who. Harry and James Potter
what. Father-son bonding. Over women-folk.
where. Harry's flat
why. I would like to take a break from the torture porn!

James had had enough of the singing. He could handle the nudity well enough, but the singing drove him a bit batty. He wasn't really sure which was worse, singing about nothing in particular at all hours or singing awkward truths at people he cared about. Both were pretty bad.

So he found himself seeking refuge at Harry's. It seemed that Harry needed a mate and James could use the company. They both had their own separate relationship troubles. If nothing else, James figured they could bitch and moan about their lives over a pint.

James figured it best to give his son some space. He apparated outside of Harry's door with a loud crack and then knocked. "Oi, mate. S'me."

Harry looked at his wand, feeling like it had failed him somehow. "Is my wand okay? It's only me that can't do magic?" He sighed a little. "I really need a drink now. Can I... er... Apparate over with you?"

"I could try out your wand. Doubt there's anything wrong with it, though. And it's just you." James approached his son. "C'mon, let's go." He put an arm around Harry. "Hang on." And then, with a loud crack, they apparated.

Harry hung onto his father and closed his eyes tight as they Apparated. It was somewhat of a relief to know that this would be temporary, or that he hadn't forrgotten how to do magic. But he still wished this hadn't happened. He felt... vulnerable.

He stepped away as they appeared near the pub. "Thanks, Dad. I feel like I failed my Apparition test." He gave a half-hearted try at a laugh.

James let his son go and started walking toward the pub. "I remember those days." He grinned. "I had a bit of trouble getting it right at first. And Pete..." he laughed and let the sentence hang.

The night was cold but the pub was warm and there were people milling about, eyes glued on television screens. Muggle sports were playing.

"What did he do?" Harry asked curiously. He thirsted for stories of his dad growing up, especially from Hogwarts days. "How long did it take until all of you got it right?"

Harry stepped inside with James and searched for a good table. "How's that one, in the back?" It seemed secluded enough that they could talk about magic freely. And in case one of them did burst into song, hopefully it wouldn't attract too much attention. Hopefully.

"He had some problems." James grinned. "Bit of a hopeless git sometimes. For a few minutes, we thought he'd split himself in half." James moved toward the table in the back that Harry had pointed out. "It didn't take us too long. We're all pretty bright."

Harry smiled at the story. He waited until they were sitting down. "You know how you all taught yourselves to be Animagi?" he asked quietly, leaning forward. He was excited with anticipation. "Could you teach me? You know, when I can do magic again."

James grinned a slow grin. "Yeah. Sure. We can do that." It was hard work, but James wasn't even thinking about the possibility that it couldn't be done.

Harry grinned too. "I'd be a stag too, right?" He admitted to himself he felt a little nervous. Transfiguration hadn't been the absolute best of his subjects, but he knew when he put his mind to it, he'd been able to learn just about any spell or incantation.

He pulled his wand back out and stared at it. "Is it very complicated?" Harry gave a small snort. "I bet Hermione could do it within a week. It'll probably take me months." He groaned.

James was happy talking about this sort of thing. "I don't know what you'd be. You don't choose it, it just happens. I think your animals chooses you."

"It takes for fucking ever." James laughed. "We spent a few years trying to get it right. But then we started pretty young and we didn't know as much as you do now. So it should probably be faster for you." A pause. "Still, it's probably at least going to take a few months."

Harry was trying not to bounce. He couldn't wait. He just nodded. "Whatever it takes." Someone came up to take their order then and Harry looked at his dad, trying to remember the name of the right drink. This is what he needed, a night out with his dad and promises of Transfiguration lessons to take his mind off things.

"Good man," James said proudly. Once the waiter showed up, James asked for a pitcher of beer. He was in the mood to have some fun and get pissed with his kid. Hard liquor was good and well, but tonight didn't seem the time for that.

"Do you think you could teach Ron too? That would be so brilliant if we learned at the same time. Maybe Hermione, too." Harry couldn't imagine anything better than being able to learn with his two best friends. His eyes were alight with excitement in a way they hadn't been in a long time.

James laughed. Harry's excitement was extremely welcome. "Well, you could ask your friends if they're interested and I can talk to my mates to make sure they're okay getting a bunch of new pupils."

"That would be so brilliant. I'll have to make sure they're all right with Wormtail. And I can always ask the older Remus for help, too, he's a brilliant teacher. And Dumbledore. But I want to learn mostly from you." The words rushed out of Harry's mouth as he thought of all the possibilities and all the people that could help them. By now he'd forgotten he temporarily couldn't do magic.

The beer came and James poured himself and Harry a pint each. "Make sure they're alright with Pete." He nodded, "He's not so bad. Really. Not like this. He's our friend and he isn't... he's not the bloke you lot knew."

Harry thanked his dad and took a sip, to start off with. "I will. He... I don't think he meant to go bad. I can't condone what he did later in life, but I wonder if he was like Regulus or Snape and got in too far or was too scared to leave." Harry wasn't sure. It seemed like the biggest of moral dilemmas, and Wormtail had even gone back to Voldemort and helped him rise back to power. Of course, that had probably seemed the better option to a coward than getting killed by his friends or being sent to Azkaban.

James nodded. He was grateful that Harry didn't want to crucify Peter. "One of these days, you've got to come out with me and the mates." James didn't think about how weird it could get.

Harry wasn't sure he wanted to be best mates with Wormtail either, but he had been right years ago at thinking his dad wouldn't have wanted Wormtail dead for what he'd done. And if his dad still wanted to be friends with Wormtail, that was up to him.

"Sure. I spend time with older Sirius and Remus but not the ones our age. Do you think they think it's weird I'm here?"

"I think they think it's weird we're all here." James grinned, looking down into his cup. "Honestly, they haven't seen me in years. It's weird for them."

James was too busy drinking to notice the way music started up. It was low at first. Men in the pub were watching the televisions, watching the game. The music couldn't be heard over their shouts easily. Not yet, at least.

"That makes sense, but I meant the ones... your age. Cause it must be mental to have a friend who's got a son that's almost his age." Harry took another drink, lost in thought, until something caught his attention and he craned his neck around to see what was going on.

James opened his mouth to speak when the bar noise started to grow quiet. He raised a brow and looked in the direction Harry was staring. "What the fu-"

A man started singing. James cracked a grin. "Oh for Merlin's sake."

"What... why are they singing? Oh, no." Harry had at first thought only those who had gone through the vortex could be affected by this, until he'd been walking home one day and stumbled upon a small musical number on a small side street.

He looked at his dad, wondering what was going to happen next as more and more people started to join in the singing.

James laughed pretty hard. There were guys bouncing around the bar, dancing on the counters and tables, waitresses flipping around. Madness.

"It's coming our way," James said with a laugh as he realized that the singers were getting closer to them.

"Dad, I think..." Harry couldn't explain it, would never be able to explain it, couldn't explain how he suddenly knew the words, the melody, or the dance steps, or even why he wanted to do this. But he was suddenly joining everyone else dancing and singing, and at the moment, it was the best feeling in the world.

"Now the time just seems to fly when we’re hanging with the boys, when we’re cheering and when no one keeps the score," he sang, "come on, Dad!" Harry gestured.
