Who: Kirley McCormack-Duke and Shannon MacFusty
What: Their ice cream “date.”
When: July 9, 2003 ; sometime shortly after This and This.
Where: Rolf Scamander’s house.
Rating/Warning: TBA

Why he had persisted that he wanted to, and could, bring Shannon cherry cordial ice cream, Kirley didn’t rightfully know. It was the first day he’d spent completely sober since the incident with Don and his big mouth, and he hadn’t actually emerged from his flat for more than just a spot of grocery shopping or absolute necessity in days. While he knew it was all in good fun for everyone else, it had hit a bit of a sore spot for Kirley, and he didn’t want to acknowledge it. Leigh was probably the only one that understood his sudden surly attitude, but he just wanted the whole ordeal to die off. It had gotten a little bit better on the journals, but he was still getting fan mail by the great gooey gobs filled with either sentiments of how sorry they were that everyone was being so crude or with volunteering of their services (complete with naughty pictures for ‘preliminary viewing.’ He sent the rest of them to be sorted by someone else and told them to toss any mention of the ‘incident’ in the rubbish bin immediately.

So why he was standing in the supermarket picking up a gallon of his favorite brand of cherry cordial ice cream boiled down to the fact that he’d somehow ended up with a date...or at least, it seemed like it might be. Joking around about it had turned into a serious kind of joke, and while at first he had considered just owling her a package, he was going in person. He remembered the girl from some photo shoots, though he’d never gotten to talk to her much, and never caught more than her first name. He gathered that she and Leigh were friends, but he was so caught up in all of the commotion that he didn’t think about it more than that, really. So when she’d asked him about pistachio...well, he’d just gone with the flow. Kirley was actually quite nervous though, as he got closer and closer to leaving the grocery and going to meet Shannon.

Perhaps it would be nothing at all, perhaps they would just eat some ice cream and chat politely...or perhaps they wouldn’t. He didn’t really know what would happen, and even with all of the time he had spent around women in his lifetime, dating was not exactly his forte. He began to fret...what if he actually ended up liking this girl and she thought he was a silly guitar-obsessed prat? After leaving the store, he walked for a short bit and then disapparated with a pop, but he didn’t knock on the door immediately. Instead, he paced just out of the way, placing a charm on the ice cream to keep it cold, and smoking his way through a cigarette to calm his nerves. He took a deep breath and told himself that he’d do this properly if he just stayed calm. With that, he snubbed out his cigarette, and with the ice cream he’d promised, he knocked on the door.

Leading him into the kitchen, Shannon curbed her instinct to play tour guide. Kirley knew what a foyer was and could make an educated guess as to which room was the living room, but even so, as they rounded the corner into the kitchen, she couldn't help pulling a voice and gesturing broadly about the room. "And here on your left, you'll see the Scamander household kitchen, where residents take their meals."

The spoons were already out on the table, atop a pile of napkins and Shannon settled herself down, momentarily berating herself for missing her guitar in the impromptu clean up. "A little," she answered, motioning for him to sit. "I'm not professional or anything, but I'm not bad."

By the time they reached the kitchen and Kirley was smiling broadly. He went so far as to make an appropriately appreciative noise when she introduced him to the kitchen, as if she really were giving him some kind of extravagant tour of the house. This wasn’t going to be nearly as hard as he originally feared it might be, he thought. She was certainly easy to get along with thus far.

He took the seat beside hers, and sat the ice cream down between them, “You don’t have to be a professional to enjoy it,” he commented off-handedly, “For a long time, I actually had no intention whatsoever of going professional.” He pulled the top off of the carton while he was speaking, and pushed it a little further towards her, “Ladies first.”

Shannon twisted in her chair slightly to face Kirley, she nodded. "I do," she said, gesturing towards the guitar with her chin. "I sing, too. I used to do open mic nights when I was in uni. Have you been playing forever?"

Picking up her spoon, Shannon grinned at his gesture, making a show of carving out a spoonful. She ate the ice cream slowly, licking the melting drops off the spoon before she realised how it must look and stuck the whole spoon into her mouth, gasping at the sudden freezing sensation. "Merlin, that's delicious!" she exclaimed, once feeling had returned to her mouth.

