When the dead woman emerged from her beer chest, she sighed and almost flung the journal into the case but paused, thinking better of it. Instead, she closed the fridge up as fast as possible, hoping to keep some of the cold in. It had been a decent refuge. It worked for now. Hopefully there would be something as discreet at the convenience store. If not, she knew she'd be able to make it back here. Laura packed up her "survival kit," which really had nothing that was essential to survival, grabbed a six pack of beer, and started walking, heading back towards the carnival and, hopefully, to the convenience store.

She hadn't had much of an opinion of him, not after they had met in the forest. There had only been the vague impression that he reminded her of someone from high school, and she couldn't even be sure that the memory was her own. They got jumbled up sometimes, mixed up in transmission; sometimes her thoughts could belong to anyone. Still, he seemed nice enough, and no one had told her that she was attractive in nine months. Nine months she'd been dead, and for someone that dead she was doing pretty well for herself. Of course, the Norns had certainly helped, though she couldn't help but feel a little greedy. They weren't here, and with that glass wall it didn't seem that she would ever make it back to Ash Farm. She had to wonder if this place had a cemetery and if anyone would bother to bury her. Probably, she thought, It would be unsanitary to have my decomposed remains lying around. Will I still be conscious? Ah well. Thoughts for another time.

Jay's light was an oddity. As she knew him and could put a name and a face with it, it seemed even more so. It wasn't bright and shining and overpowering like Shadow's had been, but it was distinct. She would be able to find him if he was ever in peril. At the moment, though, she decided to just play with him a little bit. Following the light, she could feel the blood pumping through his veins as she got closer. It was hot, so alive, so warm. She was silent as she moved, and a moment or two later, only about five to seven minutes after she'd closed her journal and started walking, Laura was behind him. As far as she could tell, he was completely unaware of her presence.

"Boo," she said, placing down the cans of beer that she'd found with a slight thud. She smirked, taking a step away from him, still behind, wondering how he'd react. Humans were always so funny and interesting to study.

Laura caught it, all right, but her reflexes were supernaturally fast. By the time the can was in her hand it seemed that she had barely moved. She looked down at it, nibbling at the inside of her cheek. She didn't feel it, but it was one of those odd, subconscious actions. Fortunately it was drink, not food. She needed beverages to keep her cells hydrated; alcohol was good because it would sterilize things, kill any bacteria. Might keep her looking fresher longer. Food just sort of sat there. Trying to control her strength, Laura popped the can open.

She gave him a slight smirk, a dark one, and moved to sit on a nearby trash can. She weighed far less than a human woman, having had most of her essential parts removed and replaced by glycerin and formalin and lanolin and a whole bunch of other artificial fillers. When she hopped up, she barely made a dent. Resting the can on her thigh, she began twisting the tab back and forth. "A, B, C, D," and she paused, looking over at him. "Did you ever play this game?" she asked. "The one where you keep working the tab back and forth and whatever letter it breaks off at, that's the first initial of the name of the person you're going to fall for, or the name of the car you'll own soon, or the place you'll live one day? I don't believe in it anymore, but I can't drink beer from a can with tabs on." A pause. "Too bad I didn't find any daiquiris."

Taking a sip, she shifted slightly and looked at the fire. "Did you manage to get that going? I can't say I know many people who would be able to get an efficient fire up and running." It looked like a good one. She wished that she could feel it.

A long, awkward silence filled the air. It was so long it was heavy. "So, who are you? What's there to know about you?"

This was awesome. Jay finally had a chick who seemed to love having some beers as much as he did. Silent Bob would probably love her, too, she was almost them in a hot chick's body so far. Except for the language.

He grinned at her when she started playing that alphabet game. "You do that too? I used to do that all the time back in school!" Because he did drink beers while in school. And at home. And anywhere else. He started doing it as well, but details on the alphabet seemed to be a little fuzzy these days. "Ah, fuck it." He said and ripped it away from the can, then took a sip.

"'Twas me and this chick named Shannon. She said she was experienced so I guess we joined forces, Justice League style, and built the fire." He nodded. Now here was hoping there were more cans of fuel besides the ones on the shelves.

