Emma Swan finally found her fairytale ([info]lostfairytale) wrote in [info]wariscoming,

Who: Lois Lane and Emma and Aislinn Swan
What: Mommy-n-Me Adventures!
When: Sunday afternoon
Where: I don't even know, some Gymboree type place I guess?
Warnings: Emma isn't pleased, swearing may happen

"What the hell have you gotten me into?" Emma hissed between her teeth, as she gave Lois a side-eyed glare. Her friend had thought it would be fun to 'interact' with Aislinn and so they sat, cross-legged and surrounded by wide-eyed and happy mothers. Aislinn sat in her mother's lap, looking about as bored as Emma felt. Well. As bored as one could be when the actual feeling through them was one of horror.

Phoebe, their leader, may as well have been a Lawrence Seal-displaced transplant of the girl from Friends. She sat at the head of the circle, guitar in her lap, singing songs that the majority of the mothers (and aunts, and godmothers, and the one random father) sang along with. Some of the babies patted on drums or banged on little tamborines. Aislinn, however, opened her little mouth and gave a very impressive yawn. Emma giggled, ignoring the glare from the woman next to her. "Me too, sweetie," she whispered to her daughter, bouncing her a little to at least feign interest.

She was actually starting to think they should have gone with the newborn mommy-n-me yoga. At least that would be a start towards getting her figure back.

"Come on, everyone!" Phoebe announced in her syrupy pleasant voice. "We're going to sing the song about Froo Froo, the bunny rabbit. Looks like Katie has a bunny rabbit on her shirt, doesn't she?" While Katie's mother beamed, Aislinn's mother rolled her eyes. Of course her kid wasn't wearing anything as cheesy as a shirt with a big white rabbit on it. Only the most fashionable clothes for her daughter. Especially given who her godmother was.

That and white rabbits were just a little too storybook for Emma's taste.

"A whole hour, huh?" she muttered to Lois, taking Aislinn's little hands and clapping them.

It had all started because Cindy at work had seen the photographs of Aislinn that Lois had taped up at work. Somehow adding the pictures meant that the girl wanted nothing more than to explain all the important Mommy and Me events that babies just had to be taken to in order to grow up to be anything. Lois was pretty damn sure her mother hadn't ever taken her to any of these classes when she'd been growing up, though maybe that had been because they hadn't been around back then. Far be it from her to not inform her best friend of all the apparent activities she needed to do in order to make sure FL grew to be the best she could be.

And maybe, just maybe, she wanted to see how long it took Emma to crack or get them kicked out of the class. Not that Lois would ever admit to that. No no. This was all for Aislinn's benefit.

Lois eagerly tried to follow along with the verse that was being sung but she couldn't quite pick it up and plucked a drum out of the circle to bang on. "Hey, you could've picked yoga. You're the one who was all, oh music can't be that bad?"

She placed the drum in front of her tiny goddaughter. Lois was pretty sure they wouldn't last fifteen minutes in the class let alone a whole hour.

Lois couldn't catch on to the song being sung because the song was stupid. Who cared if the bunny went to the market? Bunnies didn't go to markets. Bunnies went to gardens, they ate vegetables, and they hopped around dropping their markings everywhere. But that clearly wouldn't be nearly as excited to the not even a year old babies as bunnies going to the store to buy hats and shoes and handbags apparently.

Emma watched dubiously as Aislinn's tiny hands flailed, occasionally actually making contact with the drum. If she was supposed to make sounds of glee at the noise, she was disappointing everyone around her. Instead, she gave it a look that Emma would swear was a glare. Her lower lip stuck out in a pronounced pout and Emma buried her face into her shoulder to hide her laughter. She could swear Phoebe was glaring at her but she couldn't make eye contact for fear of cracking up all over again.

"I would look ridiculous doing yoga," she informed Lois as she regained her composure. "And who does yoga with babies? That's just stupid." Okay. It couldn't be any more stupid than the Sunshine Song, which followed the Fluffy Bunny song and dear god, why? She was actually pretty sure her eye was twitching. That...wasn't healthy.

