Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:darius summers, jean grey, purifiers plot, remy lebeau

Who: Darius, Remy, Jean, NPCs
Where: The Purifier's base
When: early Sunday morning
Warnings: random power manifestation, allusions to violence, daring rescues.

Darius groaned as he regained consciousness. The last thing he could remember was being in a truck of some kind. Or maybe a plane. It was hard to tell. He wiggled a little, grumbling. They'd bound him tightly, and his hands were asleep. But so far that was the worst thing, beside the missing tooth and the swelling on that side of his face. But that was old. He remembered getting those.

So they hadn't done anything to him in his sleep. By all rights he should be dead, so that was a blessing. This group didn't seem as well organized as the ones he knew about. That left him with what, exactly?

No eyesight. No mobility. Legs and arms trapped. No gag, though.

"Hello? What was the safety word again?" The joke surprised him, but only for a moment. But only a moment. Hearing his own voice seemed to enervate him, and he wiggled into a more comfortable position, taking stock of the noises around him.

"Lemme go, you sonavabitch."

Remy groaned softly, tensing his limbs to feel out his binds as he was blindfolded as well. His hands were encased, limiting his tactile contact. Oh great, they were clever.

"Well, dat was more dan one word, actually," he sighed. "Why can't it be a aggressive volleyball team doin' dis, just once?"

"I thought it was 'pony'. My bad." He laughed a little, shaking his head. "I don't think I'd have fought if it was a volleyball team. Though I would have kind of hoped for more sex and less violence. You're Remy LeBeau, right?"

It had been a while since he'd seen Gambit, even in his own world. "Small world. Bastards get you too?"

"Oh no, dere'd been a pushy volleyball team, I'd have succumbed wit' a grin." He chuckled and groaned as the bruised ribs disapproved. He wiggled to test the bonds and took a break.

"Oui, mon ami. Did we meet or did you know de ot'er me? Sound like one of des petits, but I didn't pay attention t'Xaiver's students."

He may be a incorrigible flirt and enjoy ruffling feathers, but going after kids was wrong to him.

"Dat dey did. Still sufferin' from an over-expressed gene t'go out and do stupid t'ings, armor and spandex not included."

"Other you. I'm Darius. Scott and Emma's kid. When we get out of this, I'll tell you the story over a beer."

He sighed and wiggled toward the voice. "I think I have one of those too. Would have helped if God had seen fit to give me superpowers."

If he could get to a wall, he could wiggle upright. Then he just had to make his way to the door, and. . . figure something out. "They got power neutralizers up?"

"Scott and Emma, huh?" he chuckled. "I pity whomever you take a shine to, Darius. Dat's one hell of a gauntlet t'run. Half-expected your mother t'just walk over and hit me for what she found in my head."

"De hell you do. Dad's Fearless Leader, you've got no choice."

He wriggled about and focused on his interkinetics on the blindfold, only to get nothing. He sighed and wriggled his head enough to loosen it and take a look around.

"Seems dat way, I'm not getting anything t'work. Stupid pig-suckin' sons of babblin' crack-whores."

"I hope their ears fall off and they get gangrene in their brains. Let rot fix rot."

Okay. Wall here. Good. "Think we're in the same cell? Might be able to unbind each other." He made a lot of noise as he stood, scuffling and wiggling, rediscovering sore spots he had forgotten. "Fucking hell."

The wall did manage to knock his blindfold loose, though now it was resting on his nose. But at least he could see a little. "Jesus."

There were at least twenty other prisoners. This was not good.

"Eloquent and archaic. At dis point I'm particular about how dey should suffer, but don't want t'list de VDs alphabetically."

He turned his head, eyes growing accustomed to the light slowly, to the boy's voice. Scott and Emma's kid for certain. "Your mom's gonna kill whoever got ya on de jaw."

He nodded to the exclamation. This was not good at all, but most were only beginning to come to, not yet panicking or catching unwanted attention. He could also see under the door and spotting no shadows on the other side, braced himself awkwardly on the floor. "Dey gloved me, so pardon de graceless rollin' about."

"That would imply that we're giving them the chance to breed. "Don't see why we should show them courtesy they don't show us."