The question Laura asked later caused Jay's eyes to pop broadly open, and then caused him to sigh. He'd go for the lite. "I'm Jay, I'm from Jersey, I partake in illegal activities for money and I'm supposed to be a recovered addict to marijuana." He chuckled. "I hate those fucks on the internet who spend their days commenting on movies and shit but never do anything with their lives, and I love the pussy." Well it needed to be established. "And you?"

It was a bit of an overstatement, say that she loved having some beers. She was fine with it, and she could deal with it. It was sterile, at least, and maybe a preservative. One could hope. She was at least hoping it wouldn't make her decline faster.

Seeing his grin, Laura gave him back a reserved sort of smile, best described as a sad, lopsided, hopeful smirk. She liked the way he smiled. How she'd been existing as of late, not enough people smiled. He looked younger when he did that, not that he looked that old to begin with. How old was he, anyway? She felt ancient in comparison with everything else.

Huh. Shannon sure was making a name for herself. Good for her. She felt bad that she'd spent all day in her refrigerator instead of out trying to break the glass. It seemed, though, that people were starting to accept being there, and they didn't seem so resolved to get out of there as soon as possible. Not having to have broken anything trying to fight the glass was a good idea. She was going to try to wait as long as possible before people needed her strength and her speed.

Join forces, huh? What did she have to offer in the way of forces? Well, it was cooler at night, and it was easier to pass for human at night. What was there to do for a town at night? Her thought train paused for a moment. She didn't need to sleep, and it was cooler at night. She had superhuman speed and strength, and she could see in the dark as clearly as if it were noon. Also, she could feel people. She'd know if someone was moving who wasn't supposed to be. That decided it. "Can I join forces too?" she remarked, sipping at her beer. No need to hurry; Jay probably needed them much more than she did. "I won't take any of the cool superheros. I'll just be the flash. And, since I don't sleep, I'll play night watchman. I can make a whole bunch of trips around the town before sunrise. It'll help, having someone to keep track of things, making sure no one kills you humans while you sleep."

Who was she? That was an interesting one. "I was called Laura, Laura Moon. It's as good a name as any, so I still go by that. I was from Eagle Point, Indiana. I was a travel agent, but I never went anywhere in my whole life. I always thought you couldn't get addicted to marijuana, but I never did drugs other than alcohol and cigarettes, so I really wouldn't know. I hate people who decide to hurt other people for absolutely no reason. Humans have too much hate. And I loved cock," she smirked, those dark eyes flicking up to his face, staring at him, "you could say, to death." She never imagined in a million years that she would have ended up a whore.

As if it wasn't already implied that as far as Jay was concerned, she could do anything. Shrugging, he looked at her with a 'duh!' type of look on his face. "Baby when it comes to me, you can do whatever you want, be whatever you wanna be."

The way she was speaking, Jay was really starting to believe she was a superhero in actuality. And he hardly could contain the excitement of having such a cool chick here, with him, alone! It was crazy!

"Damn, I wish I could help half as much as you look like you can." Because everyone usually thought he was kind of useless, which was true, and because doing all that sounded very fucking cool.

"Nah you don't get addicted to chronic, it was either that or jail, and we were just happy we didn't have to toss the salad, man. Rehab was cool in comparison." At what she said next, Jay smirked, shook his head in brief disbelief, and then grinned. What a fucking gift from God.

"You're so simple," she remarked. Laura lacked a little in the tact department most times. She put things bluntly. It was the only way that she could remember. "You are who you are. It all seems to be right there, laid out for the whole world to see. I don't think I knew many human beings like you. I don't understand it. I was never like that. I think I lived most of my life hiding behind a mask. I was happy, yeah. I was content with what I had, but it wasn't my dream. That's where human beings get into trouble. You want what you can't have, you make a move for it, and that's when it all fucking goes to Hell."

She sipped at her beer, falling silent. Laura did talk a lot more now that she was dead. She had been a woman of few words in life. She was always smiles and kind deeds, but words usually failed her. Fear had kept them back. She was always worried that she was going to say or do something that would offend somebody or, worse, would betray her and show the world how insecure she really could be.