Lois kept her focus on the little girl, trying to keep her face composed so Emma wouldn't see that she was so very close to breaking down with laughter. The fact that Aislinn had nearly an identical expression of boredom on her face as her mother's was almost too much to handle. Like mother, like daughter was definitely apt where those two were concerned.

"Everyone looks ridiculous doing yoga," she pointed out, ignoring a glare from one of the mothers next to them. A new song started up, this time about butterflies and caterpillars. “I think she’s got the life cycle wrong in this song. Isn’t there supposed to be a cocoon for the caterpillar to turn into a butterfly? You’d think they’d put a little science in with all the cutesy crap.”

"Can you keep it down," the lady hissed, putting her hands over her daughter's ears. "We can't hear the song over all of your complaining."

Lois rolled her eyes. She really doubted the under a year old kid was being harmed by the word crap or the complaining. “You should be listening to the song,” she told the woman and pointed toward where Phoebe was still singing, though about an octave louder now. “People can be very rude, can’t they Ais?”

The sound that escaped Emma's mouth could only be described as a snort. She tried to cover it up with a cough but it turned into a genuine cough and then she couldn't help laughing at the almost offended look on Aislinn's face. Her cheeks were turning pink as she handed the baby over to her godmother to hold so she could try and regain her composure.

But she couldn't help it. She had to add, "Great, Lois, now if her baby's first word is crap, she's going to find you. And make you listen to this song on repeat."

This time she earned herself a glare from Phoebe, a woman who looked like it physically pained her to glare. She finished the butterfly song and pointedly looked at the pair causing such a disruption to her sunshine and sugar class. "Is there a problem, ladies? We don't want anyone to be grumpy on such a sunshiney happy day!" God love her, she couldn't even scold them without being happy about it.

"No," Emma coughed out, fighting back giggles. She was the kid who'd stayed in trouble in school, and being called out on it was nothing new to her. If this was a start to Aislinn's future in school, however, Emma was prepared to spend a lot of time in the elementary, middle, and high school's principal's office.

Emma's laugh was contagious, but unlike her friend Lois didn't bother trying to hide her own amusement. Instead she blew a raspberry against her goddaughter's cheek and pushed the drum out of the way. "Perhaps it might be best if you found another program to help you interact with your daughter, ladies?" Phoebe suggested, still smiling even if she looked mildly flustered by the two of them.

Lois was already one step ahead, pushing herself up as she tried to maneuver holding the baby and retrieve some of their belongings as well. "There's a coffee place like three doors down," she murmured to Emma, trying to get the squirmy child into her coat.

This was definitely not working. How the hell did Emma do this? What if she pulled too hard and broke Aislinn's arm? Or what about that soft spot? Where the hell was the soft spot? Didn't baby's have that? She was pretty sure she'd read that in one of those books. It was on the head, right?

Oh god she was going to damage the baby!

Without the baby in her arms, it was considerably easier for Emma to get up and she did. Because really, she should have turned around and walked out at the first strains of Twinkle Twinkle. She saw the struggle Lois was having and probably would've taken the time to enjoy the amusement at watching her do so but she wasn't going to let the poor girl flounder in front of these ridiculous busy body women. "Come on, princess," she told the baby, extracting her from Lois' arms. "We're going to go have fun big girl time." She grinned at Lois and nodded towards the lobby area, where she'd be able to dress her daughter for the cold air without the scolding, prying eyes of those wretched women.

When they reached the lobby, she gave an incredibly phony smile to the receptionist there before laying the baby on a bench and easing her into her coat and hat. "What the hell were you thinking!" she exclaimed and finally, blissfully, burst into giggles. Aislinn's pretty eyes widened at the sound and Emma just laughed more.

"There's my pretty girl," she said softly, holding the baby up for Lois to inspect. "Never try to get a newborn into clothing while holding them. Especially before you've had practice."

Two arms, two legs, and Aislinn seemed to be smiling. Phew. She hadn’t damaged the kid while trying to dress her. Though she sure as hell was filing the tip about making sure the baby was laying down when attempting to get her into her coat the next time.

