Okay so maybe these are really obviously and dumb questions, but how do people pick majors? How do you decide what you want to do with the rest of your life? And how do you do that here? With all the inpredictability, how do you figure that out in Vallo? How do you plan for that?

Kind of related, is anyone hiring? I think maybe a gap summer or something might help. Or it won't. Maybe I'm just destined to be Maybe. Why does no one tell you being an adult is so hard? Or am I just really bad at everything? Can't con Can't hurt, right?

I don’t know about figuring it out in Vallo, but I’ve known what I want to do for a while. Do you have something you’re passionate about? Something you’re really good at?

Is self-sabotage an Olympic sport?

I like clothes and fashion, but I don’t know if it’s enough to make a career of it. Maybe as an influencer, but I probably need more marketing skills than I have. I actually do like helping people, but that’s incredibly vague. I’m very organized, and I did some assistant work, but it was PR, and I’m not sure if that’s really needed here. Do the residents of Vallo need a pr manager? A social media expert? And then there’s the magic, which could lend itself to a career. Just not sure what, if I did want to incorporate it.

What did you want to do at home?

There might be someone who could really use an assistant of some kind, or something in PR. It’s just a place to start, right? Nothing has to be forever.

I wanted to get into the FBI.

I don’t even know if it’s like everyone else Yeah. Guess there’s always the want ads. And the internet go figuring out how to make a thin resume look good.

That’s ambitious. Why the FBI specifically?

I suppose you have to decide what makes you feel the most useful. Or what is most fulfilling. After a while you can get into a rhythm that just sort of comes back after every time the world momentarily falls apart.

But what if nothing makes me feel useful? Sounds like you're speaking from experience. What's that for you?

You could say that. Once I got over the initial Vallo shock I started working at Sutton Cottage cleaning up the gardens. Once I got in the swing of things I built up a collection of miniature trees, which is kind of my speciality. I sell some of them, but I also donate a couple here and there where I think they might be needed. Now I'm teaching the art as well, and honestly even that's not taking up all my time. Might look into something else eventually. I don't like not making good use of my time.

it is certainly difficult to choose what course of study you wish to follow. I spent a long time narrowing it down. Of course one can always change one's mind later and study different things, but there is always the worry one might be sent home before one can learn everything there is that is useful to know....

Also knowing what's actually useful is hard to know, too. That's something that's got to be figured out. What'd you narrow it down to?

That is a very good point. And what is most useful here as opposed to what would be useful in your home world. I decided on political science, as that is my future career, and also advanced mathematics and literature, because they are interesting. What do you think is interesting?

So what is political science? And is it your future career here or at home?

I've been thinking about doing the school thing. At least here the school isn't always trying to kill you, so might even be fun. But all your questions are basically where I'm stuck, too.

Your school keeps trying to kill you, too? Huh. The schools here haven't tried to kill me so that's good. Well, they haven't tried to kill me outside of being school and having work and that kind of stuff. No clue if it's nice to know there's others in this boat or not. I'd say maybe we need self help books but this isn't a self help books solution. Or maybe it is. But I'm not feeling the self help books today.

It used to, yeah, although near the end there I think it was mostly just trying to make a point.

Honestly thinking about it makes me miss my Mum even more. I probably would have ignored her advice anyway, but she's usually right about things. Course it would be great if there was a book lying around somewhere with all the answers, but somehow I doubt it.

What was the point it was trying to make?

My dad would be the same. I miss him, and I know he'd have some good advice. My mom's here, and I know she's also good for that stuff. And other things. But he's got the whole dad thing going for him. They usually seem to be right about those things don't they? Even if it just sounds like a lecture in the moment. If there's a book, I bet it's conditional and super niche. There's probably spells, but I don't think they'd really help long term.

I was lucky in that I already had something I was passionate about when I started college. So...that might be a good place to start? What do you like to do?

As for how to deal with the random stuff that happens here...I can't really help with that. Honestly, I don't know if I'd be able to help even under "normal" conditions.

What'd you have? And yeah that seems to be a common answer even with the internet. Which I get. Makes sense. Don't do something you don't like or you'll really hate it and be miserable.

My normal has definitely been pretty random at home, but I think it happening at school where there's still stuff you have to do every day because it's school and then before that being younger and having a different grasp on everything because when you're younger people generally direct you but also protect you versus being here and being An Adult is part of where I'm at. Because they are two way different things really.

I really love photography, so I went to school for an art major. I didn't end up finishing though. Mostly because of exactly what you talked about: having to be an adult when I wasn't ready.

When I was in college, a lot of the kids in my dorm had no clue what they wanted to do. Some of them were undeclared for the first year while they got their core classes out of the way and figured some shit out.

I don't think those are dumb questions. People have been asking them since the dawn of time, only now there are many more options. You have to do what you feel is right for you. And I don't think one has to declare a major until their third or fourth semester in college.

The downside of more options is more options. Do you know what happens if you don't declare one? I should know this. I can look it up. But does it even happen?

There is always a liberal arts degree, which is pretty broad and touches on literature, writing, history, sociology and psychology. Basically the softer social sciences and literature. Or there is the option for a general science degree if you are more interested in things like biology, chemistry and such but can't settle on one of them.

It was hard to keep up with all the things that were happening and I was working with a friend planning events which took up a lot of time. Then I got pregnant. I might go back when Lucas is older but for now I've got a really great job and don't see the need to.
