Day Three - After Dark
Who: Laura Moon & Cielo
What: Night Patrol
When: Evening, sometime after dark
Where: Gym, about town in general
Rating: TBD (PG-13 for language, for now)
Status: Active

It was the smell that had drawn him - but Cielo had found it to be more of a 'stink' once he was actually inside the dilapidated building. The smell of blood and flesh had all but pulled him through the large doors and it guided his light, soundless footsteps deeper still, but he had stopped himself when he saw that there was only the remains of a slaughter and feast - pale stains of vaguely cleaned blood, remains of a fire, and that heavy hanging scent. He had no interest in looking deeper for meat which wouldn't be there and a slight weight in the pit of his stomach (disappointment? hunger? boredom?) guided him back to the clean air of the night outside.

This air, too, was a strange new experience and one which he hadn't yet fully acclimated to; it was good, he had finally decided, to have air that was clean and cool play against the bare skin of his arms and legs but it was still weird not to have the constant light pressure of silver rain always on him. He definitely liked the look of the sky, the bright yellow sun during the day and that strange silver disc at night, but some part of himself kept tugging at each impression, making that strange heaviness in his chest even worse by reminding him that it would be even better if all of his comrades were here to experience this. He hadn't yet given up hope that the rest of Embryon had yet to be found in this strange Nirvana but each hour that passed only fed the heavy weight in his chest which he hadn't yet named.

Still, even under the weight of these unfamiliar things, Cielo couldn't escape habits from his days in Junkyard. Then, being small and agile, he had often acted as a scout and so it was now; walking streets that were deserted under the silence of night, he searched for a place that could act as a decent shelter. His preferences, he mused while crossing his arms behind his head, seemed to lean toward someplace elevated and private, but he wasn't sure that left many options. There was one particularly tall building in the town, but Cielo wasn't entirely sure about setting up there, if someone else had already claimed it. Another holdover, he laughed to himself as he tried to ignore the bump of the survival kit against his back with each step. Then again, from what he had read in the weird already written in journal, people were setting up claims pretty willy-nilly; it probably wouldn't be a big deal if he tried to claim that tower in the name of the Embryon...even if he was the only member of that tribe currently hanging around.

Even with that decision tentatively made, Cielo continued to idly walk the streets of this new town. New found curiosity drove him to see all that he could of the place as soon as possible while restlessness made it impossible for him to even begin to think of trying to go sleep. It probably also didn't hurt that he had read something of wild beasts in the woods surrounding the area and a little hunt never did hurt anything.

A small squawk of surprise left Cielo as soon as he realized that he was on a crash course with a rather intimidating looking woman but his innate grace allowed him to dance a quick sidestep. As soon as it was clear that no crash was coming, he opened his mouth to make some easy comment about needing to watch where he was going or pulling his mind from the clouds but the fact that the woman fell into what was clearly a fighting stance threw Cielo a bit off of his usual beat. His eyes narrowed slightly and, for just the sparsest of moments, he felt his own body react - growing tense all through and dropping low, as if meaning to use his smaller size and agility to his benefit. He knew that he had no weapon, his gun haven been taken from him upon arrival, but he felt that he could maybe put his body to fair use, especially given the fact that one of the woman's arms seemed to be rather...loose.

It took Cielo only a moment to regain sense enough to realize that this woman, even if she hunkered down like a soldier, was a civilian and he had no place picking fights with people who were outside the boundaries of war. Shaking his head, Cielo fell back to his easygoing and light personality almost as easily one could flip a switch; his body returned to its normal lithe fluidity and he grinned almost foolishly as he lifted a hand to rub at the back of his neck.

"You're pretty good," he laughed easily, his accent shaping his words into something a bit exotic. "I didn't even see ya coming. I didn't know lotsa people were out prowling around at this time of night."

A mild sense of shock passed over the pale woman when he reacted. Someone else who knew how ti fight? That didn't bode very well. She wasn't used to facing people in readied one-on-one combat, and she hoped that it wasn't a tradition that she had to start. Her dark, deep eyes stayed locked on him. What was he going to do? Was he going to make a move? He didn't seem very threatening, but he had mostly caught her by surprise. She wasn't very used to people being out and about at night. This was an exception to the rule.

When the man relaxed, Laura also let her guard down a bit. She stood up straight, her shoulders slightly slumped. In the moonlight she seemed to glow with a luminescence almost all her own; the faintest glow in the darkness really set her in sharp contrast to all that went on around her. She did not understand, however, how he could relax quite that much. This place was dark, and it was wholly sinister. Nothing good would come of this captivity. Still, perhaps she would begin to accept that she was not the only nocturnal thing; Laura Moon was not all that went bump in the night. That left a bad taste in her mouth.

