Galinda was worried about Elphie. She knew that Thor and Caroline both said that they would talk to Elphie and she really hoped they would get an answer from her, but she wasn't certain. Or if they would tell her or lie to her. She was tired of people lying to her in order to 'protect' her. Tired of people thinking that, just because she enjoyed fashion and coffee and dancing, that she couldn't handle things of a more serious nature. Yes, she enjoyed life, yes, she was rather superficial, but that didn't mean she had no depth. That didn't mean she didn't care about people. She did. She did so completely. She was also just ridiculous in her need for approval, her need for friendship, as if it would make up for her childhood of presents but no love. She knew how people saw her, and while part of it was accurate, there was so much more and everyone just assumed she wasn't able to handle the reality and so they left her to her own devices and imagination. The last time something had been wrong with Elphie, she'd been hurt by Lucifer. Now what?
Still, despite her worry, when Elphie had told her she wanted to do something, just the two of them, Galinda had jumped at the opportunity, hoping her best friend was going to finally tell her what was wrong. Because once she knew that, she could better focus on figuring out how to get Elena ready for her prom in a month. These things were important, but right now, Elphie. As such, when her shift was over, Galinda smiled to her coworkers and headed out the employee entrance into the alley behind the mall. To see James there.
"James?"
That was unexpected. He'd been all moodified lately and thus quicker to anger with her, which meant more bruises. The one good thing about Fiyero being gone for months now was that he had no chance of seeing the bruises. He hadn't pressed during Famine but it wasn't like either had really been thinking clearly. Not like he had ever brought it up after and that was fine because Galinda was horrible at lying and hated lying to him but he had broken her heart. Had made her see that all she was worth was someone in the bed. And that was why she never thought much of it when James got mad at her, when he hurt her. Because clearly she wasn't worth anything if someone like Fiyero could have done to her what he had. Led her on while loving her best friend. Jumping between them. Using her and using her and never caring. He was all swankified and yet... Still. She needed to get home. She was supposed to be meeting Elphie.
"Hey. Let's go to dinner."
Seeing the smile, Galinda felt herself relax. He was in a good mood. Which meant that he wouldn't react so badly when she told him she couldn't go with him because she had a previous engagement. Besides, he always said he had to be there for friends when he brushed her off. He could understand that then.
"I'm really sorry, I can't. Elphie and I have plans and--"
And before she could finish her sentence, James had come towards her, back handing her harshly, to the point that she stumbled into the dumpsters.
"Sure, that's what it is."
"It is..."
Holding her hand to her cheek, Galinda looked to her boyfriend in confusion. He never hit her where it could be seen until this moment. And just like that, the light that had been in his eyes had turned cold and hard. Colder than they were even on his worse days. Scrambling up, the blond backed up slightly. It wasn't like she could just put him into a bubble. Or herself. She couldn't expose herself like that. This wasn't Oz. People couldn't know the truth about her.
"You're nothing more than a fucking slut, and now you think you can tell me you can't go to dinner with me?" Crying out as James grabbed her by the hair, the tiny blond grabbed his hand, trying to free herself.
"James, you're hurting me!" She was used to the insults, even if they hurt her. But he'd never been this angry before. She didn't understand why. Yes, she'd been distracted because she'd been worried about Elphie, but whenever she was with James, she tried to be the girl he wanted, however he wanted. She just hid the pain and soreness from the others after the fact because they wouldn't understand.
"You'll wish that was all I was doing. I'm tired of your shit." Throwing Galinda into the wall, James closed the distance and punched her squarely in the throat to keep her from talking anymore or crying out for help. She knew better, but usually they were at his apartment so he had to be careful. Still, he was tired of her games. Tired of her ignoring him for some girl she lived with. No. They had an understanding. She was there for him when and how he wanted. She didn't turn him down. Ever. "It seems you have to learn your place again."
Feeling panicked, Galinda tried to call out but the blow to her throat had done just as he had wanted, effectively silencing her. Still, she didn't want him to make her learn her place. It was painful. And Elphie needed her and she couldn't be late and it was windy and she was scared. So relying on adrenaline, Galinda ran from James, only to trip on one of the pallets, gasping in pain as she skinned her knee. Though before she could get up again, she felt the familiar weight of her boyfriend on her as he turned her over and wrapped his hands around her throat, tightening as he began hitting her head against the pavement.
"Did you think you could run, bitch?"
Anger coursing through him, James tightened his grip on Galinda's throat. She'd been so easy to pick up. Damaged behind a pretty facade. She oozed that need of approval and love that made it easy to convince her to put up with whatever he wanted because he 'loved' her. But it had nearly been a year and she still had notions of being able to ignore him. No more. It ended today.