He relaxed in his own chair a little, hoping to come off as being at ease. He really wasn’t quite so nervous anymore, but he was still slightly out of his element. Talking about music helped a little though, “I don’t sing often, at least not lead, but I don’t suppose I’m horrid,” he gave a little chuckle and nodded, “You could say that, yeah. Twenty-five years and counting...admitting that aloud makes me feel a little old.” He made a bit of a face, but he was still in good spirits, it didn’t feel that long ago to him, but he supposed it was. He’d been seven when he picked up a guitar for the first time.

He watched her for a moment, but he couldn’t help but notice the way she was eating her ice cream looked...incredibly sexual. Perhaps it was just his mind going down the gutter, or maybe Don was right and he really did need to get laid. It was actually a bit of a relief when she just decided to eat it and be done with it. He smirked a little and nodded, “Isn’t it? I’ve always thought it’s one of the best flavors ever. Cherry and chocolate were just meant to be,” He picked up his own spoon and took a bite, not quite as showy as hers, but she was right, it was delicious.

"Mmm," she hummed, taking another spoonful. "This is amazing. How am I just discovering it now? I feel as though I've been deprived!" She smiled again, the surreal feeling starting to dissipate. Sure, this was still Kirley Duke, but he was normal, he was nice, he was cute, he was -

Shannon mentally stopped herself suddenly, continuing to eat the ice cream. Cute? She thought he was cute? That was new. She studied him, casually, smiling slightly. He was cute. "What made you want to go professional?" she asked, then continued, clarifying as she took another spoonful. "At music, that is. Not picking out ice cream."

He considered her question as he ate a section of cherry from the ice cream, “You really have been deprived. But perhaps fate was just preparing you for this moment, when you would discover all the answers to life in this gallon of ice cream,” he knew that was a total load of rubbish, but at least it sounded all philosophical. He rather sounded like that nut of a divination professor, he thought. But then again, he generally tended to operate under the assumption that all of life’s problems could be solved with guitars and pie.

He gave a little shrug at her question, still grinning softly, “I was working at Quality Quidditch Supply in Diagon at the time, because I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life, and I met Myron by chance one night. We played together a few times, and he was really serious about it. I thought he’d totally go off the deep end if I didn’t stick by him,” he joked a little, taking another bite, “He spent all this time searching for more people, and eventually we found them. Thus, The Weird Sisters were born. I don’t guess it was really ever a conscious decision, I never actually thought it would get this far...it was just something I loved doing. Once it happened, there was just no backing out.” And that was the truth of it, a truth most people generally didn’t get out of him, “What about you, with photography? What made you decide to go that way?”

Schooling her face into a serious expression, Shannon wasn't quite able to keep the smile out of her eyes. "Why Kirley," she drawled, trying not to match his grin. "Are you trying to imply that we're meant to be?"

Digging her spoon into the ice cream, Shannon shrugged. "My father gave me a camera when I was little and I always loved taking pictures. It just seemed logical to try and do something I loved so much for a living. Having Rolf around helped." She licked the ice cream off her spoon, smiling slightly to herself at the thought of her best friend.

He was pleased to see that she couldn’t quite keep herself from smiling when she was trying to be serious, but then again, this was one of those things he wasn’t sure about. He had the self control to look mock-offended, “I was only suggesting that you and this ice cream were destined to one day meet and that it solves all problems. Are you insinuating that we’re meant to be? Because, darling, that’s moving a bit too fast! We’ve only just begun to eat,” he jested. He thought even if this “date” didn’t turn out as a romantic something, he could definitely be friends with this lass.

He looked appreciative at the mention of the beginning of her own passion, but he didn’t miss the mention of someone named Rolf (wasn’t this his house?) and her little smile. He raised an eyebrow and dug into the ice cream a bit, taking another bite a bit thoughtfully, “So, Rolf is your...” he trailed off a little bit, curiously, actually hoping that for the love of all things good, she didn’t say boyfriend. The last thing he wanted was to come into that bloke’s house and then proceed to flirt with his girlfriend, but then again, he didn’t want to assume anything either.