“It wasn’t that bad.” Nope, she couldn’t even manage to say that with a straight face. “I was told it would be a great way to interact with Aislinn from the busy body at work who thought Clark and I adopted a kid. Because, you know, I just got out of the hospital a month before she was born so of course I went and adopted a kid.” Her expression was clearly a “people are morons” one. “I still don’t think she’s convinced Ais is just my goddaughter and its not some big conspiracy against her, but that’s the last time I listen to a word she says.”

Or at least she’d try not to. Cindy could meander on and on about things when allowed. “Clearly we’re not made for traditional mommy and me classes. Can’t there be a ‘Introduce your baby to the classics’ as in Bon Jovi, Guns’n’Roses, AC/DC, etcetera.”

Lois leaned forward and dropped a kiss on Aislinn's nose. "She's pretty fond of Bon Jovi whenever I sing it to her."

"Not that bad?" Emma yelped, attempting to do that trick of putting on her own jacket while shifting the baby from arm to arm. She was getting better at it, but slowly. "Oh my god, next time why don't we just take her on a field trip to a sewage treatment plant?"

She nodded towards the door and pushed it open with her hip, cradling Aislinn closer to help keep the chill off of her. "Well, now we've done it so you can tell Cindy that it's not up to Aislinn's standards. She prefers long stroller walks, watching action movies with superheroes in them, and dancing around the nursery to You Give Love a Bad Name."

Grinning, she glanced at their surroundings before nodding as she found the coffee shop Lois had mentioned. No reason to get in the car if it was that close. Making a little effort was ten times easier than trying to get the baby in and out of her car seat to go twenty feet. "She also enjoys a strong latte with cinnamon syrup. Wait, no, that's me. Come on."

It was quite something to watch Emma ease into the role of motherhood like she was doing. Not that Lois hadn’t seen her be a mother with Henry, but it was different somehow with the tiny baby. Maybe because of just how dependent an infant was on their caregiver. She couldn’t help but be amazed at how Emma seemed to know what to do when the little girl started to cry or how to maneuver herself into a jacket while still holding her. Lois was pretty sure she couldn’t even manage that with her purse and it didn’t matter if she dropped that thing.

“This latte is on me,” Lois informed her friend, making her way to be in front of Emma in the line. She wasn’t about to let her pay after that horrible class. “I think we need brownies too. After that sugary sweet class I need a real shot of sugar.” This looked like it would take a few minutes. “Do you want to go find us a table and I’ll finagle our drinks?”

Lois figured that way Emma would be able to snag a table away from the door and unending stream of cold air that swirled inside whenever it was opened.

Lois wasn't the only one amazed at how Emma had taken to motherhood. It fascinated her how easily she'd fallen in love with her children. She had never planned on being a mother. Ever. When she'd found out she was expecting Henry, she'd known the right choice for her baby boy was to give him up. But even those few moments she'd looked at him, she'd known she loved him. Him showing up at her door in Boston had only reaffirmed that feeling and the feeling had only intensified over time. And now, her precious baby girl, the one she'd so feared would only be a daily reminder of Emma's greatest mistake, had pushed her way easily into her mother's heart. She didn't understand how it was possible to love someone she'd only just met, but Aislinn was proof you could.

She followed Lois inside, glancing at her skeptically. "You do realize thanks to...things, I could technically buy a round for everyone here if I wanted?" she reminded her friend. But she didn't argue. Because frankly, Lois did owe her for that misery of a class. As horrible as that had been, she'd owe her for at least a week.

"Fine, fine." Because Lois was right about one thing, it was going to get busy and quickly. Cold day, after all. She found a booth near the back corner and kicked herself for not bringing at least the baby carrier with her. Instead she propped her knee up on the edge of the booth, making a cradle with the crook of it, and settled the little girl there while she got the diaper bag situated on the other side of her.

God. She really was getting this mothering thing. Where the hell had that come from?

