"I'm just here to look pretty," Jadzia replied, turning to Susan and letting her eyes roam, not for the first time. "But not as pretty as you are tonight. What did you think?"

Except for individual traditions, most state dinners were generally the same. Oh, one had to make allowances for cultural differences. One couldn't sit X next to Y, or serve Z, or make a specific toast (or any toast at all, in the case of at least one planet). But by and large they were similar.

"Nonsense. You're lovely, Jadzia," she replied, her smile warming, though she didn't quite cross the socially accepted line of a public display of affection as much as she wanted to.

"Dinner was...interesting. I'm sure the protocol officers put a lot of work into arranging all of this. If I were them, I'd want to sleep for a week after."

Jadzia tended to be affectionate in public, though she'd research social mores before offending foreign dignitaries. She didn't see much wrong with offering her arm for Susan, at the very least. "I'm sure they've earned that."

Smiling at the offer, she stepped closer and slipped her arm through Jadzia's as she idly glanced around again. The Fornax were a fascinating people, and it still amazed her to even be here. "They certainly have," she replied, before returning her eyes to the other woman. "Did you enjoy the dinner, or was it all too overcooked for your tastes? She teased with a small grin.

Letting her other hand brush across Susan's finger tips, Jadzia followed her gaze, then met her eyes. "It was a nice dinner, if a little lacking in excitement."

She winked. "But my idea of a good dinner is probably a little skewed. I'm sure the Admiral and Captain are happy it went smoothly."

Her fingers twitched under Jadzia's, and Susan smiled at the touch, relaxing somewhat despite the fact that she was surrounded by a room filled with strangers. This wasn't the first time that had happened, and it'd hardly be the last. Susan's eyes danced with mischief as she said, "Should it have been so exciting? It is only a diplomatic dinner, after all. And not one where any large trade deals were being worked out. Nothing all that exciting, really."

Grinning a little, she nodded. "You have unique tastes," she said, just as diplomatic as a state official. "And you're right, they should be very happy. Let's just hope we all get through the remaining evening with no incidents." Lifting her gaze, she studied the sky above, and added wryly, "And no further sandstorms."

"Remind me to tell you about a Ferengi state dinner I attended once." Jadzia brushed her hand again. If they were Vulcans, they'd practically be making out with such a display of finger touching.

"I'd like to avoid a sandstorm as well." She also wanted out of the uniform. It wasn't really made for 90 degree weather.

"Ferengi?" She hadn't heard them mentioned yet and was automatically interested. This time when their fingers brushed, Su turned her hand to grip the other woman's briefly, just for a moment, before she let go again.

"I think we're lucky the last didn't stay for very long. I know that sometimes they can last for days, or longer." That was true in any desert, in fact. As a server passed by, Su delicately lifted a second glass off of the tray and passed it to Jadzia. "How long do you think this event will go on this evening?"

"Short. Big ears. Won't encounter the Federation for another hundred years or so. Capitalists. Their entire society revolves around earning profit. Even their funeral rights involve auctioning off vaccuum sealed body parts. Once you understand them as a people, they can be a lot of fun."

Probably not the most romantic conversation ever, but Jadzia had always found that interesting. "A few more hours at least. Long enough for a dance."

"That sounds...dreadful," came Su's frank reply, and she laughed a bit, shaking her head. "But interesting all the same." She was fascinated by all these different species and cultures, and Jadzia knew far more than she did.

She smiled at her words, glancing back to her. "A few hours is long enough for several dances. Should we start things off?"

"They take some getting used to." Once or twice, though, Quark had crossed the line, even the very fuzzy line that Jadzia had when it came to Ferengi. But then she saw a big difference between the pursuit of profit and weapons sales.

Sweeping her way onto the floor, Jadzia pulled Susan against her. "I was hoping you'd say that."

"I'm sure they do." As Jadzia led her towards the dance floor, Susan finished her drink and set the empty glass on a table as they passed, and smiled when they stopped and she was drawn closer to the other woman.

Sliding her arms around Jadzia's neck, she started to sway with her along with the music.

This was really the best kind of dancing, in Jadzia's opinion. Close to someone attractive, when it was just the music and her partner and nothing else mattered. Her eyes were light and happy, and she couldn't keep the grin off of her face.

"In about twenty minutes, the Fornaxians will be playing some of their music and showing their dances. I might join in."
