who. Harry and James Potter
what. Father-son bonding. Over women-folk.
where. Harry's flat
why. I would like to take a break from the torture porn!

James had had enough of the singing. He could handle the nudity well enough, but the singing drove him a bit batty. He wasn't really sure which was worse, singing about nothing in particular at all hours or singing awkward truths at people he cared about. Both were pretty bad.

So he found himself seeking refuge at Harry's. It seemed that Harry needed a mate and James could use the company. They both had their own separate relationship troubles. If nothing else, James figured they could bitch and moan about their lives over a pint.

James figured it best to give his son some space. He apparated outside of Harry's door with a loud crack and then knocked. "Oi, mate. S'me."

"I'm sorry, mate." James wanted to reach out and comfort his kid but he could barely comfort himself in this situation. "We both love you, you know." James didn't know what else to say.

"Keep saying you understand. Problems with your bird?" James corrected himself quickly, "Ginny, I mean."

Harry nodded. "Yeah, I know. It's... weird, you know? I'm finally able to meet my parents, but they aren't even together."

He looked up rather quickly. "I... don't know. I don't know if I'd really call her mine. I think..." He sighed and tried to gather his thoughts.

"Yeah." James couldn't imagine that sort of thing happening to him. He frowned. Really, there wasn't a big enough apology he could give to Harry.

"You think?" It was better to focus his attention on Harry. Better to stray away from James' love life for a bit.

He shrugged one shoulder. "I don't know what to do. I feel like she belongs to a different me, like she should be with a different me. Maybe it's selfish of me to say that... to want to be with the Ginny I knew back home. This is Ginny here, but it's not, at the same time. And part of me wants to be with her, but I..."

Harry felt so lost and confused and worst of all, he wasn't sure he should or could be with the girl he loved. He blinked rapidly, looking away.

James listened quietly, feeling for his son. There wasn't any good advice on what to do if your girlfriend wasn't quite your girlfriend. "Sorry, mate," he said.

"I don't know what to do, Dad. We waited so long, I even thought I might never see her again, and then Voldemort was dead, and everything was going to be fine, and then I ended up here. And I'm not saying here is a bad place, or that I... regret meeting you, but... sorry's a good word for it," he mumbled.

"I get it," James said. Harry might not have put it wonderfully, but he understood well enough. "I can't tell you what to do. I don't know what's best for you. You do, though. You gotta figure it out. And it has to be what's best for you, yeah? Not what everyone else might want."

Harry nodded, aware he looked somewhat glum. "I'm sorry, Dad, I didn't mean to... you were talking about you and mum. But that's why I feel like I understand."

He hated this, this moping around, this glum feeling. "D'you want to go out? Where was that place that had the stuff that was like firewhiskey?"

"Don't apologize." James looked at Harry. There was sympathy in his eyes. "I'm glad you told me. Glad we're together. Misery and company and all that."

James almost grinned. "You want to get pissed?"

"Yeah. I'm not sure I could talk to anyone else about this." Harry wasn't sure he could tell Ron or Hermione, his two best friends about this. Ron was Ginny's brother and Hermione was her best friend. It just wasn't smart. There was Sirius and Remus he might confide in soon, but James, his dad, was closer to his age. It made more sense.

Harry smiled, it wasn't quite a grin, but it was close to it for a second. "Yeah. I think I do." He knew the problems would still be there later, but for now, he needed to take his mind off it and get rid of the ache inside.

James hadn't gotten good and drunk in a while. Ever since Sirius had sobered up, he'd strayed away from drugs and alcohol in a show of solidarity. Sometimes, though, the occasion called for liquor and a smoke.

"Good." James was on his feet in a minute. "Drink away our problems for the night. Let's go."

Harry smiled, a little more genuinely than he had a minute before, and got up off the couch. "That one bar we went to when I first got here, right? I'm ready. Last one there has to pay," he said cheekily.

He had his wand out, concentrated hard, and turned on the spot, expecting to feel the squeezing sensation that still made him prefer flying a broom. But there was nothing.

Harry opened his eyes and blinked, finding himself still in his flat. He tried again, turned on the spot, and found he'd only moved a step away from where he'd just been. "What the... blimey..."

James apparated. When someone issued a challenge like that, he didn't waste any time. But after waiting a minute for Harry to arrive, he wondered if something had gone wrong. He popped back into the apartment and gave Harry a Look. "What's wrong?"

Harry looked worried and frustrated. He felt like he was back in the 6th-year Apparition class. "I don't know, I can't... I can't Apparate. I tried twice already." Wondering if he was doing something wrong, even though he'd done it hundreds of times before, Harry tried again. What were those D's again? Determination, d-something or other. He concentrated. Closed his eyes, turned on the spot.

Still nothing. He looked at his father with a bewildered expression.

"Huh." James looked around. He didn't seem too upset, just confused. "Try ... transfiguring that." He pointed to a chair. He needed to know if Harry's magic was gone or if it was just that he couldn't apparate.

Harry looked at the chair and wondered for a moment what to turn it into. A dinner plate should suffice. He pointed his wand at the chair, gave the incantation, and... nothing.

"Dad? What's going on?" Harry tried not to sound panicked. He tried to make the chair float. Nothing happened there, either.

"I think you caught it..." James said. "Don't panic, eh? It's just... it's like the singing. Might last a few days but it'll pass." James smirked. "You might sprout weird powers or something next. Or burst out into song."

"So... I can't do magic anymore?" He felt lost. Discovering magic had been the best thing that'd happened to him.

Harry's eyes widened. "Weird powers? What kind of weird powers? And I don't want to burst into song." He looked horrified at the thought, especially that he might end up singing at Ginny. "What do I do?"

"Not right now, apparently," James said. He shrugged lightly. There wasn't anything he could do about that. "Weird powers.. like the mutants around here, maybe. I don't know." James looked a bit dumb. "You wait 'til it's over and laugh at it because there's not much else you can do."

Harry looked at his wand, feeling like it had failed him somehow. "Is my wand okay? It's only me that can't do magic?" He sighed a little. "I really need a drink now. Can I... er... Apparate over with you?"

"I could try out your wand. Doubt there's anything wrong with it, though. And it's just you." James approached his son. "C'mon, let's go." He put an arm around Harry. "Hang on." And then, with a loud crack, they apparated.

Harry hung onto his father and closed his eyes tight as they Apparated. It was somewhat of a relief to know that this would be temporary, or that he hadn't forrgotten how to do magic. But he still wished this hadn't happened. He felt... vulnerable.

He stepped away as they appeared near the pub. "Thanks, Dad. I feel like I failed my Apparition test." He gave a half-hearted try at a laugh.

James let his son go and started walking toward the pub. "I remember those days." He grinned. "I had a bit of trouble getting it right at first. And Pete..." he laughed and let the sentence hang.

The night was cold but the pub was warm and there were people milling about, eyes glued on television screens. Muggle sports were playing.

"What did he do?" Harry asked curiously. He thirsted for stories of his dad growing up, especially from Hogwarts days. "How long did it take until all of you got it right?"

Harry stepped inside with James and searched for a good table. "How's that one, in the back?" It seemed secluded enough that they could talk about magic freely. And in case one of them did burst into song, hopefully it wouldn't attract too much attention. Hopefully.

"He had some problems." James grinned. "Bit of a hopeless git sometimes. For a few minutes, we thought he'd split himself in half." James moved toward the table in the back that Harry had pointed out. "It didn't take us too long. We're all pretty bright."
