"Well, if it isn't my favorite doc," Trip drawled as he slipped into the space next to Annie. He gave her a grin as he looked around the room. God, he hated these things. All diplomacy and manners. He knew how important these negotiations were, but diplomatic functions had never been his favorite part of being an officer. Unfortunately, it seemed that not being senior staff here, despite his rank of commander, wasn't going to get him out of attending these things.

"How are ya, Annie?" he asked, looking back at the woman next to him. She'd been one of the ones looking after him when he'd arrived here in the future, but their relationship had since transitioned to being friends rather than just doctor and patient, and that was something she was glad for.

"To be quite honest, I would rather be doing surgery or even having surgery than be here," she laughed. "I don'tunderstand the purpose of makng us all come. I mean I get that it's a big deal but I'm a doctor, I'm not a diplomat and honestly? I have no idea what we're even neotiating about." She took another sip of her drink and smiled at Trip. He had been in bad shape when he arrived and she'd fought like hell to save him so it always made her feel good to see him looking well. And he was a good friend, always able to make her laugh.

"At least the food looks good," she observed. "you never know what you're going to get at these things. It seems the Fomasxian at least took into consideration that most of us are from Earth and we'd rather eat what we're used to. Once when I was at STarfleet Medical, there was some kind of fancy shindig with some people form a planet out on the outer rim who insisted on only eating their own cuisine. Almost every single person from Starfleet that was there got food poisoning. That was a good time, let me tell you." At least she hadn't been in attendance at the dinner but she'd certainly gotten to see her share of the after effects.

Trip couldn't help a soft chuckle at he comments. "It gives the Fornaxians a chance to see our crew, which'll give the captain an edge in the negotiations, assuming we make a good impression. I can't tell you how many times Archer ended up accidentally offending some alien race we didn't know nearly enough about."

Shaking his head and laughing at the memories, he nodded towards the buffet table. "Some of the food looks a little different, but I guess I can't expect catfish and hushpuppies this far out. Here's hoping none of us end up with food poisoning now that you've probably jinxed us.

"I forget sometimes that all this was completely new to your crew," Annie replied. "you truly did go where no one had gone before. I can also very easily seen Captian Archer accidently offending someone." She smiled. "He says pretty much whatever is on his mind but I appreciate that. It's good to know where you stand."

She glanced toward the buffet at Trip's words and then laughed. "Okay, I confess. I have never in my life eaten catfish and hushpuppies. I'm not even entirely sure I know what hushputties are. I'll take your word for it that they're good."

"Technically, sometimes it was Porthos," Trip added, shaking his head again. "Captain wasn't always real happy about having to smooth things over, but we got by alright. Sometimes all we had was our instincts and our wits, but look at Starfleet now."

It still amazed Trip that their adventures on the NX01 had led to all of this. It was great, really. None of them had set out to be the famous legends they 'd become by this time, but he was glad to hear they'd made such a difference.

"You've never had catfish and hushpuppies?" he asked, even though she'd just said she hadn't. "Well, that's something we're gonna have to fix soon. I'm sure the replicators can make some up for us."

Annie laughed. LIke most everyone else, she had fallen in love with the beagle. "Well it's pretty hard to stay made at Porthos, he's far too cute for that. Although I can imagine him creating a diplomatic incident."

She was still laughing as he told her that he would ahve ot make sure she tried catfish and hushpuppies. "I'm going to hold you to that," she said. "I'll try just about anything and I like fish so we'll see." Growing up as a Starfleet brat had meant that she had traveled a great deal and had tried a lot of different cuisines, some she liked better than others.

"I promise, we'll do that soon," he said, grinning at her. He hardly needed an excuse to have his favorite meal or to share it with someone else. "Maybe we can even get them to make it for dinner, share with the whole ship."

The mess here was different from the one on his Enterprise, but he hoped they could still make that happen. It'd be nice to have a little taste of home.

"That would be fun," she said. "let everyone give it a try. I'd wager a guess that there are lot of people on the ship who've never seen a catfish. Actually I've never seen one either but at least I've heard of them." With the diverse group they had on the Enterprise, there was no telling what the travelers had seen or eaten.

"It would be nice if everyone got together and had a night where we brought our favorite foods and tried them." she said thoughtfully. "I'm sure there are some things from some of the worlds here that are pretty amazing. Some that aren't that amazing as well, I'm sure. But it's worth a try."

"Now that is a great idea," Trip said, grinning back at her. "We could have a pot luck, get everyone to bring somethin' and each try a lil' of everything." Like her, he was sure there were some things he wouldn't really want to eat, but it still sounded like a good idea.

"We should run that by the Captain when we get back on the ship," he suggested. "I'm sure he'd approve. I bet there's a lot of people who'd be interested."

"I think I will. If he's okay with it, I guess I would have to go through the travel liason office to set it up. I honestly have no idea. Having all these extra people on the ship is a little complicated when it comes to Starfleet rules and regs." Annie was the type that always tred to follow the rules wherever she was but this thing that had brought all the travelers here was certainly out of the ordinary and turned everything upside down.

"And please don't think I'm saying that i'm not happy you're here," she laughed. "I'm very glad that I've had the chance to get to know you. Which sounds like I'm about to leave for good or soemthing so maybe I should just be quiet."
