Jim Kirk & OTA

It was always nice to change out of his uniform for a few hours and relax, Jim thought, as he entered the Deck Five Lounge with a grin on his face. Here he could blend in, even though he figured that most everyone, even the newcomers, knew who he was by now. He just didn't always have the time to join everyone in their free time. Not only that but he wanted to give the crew, especially, a chance to unwind without glancing over their shoulders at their captain.

He grabbed a Bud Classic from the bar and then turned around to face the room, leaning casually against the bar with an arm resting on it as he sipped his beer.

Daisy had been aboard the Enterprise for a little over two weeks now and she still had moments where she couldn't quite believe it was real. She kept expecting to wake up and find herself back in the Playground facing a harsh uncertain future for her kind. It was real though, she was in space in the future and surrounded by what many might call heroes of Starfleet. It was probably the most bizarre situation she had ever found herself in. She was used to unusual though and she'd had enough time to mostly get over the shock of it all, mostly. In an effort to help acclimate herself more she'd made sure to stop by the Deck Five Lounge each Saturday to mingle and meet her fellow Travelers new and old and get to know the crew who joined them.

She'd been there for a while already, mostly watching people come and go when she noticed their Captain had graced them with his presence. In what might have been a potentially embarrassing move she walked over and smiled up at him. "Captain Kirk, we haven't officially met yet. I'm Daisy Johnson, pleasure to meet you," she said, swapping her own bottle of Bud from one hand to the other so she could offer hers in greeting.

Jim turned to watch as the young woman approached him, and a slow smile spread across his face. "Pleasure's all mine, Miss Johnson," he said, shaking her hand. "You've been here for a while, haven't you? Everything going all right with you? Finding your way around?"

He knew that for anyone who wasn't used to life on a starship, being on the Enterprise might be overwhelming or confusing. He hoped his crew was helping out anyone who needed anything.

Daisy felt her own smile grow slightly, internally freaking out just a little over the fact she was shaking Captain Kirk's hand. "I've been here about two weeks now. It's a lot to take in and I have moments where I feel monumentally stupid but I'm getting there."

There was no point denying that it was a little overwhelming being on the Enterprise. "It's definitely a steep learning curve here."

"Well, I hope that the crew is making you more comfortable," Jim said. "I can't imagine how overwhelming it is to all of you. I mean, the first time I set foot on the Enterprise, it was overwhelming, and I knew what I was getting in to."

"The crew have gone out of their way to make me feel comfortable," Daisy said, smiling at him. "It is more than a little overwhelming, there was only one other time I felt close to this overwhelmed but that was a whole big thing and I'm sure you don't want me boring you with my life story."

"I'm always interested in learning where people have come from," he insisted to her. "So if you want to tell me the story, feel free. If you don't, that's not a problem." He grinned at her. "I'm glad to hear that the crew is helping. I'd hate to hear otherwise."

"If you're really interested in hearing all about where I come from and what I've been through I'll tell you but I don't think it's a story for now, might bring the mood down," she told him, smiling warmly as she took a drink. "Definitely one of the most welcoming places I've been in my life."

Jim & Mary
[info]ladycontrary
2017-02-25 11:35 pm UTC (link)
It took Mary a moment for her to recognize him without his uniform on. In jeans and a leather jacket, he blended in with all of the other off-duty crew members. There was a way that Jim Kirk held himself though. Even while off-duty it was clear that he was in charge.

Mary wasn't a woman who often went to bars. That wasn't to say that she didn't drink, just that bars weren't considered proper for a lady of her status. This bar seemed decidedly casual, much more casual than the dress she was wearing, which she had thought was incredibly casual. Why was everyone wearing laboring clothing like jeans at a social gathering? The dress itself had been a find. The machines called replicators on this ship were truly spectacular things, allowing her to make a dress that reminded her of the ones from home in mere minutes. Mind-blowing.