He scooted toward Remy, balancing carefully. "Is it that bad looking? I was hoping it just felt like shit." He flexed his jaw a little, and plopped down next to Remy. "No gloves on me. No information, either. I just got picked up for starting a fight with 'em. Their loss."

He sat back to back with Remy, and his fingers sought out the knots. "You know, I never thought being into bondage would be helpful in a real world situation."

"It is rather wicked-looking. De girls will be fussing over you for weeks to come," he winked as he turned to reach and mess with Darius's knots. "Dere's a long list of people from ol'times dat would do dis, but the amount of people rounded up... narrows de list do de really really bad names."

Remy chuckled and nodded. "'Every day is a learnin' opportunity' or somet'ing like dat. My acrobatics may or may not have been inspired by diving out of bedroom windows with a shotgun aimed at ma tete."

"Nah. You don't know the ladies I live with. Ophelia might, but that's because she's too sweet to realize that I probably deserve everything I get."

His fingers weren't able to feel much, but he worked at the knots diligently. "Lorna said something about Purifiers. So we've gotten off light, as far as I can tell. Unless you have Legacy. In which case I'll beat the living shit out of them for you."

His statement made Darius laugh a little. "I learned how to take a fall from my first girlfriend. Superstrong, superPMSy. Not that you'd know anything about that."

"With de bumper crop of mutants dey scooped up, dey don't seem t'be in much of a rush." Remy shuddered, he hadn't thought of the virus just yet, but was pretty certain they hadn't exposed him. "Merci for de offer, but dere won't be enough of dem left over when I finish grinding dem t'pulp."

His fingers slipped a bit, but very very slow progress was still progress. "What, de strong fierce types?" he laughed and shook his head as they worked "Nah, no idea what you're talkin' bout. I like de femmes of ma coeur sweet and petite, prone t'faintin' at a ladybug."

"Well, I did cheat on an exam in high school." He did his best mimicry of his father's voice, figuring that keeping things light would be the best bet.

"If they managed to import Legacy, I imagine the line will be around the block at the very least. And now I'm imagining members of my family in germ proof suits beating the snot out of these yokels. Why can't my imagination match reality?"

There was the sound of heavy footsteps, and Darius paused, pulling his hands apart a bit. He was still stuck. Dammit. This wasn't going to go well.

The door opened, revealing a rather beefy man carrying a rifle, and a very thin man who smiled at them in a very creepy manner. "So they've woken up. Good."

"I asked for a wake up call at nine thirty," Remy snorted, immeadiately pulling the smart ass card to keep them focused on one.
He loosen more loops of Darius's binds, hoping it'd help the boy. "I will not be writin' a good review, dats for certain."

The butt of the rifle dug into his collar in a flash and he grunted hard. "Shut up, you dirty mutie. I should cut that tongue out, be an improvement."

"Didn't do so good wit' your mother, did it?' This time, he swung his legs into the skinny man's shins as the rifle came down, the standing man howling in pain. The two grabbed Remy by his shirt and hair to take him away.

Darius gritted his teeth and lunged at the man with the rifle knocking his shoulder into the man's knees. The gun went off, and several things happened all at once.

The power flickered. This knocked out the generators keeping the mutation nullifiers running. At the same instant, Darius disappeared, and the bullet went through where he had been not a moment before.

The man looked confused, and moved to aim his gun at Remy again. Of course, he didn't know that the nullfiers had suffered from a fatal error and were about to short out, making them useless.

Of course Remy noticed the loss of his one conscious ally and son of friends, but there wasn't anytime to stop and ask questions. Tee novocaine-feeling across his skin disappeared and he look down the barrel with a wicked and dark smile.

"Merci beaucoup."

The bind flared magenta and exploded with his biokinetics and he lunged forward at the same time. Grabbing the gun, he put the barrel into the man's nose with a satisfying crunch. The other one's feet were swept out and a dirty kick across the face kept him down.

People were shouting outside, he didn't have much time. He ran to the nearest victim, cutting ropes or blowing chains. "Darius, you better be alive."

Ten minutes later there was the sound of chaos from outside the cells. A man flew through the open door, and into the wall.

