SUMMARY: A formal dinner and dancing with traditional Fornaxian entertainment.

Mary never thought she would feel out of place at a social function, but this was so far from what she was used to that it made her feel a little uncomfortable. Incidentally, she ended up missing Howard. He naturally had a way of making her feel confident and beautiful.

She was dressed up that night in a gown that the recalled her time period. The Fornaxians seemed interested in it because it was so different from what most of the Starfleet members wore. At least it gave her a chance to talk to them. Mary found them to be an interesting and cultured people.

After dinner, she lingered by the dance floor. She'd always loved dancing, though coming here without an official partner meant that she was stuck looking for one. Would any of these men from the future even know how to dance properly? Somehow she doubted it, but she was still hopeful to try.

Christopher shouldn't be this nervous about a dress. Or the two spare ones hanging in his closet. The silver dress that had been his first choice was draped over the couch. He thought it would suit Leia, the woman who was both princess and general. He had had help of course in picking out his top choices but this one he kept coming back to.

He heard the door chime and called "come in" hoping the dress would suit. He gave Leia a kiss when she came in before stepping aside so she could see his choice. "Well, general, will this work for tonight or am I stuck enduring a diplomatic dinner solo?"

Truly, Leia hadn't been sure what to expect when she'd told Chris to pick out a dress for her. At first she had been teasing, but then she realized she wasn't at all. She really did want to see him choose a dress for her, as though that was a first step in them taking a step forward with their - whatever they wanted to call it - relationship. Attending an event like this, together, was probably enough, really, but this was fun.

Her eyes brightened when she spotted the dress, and she crossed to it, fingering the silvery folds. "Oh, I think this'll work just fine," she told him with a smile. "Who helped you pick it out?" she ventured a moment later, a grin tugging at the corner of her mouth.

It was nice to get to go to a fancy dinner every once in a while, so Carol was glad to dress up. Fornax was an interesting planet, even if her week had been a bit trying so far. Due to the sandstorm, she'd gotten stuck planet-side at the distillery for over a day. Despite the whiskey, that had gotten old after a few hours. When she was able to get back to the ship, she had just enough time to crash for a few hours before getting ready for the dinner.

She mingled with Starfleet members and Fornaxians alike during the social hour before the dinner. Carol liked talking to all different kinds of people and her attitude was usually relatively sunny. Pausing before the appetizer table, she inspected what appeared to be some kind of meat before popping it into her mouth.

"Do I want to know what I've just eaten?" she asked the person nearest to her in a quiet voice.

Jadzia was still getting used to the dress uniforms of this alternate era. They were less stylish than the ones from her own history books, but more comfortable than the ones from her timeline.

She'd always hated those. Maybe not as bad as some other people, but she still didn't like them.

She looked around for her own guest, hoping to spot Susan before someone intercepted her.

Whatever nervousness Susan may have felt, the former Queen hid behind a careful mask of warmth and friendliness. Fifteen years of attending and hosting balls wasn't something one forgot overnight, no matter how much she may have hoped she might before being brought to this strange time and place. She had been separated from Jadzia after dinner, and had picked up her refilled glass of wine, wandering the edge of the dance floor as she watched others. She wore a burgundy dress she had made herself with material purchased from a Fornaxian merchant a few days previously, and had arranged her long hair in cascading curls.

Lifting her glass to her lips for a sip as she turned, she lowered it when she spotted Jadzia approaching through the crowd, and smiled. "I thought I'd lost you to negotiations or something like it."

It had taken less effort than expected to get her way into the formal dinner, but then Lomea wasn't about to question it. It was an influential night, and she wanted to be there to witness it. It might shed some light on politics in this galaxy, and while politics was something she disliked, she'd played the game well.

She wore a slinky red dress, and took a glass of some kind of refreshment to drink while she observed.

Everything in this century seems destined to make him more uncomfortable it seemed. All practicality seems to have vanished as Starfleet got... used to itself.

He was a bit apart from the rest, the better to find threats. He did break his serious face if something particularly curious happened.

"It appears I am not the only one who would rather not be here" T'Pol said quietly as she stepped up next to Malcolm. They'd spoken a few times since arriving here and T'Pol had to admit while his humour was very different to her own she did appreciate it more than she let on. Of course the way he teased Trip also never failed to amuse her.

Hikaru wasn't a huge fan of formal events since he had the tendency to stick his foot in his mouth quite often. For the past few years, he'd had Ben on the rare occasion when he'd been home and had to face a required event. That wasn't the case now but thankfully he'd been spending a lot of time with Katie and they'd become good friends. He wasn't sure if this was a date exactly but at least he wasn't alone.

"Thank you for coming with me," he said to her as they sat down to dinner. "This promises to be a pretty boring evening especially since I have no idea what this trade agreement is alla bout, I'm not a diplomat but I'm glad you could come."

Katie had figured this would be like a lot of those stuffy PR things she'd sometimes had to do as a Magpies player. Those events could be really boring, but she'd learned how to make them sort of fun, especially with the right company. That was a part of why she'd said yes to this invitation to come here with Hikaru.

"These things are only as boring as you let them be," she murmured, flashing him a mischievous grin. "We just have to find a way to make it fun. That was something Katie excelled at, lucky for him.

Annie felt a bit like a fish out of water. She was far more comfortable in the Med Bay than at a formal banquet but it was part of the job. At least she got to dress up and that was nice. She had found the dress while helping pick out a dress for Leia and had fallen in love with it. With her hair up and her makeup done, Annie felt a little like a princess.

Escept for the fact that she was alone.

She'd never had the best luck when it came to dating and it seemed like this was to be o expception. She was the only Starfleet officer there who wasn't with someone as far as she could tell and she was doing the best she could to not stick out like a sore thumb. At the moment, she was stnading near the door with a drink in hand, trying to appear as if she was waiting for someone to join her.

"Well, if it isn't my favorite doc," Trip drawled as he slipped into the space next to Annie. He gave her a grin as he looked around the room. God, he hated these things. All diplomacy and manners. He knew how important these negotiations were, but diplomatic functions had never been his favorite part of being an officer. Unfortunately, it seemed that not being senior staff here, despite his rank of commander, wasn't going to get him out of attending these things.

"How are ya, Annie?" he asked, looking back at the woman next to him. She'd been one of the ones looking after him when he'd arrived here in the future, but their relationship had since transitioned to being friends rather than just doctor and patient, and that was something she was glad for.

Kathryn was well used to these functions though she was never a big fan of them. She'd experienced enough both at home in the Alpha Quadrant and in the Delta Quadrant. She had to admit though it reminded her more of the Delta Quadrant and her time on Voyager than in the Alpha Quadrant. Perhaps its because they were constantly discovering new planets and species compared to the Alpha Quadrant, where after so long there hadn't been many new discoveries.

Dressed in the dress uniform of the time, Kathryn had spoken to a few of the locals, conversing easily with them before she found herself on the edge of the room, a glass of drink in her hand just watching people. She needed a moment to herself before heading back out there.

When Archer had offered to escort her, she'd agreed, of course, and really was enjoying the evening. Hoshi enjoyed watching the different officers, the Fornaxian natives and just seeing what this was going to be like in general. At one point Capt. Archer got pulled away and Hoshi found herself wondering around, looking at the different local dishes, she was especially interested in their entertainment and after being handed another drink she was standing with a tilted head and her arms loosely crossed in front of her as she watched.