Many people stopped by to chat with Jim or just to say hello, so Mary held back for a moment, waiting until he was alone to approach him. She saw her opportunity when he was leaning against the bar, drinking a beer out of the bottle. (Not a very gentlemanly pose if one asked her.)

"Captain Kirk," Mary said, her posture straight as she held out her hand to him. "I am Lady Mary Crawley. We spoke on the PADD."

He turned his attention to the woman in front of him, lowering his bottle for a moment to greet her with a smile. "Lady Crawley," Jim said. "It's nice to meet you face to face." He couldn't help but give her a once over. He'd never seen a dress quite like hers before. "I trust you're getting more used to being several hundred years in the future, or at least as used to it as you can in only a few days."

Mary watched his eyes scan her form. She was used to men looking her over, so it didn't bother her in the least, even if he was only looking at her dress. The first thing she noticed about Jim was that his eyes were incredibly blue in person.

"I am, or as well as I can," she conceded. "Do people usually wear workmen's clothing to social events?"

It was a genuine question, not an insult, even though there was surprise in her tone.

Jim glanced around. None of his crew was in uniform, so he wasn't sure what she mesnt, so he just shrugged. "You're probably used to a more formal attire," he said. He had read the stats of all the new arrivals and, if he was remembering correctly, she was from the early part of the 20th century.

"I am," she confirmed, thus why she felt incredibly overdressed. No matter, she would persevere. At least she was comfortable in her clothing.

Mary stood next to him for a moment as a silence hung between them. "Do you mind if I join you?" She wanted to get to know the man who was in charge on this ship. Such a thing could prove useful later.

He glanced around and shrugged, shifting a little to the side and motioning to one of the empty stools near him. "Not at all," he said. He sipped his beer and wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. "I hope it's not too overwhelming to be out of your time period."

Did he just wipe his mouth with his hand? Mary tried not to look too horrified at how far manners had possibly deteriorated in just a few centuries. She perched on the stool, her posture perfect.

"I'm sure I will adjust quickly enough." It was a nice deflection. While hopefully true, Mary was still frightened of being trapped in this time and place with nobody that she knew. She had cried numerous times in her room, alone with the door locked, where nobody could see her.

She glanced up at the multicolored bottles that lined the shelf behind the bar. "Do you have any drink suggestions?" she asked.

She amused him. In a good way, of course. Jim wasn't sure if he'd ever met someone so proper as Lady Crawley was, except perhaps for Spock, but that wasn't necessarily proper, just logical. And Mary wasn't emotionless. He could tell that just by reading her facial expressions. "Why don't you tell me what your usual drink is and then I'll see if I know of anything similar?" he suggested.

Future medicine was a really wonderful thing, Root mused. And so was the selection of drinks. She selected something that was green, and wandered over to the Captain.

"Come here often, sailor?"

Jim shook his head and threw back a swallow of his beer. "Nebula Charger," he said. "It's from a planet in the Devion system. They use this grain called chapster for the alcohol. I visited once, a few years back, and had some of the unsettled stuff. It was pretty nasty."

The name was catchy. Root liked it. She took another sip, a longer one this time, and seemed content to keep pestering him. "How many planets have you visited. It has to be quite a few, I'm sure."

She had an agenda but small talk had been a dying art form.

"You know," Jim said, "I don't think I'd be able to accurately answer that without going year by year or month by month and that doesn't sound like the kind of storytelling that ought to happen here in the lounge." He grinned and tipped his beer at her.

Root trailed her finger around the rim of her glass. "Fair enough, Jimmy, but I do love a detailed tale. You'll have to tell me sometime."

She tilted her head, her hair falling to one side. "So who do I have to suck up to, to get a look at the guts of your lovely computer system? I'm something of an expert where I come from."

"An expert?" he echoed. "In computer systems. What's your background?" Jim asked. He figured he could always get her in with some of the operations team, if she really wanted to take a look at it. There wouldn't be any harm in that.