Fluttering her eyelashes, Shannon moved, accidentally pressing her leg against his, then turning the movement purposeful. "I think this ice cream and I are going to have a long and happy relationship," she responded, allowing her grin to break through.

"My very best friend," she finished his question, her smile widening for a moment before the look on his face made sense and she laughed. "Just my friend," she continued, taking another spoonful of ice cream. "We've been friends since first year. I can't imagine life without him, but... just friends."

She paused, momentarily, pressing her leg against his again and smiled. "Unlike this ice cream and I."

Kirley’s mind spiraled down the drain when she started being all flirtatious. He was having trouble keeping himself relaxed and smooth anymore. She was bloody well pressing her leg against his and smiling that smile...this was not good. His mind wasn’t coming up with very many witty things to say at that moment, “Long and happy, eh? Careful about your climate though, don’t want your date to melt on you,” That was appropriate enough, wasn’t it?

He nodded a bit, relieved when she said that Rolf was just her best friend, nothing more. He really didn’t want to get himself into a situation where he was the bad guy for any reason, “The Sisters are my closest friends. I don’t know what I’d do without them either...no matter how often I would really just like to strangle them,” He had been feeling that a lot lately, but still...he’d never actually want to lose any of them as his friend. Not even Heath.

This time, he was able to handle that little gesture with a bit more finesse. It didn’t stramble his brains quite so much, so he pressed softly back, “Seems like you two are getting quite serious,” he took another bite of the ice cream, and gave a grin, sounding appreciative. He could get used to this, this wasn’t intimidating to him...it was the most at ease on a “date” that he’d been in...perhaps ever.

When Kirley pressed back against her, there was a little moment where her breath caught in her throat, struck by the surreal fact that a Weird Sister was flirting with her. She internally shook her head, not wanting to get caught up in that. This was just Kirley. Just her and Kirley and some ice cream, that was all that mattered right now. "Rolf does know exactly how to drive me mad," she agreed, cheerfully, after a moment. "But I can't imagine life without him. We've been through so much, especially since Germany..."

Shannon trailed off, suddenly realising what she'd said. It had been a long time since she'd talked to someone who wasn't Leigh or Rolf, who didn't either know what had happened to her in the Black Forest, or had been there when it happened. Then she shrugged. It was better to get it out in the open now, rather than later. She didn't feel like continuing the thought however and instead took another bite of her ice cream. "We're thinking a winter wedding," she joked, her smile not quite reaching her eyes.

Truthfully, he liked to think of himself as a rather normal guy, aside from the fact that he had hordes of adoring fans and played a guitar for a living. He really wasn’t much different than an average bloke though. He wanted a lot of the same things, and he was a single person, apart from the group of heathens he liked to call his brothers. He wasn’t quite sure that everyone in his position thought that way, but he had always been down to earth. Perhaps it had been that he wasn’t after the fame in the first place, “Best friends tend to do that quite often, I find.”

It didn’t slip past his notice, however, the way she left her sentence hanging in the air, the way that it didn’t seem finished, but had an air about it that was almost painful. Germany...something must have happened there that wasn’t very pleasant. He looked a bit curious, perhaps, but he didn’t push the subject. If she wanted to tell him, fine, if she didn’t, then she was entitled to her secrets. It did bother him, however, that her smile didn’t light up her eyes the way that it had before. That was something he wished he could change, “Since I introduced the two of you, can I be the Best Man? Rolf can be your Man of Honor, and then it’d be a right lovely wedding, I think.”

Shannon smiled, and it was a genuine smile this time. "Of course you can," she responded, graciously, then paused and pulled a thoughtful face, taking another spoonful of ice cream as she mused on a point. "You might have to wear a dress though."

She shrugged and shook her head as if to say that the matter was out of her hands. "It's just what my fiancé wants." She shrugged again and reached out to pat his shoulder in commiseration. "Can't change his mind once it's set on something."