Though she did not often feel, she was capable of being distantly touched by powerful emotions. When he called her Baby, even though it wasn't the same, something shifted inside of Laura. She was too freshly dead for it to be maggots already, so she knew it had to be an echo. She turned to him, her deep blue eyes staring at him in the dancing light of the fire. She could see him as clearly as if it were noon. Her voice was quiet.

"I like when you call me that," she said, shrugging it off, looking away from him and down at the ground. "Baby. Somebody used to call me that. It was the closest to a nickname I ever had. I like it better than being called 20 Questions." A little smirk. That was a good nickname, though. She was a doer now. She got things done. "I guess you're not useless. It helps, finding something that I like. Some days," she looked up at the sky, "some days it's as if I don't like anything anymore. I have trouble even getting my own memories straight sometimes."

Her voice trailed off. It was hard not to get melancholy. Then he talked about rehab, and she turned, seeing his grin. Laura actually almost laughed. She offered him a smile, though it was probably one of the most depressing things in the universe. It was sad and hopeful all at the same time. It was a lopsided smile.

"So, where would you rather be, and what would you rather be doing?"

Somewhere along her speech, Jay had gotten confused. What seemed like an insult also seemed to be turning into a compliment, so Jay was left half-smiling in a very dorky way. "Uhm...Thanks?" Really, really not sure.

He also didn't know what to say, he'd been that way all his life, it was no life changing secret, no faggy me-work type thing. He was just Jay, and that was all he knew how to be.

Beer in his hand, he sat on a makeshift bench made out of another trashcan from outside, and motioned for Laura to sit on the one that was left. When she told him how she liked it when he called her Baby, Jay filled with glee. This deal was so sealed. Maybe he wouldn't even need to make the first move - lonely, melancholy chicks were usually out to forget about what made them sad by having meaningless sex, according to Silent Bob's extensive collection of chick flicks.

"So, you like me?" He asked, all suggestive. It seemed like she hadn't smiled in a long while, seeing as she was doing it wrong, mostly. Still, Jay appreciated the effort.

At her next question, Jay chuckled under his breath, as the answer came to his mind immediately. But he didn't answer "You". Instead, he thought about it a little more. "Jersey. Doing you." Ah, well...

Most girls would have been angry with Jay's lack of words. It was most fortunate for him, then, that Laura Moon was no longer a girl. Instead of smacking him, or scolding him, or making some huge scene, she laughed. It was an awkward sound, but it was a laugh nonetheless. And it got louder until she had to take the seat that he'd offered her in order to stop herself from falling over. Super strong, super fast, and she had just gotten nearly destroyed by the honesty of some stoner from Jersey.

"Yes," she remarked, shrugging, that smirk still playing across her face. It really was easy to mistake her for beautiful in the dark. "I like you." There. Simple. "I guess that means you get to stick around. Or that I won't go running off the moment your back is turned."

The dead did not have time for lies. They did not have time for formalities. They held only truth. As far as she could tell, Jay was telling the truth, and she liked it. Shaking her head, she set the can between her legs. It was a great place for keeping beer cold.

"Sex," Laura said. It was blunt, it was forward, and there was some strange emptiness behind the word. The dead woman slumped back, leaning on her hands. "I miss sex. I used to be so good at it. I'd say it's one of the top five things that I miss were I to compile a list of things that I do, in fact, miss. I know it was my undoing and all, and I know I'm supposed to have learned a lesson, but I don't care. I was such a hot blooded woman. Couldn't get enough." She paused, letting out an agonized sigh. "Nine months. It's been nine months now. I can't believe I've gone that long. I know I went without for a year for a while, but that was the first extended break I'd taken since I was..." she looked at him, shaking her head, winking. "Well, too young to be doing that kind of thing but making my mother worry anyway. What can I say? I love men. One in particular, but also in general. I guess that's what happens when your dad dies of a heart attack on the toilet."

At least she was laughing, he thought while shrugging. Really laughing. Wow. And she had said it, loud and clear. Jay almost clapped.

"Oh, good. I get that way too much." He told her after she remarked that she wouldn't run when he turned his back.

