Muggle and Wizarding news weren't that different from what Dean knew - both of them played things up to sell papers or get people watching the news and whatnot. The Wizarding world was just smaller - and Dean knew the people they were talking about, sometimes. So it was more personal, and he knew enough to know it was full of crap.
