Who: Jack Harkness and Mia Jesbar
What: Drinking, at the Star Wars cantina
When/Where: Right the heck now-ish, starting in Central Park
Warnings: PG-13 for intense flirting situations, and much much boozing.

Jack couldn't help but hum along with the makeshift radio in the ship as he set her down, admittedly glad to be doing something social for once. He loved his family of course- and there were certainly plenty of them to keep things interesting- but he was above all else a social man. He needed the company of people he could talk to without the constant reminder of... everything.

Today, that person was Mia, which only served to make Jack's smirk wider. Not only was she beautiful (and unfortunately taken, Jack kept having to remind himself), but she was one of the good platonic friends Jack had in thsi place, which made her even more special in a way. It took a lot to keep Jack's attention without sex, but somehow, she managed.

Hopping down from the wing, he turned the invisibility shield on, and started towards the bridge where he and Mia usually met, looking around to see if she'd actually beaten him to the punch. Also not easy to do to a time traveler, but she was good.

Jack didn't comment on that, just gave Mia a more sincere smile as he followed her out of the lift.

His eyes adjusted easily to the light, and he listened to her explanation. There was the mental equivolent of a '?!' at the description of the band that she probably felt, but years of necessary diplomacy stopped him from making the joke.

If barely.

Mia was open to everything around her to sort of drink things in better with the Force, so she was confused for a few seconds at Jack's reaction. Then she realized. "Oh, come on, is your mind in the gutter all the... never mind. It's jazz, okay? It's jazz music." She shook her head while laughing.

He immediately looked both jokingly offended, and properly embarassed. "If you heard that out of context, with my background, what would you think? I didn't say anything," Of which he sounded extremely proud. "Besides, translators usually use a cultural equivolent for things like that. So when it didn't... thoughts." He did well to block off that particular train of thought, so she didn't have to be subjected to the images.

"Do I look considerate enough to be a translator?" she laughed, then paused in front of a door where music was drifting out before heading in. "This is it, c'mon."

A band was playing up on a stage while patrons moved around the cantina or sat drinking or listening. There were seats at the bar as well as well as tables and booths around. "Want me to order for you at the bar or do you wanna pick blindly?"

A finger tapped his temple sagely. "You don't have to. Standard issue, for my... last job. Nerual implant translator, with a basic data interface." He followed her inside, and then to the bar.

"You order. Something with a little local flair. Might as well get the full experience," He gave the bartender a bright smile and a wink, despite knowing their gender- if they had one. It was hard to tell, sometimes.

She stared at him again, continually surprised. "Really? What other surprises do you have?"

Mia was amused watching him flirt with the bartender. "Can I get two Corellian ales?" Then added to Jack, "This is one of the most popular drinks with all the local flair you want."

"There's this really, really great thing I can do with my tongue, if you want to see," He winked at that, before laughing. "I don't know. I don't think about it anymore. Secrets by senility, nothing more."

The drink sounded interesting, and he nodded once, grinning. "Sounds good. Hard stuff?"

Mia shook her head with a laugh. "Somehow, I don't think Jamie and Raven would approve."

"You're the asking the lightweight?" she grinned. "I think it still is. Corellian whiskey's harder, I think. Especially the brand Whyren's Reserve. The whiskey's usually black market stuff though, and pretty expensive."

The bartender brought their ales then, and Mia told him to put their drinks on Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn's tab without batting an eyelash. "So. Where do you wanna sit?"

"Raven would just want video, but... yeah, Jamie'd probably kick my ass," He just shrugged, reaching for his ale and taking a drink. There was a second of consideration before he swallowed, and then another little hum.

"Not bad. What's in it? Or am I really going to regret that question, Jack, just shut up and drink?"

"I'd probably kick it too," she teased.

"You know, I don't even know." Mia took a taste sip, and though she didn't drink often, anything from home right now was more than welcome.

Jack was the look of purity after her words, even going so far as to pout slightly. "Oh, c'mon, I was joking."

At her words, he took another drink, this time the consideration going towards whether he recognized anything in it or not. He actually kept most track of where he was, and where he'd been, through the local drinks. "I have to admit, I admire the guts of drinking something that could be... who-knows-what. It's a favorite philosophy of mine, actually."

She grinned. "You know I am too."

"Well I'm not exactly an alcoholic beverage expert, Jack. Has nothing to do with guts. I couldn't tell you what was in it even if I wanted to."