"Pretty good? I'd like to think that I am exceptional. I am super fast and super strong." The accent struck her as funny. She had never really heard an accent until after her death. People were, generally, very plain in Indiana. "There aren't lots of people out prowling at this time of night. As far as I knew there was only me. That is why your presence took me so off guard."

She did not bother to ask him what he was doing out at night. That, she thought, was really none of her business. Still, she was interested by him. It was odd for her to see much of anyone. A hand slid back through her hair and she looked up at the sky. It looked peaceful tonight despite the faint gloom. Was it always gloomy here?

It was only when the woman began to let her guard down that Cielo allowed his stance to change to something fully casual. His weight shifted fully to one foot as he crossed his ankles and his arms crossed loosely behind his slightly cocked head. His expression was a friendly sort of neutral as he took a moment to observe this stranger, the only other person seemingly willing to take a chance on walking around after nightfall, but he could spot nothing obvious about her to set him back on edge; even if she did still have the set and stance of a warrior, she hadn't attacked him and she was addressing him in a fairly mild manner - the ultimate conclusion was that he had simply overreacted a bit to an unexpected encounter.

"Super fast and super strong, really?" Cielo asked. He leaned in a bit closer to her, an innocent and almost absent gesture, and widened his eyes just slightly. Not that he was unused to dealing with people who had abilities beyond the expected norm, but he really hadn't expected to run into anyone like that here. "That might be why I didn't notice ya. Guess there aren't lotsa people like that around here."

"Yea, I thought it was a bit odd that there wasn't anyone around," he agreed with a slight nod of his head. He turned to glance up the street one way then the other before turning his attention back to her. "I just got here, though, so I guess I really don't know how things go yet. So, no one really goes out after dark, yea?"

"Really." She fell silent after her flat, monotone, one-word answer. Her dark eyes stared out at him from a pale face; the shadow around them made it seem as if her eyes were sinking back into her head, giving her almost a skull-like appearance. She was glad that there was no crisis. Her arm was not bothering her in the traditional sense of the word, but it did not feel as if it was attached well. At some point she would have to find a needle and thread, or she would have to staple herself back together a bit more.

What interested her more was that he did not seem very interested or surprised by the fact that she had superpowers. People usually reacted poorly, and she usually tried to avoid them for that reason. This person, though, he was calm, cool, collected. It pleased her somehow, if she still had the capacity to be pleased, that he wasn't giving her skeptical looks.

"I am not certain about how many people have powers, nor am I certain about how many people go out after dark. This is only my third night in this place. Regardless, I do not sleep, nor do I need any sort of nourishment aside from water. As such, I have taken it upon myself to patrol the night. I feel that keeping the people of this place safe is the right thing to do. Watching over them by night, that is my job now. It is interesting to know, though, that somebody else is up and around."

"You just got here? As in just arrived, or earlier today? Do you have somewhere that you have found yourself staying? Or are you looking for a place? I can help you, if you like."

As he moved towards her, she inched back a little bit. The faint smell of perfume, clove cigarettes, and something sharp and chemically was heavy around her, and there were undertones of something earthy and damp. Someone familiar with it would know that the latter smell was death. Her shoulder cracked, and she glanced at it apathetically. Her hand lifted, fingers running over the metal in her flesh. As she studied her repair job, she seemed to almost forget that he was there. Something then occurred to Laura.

"You're not human," she said, "I couldn't sense you. That's how I didn't know that you were here. That's how you snuck up on me. If you are human, you're not human in the sense that I am familiar with."

The more time he spent with this strange lady, the stronger his suspicion that something was slightly...wrong grew. It really wasn't anything tangible - aside from the faint glow that seemed to be all about her and the sunken quality of her eyes and the arm barely held there by silver staples and her willingness to admit that she held abilities beyond those of normal living humans. Cielo found that there just seemed to be a feeling, almost an aura, about her that forced his thoughts back to the long days in the Junkyard and how everything had changed when that pod had appeared on the battlefield.

Unfortunately, he couldn't make the logical leap necessary to accuse this wan woman of holding an atma mark, of being demon as all his past companions had been. Even if she was supernatural and outside of the expected, that didn't absolutely assure that she was anything other than an exceptionally special sort of person.

"You took the night watch on yourself? That's a lot of work for one guy - even someone super strong and fast and all. I mean, it doesn't seem like there's much going on right now, but if something does happen..." Cielo allowed his voice to trail away as he thought on the fact that this woman claimed to not need sleep or nourishment but nothing relevant seemed to come from either of those facts. "Oh, it just seemed like a good idea to have a look around." It was just a slight lie, a partial truth. "I wanted to get an idea of this place so I don't have to wonder around lost too much."

