Patience's smile widened still and she ducked her head, cheeks bright red now.
"I can't imagine why father doesn't have you over more often. I had thought maybe because you're Russian," She looked up then worried he might have taken offence. "I only meant to say that because one hears such things in the paper about your countrymen, I assumed, obviously wrongly that the harshness of your country made the men cold and harsh too and that was why I'd not met you properly before."

Sergius allowed himself to laugh, if only to stop the girl fretting. The truth was that he was far from offended, but hardly amused, either. Still, their was an art in acting, and he had been a master of it for several years. "My dear, my dear Miss Patience. You have it quite wrong. While the land and weather may be cold and harsh, the men of my country and hot and passionate." He explains, patting her hand again, letting the touch linger. If he had thought he could get away with being a widower three times over, then Patience Hurst would have been the perfect young lady. She was sweet, beautiful, well-liked, but sometimes naïve enough to do herself damage. One day perhaps, fatal damage.

But he already had his plans with Beth and Sebastian, and he was not about to put those off and risk discovery. Speaking of Beth, she had better arrive soon...

Unaware of the man's thoughts or of his true nature Patience only smiled at him demurely from under lowered eyelashes.
"I could believe that, sir." She said, unable to believe she was flirting with the guest of honour at her father's party. She had no idea what Mr. Petrov did - investments and stocks or something boring like that - but he was handsome and rich, things which Patience thought very highly of.

"The only country I have ever visited, and I have visited many," Sergius explained to her, "Where the people resemble in some way the land is your very own. Your country is lush and beautiful, much like young English women." He smiled widely at that point. "And I can hardly believe, Miss Patience, that you are not yet married, never mind betrothed." He said, "On that note... perhaps I can ask a dance of you for later on this evening?"

Patience tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, unable to meet his eye. She nodded quickly, finding her voice and finally mustered "Yes, yes I would." before falling silent again quickly.

Sergius laughed gently, taking her hand and pressing his lips to it. "My dear hostess, you are the most charming of young women. There is no need to blush." He tells her, "Perhaps I should leave you to your duties of hostess and allow your cheeks to return to normal before our dance and I can resume my flattery then?"

"I think that might be best, yes." Patience said, her voice breathless and she could hardly contain her excitement. She curtsied to him. "Until then, Mr. Petrov."