"Whatever it is, it's fermented, and that makes it worth my time. Now, you said harder was sort of... black market? Am I going to owe you a ridiculous amount of money, here?"

"We'll just owe Qui-Gon money." Her eyes were impish, and it was hard to tell if she was joking or not.

"Don't worry about it. I have credits stashed somewhere. If I want to exist in this timeline too, I'll just get everything set up. Remember -- I was in 'shipping' long before I was a Jedi. If we skip forward to when my ship is, you can take a present home with you."

A brow rose, but he didn't comment on the statement. He'd caught the Jedi Master's tab bit, but didn't know if that was an acceptable thing, or her pulling one over on someone. it was obvious by the look, though, that he approved.

The next comment obviously peaked his interest, and the second brow joined the first. "Is that right? We'll definately look into that, later, then." He rose his glass to her in a semi-toast, before taking another drink.

Oh, she fully planned to pay him back. She was sure her Master would understand, what with the whole time difference thing, but she didn't need to explain that now.

Mia was determined to work on her drink slowly, but coming home deserved some type of celebration. She matched Jack's semi-toast and took a longer drink. "So how are things, really?"

The question made him sigh lightly- really, he'd been doing just fine ignoring it. But he didn't want to brush Mia off, knowing she really did care. And he needed to talk to someone.

"Things are... kind of strange. I mean, work's fine, I've been taking on the cases I can, doing a few under-the-table things for some of my family, nothing there. But... I haven't had the chance to see half of my kids in weeks, and more of them just keep showing up. Not to mention my brother's kids, who all seem desperately confused about me not remembering them, or about me having to get to know Gray again. And it's... complicated."

Not stressful; no, game station full of Daleks about to kill him, no way off, no chance, was 'stressful'. But... he did worry about his family. What they thought of him. And all of the double standards were starting to make his head spin. He really didn' tknow how to deal with it.

"How do you not see half of them? Don't you all live on that island?" Mia was genuinely confused. She didn't know if they didn't have time, or Jack didn't have time, or what.

"Yeahhh," she drew out, "they seemed really anxious for you to talk to your brother. I don't know if you ever did yet, I didn't even know you had a brother, but that's between you and him. I only push on the stuff you wanna talk about."

"Island, Mia. It's a big place, and it's not like we have game night. Besides, our schedules never mesh- I mean, I don't sleep. Half my kids can go days without having to, and we still never meet at the same time." He took another drink at the comment about his brother, looking down in his glass as he answered.

"I went for drinks with him, yeah. He- I haven't seen him since we were children. Our planet was attacked- I lost him. Apparently he met me- the other me, with Torchwood, some time down the line. After being rescued from some pretty awful things. I'm glad..." He pursed his lips, "I'm glad he was able to find himself a life. But that was sort of hard to take in, you know? I mean, he's... a good man. A bit... quieter, thanks to what happened in his life, but he's still my brother." He didn't mention his father's death, or his brother's slavery out loud, but there was probably a great deal of pain underlacing his words, even if it was nowhere to be seen on his face.

She chuckled at her mistake. "I guess I keep thinking you're all in one big mansion on the island or something." She frowned again though as she listened.

Mia ordered something heavier for him and pointed out a table in the corner where they could talk. She nudged him in a sort of comforting way, not sure what to say, really. She wasn't the best at this. "It all sounds kinda overwhelming," she finally settled on.

"Oh, we are. But 'mansion' is about the size of an apartment complex, and obviously with 30 of us there, it's a little hard to check in with everyone. It's... not ideal. As close to it as we'd probably get, but not..." He just shrugged, unsure of what he was trying to say with that.

When they moved to the table, he nudged her back before dropping into his chair, draping himself over it. "Overwhelming's a good word. Insane's another, but then I've been there for a long time. I guess I just... I don't know. I can't help but feel sort of responsible for them, you know? And then they go out and meet people, and have families, and then we feel responsible for them, too, and it just keeps growing. Before coming here, I didn't even take care of a pet, and now I have enough family to inhabit a small island. Literally. I don't know what to do with it- what anyone wants from me,"

Mia rested her chin in her hand as she listened, having no idea what to say or if there was anything to say. Or if there was even a solution.

After a minute of mulling it over, she asked, "Do they bug you about wanting to spend more time with you? Or is that you wanting to spend more time with all of them?"

"I don't know. Usually, I'm drunk by this point." His restraint was completely for Mia's benefit, but he didn't feel the need to say that.

"How about you tell me a little more about this place? Obviously a... colorful history,"