"Oh! I got here earlier today with two other guys - some weirdo with a mask and a medic." Cielo nodded. "I found someplace where I'm staying for now but I dunno if I'm gonna stay there. Guess it depends on if anyone else wants to use it."

Though she drew back quickly from him when he leaned in, she wasn't quite quick enough to keep him from catching the scent about her - and the lowest scent under them all was one which Cielo recognized well from the many battlefields he had seen. It didn't make any sense, though. That was the scent of those corpses who would go on to become the silver rain, not that of a living being.

Before he could follow them to any logical conclusion, Cielo found himself pulled from his thoughts by her accusation that he was not human. He could feel the heart within his chest begin to race and his eyes widened at her - but even his very basic understanding of emotions allowed him to see that she wasn't showing signs of fear or danger; rather, it almost seemed as if she was simply stating a fact.

"You're no human either," he countered, not unpleasantly. "I don't think you're anything like me or the others but you're no civilian either. I guess we have something in common, huh?"

Wrong. Laura had never been described, exactly, as wrong. Still, she had to agree that there was something wrong with her. She was a corpse, a woman who had died, had been buried, and she was up and walking around, defending the people in this strange holding cell. What was also wrong was that she wasn't sure she had a purpose, nor was she surprised that the individual with whom she was now speaking was not human. Having met gods, having seen the crappy way that they lived in America, nothing really shocked her anymore.

"I took the night watch because it is the right thing to do. If I do not take it upon myself to keep the people here, human or not, safe, who will? There may be others, but if there is one thing that I have learned it is that inaction kills. It is, in fact, worse than choosing the incorrect course of action. Thus, I will watch over people until I am physically unable. Also, I am a creature of the night. I am thoroughly nocturnal. There is nothing for me to do other than guard the night."

It was easier to explain it that way, to say that she could not come out during the day, than stating that she preferred coming out at night. It was cooler when there was no sun, and cooler meant that she would last longer, that she would stay intact. Part of her couldn't help but pray for cooler weather.

"I was human, once. That's all you get when you're human: one chance. I'm not that anymore. You, though, I'm not even sure if you were ever human. I can't tell. Human beings I can see auras of, but I cannot see you if I concentrate. That's how I knew it." She shrugged and stretched slightly, looking past him to the sky.

"Where are you from?" she asked. "If you're not going anywhere in particular, would you like for me to walk along with you? Or, well, you could come along on night watch with me, if you wanted, and you felt that it would not be too dangerous."

"The right thing to do, huh?" Cielo repeated her words and laughed lightly, almost delightedly. The idea of doing the right thing, and morality in general, were still something of a new concept for him but he did find it to be pretty neat how some people aligned themselves one way while others chose an entirely different path. "It does make sense, though. I mean, if you're one of the strongest here and everyone else are civilians who really don't know how to fight - I guess it makes sense that it's your place to do the harder, protective work for now. Though I dunno about you having to do it all on your own."

The fact that she admitted to acting as a nocturnal creature hardly phased him. If anything, Cielo thought that he could better understand the need or desire to act more under the cover of night than he could the routines of those who worked by day - but, again, he was inexperienced with he idea of having to conform to any standard other than that of his tribe.

"But if you're not human anymore that means you got another chance, yea?" He cocked his head at her in the manner of a curious bird and blinked. "Even if you're not human anymore, sounds like you got a chance to work and repay your past."

"Me? I'm..." He allowed his voice to trail away into uncertainty for just a moment. In normal circumstances, Cielo knew that he'd guard his true nature - not necessarily because he was ashamed or embarrassed but because he couldn't predict how civilians would react to something different. Considering that this woman was something different, though, he felt that it might be alright to be honest. "I'm kinda human and kinda not, I guess. See, I have this mark on my leg-" He paused a moment to tap at the denim covering his right thigh. "that makes me kinda not human cause it makes me a, uh, well, I guess the word is demon, yea?"

"I was from the Junkyard before coming here, but I don't think anyone here knows that place. What about you? Where you from?" He nodded to the second option offered and grinned. "I don't wanna keep you from your watch, so maybe I'll tag along? I won't get in the way or anything, really."

"A demon, huh? I honestly cannot tell you that that is the oddest thing that I have ever heard. I've met gods in the past, so a demon doesn't strike me as all that out of the ordinary. I should have assumed that you lot were about; after all, I'm sure that there were angels floating around somewhere as well. If it's possible, I actually feel more at ease knowing that you're around. I was starting to wonder if I was the only source of paranormal activity in this place. Well, welcome."

