Mr Ellis Wetherald was only just returned from his tour of Europe- a popular distraction for young men not yet given their inheritance, or, like him, never planning to receive anything as grand as what his elder brother expected. This was his first social engagement since returning hurriedly from Naples, having left without looking back in fear of being caught by the young lady's father.

He stood on the threshold of the Ballroom, waiting his turn to be greeted, a single rose carefully held between his fingers. The news of Lady Rebecca's sudden illness had been received even before he left his brother's club, and having heard this week so much new on the daughter, Patience, he had decided to come and she her for himself, even if he came under his brother's invitation and not his own.

As the elder gentleman and his wife in front of him were greeted and directed by the young hostess to the refreshments, Ellis cleared his throat, and bowed low to the girl in the elegant Italian style. "Un piacere incontrarlo, giovane signora." He said, holding the rose out to her, "A beautiful lady should not be without a beautiful flower."

Patience laughed, rather delighted, and took the rose from him, sniffing at its delicate fragrance. This was rather the evening for interesting young men to approach her it seemed. She wondered if it was the new ribbons she had brought, or if they were drawn to her after reading about her ordeal in the paper.

To think, all these eligible men, spurred on to make her acquaintance and express their sympathies and offer a protective arm. It was simply the most wonderful, while rather awful, thing that could have happened to her.
"Thank you, sir. May I have the pleasure of your name and invitation?"

"My name you may certainly have. Patience Wetherald sounds like a fine name for such an elegant young lady." He said, smiling charmingly at her. "At least, I assume you must be Patience Hurst, the charming hostess of tonight's soiree? Forgive my manners, I am Ellis Wetherald, and I am here in place of my brother, Lord Wetherald, who has been unfortunately detained. He begged me to tell you that he is delighted that the events of earlier this week did no harm to you and your belongings were all safety returned, he was almost as horrified as I to hear of your attack. I curse my ill luck that I was not the man to rescue you from such villainy."

"Oh!" Patience said, a deep pink blush staining her cheeks. "I didn't mean...you're teasing me! How awful of you." She laughed girlishly.

"Wetherald? My father speaks very highly of your brother, sir. I'm sure if you are even half the man he is you would be more than welcome at our little party, but I must say I have not heard any talk of you before."

"Not heard of me?" He said, with a slight melancholy dip in his voice, but he quickly cast that off. "No doubt because I have been touring Europe, and they had no idea of my doings! But now I am returned, and I hope that from now on you will only hear good things about me, or at least, thrilling tales of my European adventures." He smiled at her, offering his hand to her, "Have you ever visited Venice, my dearest Lady Patience? Or Verona, the city of Shakespeare's star-crossed lovers? Such beautiful places!"

"Touring Europe?" Patience said, smiling widely. "How thrilling! No, I'm sorry to say I have never been outside of our lovely England." She sighed rather wistfully. "I have no doubt they are the most beautiful cities."

"You have not, my dear Patience? You must! No educational in the romances could possibly be complete without a tour of the cities of Europe. It would be my honour, privilege, even, to escort you to the cities of Shakespeare's romances! An English beauty such as yourself would have no difficulty dazzling the men of the continent, but I shall assure your father that I will protect you from their advances." He promised her, smiling, "It would be our adventure."

"Sir!" Patience protested. "This is all so very sudden, we've only just met after all." She flicked out her fan, fluttering it in front of her face and looked at him flirtatiously over the top of it.

"We have. Forgive me." Ellis said, bowing to her again, "I was getting quite ahead of myself, Lady Patience, I go beg your pardon. I have not met a young lady of your beauty or of your standing since before I left for England and in my excitement I never intended to be so forward." He explained to her.

Patience closed her fan, tapping him lightly on the arm, laughing softly.
"Such flattery. Tell me, Mr. Wetherald, do you dance?"
