I suppose that it's high time I've introduced myself on this, though I'm not so sure that now's the best time. I understand that events like... this happen often here though, so perhaps it is.

I'm Tom Badgerlock. I arrived here about a week and a half ago, and have spent the last week acquainting myself with... all of this. It's all very different than where I'm from, but I think I've been getting the lay of the land.

I also suspect the money I was given on my arrival won't last too terribly long, so if anyone has any work, I would be grateful for it. I can do scribe work, though I don't suppose I'll be able to try my hand at creating inks for it without better acquainting myself with the local flora. I've done work in the past as a farmhand, and can do manual labour. Most recently I was employed as the valet and bodyguard of a particular lord, and then was recruited into the Queen's guard. I'm most proficient with an axe, though I can use a sword if necessary.

I'd never even considered such a thing. Is there much to travel to?

He's about fifteen, and at the beginning of his apprentiship with a well-renowned cabinetmaker. It's a little late, I know, but I'm afraid I didn't start thinking of his apprentiship until far too late. He'll be good at it though if he starts focusing on his apprentiship and stops focusing on girls

That depends on the galaxy, but yeah. Other planets. Moons. Asteroid belts.

I don't think that's late. But then I grew up on a farming planet so apprenticeship wasn't really a thing for us. I'm sorry you're separated from him though.

That all sounds fascinating. I suppose there's no truth to the legends that the elderlings departed from our planet to live on the moon? [...] Though, if you're from a different universe altogether, I suppose you wouldn't have an answer one way or another.

Most apprenticeships begin much earlier. The other boys apprenticing with Hap are a good deal younger, and I think he resents it a little. I'm sorry I'm separated from him too, but of late, I haven't been there as mu he's at an age where he'd be setting off on his own soon, and so I've been prepared. I was told that he'll not notice my absence at all.

When you say you're from a farming planet, you can't mean you're from a planet that's completely arable, can you?

There might be truth in your universe? I've never heard of elderlings in ours though.

That's the supported theory, that no one knows we're gone. But that doesn't mean we don't know. I miss my parent. It was always just me and him growing up.

I mean, yes? It was terraformed to be strictly a farming planet for the sector.

I doubt it very much. They've always seemed like folk tales to me. But then, I suppose there's plenty of stories I'd thought were folk tales that had proven themselves to be true, so I could be mistaken on this one too.

It's just been Hap and I for the last seven years, up until when we recently came to Buckkeep Town for his apprenticeship. It's been an adjustment, but I do miss him more than I'd thought I would. I'm sorry that you're missing your parent though. I hope you'll be reunited.

That's... incredible, I suppose. Were there no native plants or animals there before?

Almost all of the magic and supernatural here in Vallo is a folk tale at home for me. I'm learning to keep an open mind at this point.

Same to you. Or at least I hope you two get to be wherever you want to be. Some people are happy to stay here.

There were some, but it wasn't as efficient for large scale farming as it is now. Most terraforming in our galaxy is about pushing the planet to its maximum output for whatever resource the government wants to get out of it.

And you? Are you happy to stay here?

While I understand that changing some of the land for the sake of agriculture is necessary, I can't see how turning over an entire planet for farmland is beneficial for anyone but humans. That can't be sustainable, can it?