Lois figured the largest size they had for Emma’s drink plus a big brownie was at least a step in the right direction concerning the fail class. She carefully made her way through the suddenly busy cafe and headed toward where Emma had sat down, unable to help smiling at the way her friend had settled into the booth. “Where the hell did you learn that trick?” she asked, setting down the food and cups, careful not to put Emma’s too close to her. The last thing she wanted was for it to spill on her friend or the baby.

“I swear,” she continued, sliding into the space across from them. “Every time I look over at you, there’s some new mothering trick that you’re doing and I have no idea where you got it from. Does it just come to you? Because I can tell you that whenever I hold Ais I’m either thinking how cute she is or terrified I’m going to break her.” It was more of the latter on some occasions. Maybe it was different with your own children? Lois wasn’t sure.

It wasn’t as though she’d never had experience with babies. She did have a younger sister that she’d practically helped raise since her mother’s death. But that was different. While she’d been thrust into that role, all it had really created was an animosity from Lucy because she wasn’t her mother and didn’t like being bossed around. Even if Lois was pretty sure that was part of the big sister criteria anyway. It wasn’t like she’d been given a guidebook to follow at age six when their mother had passed away.

“I really have no clue how you do it.”

Emma laughed a little, shrugging her shoulders at Lois' question. The truth was, she really didn't know how. "Necessity, mostly?" she guessed, grinning a bit. She picked up the cup with one hand, making sure the other rested protectively on Aislinn's tummy. The first sip in all its cinnamon glory was almost worth the morning full of Phoebe and her band of merry singalong moms.

"I don't know," she admitted, looking almost hesitant. "I really think I just do what needs to be done. Makes sense, doesn't it? It's what I've done my whole life. Something needs doing, I figure out a way. I think the same goes with raising her." She'd read some of the books that Henry had checked out for her, and she occasionally checked in on those parenting websites. But, for the most part, Emma focused on experience. If something she did made the baby fussy, then she didn't do it again. If she relaxed her daughter, she made note and did it again. If something needed three hands and she only had two, she found a way to make it work.

Frankly, it was how she'd survived as long as she had. And it was how she'd survive as a mother, as well. "You know you're not going to break her, don't you?" Emma teased, though gently. Because, admittedly, she occasionally worried over the same thing. The baby was just so tiny. "You're wonderful with her. And you're learning. It just takes practice."

Lois watched Emma as she spoke, not sure she believed the whole 'do what needs to be done' approach. Though maybe that was all it came down to at the end. Maybe you really did just learn your baby's cues and go from there. She scrutinized the tiny infant across from her and pursed her lips, unsure she'd ever learn the kid's cues.

"Are you sure I won't?" She was still pretty damn sure she could do it. "Did I ever tell you that Clark flew me to Paris after you had me watch her? I needed wine to calm my nerves. I mean, she was perfectly fine. Nothing went wrong even though I had countless possibilities running through my head on what could happen but...I don't know if I'll ever not be worried I'll break her somehow."

Lois leaned back against the booth and sipped her latte. "Plus she's going to get more squirmy soon and that just ups my chances for droppage."

"I promise you, Lois, she won't break," she assured her friend sweetly. There wasn't a doubt in her mind about the choice she'd made in godmothers. Lois was so determined to do it right, even when she was genuinely scared of doing it wrong. Wasn't that what really mattered? Emma's number one desire was to make sure that her daughter knew as much love as physically possible. She hadn't, and she didn't think Henry had as much as she'd wanted him to when she'd given him up. But Aislinn, she was surrounded with it, and Emma intended to make sure it stayed that way.

"Do you have any idea how proud of you I am?" she asked, her lips tilting in a smile. "I don't care if he had to take you to the moon and back. You were willing, you did it, and she's fine. You haven't damaged her for life and I am pretty certain she loves you even more right now." As if on cue, the baby sneezed and Emma grinned, twisting in her position to get the baby wipes from the diaper bag. "She's also a very classy lady. Boogies everywhere just for you, Aunt Lois. If that's not adoration, I don't know what is."

