Alright. If I'm not the first person this' happened to, it seems safe to assume you've got some kind of support-network set up already.

So I'd really appreciate it if someone could find me a car, painkiller or a doctor who's quick or doesn't mind traveling.
I need to get back to Louisiana fast as I can, but I'm bleeding something terrible right now, I remember what internal trauma feels like, and it feels a whole lot like how I'm feeling.

Anyone wants to tell me the time, that'd be real useful, too.

Yeah, no. Not so much.

Probably want to get yourself a drink before you try it, pro-tip. You might be "lucky" and it's something obscure enough not to have a fandom, and a wiki, and a bunch of strangers knowing everything about you.

Welcome to Lawrence. It's like that most of the time. Except sometimes there's also apparently cursed mistletoe and weird naked guys trying to hug everyone and rugarus.

So is finding out whether I live or not a smart idea?

Because it looks like whoever was tracking me, crapped out about half way through, and it's going to take more than a casual scan to work that out.

Rugarus?

I guess that's up to you. Because when you get back where you're from you're not going to remember any of this, so it's not some Back To The Future disappearing-photo paradox thing, knowing your own destiny or whatevs. Some of us have been here more than once, apparently, but we don't remember any of it. And some of the others forgot while they were away, and remember now they're back. It's a whole barrel full of weird with exactly zero precedent, sorry.

... you'd need to ask a local. All they'd tell me was that they eat people, and you have to set them on fire, and if you see one you'll know. One of the natives, Dean, runs a class on the local weird wildlife that's recommended, if you're planning on keeping Fixing Things while you're here.

So it don't matter what I do, either way things are going to carry on going like they're going to go?

And no matter what I learn now, what happens to me, I'm going to make the exact same choices, once I get back again?

Guess that means Nietzsche was entirely right, huh?

Can't say I ever read much Nietzsche so you're going to have to forgive me if that reference sails right over my head, but yeah. That's about the gist of it.

Time, is a Flat Circle. And we run around the edge, doing the same things, in the same way, over and over and over.

You're going to do what you're going to do. There's no real choice in it, just the illusion of one.

Only way we can know we're going to do what the show tells us we're going to do.

... well. That's way, way above my paygrade - you're going to want someone with proper smarts to explain how this all works, and that's not me - but let's give it a shot.

Maybe the show shows you doing those things because you chose / choose / are going to choose to do them, because you were / are / will be who you were / are / will be. You're still choosing to do the thing, it's just that the other choices aren't ones you'll take. Doesn't stop the other options existing.

Choices you'll never take, that's the rub.

And if there's only ever one choice you're ever going to make? That's not a choice.

you cannot travel both
And be one traveler

That second road still runs through the yellow wood.

...that, that is quite a statement, right there.

And I don't reckon the road matters much, if no-one's going to walk down it.

Just tried to do the right thing, I guess.

Seeming less and less like that's a popular path mind, especially once people realise quite how hard going it's going to be to get to the end.

Wise man once said "If you can't do something smart, do something right". His roof was all covered in snow and his brains in terrible danger, but he knew some things about some things.

And that has made all the difference.

Sounds like the kind of wise I could get behind. Snow and brains aside.

Yes, it is.

I mean, we say it's not. But it still is. Someone else, someone not you, might choose it. Under different circumstances, you might choose it. But you don't.

There's no Flat Circle deciding what I do. It's just me.

Yeah, they might.

But they've already made a whole bunch of choices meaning they're not the ones there to make it.

And those circumstances? What makes you think there was a choice to them, either? Maybe your entire life up to this point's just been one per-determined "choice" after another.

You sure you're not from back home? Because that 'predetermined' 'special destiny' thing isn't getting any less old this side of the Seal.

Yeah, sounds of things your back home is a whole bunch crazier than mine.

Which I guess is saying something.

And when'd I buy into that "your back home/my back home" thing?

[info]rouxgaroux

Just go with it. The less time you spend worrying about when you started accepting the crazy, the saner you'll stay. That's my plan, anyway.

So how long can I expect to be here?

"Until the Seal gets bored with you" seems to be about as much as anyone can predict. Some people get sent back after a day or two, some of us have been here a couple of months, there's folk who've been here for years.

...guess I'm best planning for the long haul, then.

So my card's don't work, and I'm guessing my driver's license and ID are going to read as fake. Spent the last of my cash on this here six pack. What are we expected to do about that?
