Patience, like the dutiful daughter she was, was waiting to greet the guests in the foyer of the family home. Resplendent in her formal gown, with her hair artfully curled she looked the perfect picture of an upper-class young woman.

"Miss Patience." Sergius smiled, inclining his head to the young lady as he came towards her. "May I say you look absolutely beautiful? It has been a long time since I have been able to say it to a young lady, but I feel you are the one most deserving of the words." He explains, offering her his arm. "Will you come on a walk with me?" He asked her, gesturing the length of the room. "There are some most beautiful paintings and I believe one or two of them are portraits of your most radiant self."

"Mr. Petrov, good evening." Patience said, curtsying. She had been surprised when her father had instructed the household to prepare for a ball in Mr. Petrov's honour as she could hardly recall the two men being close. She knew her father often met with him but on business she had always been assured. In the event it mattered little, Mr. Petrov was charming and attractive, and a poor soul after his wife's suicide. Whatever she could do to make his entrance back into society a more pleasurable one she would do.

"A walk? I really should stay here to greet the family guests but since you are our guest of honour I believe I could be persuaded to leave me post." She said, blushing a little at his flattery.

"It is a much better evening for your presence, I assure you." He told her, offering her another smile and patting her hand. "And I would like it very much if you could take only a short walk with me. Your father would forgive you, no doubt, for keeping an old unfortunate creature like myself company." He added, steering her in the opposite direction to the main doors and wandering at a leisurely place down the long room. "I suppose it was wrong of me to drag you from the doors. I imagine you were waiting there for a special young man who holds your affection dear?"

Patience giggled, shaking her head.
"Oh no. I don't have a young man, or an older man or any man at all to speak of." She said, a little sadly, folding her hands in front of her. "I'm simply doing my duty as a hostess. Mother was feeling a little under the weather and has gone for a lie down in one of the upstairs rooms so I’m the lady of the house this evening."

"And a very fine lady of the house you are." He agreed, "But you would make even more of an impact on society if you were the wife of a rich man and thus the mistress of your own grand household." Sergius told her, "And that time is no doubt only a few short months away. No doubt by this time next year you will be happy married."

Patience's smile widened still and she ducked her head, cheeks bright red now.
"I can't imagine why father doesn't have you over more often. I had thought maybe because you're Russian," She looked up then worried he might have taken offence. "I only meant to say that because one hears such things in the paper about your countrymen, I assumed, obviously wrongly that the harshness of your country made the men cold and harsh too and that was why I'd not met you properly before."

Sergius allowed himself to laugh, if only to stop the girl fretting. The truth was that he was far from offended, but hardly amused, either. Still, their was an art in acting, and he had been a master of it for several years. "My dear, my dear Miss Patience. You have it quite wrong. While the land and weather may be cold and harsh, the men of my country and hot and passionate." He explains, patting her hand again, letting the touch linger. If he had thought he could get away with being a widower three times over, then Patience Hurst would have been the perfect young lady. She was sweet, beautiful, well-liked, but sometimes naïve enough to do herself damage. One day perhaps, fatal damage.

But he already had his plans with Beth and Sebastian, and he was not about to put those off and risk discovery. Speaking of Beth, she had better arrive soon...

Unaware of the man's thoughts or of his true nature Patience only smiled at him demurely from under lowered eyelashes.
"I could believe that, sir." She said, unable to believe she was flirting with the guest of honour at her father's party. She had no idea what Mr. Petrov did - investments and stocks or something boring like that - but he was handsome and rich, things which Patience thought very highly of.

"The only country I have ever visited, and I have visited many," Sergius explained to her, "Where the people resemble in some way the land is your very own. Your country is lush and beautiful, much like young English women." He smiled widely at that point. "And I can hardly believe, Miss Patience, that you are not yet married, never mind betrothed." He said, "On that note... perhaps I can ask a dance of you for later on this evening?"

"Miss Patience Hurst?" He asked, rather shyly if truth be told. "My lady, I wished to tell you that you and your father are hosting the most wonderfully exciting for balls, and I wanted to thank you for inviting me." He said, smiling slightly at her. "I am only sorry that the Admiral was unable to make it tonight."

Patience smiled at the man, rather taken by his uniform and she curtsied to him. "Thank you, sir. Although I'm afraid you have me at a loss as I do not know your name."

"Lady Patience?" Lord Chadwick smiled, bowing low to her. "I saw that you were still greeting guests and wondered if I could not bring you some refreshment?" He said. He knew the girl, if only through his friendship with her father, and she was only a few years older than his oldest son. Of course, Hursty was hoping to marry her off now and Isaac was certainly not old enough to marry, and Thaddeus wouldn't force any of his children to wed. It caused too much pain.

