Mia was confused. She didn't recognize this room or know how she'd gotten here. The chair and the desk were way too big for her, and the computer... well, that looked ancient or like it belonged on a backwater planet. "Hello?"

A big friendly dog in the room raised its head and got up to walk over and sniff her. Mia rubbed its ears and looked at the collar and identification tag. "Isabel? Your name is Isabel?" The dog seemed to like this and tried to lick her face. She laughed and turned her face away, then went for the door.

The room outside seemed deserted too. "Is anybody there? Mom? Dad?"

"I think you're weird," Jamie said in a pleasant voice. "And I thought I already told you... farm, not a cave. Farm!" He was grinning. This was more human interaction with someone who wasn't a parent in a good, long time.

"Um. This is Earth." He gave her a look.

She raised an eyebrow at him in a look that belonged to someone older than a ten-year-old. "Well, farm and cave sound like the same thing to me. ...I think you're weird too," she added after a slight pause, but she couldn't resist a small smile.

"Earth? I've never heard of it. What sector's it in?" She was trying to peek out the window again. The wheels on the cars fascinated her.

"There's a big difference," Jamie said, almost proud. "I don't think they have cows in caves." As Mia looked out the window, he turned to look at the inside of the building. There were files and a desk. It all looked like an office he'd seen on TV. Jamie thought this all kinds of neat.

"Sector?" He scratched at the back of his neck. "I don't know. Are you really from outer space or are you playing a game on me?"

She wasn't entirely sure what cows were, and her look showed she thought he might still be some poor kid off a backwater planet. But he seemed okay.

"What do you mean, outer space? Everyone's been to outer space. Haven't you been off-planet??"

Jamie watched her closely for a minute. She was serious. And also an alien. He couldn't contain the big grin. It was so cool to be stuck in a room with an alien.

"Uh. No. No one has here." A pause. "Well, I think some astronauts have in the 60s and after that, but they always come right back after a bounce on the moon."

He sounded like he sorta thought she was crazy, but he was grinning. But his words worried her a little bit. She didn't know where she was or how she'd gotten there and this kid hadn't even been off-planet.

"Maybe I should try and find my parents." And another thought occurred to her. "I'm hungry."

"Do you have their phone number?" Now that Jamie thought about it, he didn't know how to call his parents. He'd never left home so it wasn't like he knew the standard procedure for this sort of thing. "Maybe they're around here." A pause. "Maybe we've been kidnapped or something." He didn't sound terribly concerned. "I don't remember even getting here. I'm pretty sure we're far from the farm." Another pause. "This is kinda cool."

He looked around. "Maybe there's food around. Wanna go look?"

"Phone number?" she repeated. "I have their comm frequency. ...I think." But as she searched her pockets, she didn't have a comlink. "Where did that go?"

Mia looked back up at him. "Kidnapped? Why would we be kidnapped?" Though she didn't remember how she got here either. "If we were kidnapped, we'd be tied up and stuff." She grinned. "It is kinda cool. We can go look for food and make sure we haven't been kidnapped."

"You don't even know what a phone is? Jeeze." Jamie watched her search through her pockets. He looked himself up and down. He wasn't wearing his suit. He couldn't remember when he'd last worn regular clothes.

"Maybe not. Maybe our kidnappers aren't that kind of kidnapper. Maybe they just locked us in a building and want to watch us. Maybe we're in a zoo!" His smile grew as he spoke. "We should find food and then maybe try and figure out if we can escape."

"I'm looking for my comlink, stupid." But there wasn't any real malice or insult in her voice.

"In a zoo?" She laughed some, but it was unclear whether she really thought he was funny or just strange. "I don't see any cameras. Let's go down that hallway and see if there's food anywhere." She pointed across the room.

"Maybe you're from the future. Or Star Trek or something." Jamie thought aloud. "Mia, girl of the future," he said grandly. "I don't know what a comlink is." He added, for good measure, "Stupid." But he said it with a goofy grin on his face.

