Phillip had presiding at the sung Latin mass at Church of the Immaculate Conception. It was bittersweet because he wasn't sure when he'd get the chance to preside with a choir and a full congregation. Nonetheless, the trepidation that he felt was tempered with a pervading sense of peace.
It was nearing one when he reached Foyle's, having changed into civilian clothes with a backpack slung over his shoulder. In it he had his medical kit, his mass kit, two changes of clothes, and his cassock. Spotting Adrian, he went over to him.

It was almost surreal, being back in this room, dressed in his black Jesuit cassock, purple reconciliation stole draped around his neck. He'd convince his superiors he was in a good enough state to resume his duties, and he'd said mass yesterday without a problem for the parish. Of course, since Sam's death, he'd been offering mass for his best friend, knowing it was what little he could do.
It was difficult today to keep his mind from wandering and hoping every penitent who entered was one of the wizards he knew. He'd prepared for their visits. Prepared in such a way that would certainly mean the termination of his job, but his meeting with Grace had shown him what he needed to know. He didn't have much time left at MI7, and if he wanted to do something, he had to do it while he still had the chance.
Resting his head against his folded hands, he prayed for guidance. Because he was fairly certain God was calling him to commit treason. |
