Mia was confused. She didn't recognize this room or know how she'd gotten here. The chair and the desk were way too big for her, and the computer... well, that looked ancient or like it belonged on a backwater planet. "Hello?"

A big friendly dog in the room raised its head and got up to walk over and sniff her. Mia rubbed its ears and looked at the collar and identification tag. "Isabel? Your name is Isabel?" The dog seemed to like this and tried to lick her face. She laughed and turned her face away, then went for the door.

The room outside seemed deserted too. "Is anybody there? Mom? Dad?"

	"At least ten." This Jamie hadn't trained hard, so he didn't know his limitations. "Maybe I got knocked out and am suffering temporary amnesia. Ever thought of that?" He grinned. 	"There can be ten of you??" Mia thought that was incredibly awesome. She frowned and almost said that was stupid, but she didn't remember getting here either. "Why would someone kidnap us? 	"At least." Jamie was grinning brightly. He liked Mia. "I don't know why people kidnap innocent kids. I'm not an evil bad guy who likes to steal kids." He walked behind Mia and stuck his head inside the fridge. He pulled out a tub of peanut butter and chocolate sauce. His parents weren't around, so he could go wild. 	Mia was amazed. She was smiling back at him. "Can you do it now? Can you do it anytime? You could be friends with them if you get lonely on the farm." "Yeah. I can do it whenever. They're my only friends." He said it quickly, not realizing how dorky that sounded until it was out of his mouth. He tried to let it slide, hoping she wouldn't comment.

"Eat?" Jamie fetched a spoon, searching through drawers until he got one. Then he squirted some chocolate into the peanut butter and dipped the spoon inside. "I'm not really that hungry," he said, stuffing his mouth.

	His only friends? That sounded a little sad. "I'll be your friend," she offered brightly. She watched him and then made a face. "Ewll, that's so gross." 	Jamie liked the sound of that. "Okay," he said, kinda glad she hadn't really pushed or made fun of him for not really having friends. Jamie decided that Mia was pretty cool. Especially for a girl. 	She smiled at him. He wasn't so bad for being from a farm and being stuck on-planet his whole life. "I make something like this at home and tell my parents I had a sandwich." But she still went over and took the spoon from him, dipped it in, and put a big spoonful in her mouth. The peanut butter was sticking to her mouth but it tasted so good. "It is gross, but it's good at the same time," she laughed.

"I'm still hungry." She pulled over a chair and rummaged around in some cupboards until she found a box of crackers and began to munch. She sat on the counter, letting her legs swing free. "We can explore and see if there's anyone else here. Or we can play on one of the computers and try to call our parents."

	Jamie hopped onto a stool beside Mia. He continued eating his pb and chocolate. "I don't think anybody's around." He took a deep breath and then shouted, very loud, "ANYBODY AROUND?" 	"I don't know if we're kidnapped. And if we are, our kidnappers really really suck." Jamie tried to think of other reasons why they'd both show up in the middle of a city in an office like this. 	"Yeah," Jamie said with a confident nod. "Me and my dupes could probably take a big guy." His plan was to stomp any kidnappers while Mia ran away, but he didn't say this out loud. "A datapad is what you..." well, how did she explain it? "It's what you read stuff on. It fits in your hand. Like... a portable computer."

Mia frowned too and went to stand next to him. "Yeah, how'd you... what? Why is my name on there? Are we missing persons? Were we really kidnapped?" But that didn't make any sense. "It says it's a report. It's signed with my name at the bottom."

"It's cause you live on a farm." Mia had decided his lack of knowledge about... everything, really, was cause he lived on a farm. "I'll help you now, though."

She stared at the report, then looked around the rest of the office. "This is where I was, it's the first thing I remember here." She climbed up in the chair at the desk. "Hey! It's a picture of my mom! And some blond lady. And that's my cousin with the same blond lady. And that's a picture of..." she picked up the third one, frowning.

Jamie thought that Mia's knowledge came from being from outer space. And from the future. Even if she didn't think so, that's what he believed.

The picture was of a couple. A guy who could have been Jamie in a few years and a girl who could have been Mia in a few years. They were smiling at the camera and could have been friends. Or more. "He kinda looks like my dad..."
