean hadn't dealt with mediwizards much outside of Pomfrey.

Drew sipped his drink and nodded as he put it down. "Yeah, that's what the difference would be." he said, laughing a little. "I won't be a jerk."

He was nosy and had a taste for the dangerous side of life, which would hopefully help him get the best stories, but he wanted to build a reputation on the truth and the best information, not deceit and scandal.

"Yeah, that's the only thing I'm worried about, the exams... but I reckon I'll do okay, and I really wanna help people... like, I could go out to the places where people can't really get to doctors, so the docs have to go to them." Then he laughed and put his hand up to his hair. "Yeah, well if I can remember what bit of that thing I got wrong then I guess I could."

"Think you'd have to be a LITTLE bit of a jerk to be a reporter, since you'd have to ask nosy questions to get the truth and all." Dean grinned. "Can't really see you being an arse though, so maybe you'll be the exception."

Dean cocked his head, listening. "Like other countries and all? That'd be hard. I couldn't do it - I like having good food and proper loos and all too much," he admitted. "It's a good sort of thing to do though. Like Greenpeace for wizards?" he guessed. Or one of those kinds of help programs. Dean didn't really know a lot about them.

He smiled as Drew touched his hair. "Long as you don't have your heart set on being a hair stylist, think you'll be fine."

"Course I'll be the exception!" Drew said, grinning again.

"Yeaaah... or like, a dragon tamer or something!" he exclaimed, with overzealous amusement. "I want adventure!" As if being a wizard wasn't adventure enough.

The smile Dean gave while he was fussing over his hair colour just melted his already gooey little heart and it felt the heat of it get too close and sting him as it burned. He still smiled on the outside though. "Well, that was my secret love but I guess I'll just have to look for something else to do now." he said with a fake sigh.

Dean looked amused. Picturing Drew as a dragon-tamer was a little far off. Other than Weasley's brother, he'd never seen one. He pictured them looking a bit like Professor Moody though - battlescarred, missing limbs. Probably loads of burn scars. That sort of thing. Bouncy, currently daisy-headed Drew didn't really fit the description in his mind. "Think watching the dragons fourth year was close enough to a dragon for me." Though he'd spent about two weeks afterwards obsessively trying to remember every detail to draw them. They were just so. . . fantastic. Dragons were intrinsic parts of the sort of fantasy world that muggles didn't think existed. Seeing them up close - well, not that close, but close enough - had left Dean more than a bit awed.

"Well. Suppose some girls - and blokes - spend loads of time trying to get their hair yellow. So some people might pay you for it?" he suggested. "Think maybe you're better off with the Healing, or the reporting though. Not sure on the dragons. I'd hate to read about them taking a bite out of you." Since that'd be a big bite. Drew wasn't big enough to lose inches to dragon teeth.

"Nah, I wanna get right in there!" Drew enthused, and you could tell he'd either be really good at dragon taming or he'd be charcoal within two minutes.

Drew was going to point out that he didn't exactly know what word he'd said wrong in that incantation to turn his hair yellow in the first place, but Dean's concern for him - fictional though it was - made him duck his head and beam a five million kilowatt smile. "Aw, fanks." he said into his butterbeer.

Dean looked amused. "Think even the tamers try to keep a little distance. Up close and personal with a dragon - usually not where you want to be, right? They didn't look very friendly."

He laughed, draining the last of his butterbeer and shaking his head. "Did you want another?" he asked, nodding toward the drink in front of Drew. "Or do you want to walk back?"

Drew's smile was fond and he put his chin in his hand, staring back at Dean. "I've had a nice time." he commented, even though it hadn't been very long. "You can go if you want to. It was kind of you to stay and talk to me, but I know this can't be very fun for you."

Dean rolled his eyes. "If I wanted to go, I'd have told you. I'm having a nice time chatting. Just thought you might not want to sit about. If you're good, then I'll get us another."

He stood up, picking up the mugs, ruffling a hand lightly through the bright yellow hair first. "I meant it when I said I wanted to be friends, even if it started off a bit weird, okay?" He smiled and then promised. "Be right back." He didn't mind chatting. Drew was sweet and easy to talk to. It sounded like a pretty good way to spend the rest of the afternoon, really. They could walk back in another couple of butterbeers or something.

Drew was surprised, but pleasantly so, as Dean said he was going to say, ducking his head a little under the hair ruffle and laughing in reply, his grin broad and happy. He watched Dean disappear off to the bar to get them another drink and he put his chin in his hand again and sighed - why was it that he seemed ever cursed to never have the boys he wanted, to never have something steady with the boys he could have?

He tried to put that out of his mind and set about transfiguring a little paper umbrella out of a coaster for when Dean came back.