Jay would have yawned and dozed off in the middle of Laura's long speech, but it was about sex and how much she liked it, so Jay's focus remained on her and her precious words.

"Nine months?! Shit. How can you?" In all honesty it wasn't like Jay had gotten laid all that much in nine months, either. If he didn't count the conjugal visits to Justice, almost never. Or really, never. But Laura didn't need to know that. "Shit yeah." He nodded when she said she loved men. It was so on. So on!

She smirked. He seemed like the kind of guy that girls would turn tails and run from. I mean, didn't every high school have guys like him? Granted, Laura had always hung out with them. She was poor, they were poor, and it wasn't like they all had a whole hell of a lot of ambition. They'd all sit around and talk about nothing. They'd smoke weed, she'd smoke cigarettes, they'd drink, and then the party would start.

"Yeah. I'm an uncontrollable shit show once I've had a few. I don't know how many people in my graduating class had seen my underwear, at least, by the time I left high school."

Ah, good times. Well, not really. Good times were after she met Shadow. But there was something wonderful about having been so wild.

"So, when you say shit yeah, does that mean that you like men too? Or is that supposed to be encouraging me not to suddenly become a lesbian without notice?"

Reaching out, Laura gave him a playful shove. She had to be very careful not to use too much force. "And, for the record, how can I? I can't." She shrugged. "But I do." Guilt could be a mood killer, though it was faint at best.

So basically what Laura was getting at was that she'd been a slut in high school. Jay knew many of those in his own high school, the two most well known of all being Caitlin Bree and Finger Cuffs. If Laura was anything like them, she'd been around. Jay didn't judge. He actually nodded approvingly!

His smile disappeared as soon as she asked if he liked men. What the fuck?! "Shit no, bitch, I ain't gay." 'Nuff said. "Yeah the other thing you said."

Jay shrugged and offered her an expression of admiration. "You's a trooper, then." A celibate trooper. Poor woman.

Laura laughed, shaking her head, finishing the last of her beer. She arched a brow at him again, smirking. "You know, there you go with that 'bitch' thing again. If you keep using it, I might start liking it. That might be a problem, yeah? I always was one for dirty talk."

Tossing her hair, she leaned back a bit. She'd never called herself a slut, but it was possible that she had been one. Her memories were a little bit foggy. She'd always just thought that she liked to hang out with guys and have a good time when the mood was right. Slut had never even really been an option. She hadn't had enough female friends to merit that kind of talk; it was usually girls who gave other girls that kind of label, after all.

"There's nothing wrong with a little guy on guy or girl on girl action now and then. Can't say that I was ever part of it myself, but it was definitely something to see, yeah?" She shrugged. "And no trooper. It just hasn't been a viable option, having sex. Opportunity didn't present itself."

There she was again with the liking to be called bitch. Not even Justice let him get away with that. "No problem. If you wanna be called that, I don't see anything wrong with that." He shrugged, smashing his beer can between his hands.

Jay picked the fuel can up and threw some of it into the trashcan, as the fire was getting weaker. He listened to Laura with one raised eyebrow.

"Girl on girl is damn fine, but better if I'm in between." Jay smirked. "Well..." He winked, and his smirk turned into a grin. "Opportunity is here."

Her dark blue eyes looked over at him with a sad half-smile. She laughed under her breath, and the sound was a bit of a rasp. "Yes," she answered, her gaze turning skywards, "I suppose that the opportunity is here."

Getting up, Laura moved closer to Jay. She was slow, purposely moving carefully so as not to scare him. She rested a hand on his knee and leaned in, kissing him squarely on the lips, her fingers applying a little bit of pressure.

It was a short kiss, chaste, yet it felt as if the dark haired woman was throwing her entire soul into it. Her lips were soft but cold, icy, and the scent of perfume and chemicals was a little overwhelming at that proximity. She pulled away, eyes opening, and he'd find that the chill on his lips remained for a moment, there was a faint tingle, and her breath, though clean, smelled faintly of mothballs and clove cigarettes.

"I have to go fight a cougar tonight. Alone. Thanks for giving me something to come back for. I'll see you around, Jay. You're a good guy." With that, the pale woman turned and dashed off towards the woods, giving a little wave back at him.