Kirley laughed at the mention that he would probably have to wear a dress. The ice cream wouldn’t have it any other way, he supposed. But the fact of the matter was that it didn’t really bother Kirley at all, this stipulation. He was a Weird Sister, after all, “That’s alright. It won’t be the first time, and it probably won’t be the last,” he said truthfully, though he hated to think the teasing he’d probably just earned himself.

“If I can wear a dress for thousands of adoring fans, then I can wear a dress for something as important as your wedding to this fine flavor if ice cream,” he took another bite for good measure, “Maybe if I cut back on the pie a little, I’ll be able to go down a dress size in time!” His goal was to keep that smile on her face, maybe even get a laugh. That, he figured, was the most important thing at the moment.

Shannon giggled, actually giggled, then mentally shook her head in embarrassment. Giggling. Rolf would have a field day if he had heard her. "You probably wear dresses more than I do," she laughed, gesturing to herself. She owned dresses, and skirts, and wore them on occasion, but they weren't practical, and not nearly as comfortable as jeans and trainers.

Comfort was important, but the practicality issues were mush more. It wouldn't do to wear a skirt whilst on expedition or even while just shooting a wedding or a concert. She had to be able to move, and she didn't feel she could do that while girlied up.

Actually, Kirley didn’t mind the little giggle that she gave. It was cute, and it seemed that he had met his goal. A giggle was a kind of laugh, wasn’t it? He smirked a bit when she mentioned the frequency of his dress wearing, “Yes, well, they’re rather breezy,” he excused, trying his hardest not to crack a smile. This was becoming a rather outlandish conversation, but he couldn’t say that he wasn’t having fun.

He gave a little shrug as he took another bite, “It’s actually not that often, but I’ve been known to wear the occasional empire waist...or a nice tutu. All part of being a Weird Sister. It’s funny. People expect us to be strange or something. I wonder where they got that idea,” he pretended to be oblivious. Kirley was actually much more comfortable in jeans, to be honest, but he thought he’d play along, just for the heck of it.

"It doesn't do when I'm working," Shannon explained, only just able to keep her laugh inside at his quip. "It'd be very hard to hike through forests and up mountains in a nice a-line."

Taking another spoonful, she wriggled to emphasise her point. "I need to be able to move."

If he bothered to think about it, he might have noticed that he was more at ease talking with her than he sometimes was with his best friends. Albeit, they had a nasty tendency to turn his every move into a public joke, but still. He gave a nod of appreciation at her excuse on not wearing many dresses.

"Movement is quite important on occasion," he agreed, giving a little shrug, "I do prefer a nice pair of jeans, actually. Though I really would rather not ever wear shorts. I'd wear a skirt before shorts, I think," why he divulged this information he really wasn't sure, but it went well enough with their train of thought.

Turning towards him again, Shannon brushed her leg against his, gently pressing her foot closer. "Really?" she asked, contemplating his confession for a moment. "I think shorts are easier, though." He wasn't really expecting the sudden contact again, but he certainly didn't shy away from it. He just had a good feeling about this, for some reason, so he smirked ever so slightly and moved a bit closer as well, matching her step for step. When she commented on shorts versus skirts however, he chuckled slightly, watching perhaps a bit too closely at the way she was eating her ice cream. He took another bite as well, but he was much more interested in watching her, "I suppose that's true," he mused, "But I generally detest shorts. Something about short pants just doesn't settle with me." That was silly, he knew, but there wasn't a whole lot about this visit that had been serious.

"Well," setting her spoon down for the moment, Shannon turned towards him fully. "It depends on the pants, doesn't it? And the person wearing them. Bloomer style short pants... a little too much for me. Also not a big fan of shin length pants," she raised her foot up, waving her hand at her calf. "I think pants should always either be long, or short." At the last word, she gestured, tapping her fingers against her upper thighs.