She moved to reach into her pocket and cussed under her breath. "I still haven't got any clove cigarettes. This place takes away even one of the few sensations I had left. Still, it isn't all bad, I guess. I mean, I haven't been thinking so much about things that happened before I got here."

Shrugging it off, the pale woman began walking. She assumed that he would fall into pace with her, or he would not; the choice was entirely up to him. Laura wondered, somewhere in the back of her mind, what it was like to be a demon. Was it much different than being dead? Well, she imagined that it was. He, in theory, could still die. There were things that killed demons, weren't there, just as there were things that could kill gods? Still, he was too gentle for a demon. He didn't seem like the murderous, rampaging, soul-stealing beast that demons typically seemed to be. Then again, who would have known that Ibis was Thoth?

"What junkyard? Did it stink? I've had some hard times, but I don't think I've ever thought about living with trash." That sounded wretched. Maybe he, too, needed another chance at life. Maybe that was the common bond between all of the people in this place. Then again, she wasn't entirely sure that there was commonality between them all.

"There were gods and things like that in the Junkyard, too. Not too many of them but there were a few. I was sort of expecting that there'd be more like me in this place but I guess I was kinda confused about everything." Cielo found himself feeling more at ease by the simple fact that she hadn't reacted badly to his reveal that he was something other than human. In a strange sort of way, it made him feel a bit more at home to know that there were other supernatural beings wandering around. "This place does seem pretty free of weird supernatural things but thanks for the welcome. It's really good to meet someone like you here."

He did fall into pace naturally at her side and he kept an easy pace at her side. He fell silent for a long moment as he simply took in the new sights of the town. A few of the places he had already placed and classified in his mind but a few of them were still quite new and he silently wondered if his curiosity would ever be undone. Still, there was something a bit nice in the expected act of taking night patrol just as there was something nice in meeting another supernatural being - even if he still wasn't sure how being dead and walking around worked.

"I dunno. It was just called the Junkyard," Cielo shrugged slightly and moved to cross his arms over his chest. "It didn't really smell though and there wasn't much trash; it was just all the tribes fighting each other and rain day after day."

Laura chuckled. It was a dark, rasping sound, almost unpleasant, yet there was still some good humor in it. "You've met gods as well, then? You're one of the first people I've met who hasn't thought that I'm peculiar when I've told them that. It's good to finally meet someone, other than my husband, late husband, ex-husband, whatever, who actually believes in the possibility of gods walking among normal people. Well, we're not normal people, you and I."

As they walked, Laura decided it would be best to play fair with another supernatural being. After all, they could form a coalition or something. Maybe he could help her with the whole idea of not being a real human being anymore. The dead woman and the demon. It seemed fitting, somehow, since she considered herself worse than a demon. She was a human of the most wicked, inconsiderate, sinful kind. She was worse because she had possessed the ability to be "good."

"You asked what I am, and I told you that I am not human. It's difficult to define something by what it is not. As you, yourself, are not exactly human, I feel that I can tell you exactly what I am without detrimental effects. If you understand gods and demons and angels and whatever else might be out there that likes to play with human beings, then you will understand what I am about to tell you." She paused, looking for some sign from his face. She found none that indicated that she should stop. "I am dead. I was a human, but now I am a human in the past tense. I died in a car accident, and I died because of the sin of lust. I was autopsied, I was embalmed, I was buried. My husband had this coin," she said, reaching into her top to pull out a golden disc on a silver chain. "It's actually the sun, power stolen from a god's treasury. He gave it to me, and it brought me back to life. As long as it belongs to me, and I consider it mine, I will continue to exist."

And that was it. It sounded pretty simple when she put it that way, and it wasn't that difficult to follow. She chuckled under her breath again. It was the first time since arriving here that she'd had an easy go of explaining who and what she was. "There are some detrimental side effects. My rate of decay continues, and my body is decomposing even as we stand here. I have been dead for quite some time, but I happened to visit Ash Farm, where my husband was tied to a tree and dying. The Norns lived there, and Urd, the Norn of the past, has a well that contains Norn Water. It flows under the great tree, Yggdrasil, and it has the power to reverse time in small ways. It couldn't make me alive again, but it made me less dead. Freshly dead? Something like that. Thus, I get to decompose again for a goodly long time. And this time, I doubt there will be any Norn Water around for me to have. Eventually, I will become little more than battered flesh, and, one day, I will be bone." She shrugged. "There are worse things."

The Junkyard sounded like an interesting place. She'd never heard anyone talk about tribes, at least not since history class in high school. "What tribes were there?" she asked, looking over at him. "And where is the Junkyard located? Is it somewhere behind the scenes, then?"