“You have a very strange definition of adoration, Emma Swan.” Lois wondered if she should help fish out whatever it was that Emma was looking for. Considering she didn’t have a clue what the mother wanted and would probably offset whatever balance Emma had going for her, she chose to push some napkins towards her friend instead. “Though nearly anything she does at the moment is pretty adorable.” Aside from crying and needing a diaper change. Spit up wasn’t that much fun either. The good definitely outweighed the bad.

“Did you ever want kids? I remember so many girls growing up wanting nothing more than to get married, settle down and have the 2.5 kids--never really got the whole point five part--I think its supposed to be a dog?” Maybe? Though why a dog was considered half a kid was beyond her. “It wasn’t ever something I dreamed about though. I may not have always known I wanted to be a journalist but that wasn’t ever one of my dreams.”

Could she say the same now? Lois wasn’t entirely sure about that. The thought of having her own kids was scary as hell and not something she wanted to think too deeply about. Being a godmother and a big sister-whatever she was to Kon was more than enough for Lois Lane. She still had that damn Pulitzer to earn.

Emma gave a little shrug at the napkins before finally pulling out the travel-sized container of wipes. They were softer, and wet, and anti-bacterial, too. Some things Emma still needed work at. How to use wipes wasn't one of them. She pulled one from the top of the container and went to work on a tiny pink nose as she listened to Lois.

"No," she admitted firmly. "I never did. I always swore I'd be a horrible parent, and I didn't want any kid living the life I had. Some of the kids in the group homes did because they wanted their kids to have better lives. I just couldn't take the chance." She hesitated, then, glancing down at her daughter. Well, it wasn't like she was going to go around blabbing, was it? "It was why I gave Henry up. I couldn't give him the home he needed and if he'd stayed with me, he'd have been bounced around foster homes till they declared me a fit parent. I couldn't do that to a kid."

Was she a fit parent now? Or even back in Storybrooke? It was hard to say. She knew she was better than she would've been at eighteen. Her job was demanding and scary at times, but it was honest work and she was good at it. And while neither kid didn't (and likely never would) know their fathers, they did have incredible male role models in their lives. Graham, Loki, Dick, Peter... People who were strong and smart and would teach her son to be the man she knew he could be and her daughter to only look for men who would respect her as a lady and not just some hot chick.

So yeah, she thought maybe she was getting the hang of this parenting thing. "You don't have any rush," she reminded Lois, smiling sympathetically. "You're both really young, you've got plenty of time. Assuming we don't all die tomorrow but is that really how you want to live your life? There's a fine line between 'live like you're dying' and...YOLO."

“It’s really not something I’m considering or even on a table anywhere in the near vicinity of me.” Maybe that was a bit of an exaggeration, but good lord did she mean it. Thoughts of babies was so far out of the realm of possibility that aside from cuddling Aislinn and trying not to break her, Lois didn’t really want to consider it too deeply. And not just because she wasn’t even sure kids were a thing that could be had between her and Clark--what with him being Kryptonian and her being human--but because it was too enormous of an undertaking to contemplate at the moment. “We just moved in together. Officially together or whatever. But you know, I’m good. I’m really really good. There is not ticking clock in this body.”

Lois hoped her expression wasn’t too awful about the thought of it. She did love her goddaughter, but the thought of not being able to give her back to Emma after playing with her for a little while was frightening. “I prefer watching you go through all the hoops and somehow making it out on top.”

Jokes were good. And maybe a topic change. Why the hell couldn’t she think of a new topic? Wasn’t she usually Miss Motormouth? It would be bad to will Aislinn to do something to garner attention, wouldn’t it?

Emma eyed her friend carefully as she shifted, picking the baby up and tucking her against her chest as she sipped at her coffee. She could read people well. Always had. Part of her little 'superpower'. Lois was anxious. Like she was afraid Emma would be disapproving because she didn't want children of her own. How could Emma blame her for basically saying exactly what Emma would have said had circumstances been different? She'd been so careful with Jim that the news had been more of a shock than anything. Henry made a bit more sense. Young and reckless and carefree, it was easy to see how she and Neal had made that mistake. But after seeing that world of the future, after meeting Aurora, she'd been so determined a baby could never come of it. She still blamed Pestilence, really. It was about that time, and she'd been taking a lot of medication. Maybe.