"Okay." He nodded. "Should we take the dog with us? She could be a spy for the enemy."

"The future? No I'm not. What's Star Trek? And you call people on a comlink. You're the stupid one, Jamie." But she was grinning.

Mia looked at Isabel. "I don't want the dog to be a spy. ...Maybe the dog was kidnapped! Like us."

Jamie had the strong urge to tug on Mia's hair. He only refrained because he hadn't been to normal school and thusly hadn't been taught in the way of young boy. "Well you're from outer space and you are talking about things I've never heard about outside of TV. I think you're from the future. Or an alien." A pause. "Maybe both." He nodded.

"Hm." Jamie crouched down for a moment so that he was at eye level with the dog. "I think she's okay," he said after inspecting her a minute. "She can come with us."

It was a good thing he didn't, because Mia punched boys who tugged on her hair or otherwise bugged her. She stared, confused, as he explained why she was an alien. This farm where he lived must be way out there. "But you never told me what a mutant was."

Isabel sniffed at Jamie's nose and attempted to lick his face. Mia watched. "Are you sure? I mean, she seems nice. She has an ID and everything."

"Oh yeah." Jamie thought for a minute. Mia seemed trustworthy enough. "A mutant. Like me. People who are born different and can do things." That wasn't very descriptive. "Like this." Jamie stood up and stomped his foot. A dupe popped up beside him. The dupe was exactly like Jamie, even personality wise.

Before he could talk, Jamie reabsorbed him. He hoped Mia wasn't going to think he was a freak. But then, his parents had never really treated him like a freak. Maybe she'd be like them.

"The dog's with us," he said, as though he hadn't just done something out of the ordinary.

Her mouth dropped open and her eyes widened til they might pop out. This might be the coolest thing she'd ever seen. "What was that?" she breathed. "How did you do that? Do that again. How did you do that?" She was completely amazed.

Mia just nodded now, still staring.

Jamie grinned. That was the sort of reaction he'd been going for. "It's no big deal," he said coolly. He clapped his hands this time and a dupe was created. The dupe put his hands on his hips and stood in a superman like pose before saying hello.

Mia stared again. "Can I... hi," she said tentatively to the other Jamie. "What... is he real?" she asked the first Jamie. "What is it? How did you do that? Who is he?"

"I'm him," the dupe said, frowning at the fact that Mia was talking about him like he wasn't in the room.

"Yeah," Jamie nodded. "He's a dupe. That's my power. I don't know how I do it. My dad always explains and I just kinda drown it out. Something about kinetic energy..." He shrugged. Isabel padded over to the dupe and the dupe pet her lightly.

"I thought you were some kind of illusion or fancy hologram!" she explained, excited that he was real. "A dupe?" she repeated, trying to figure out what the word meant. "Wow. So you're real too? You're..." she scrunched up her face trying to explain it.

"A duplicate," the dupe said, laughing when Isabel licked his face.

"Holograms aren't real," Jamie said with a grin. "Well. Maybe in the future or in outer space." A pause. "But he's real. Like me. We're like twins."

"I can have more than that," Jamie said. As he spoke, he absorbed the dupe. It was gone in a matter of seconds and Isabel looked around a little confused as to where the Jamie she'd been playing with went. "That's so astral?" He laughed. "You're so weird!"

"You can?" She blinked as Jamie absorbed the dupe. "Where'd he go? What happened to him?"

Mia made a slightly angry pouty face. "I'm not weird! Everyone says that where I'm from. You're the one who was calling me an alien. Aliens are Bothans and Wookiees and stuff, not humans. Everyone knows that."

"I absorbed him," Jamie said matter-of-factly. "I can't just have my dupes walking around all the time. People have to think I'm normal." He didn't exactly know why. Well. Mostly it was to avoid people fearing or hating him. But he didn't think that was a good reason to hide his powers.

"I think you are weird. But I didn't say that was bad. At least you're not boring." He added quickly, "We should look for food."