"Lord Chadwick," Patience said with a smile, rather hopeful she might be privy to a little gossip about the man's awful wife. She knew she shouldn't be so terrible, especially not to one of her father's oldest friends, but it was just such an interesting affair. "That's too kind of you, my Lord. Yes, a small glass of the punch would be delightful. Tell me, how are your children? Crispin asks after Issac often. You should bring him round one afternoon and they can play together, and I would love to see Oscar and Bianca."

He bowed his head again, bringing her the requested glass, and another for himself. "I have been looking for your father all over, Patience, I don't suppose you know where he is?" He said to her, as if the thought had just struck him to ask her.

"The children? Ah, they are going very well. They have a new tutor who has been distracting them with geography and history." He smiles, "And French. Bianca insists on speaking nothing else at dinner, I am afraid it quite upset the staff." He smiled, "But we shall have to visit. Or while you are in London you should come and see us. Oscar is going to start his lessons soon, but for the moment his favourite thing is stories. I am sure you could tell him better ones then I can manage."

"No, I'm afraid not. He was here a moment ago but I think he was rather distracted by our guest of honour who seems to have disappeared somewhere too." Patience said with a small shrug.

"Bianca is so adorable. I do hope when she's old enough you'll let me take her shopping for her first ball gown. My mother went with me, but since your lady wife is gone and you have no sisters I might be permitted to help? Oscar is such a dear little boy, I'm quite sure I would love to come and help read him stories." She paused to take a breath and then continued. "Where did you find such a wonderful tutor? Crispin is in dire need of a new one. His old tutor left quite suddenly. Maybe he could come and study with your children for a little while?"

Mr Ellis Wetherald was only just returned from his tour of Europe- a popular distraction for young men not yet given their inheritance, or, like him, never planning to receive anything as grand as what his elder brother expected. This was his first social engagement since returning hurriedly from Naples, having left without looking back in fear of being caught by the young lady's father.

He stood on the threshold of the Ballroom, waiting his turn to be greeted, a single rose carefully held between his fingers. The news of Lady Rebecca's sudden illness had been received even before he left his brother's club, and having heard this week so much new on the daughter, Patience, he had decided to come and she her for himself, even if he came under his brother's invitation and not his own.

As the elder gentleman and his wife in front of him were greeted and directed by the young hostess to the refreshments, Ellis cleared his throat, and bowed low to the girl in the elegant Italian style. "Un piacere incontrarlo, giovane signora." He said, holding the rose out to her, "A beautiful lady should not be without a beautiful flower."

Patience laughed, rather delighted, and took the rose from him, sniffing at its delicate fragrance. This was rather the evening for interesting young men to approach her it seemed. She wondered if it was the new ribbons she had brought, or if they were drawn to her after reading about her ordeal in the paper.

To think, all these eligible men, spurred on to make her acquaintance and express their sympathies and offer a protective arm. It was simply the most wonderful, while rather awful, thing that could have happened to her.
"Thank you, sir. May I have the pleasure of your name and invitation?"

"My name you may certainly have. Patience Wetherald sounds like a fine name for such an elegant young lady." He said, smiling charmingly at her. "At least, I assume you must be Patience Hurst, the charming hostess of tonight's soiree? Forgive my manners, I am Ellis Wetherald, and I am here in place of my brother, Lord Wetherald, who has been unfortunately detained. He begged me to tell you that he is delighted that the events of earlier this week did no harm to you and your belongings were all safety returned, he was almost as horrified as I to hear of your attack. I curse my ill luck that I was not the man to rescue you from such villainy."

"Oh!" Patience said, a deep pink blush staining her cheeks. "I didn't mean...you're teasing me! How awful of you." She laughed girlishly.

"Wetherald? My father speaks very highly of your brother, sir. I'm sure if you are even half the man he is you would be more than welcome at our little party, but I must say I have not heard any talk of you before."

"Not heard of me?" He said, with a slight melancholy dip in his voice, but he quickly cast that off. "No doubt because I have been touring Europe, and they had no idea of my doings! But now I am returned, and I hope that from now on you will only hear good things about me, or at least, thrilling tales of my European adventures." He smiled at her, offering his hand to her, "Have you ever visited Venice, my dearest Lady Patience? Or Verona, the city of Shakespeare's star-crossed lovers? Such beautiful places!"

"Touring Europe?" Patience said, smiling widely. "How thrilling! No, I'm sorry to say I have never been outside of our lovely England." She sighed rather wistfully. "I have no doubt they are the most beautiful cities."

"You have not, my dear Patience? You must! No educational in the romances could possibly be complete without a tour of the cities of Europe. It would be my honour, privilege, even, to escort you to the cities of Shakespeare's romances! An English beauty such as yourself would have no difficulty dazzling the men of the continent, but I shall assure your father that I will protect you from their advances." He promised her, smiling, "It would be our adventure."

"We have. Forgive me." Ellis said, bowing to her again, "I was getting quite ahead of myself, Lady Patience, I go beg your pardon. I have not met a young lady of your beauty or of your standing since before I left for England and in my excitement I never intended to be so forward." He explained to her.