He was followed by an angry redhead in a miniskirt and a rather disheveled sweater. Jean had been on her way home from a meeting when shit had gone down. She blinked a little, eying the group of untied, mostly unharmed mutants, and the very harmed guards.

"Huh."

"Cheri, if I knew I'd be able to use my hands afterward, I'd grab n' kiss you."

"I promise you'd be able to use your hands." She hugged him, glad to see that he was okay. "Is Kitty here? We're missing a couple other X-men."

She looked around, taking note. "I wear I thought Darius was here. We've already had one person fly off the hook looking for him." She chewed her lip a little. "Let's get out of here. Anyone horrifically injured?"

He laughed and hugged her back, winking with a grin.

"Kitty? Petite Sprite?" Remy's eyes swept over his pack of lost puppies. "Not here, haven't seen her. Piotr tear dem down t' atoms yet?"

Remy did flinch, worry clear to the redhead. "Darius, he was here. We were untyin' and hecklin', den dey started shooting and he disappeared." He shook his head. "De bullet never got him, but whatever 'e did, knock out de neutralizers."

Losing a kid, THAT kid, to one of these bastards felt worse than the beating he took.

"Damn. Okay. Well, I can find her later. Let's get all of you to safety." This time she winked at him. "Not that you need me."

She was certain that Darius would take care of himself. Beside, thirty innocent people were a more immediate concern than one who wasn't even present.

"Display? What the hell were they planning?" Though Jean had to believe that she didn't honestly want to know. She wandered the room a bit, checking on a few people who weren't moving normally. "Think you can help a couple people get out? We've got reinforcements heading this way, with transport."

He looked away with a shudder, talking in a very quiet voice. "You know how dey play, show only de freaky ones wit' odd attributes and den de public thinks all mutants are scary and horrifying. Normal lookin' ones mutilated might cause an uproar."

He nodded and turned to the huddle groups, charm on strong and telling them to get together, help others, they were blowing this pop stand.

She shrugged. "Big enough that they've been able to take people from a bunch of countries. Too big for my tastes."

She used her tk to help anyone who couldn't walk well. "You were always good at rallying people. When this is over, we're going to need one hell of a warehouse for the celebration."

Everything went smoothly. Most of the prisoners were too exhausted to do much but follow orders. The others were instilled with a sense of calm, to keep them from panicking. "What happened, exactly?"

He winked. "It's de accent, ma Cheri. Us Southern gents always sound reassurin'," he purred before smirking. "Or de secondary mutation, but dat ain't so romatic-soundin'"

"I dunno what others did to attract attention, but Darius and I did de stupid t'ing of going and lookin' for trouble," he rubbed his head gingerly. "Dere was a lot of talk around de courthouse dat sounded like ol' times. I left after a case, saw a woman wit' green hair, a normal person, getting attacked."

"He's helping Cable and Domino. She went into labor during an attack." Her tone was oddly bouncy. "They're both safe. I'm hoping that Cyclops and Hulk find the other base we think is in the area, so I can peek in on them for a minute."

She nodded grimly. "Darius and Domino were shopping for provisions before Lorna sealed off the compound. We have some younger kids that needed to be protected, not to mention a formerly pregnant lady. Darius got taken, Domino got away." She shrugged. "There are a lot of humans who are getting fucked with. Darius at least has connections to mutants."

What a sad state of affairs. "I wonder how many people here were just caught in the wrong place at the wrong time?"

"Domino? Poor madame, but if I had to t'ink of someone with de guts to do dat, she'd be on de tip of de tongue. Course, she'd jump up and start ripping people apart immeadiatement," he added ruefully

"I honestly think that, had she been captured, she would have been returned within the hour. Or the whole thing would have ended with Cable making every Purifier believe they're a frog for the rest of their lives."

She thought for a minute. "He reads as completely human. He's had three tests, including one here. Though I suppose it's not completely impossible. Just not likely. Whatever happened to him must be because of an outside force." He really wasn't on the top of her priorities unless he'd wound up back in danger. "Hopefully, wherever he is, he's managed to keep his head, and is safely tucked away somewhere."

The sun seemed horribly bright to Jean, after her time in the cell. She shaded her eyes with her hand, looking for their ticket home. Havok was supposed to be coming with a bus, which would be the easiest way to transport everyone without making them completely freak out.