But as much as she loved both of her children and had worked her ass off to make sure they knew they were loved, neither one of them had been in the cards. So she didn't blame Lois one bit for not wanting any. So she smiled, then, and shrugged. "Trust me, I didn't plan on jumping through this hoops. I wouldn't trade it for anything and I love them both and I'd give my life for them. But there isn't a thing wrong with wanting to just enjoy time alone with Clark and work towards an amazing career."

She dropped her voice into that baby tone and murmured more at Aislinn than at Lois. "Besides, we want a mention in your speech when you win your Pulitzer. Right? Tell Aunt Lois she has to thank her beautiful and perfect goddaughter Aislinn and her stunning and witty best friend Emma."

Lois released some of the tension she’d been holding onto at Emma’s response. Sometimes moms could become very overprotective when people said they weren’t thinking about having kids anytime soon. Or ever. She’d dealt with it a number of times in her career, and each time there’d been the whole ‘Oh you’ll rethink that stance when you’re older. Biological clock and all’. Like hell. Just because she got older didn’t mean she wanted to give up on her dreams of being a damn successful journalist.

She really should have known Emma would be an exception to that rule. It wasn’t as though her friend fit into any of the other mommy stereotypes and Lois was forever grateful for that. She couldn’t help but roll her eyes at the comment about the two of them being mentioned. “Considering how big a part of my life the two of you are I’d say its a pretty good bet that you’ll be in it.”

Funny how Lois didn’t find the baby tone annoying when Emma did it. It seemed natural for it to be directed at her goddaughter, who really was the cutest baby of them all. No contest.

“I was going to bring you along to the eventual ceremony but I think I have to reserve that honor for Clark considering he’s my official partner and all.”

Frankly, Emma was more than fine with letting Lois just spoil her children instead of having her own. Oh, if she and Clark ever did decide to try and reproduce (could they do that? Human and alien?), she'd be there for her every step of the way. And she would adore her little pseudo nieces or nephews. And their kids would grow up together and be adorable and she was okay with that, too. But right then? She was more than content to just let Lois fawn over her goddaughter and make Henry feel special around every turn.

"Clark Schmark. You assume he's not going to be viciously jealous that you won and he didn't. Don't worry, your no-talent friend will clearly still be there for you." Her smile was teasing, though, and she pulled herself further into the corner of the booth to rest the baby more comfortably against her. "So long as you don't go and get yourself nearly killed first, you should be fine." And while her voice was teasing, her expression was serious. Because she wasn't fond of the idea of losing one of the few people she truly trusted. Oh, she would never hold Lois back. She, of all people, knew about putting forward as much of herself as she needed to in order to do her job. But she still worried.

"I haven't decided yet if I'm going to go back to work, to be honest." She didn't need to now, thanks to the Bauble. And Aislinn should rightfully take up most of her time. But she missed it and she'd be lying if she said she didn't.

A few months back and Lois would’ve replied with a rolling of the eyes and some joke about narrowly escaping death being her own superpower, but ever since she landed herself in the hospital it wasn’t as easy to brush it off. She still remembered waking up to Clark’s worried form and the fragility the others had treated her with for days and sometimes weeks after. While it mostly made her want to prove like hell to all of them that being gunned down in the middle of the street wasn’t something that she couldn’t move past and come out stronger...she never wanted to see that frightened look on her loved one’s faces ever again. And Lois certainly didn’t want to be the cause of it. Not that she wouldn’t run headfirst to uncover the truth, but she had finally given into Clark wanting to be her official partner so that the chances of her ever being hurt like that took a dramatic fall.

“I’ve no plans of landing myself in the hospital again anytime soon, Em,” Lois promised, but wasn’t quite able to meet her friend’s eyes. With the nature of their lives in the middle of an Apocalypse there was no telling whether or not that promise would hold but she’d do her damndest to try and not be.

“And no? You love your job.” Though, it wouldn’t surprise Lois if Emma loved that tiny baby in her arms more.
