Briar #2
I managed to avoid whatever strange magic was happening recently, and now my shakkan is here! It's very itchy and needs pruning both literally and magically, but otherwise it seems perfectly happy to be here.

The magic siphoning is going to give me a lot of power I'd rather use than try to keep in reserve, so if anyone needs any gardens given a big boost, herbs, teas or medicines strengthened, or... I don't know, big buildings demolished in dramatic fashion, let me know.

Have you met the Silniara coven yet? They do a lot with gardening, orchards, vineyards and other plant based magic. I feel like you guys would get along pretty well.

I haven't, but they do sound like my sort of people. Thanks for the tip!

Sure thing. I know the Morningside apartments had a rooftop garden at some point. Idk if that's still being kept up with or not.

There's several farms in the forest area who would probably welcome any help with growth. I think some put up flyers in the Crossed Quills asking for different kinds of help.

I ah, did notice that, yes. Let's say there's quite a lot more of it than there used to be.

That's certainly good to know. I shall have to go and take a look. I appreciate your help, lovely and mysterious stranger!

Good. The city can always use some more green.

And it's Sabrina, but good luck. I'm sure you'll get plenty of interest.

You’re siphoning magic? Do you have Geminis Are you How? Why?

My shakkan's hundreds of years old and it's been shaped specifically to hold power. If I don't draw off it occasionally it gets... well, itchy is the only people word that comes close to the feeling. It's real useful if I'm getting low, but I've hardly done any magic since I've been here, so all that extra's likely to just give me a headache.

So it produces/stores magic, and you siphon its magic to use?

Usually. Sometimes I store power in it as well. We're pretty symbiotic.

Does that mean you've got your own innate magic, too? It sounds like you two are.

I have my own magic, but I need plants or things made of plants for it to work. It's called ambient magic; magic that comes from things in the world, like plants or weather or stones. If my sister Tris was here she could probably give you a lecture on the subject.

I think I understand. No lecture needed. I can't promise I'd stay awake for it if she were here and giving it. I'm sure it's interesting. It's just lectures, you know?

Oh, I understand, I've always learned better by doing, personally. I like to read, but I don't know how Tris can keep it all in her head. Anyway the basic principle is ambient magic comes from the world and academic magic comes from the mage. That's all you really need to know, and most academics don't even know that much.

Depends on the subject matter for me. But that makes sense. I don't know if your place has magic in the air kind of ambient or it's just things in the world, but it makes sense. I don't think we've got those distinctions in my world. Just magic and magical items and things that can be used in spells and things.

You're welcome to visit our gardens here at Skyhold, if you'd like. We've had various gardeners come and go over the years, and now grow quite a few plants from the world I left behind. It's quite lush right now, due to the season, but I admit I wouldn't mind having the elfroot strengthened, as it's an ingredient in a healing potion we supply to the local medical facilities.

Happy to help, if someone can tell me all there is to know about elfroot. I've learned more about new kinds of plants here in the last month than I did in four years on the road at home; if only I could tell my teacher, she'd be furious.

I've quite extensive gardens here at Sutton Cottage that could no doubt use someone to tend to them, if you would care to.

I'd be happy to. How do I get there?

There is a waypoint not far from it. Do let me know when you arrive though; I may need to ask the wards to let you through.