"Look at his parents. He'll do just fine and handle de problem logically, becoming de figurehead of a new vigilante group, or land in de lap of some space-harem. Den, we won't hear from him for months."

He looked about, knowing Jean had a plan to get out of his cesspool. "Jean, he mentioned a good point. Dere any signs of Legacy virus where you were?"

Jean was about to reply to his previous statement when he asked her about the virus. Her body went stiff, her expression blank. She hadn't been around when the Purifiers had used Legacy. The idea hadn't even been there.

"This is the first bolthole we've found." Her tone was somewhat uncertain. "I don't. . . they didn't say anything about it, and I didn't catch any of them thinking about it." The news nearly knocked her on her ass. She thought about telling Havok to turn around, just in case. "Why would you think they'd have that?"

She sighed, running her hand through her hair. "Okay. So we can't go back to the compound. There are too many people there. My house is relatively secluded, and I've never really talked about my powers on the board, so I think it might be the safest place. He shook his head. "Unless dey too used de portkeys, and if dey don't like us I doubt it, dey had to use some kind of transport t'get us here."

"Pfft. I'm already a Clairol Red Robin, a few more grey hairs won't hurt." Had they used the portkeys? She wasn't sure. They had at least had some knowledge of them, since that seemed to be where they'd congregated. "Alright. But everybody needs to avoid contact with other people if they possibly can. No windows rolled down, and we park the cars inside the warehouse. You know about anything big and empty in Milan?"

If anyone would have an encyclopedic knowledge of the various hiding places of the world, Remy would.

"Customs. It'll serve two purposes at once, and there's a portkey close to the area, if I remember correctly. Unless you think the mob would let us borrow a ship to quarantine a bunch of possibly diseased mutants."

She nodded, then turned toward the crowd of people, sighing. In the light, they didn't look good at all. "How many of you can still drive?"

A few hands went up. Well, at least there was that. "Alright. We're going to drive to a portkey, and go to Rome. Remy will lead you from the portkey there to customs, where we'll regroup. After that we'll be going to Milan, and getting on a bus there to a safe house. Once we're there, I'll contact a doctor and organize a way to get him to us, or get us to him."

Her voice held calm assurance. She'd learned how to deal with large crowds of people, and this was just like leading a student assembly. Only instead of reckless teenagers this was a pack of complete strangers who had no reason to listen to her. Part of her wished Scott had been the one to find this crowd instead of her. But most people seemed to understand, and there were a few sporadic nods from some of the lucid members of the group.

Remy stood behind the woman, admiring just how natural this leadership thing was for her. Not his thing, and he had no problem with it, but seeing her in action was inspiring. Those that held questioning looks saw his trust and obedience to her and complied. He picked up a teenaged girl with a twisted leg, who thankfully stopped crying, and headed to the compound's garage with the pack of dazed and tired people in tow.

The keys were either on hooks or with the gaurds, so he spent a few minutes hotwiring the nondescript vans to life. Jean was consoling some frightened people having bad reactions to the vehicles they had been stolen in.

Eight rumbling vans began to sluggishly exit the garage, in the proper direction for their escape.

Jean set off to get transport on the other side, enclosing herself in a tight telekinetic bubble, to keep any virii she might be carrying inside. She contact Hank and told him the situation.

She also warned Scott and Bruce about the posibility of the virus being used by the Purifiers.

Getting a bus in Milan was easier than she'd expected. She started the engine with her powers, sealing it to keep germs in. She drove toward customs, anxious to get the group to safety.

Remy was smiling his best, convincing smile. There were four guards at the customs, two were particularly dour and he had to rely on his charm and smooth-talking more than he had in a long time. The herd of tired, sullen and dirty people behind him, ready to fall asleep standing up, didn't look much like an tour crowd and the old Italian grandfather raised his eyebrow at the mutant.

"Plaza de la Concord open market" he shrugged helplessly. "Tough strip."

Finally they were let in, shuffled like sheep after Remy, to a most empty warehouse for produce checked out of quarantine. The people did not need to be told to eat and Remy stood outside, waiting for Jean with a bright red mango.