It was about then that Kirley decided if he was going to be forward, then what the hell? She was the one that had moved closer first, after all. He followed suit in abandoning the spoons, because once his plan was formulated, he figured he would need his hands for at least a few moments, "I suppose those aren't bad regulations to have," he agreed, catching up her foot for a moment, giving a slight caress about her ankle, "Personally, here is my favored length. A little longer, fine, but shorter, no." It was tempting to pull her closer, but he'd already taken a pretty bold step by touching her so in the first place and he didn't want to push his luck.

Shannon's breath hitched in her throat momentarily at the touch of Kirley's fingers against her ankle. That was a surprising feeling and she opened her mouth, then closed it, then, without thinking too much about it, leaned forward and pressed her lips against his. She'd been going for a quick kiss, intending to pull back and give him the option of leaning back towards her, but there was something about his lips that made it very hard for her to pull away and she only managed it a long moment later.

One moment, he'd found himself evaluating her reaction, not sure whether or not it should be considered positive, and the next, she was kissing him. He replied in kind, not really wanting to end such a simple and perfect moment so soon. It was a sweet kiss, he thought, chaste, but lingering...one that he was sorry to see end. Shannon was very quickly making a profound impression upon him, and he hoped that no matter what came of that day, that he would get to see her again.

When she pulled back from the kiss he grinned just a little bit, almost a smirk really, "Why'd you stop?" He asked simply, a note of happiness, of contentment, tinging his tone. But he didn't really give her time to answer, knowing that if she'd kissed him for as long as she had, then it wasn't likely that she wanted it to be over either. Kirley leaned back in and captured her lips, scooting a little closer and lifting a hand to gently brush a bit of her hair back, letting his fingers trail softly over her cheek and neck.

Spreading her knees a bit, Shannon moved closer to Kirley, a part of her hoping her cousin wouldn't get too upset at what was happening right now. Kissing him back, she nuzzled her head gently towards his fingers, thoroughly enjoying the feel of him against her. When they broke for air, she pulled back only slightly, pressing her forehead against his, her grin wide.

"What would my cousin think," she smiled, a happy feeling bubbling up inside her. "If she could see us now?"

It had been a long while since Kirley had kissed someone, if he was honest. There had been a definite lacking in his love life, although he didn't want just any relationship. He wasn't overly interested in something that was just a fling. Kissing Shannon was different than a lot of the other kisses he'd ever shared, and in a really good way. He enjoyed it thoroughly, the feeling of it a bit dizzying.

His grin matched hers when their lips parted, but still they kept close. He grasped for one of her hands, idly tracing his fingers over her palm. At the mention of her cousin, however, he felt just a bit confused. Did he know her cousin? He was still smiling, but the gears in his head were turning, trying to place who exactly her cousin was. An image of Leigh floated in his mind, but surely not...right? He decided to ask, just to be on the safe side, "Your cousin being?"

Swallowing a small giggle at the ticklish feel of Kirley's fingers ghosting across her skin, it took Shannon a moment to process his question. "... Leigh?" she answered, after another moment.

Had Kirley not known she was related to Leigh? Would that change things now? She'd thought it might be weird, her cousin's boss coming over for an ice cream date, which ended up in snogging and worried, her smile fading. Would Kirley find it odd as well? She found she wasn't quite ready for him to stop kissing her and didn't like the idea that Leigh might possibly, inadvertently come between them.

With the confirmation of his vague suspicion, Kirley felt his stomach twist unpleasantly. He wasn't entirely sure that Leigh would be so pleased with the fact that he'd snogged her cousin...and he really didn't want her to be upset with him.

On the other hand Kirley really, genuinely liked Shannon...and he wasn't the kind of person that was going to let an obstacle like this dissuade him. He decided rather quickly that he'd think about how he was going to deal with telling Leigh at another time. For now, he just wanted to stay with Shannon, no matter who her relations were, "Huh," he said softly, as if it didn't really matter. He supposed that he really should have sorted that one out for himself before then. He noticed that the smile was falling from her lips, and he really didn't approve of that, "You know, I refuse to kiss you again until that smile is back," he gave a bit of a grin of his own, hoping that she would realize that he didn't want this to end just yet. Whatever problem Leigh might potentially pose could be sorted out at some other time.
