Who: Jack Harkness and Mia Jesbar
What: Drinking, at the Star Wars cantina
When/Where: Right the heck now-ish, starting in Central Park
Warnings: PG-13 for intense flirting situations, and much much boozing.

Jack couldn't help but hum along with the makeshift radio in the ship as he set her down, admittedly glad to be doing something social for once. He loved his family of course- and there were certainly plenty of them to keep things interesting- but he was above all else a social man. He needed the company of people he could talk to without the constant reminder of... everything.

Today, that person was Mia, which only served to make Jack's smirk wider. Not only was she beautiful (and unfortunately taken, Jack kept having to remind himself), but she was one of the good platonic friends Jack had in thsi place, which made her even more special in a way. It took a lot to keep Jack's attention without sex, but somehow, she managed.

Hopping down from the wing, he turned the invisibility shield on, and started towards the bridge where he and Mia usually met, looking around to see if she'd actually beaten him to the punch. Also not easy to do to a time traveler, but she was good.

Oh, she fully planned to pay him back. She was sure her Master would understand, what with the whole time difference thing, but she didn't need to explain that now.

Mia was determined to work on her drink slowly, but coming home deserved some type of celebration. She matched Jack's semi-toast and took a longer drink. "So how are things, really?"

The question made him sigh lightly- really, he'd been doing just fine ignoring it. But he didn't want to brush Mia off, knowing she really did care. And he needed to talk to someone.

"Things are... kind of strange. I mean, work's fine, I've been taking on the cases I can, doing a few under-the-table things for some of my family, nothing there. But... I haven't had the chance to see half of my kids in weeks, and more of them just keep showing up. Not to mention my brother's kids, who all seem desperately confused about me not remembering them, or about me having to get to know Gray again. And it's... complicated."

Not stressful; no, game station full of Daleks about to kill him, no way off, no chance, was 'stressful'. But... he did worry about his family. What they thought of him. And all of the double standards were starting to make his head spin. He really didn' tknow how to deal with it.

"How do you not see half of them? Don't you all live on that island?" Mia was genuinely confused. She didn't know if they didn't have time, or Jack didn't have time, or what.

"Yeahhh," she drew out, "they seemed really anxious for you to talk to your brother. I don't know if you ever did yet, I didn't even know you had a brother, but that's between you and him. I only push on the stuff you wanna talk about."

"Island, Mia. It's a big place, and it's not like we have game night. Besides, our schedules never mesh- I mean, I don't sleep. Half my kids can go days without having to, and we still never meet at the same time." He took another drink at the comment about his brother, looking down in his glass as he answered.

"I went for drinks with him, yeah. He- I haven't seen him since we were children. Our planet was attacked- I lost him. Apparently he met me- the other me, with Torchwood, some time down the line. After being rescued from some pretty awful things. I'm glad..." He pursed his lips, "I'm glad he was able to find himself a life. But that was sort of hard to take in, you know? I mean, he's... a good man. A bit... quieter, thanks to what happened in his life, but he's still my brother." He didn't mention his father's death, or his brother's slavery out loud, but there was probably a great deal of pain underlacing his words, even if it was nowhere to be seen on his face.

She chuckled at her mistake. "I guess I keep thinking you're all in one big mansion on the island or something." She frowned again though as she listened.

Mia ordered something heavier for him and pointed out a table in the corner where they could talk. She nudged him in a sort of comforting way, not sure what to say, really. She wasn't the best at this. "It all sounds kinda overwhelming," she finally settled on.

"Oh, we are. But 'mansion' is about the size of an apartment complex, and obviously with 30 of us there, it's a little hard to check in with everyone. It's... not ideal. As close to it as we'd probably get, but not..." He just shrugged, unsure of what he was trying to say with that.

When they moved to the table, he nudged her back before dropping into his chair, draping himself over it. "Overwhelming's a good word. Insane's another, but then I've been there for a long time. I guess I just... I don't know. I can't help but feel sort of responsible for them, you know? And then they go out and meet people, and have families, and then we feel responsible for them, too, and it just keeps growing. Before coming here, I didn't even take care of a pet, and now I have enough family to inhabit a small island. Literally. I don't know what to do with it- what anyone wants from me,"

Mia rested her chin in her hand as she listened, having no idea what to say or if there was anything to say. Or if there was even a solution.

After a minute of mulling it over, she asked, "Do they bug you about wanting to spend more time with you? Or is that you wanting to spend more time with all of them?"

Jack sighed, scrubbing a hand lightly over his face. "It's a little of both. I don't know. This isn't the best drinking conversation."

"Well what do you wanna talk about?" She grinned a little. "Or we can just drink ourselves blind and go home really late."

"I don't know. Usually, I'm drunk by this point." His restraint was completely for Mia's benefit, but he didn't feel the need to say that.

"How about you tell me a little more about this place? Obviously a... colorful history,"

"Why aren't you now? We can get you something harder if you wanna get drunk."

"The cantina or the planet?" Mia's drink was already fuzzying her thoughts.

Jack shook his head. "Personal philosophy, never get drunk in a completely foreign galaxy. People tend to die that way," Not that he would really, you know, stay dead. But it made him feel more prepared, to think of those things ahead of time. "And, I meant the planet, but you can start with the cantina, if you want."

It took her a bit longer than it normally would have, but she finally nodded. "I'd do the same thing in your place."

"Hmm. Coruscant's pretty much the center of the galaxy, right? And lots of trade routes come through here. It's been the political capital of whoever's ruling the galaxy for... I dunno how many years. So in war, everyone wants to take it over. But the planet's been around so long they just keep building more buildings on top of each other. So the further down you go, the more seedy and dangerous and dark it gets."

"And it's managed to survive all that? Huh," His people were much more fond of the 'big gun' theory of war- if they don't agree with you, blow up the rock and eliminate the problem. The fact that this place stayed, even with so many other planets around that would work, interested him in a vague way.

"Is there something special about the place itself, or just a figurehead kind of thing?" For all his interest in ships and weapons, Jack could take a scientific interest in things, from time to time. Weird, that those times came most often when he was working towards getting drunk, but there it was.

"Maybe a figurehead kind of thing. But just cause of it's location with all the hyperspace routes and traffic, and the population, if you control Coruscant, you pretty much control the galaxy. I dunno. Politics gets lost on me sometimes."