About an hour later, Jean arrived at customs. The bus was much more efficient when it didn't have to worry about things like gas. Jean smiled at the guards, and quickly made them forget the group, slipping past to meet with Remy. She checked on everyone, nodding as she looked around. "Okay. I've got transport, and Hank and I came up with a plan. Just one last hop to go."

She sighed, pulling her hair back into a ponytail. "And then the bickering over showers can commence. Hank's going to come to us, get everyone under quaratine. The house should be big enough to get everyone comfortable." For a moment she let herself contemplate what it would mean if the Purifiers had used the virus. But that was something to worry about later. No need to scare anyone else more than they already were, Remy included.

"Alright. I'm ready to go rally the troops if you are."

"Sounds like a bon plan, even if I don' like worryin' de good doctor."
He tossed the mango to her. "I rally. You take a break, Cheri."

Walking back into the area where people were feeding, dozing or checking their makeshift triage, he called them up to their feet. Most numbly followed, tired and anxious for a rest and safe place. The few resisting the orders and starting to make a row were put in place with a red and black glare and a wolfish grin.

The bus lurched and ambled away towards Milan and hopefully peace and quiet.

Jean let Remy take over, weary and grateful. The last time she'd used her powers this much had been a long time ago. Nearly as soon as the bus was rolling, Jean was asleep. She'd given Remy directions, and the likelihood of them being stopped was low. She trusted Remy to get them all home safely.

Remy steered the bus rather well for a land tanker, having forgotten the road rules of Italy for five minutes before switching to the proper side. He followed the directions Jean had left in his head, as if this was an ol' paper route, smiling faintly when she finally fell asleep. Most of the bus followed her example, nodding and drifting off after the harrowing event.

A few hours later, the bus stopped and parked at the mansion with a relieved sigh of its own. Remy chuckled and stepped outside to find help, not willing to rouse any passenger until there was something to do. He cracked his back, bones repopping in place and reminding him he wasn't the cocky spry thief he used to be.

There wasn't any help, but a spry little terrier bounced up and put her paws on his legs, barking joyfully. She loved people, and missed all the good people who gave her pettings and things.

Margie's barking woke a couple people, but most were sleeping too deeply. Jean groaned softly, and slid out of her seat. She peered out the window and stifled a laugh. Quickly she hopped out of the bus, scooping the wiggling mass of fur up. "Sorry. She's the worst guard dog ever."

He chuckled and brushed his hands off from greeting the dog back, playing and rubbing her back.

"Au contraire. De burg'lars'd be cuted t'death," he winked. "And she'd leave enough evidence in fur t'trace them back."

Jean laughed, inordinately happy to see her adopted puppy. A few of the conscious passengers peered out of the bus, and Jean smiled brightly at them. "There's a shower in there. If you're quiet, you can get about ten minutes in before someone else bangs the door down. Any clothing you can find is yours, we've got a pretty good selection. Bed down where you can."

The more rested of the lot moved. The others just kind of stared. She sighed. "Go to bed." Direct orders were easier to deal with, and the rest trudged in. "Let the rest sleep. I'll stay here and give direction. The master bath is on the second floor all the way at the end of the hall on the right. If you hurry, you'll beat the others there. My bedroom's attached to it. But you're not allowed to say you've gotten into my bed without giving context from this day forward."

"I suppose findin' a souvenir for proof would warrant vengance as well." He mocked-pouted before looking down at the suit that was a complete loss and laughing.

"I've looked n' been covered in worse, et you know dat," he chuckled but nodded obediently. "But I t'ink I'll be greedy and take de offer, if you poke me when de fun starts. I can at least herd dem about, gimme a stick."

He kissed her cheek. "Merci beaucoup ma Cheri, for de save mostly et de shower." He gave her an old friendly smile, little grateful to the Purifiers for letting him see her and play hero one more time, before jogging away and climbing up the trellis to steal some hot water.

Jean hugged him, glad she could help at least one old friend. "I'll wake you up if I need you. Go get some rest you scoundrel." She pulled up one of her porch chairs, keeping an eye on the bus. Later, she would think about what all this might mean for the future she was hoping to build. For now, she just hoped the passengers they'd brought would be seen to soon.
